What optical drives do you have?

If you have to make a decision between a Benq drive and a Sony drive, Benq is the way to go. They have a lot of features which are disabled in the Sony's. But you can of course crossflash them to the original Benq model to unlock those features.

On all new boards, there are at least 4 or 6 or 7 SATA connectors and only 1 IDE connector. So this will not be a problem. However, I don't see why we need SATA optical drives. The transfer speeds of optical drives are nowhere near even ATA33 speeds.

Comes out as a SONY!!!! Every brand do this.. get bulks and Rename it, but they'll have to satisfy strict conditions from that branded people to get that license!!!

Wonder how much those yellow CD/DVDs cost?I heard that a pack is 50 USD.Dont knw the pack size...and whats the other technologies name that uses blue CD/DVDs?lightflash or something?

What about the original manufaturers. It's always better to buy from the OEMs.

Yes! Its costly than others!! But prices have gone down dramatically, I bought SONY DVD-RW around Rs.4750/= here, now dropped to around Rs.4000/=

Hehe. You've brought up a good point.
Sony DRU-820A doesn't support lightscribe, right? But Benq DW1670 supports it. It's the same drive inside(I mean, hardware wise identical), but Sony's firmware is limited in features. So, it's always better to buy the orginal drive.

I didn't mean every OPTICAL DRIVE!!

I mean every branded names do this in some way!!

Example: You get a DELL laptop.. not the whole thing is DELL, maybe its optical drive done by Toshiba!

Yeah, yeah. Now the difference is negligible. When I bought my DRU-810A, it cost me Rs.7,250 here. It was around US$59.99 in USA. The OEM drive, Benq DW1640 was onlt US$49.99. They didn't have the Benq drives at that time.

True. But that's a bit extreme. They at least make few parts. Here, they only make their sticker, drive bezel and firmware. Looks like they aren't doing anything at all - even the firmware is not built by them from the scratch.

But the thing is, it's not the best. I mean, Sony's firmware support isn't that great. For my drive, they have only released 5 versions. Benq have released about 10 (they are not bug fixes; they are burn quality improvements and expansion in supported media IDs)

BTW, anyone own an NEC 3540?

I use a one.
Its frm a pentium 1.made in 1995.HP brand one.No noise @ all.It started the little noise after i cleaned it

I got ma keyboard driver with the help of it[to tell u the truth,that program is a piece of c**p :angry:

They are cheap, but not that cheap. They are around US$30. But the thing is, the NEC 3540 and Benq 1640 are considered the best DVD burners to set foot on earth. Feature wise, the newer ones are superior, but final output quality wise the quality of those two drives is pretty much the best it can get.
