In my personal opinion, I see a discripency here.

Sinhala - a nationality
Hindu - A religion
Tamil - a nationality.

However., the populer term of use is Sinhala - Hindu New year.

As far as I understand, this celebration can trase it's root's into the ancient King's time of Sri Lanka and as per the records (and as far as I know) it was started somewhere during the rane of King Parakramabahu of the Anuradhapura era.

So why did they start this ? (according to the "mahaweli wanshaya - which chapter I can't remember.. I think it's volume 11 or something)

They said, the king brought hoards and hoards of Indian slaves to build tanks and do other petty things around the country. Yes, also the kings has said to have had a special nag of getting down Indian Princesses for his personal brothel :)

Although by those days, the Jullian calender which we follow now was un-heard of, the Sri Lankan people was following the Moon Calender so did the Indians.

(From what I read) they say the King has named the New year day (of the moon calender) as Sinahlese and "Hindu" new year to satisfy the slaves comman wealth and the princesses in his brothel.

So why did the king "DID NOT" named it as Buddist-Hindu new year???????

SIMPLE., becuase those days there was "hardly" any other religion than "buddism" which was followed by Sri Lankans :)

Simple example and simple answer to anyone who's wondering on how did the name came to being isn't it?

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

PS.

I have been getting these simmilar mails from a "cult" called "MAHASOHON KALLIYA" and brutes and brats of all sorts.

I personally see a lack of education and understanding in these so called "web cults" who are suppose to look into the interests of "sinhalese" These idiots acts no second to a die hard "jihad member of Osama bin laden"

No Kidding, seriously. Someone should really talk some sense into these under-educated stupid dickheads who marginalize them selves as DA SAVIOURS of the Sinhala Race.

and just in case if anyone of these so called "cult members" are reading this..

GO BACK TO SCHOOL AND LEARN SOME HISTROY .... YOU DUMB FU_KING MORONS

   100 % agreed

I agree with u X-pert ...this have to be called as Srilankan Awrudda ....
    most srilankans celebrate this....
as i know not chatholics & also muslims celebrate this or even respect this...
did u see fazaal's siggy wishing a happy new year..that's a great example...
so this should be srilankans new year or some thing...
only my thoughts ...plz don't ger upset guys...:)
But machan there are many differenses between the way that Sinhalese and Tamil celebrates new year!
Tamils do more things than us for new year like puttin "Kolam" etc.
Calling it Srilankan new year depends on how Indians(Tamils) celebrate it.
Its really good if we can say like that!

Sorry, but that's a stupid answer.

NO ONE., let me reapeat. NO ONE can "OWN" a festival.

So the next thing we know, the Germans will declare WAR against the beer loving alchoholic Sri Lankans for holding the "Octoberfest":lol:

What Sri Lankan people in general need is an understanding of "where" and "when" to draw a "clear" line between Rasism, Petrotisism and "SHEER STUPIDNESS"

I see this topic of Talking "who owns the celebration" is just pure stupid. We need not have to go "overboard" with our immotions to satisfy the ethnic confussion which in this country.

It's just about, " Understand and respect my space and freedom, and I will do the same to you"

ex: Let me celebrate Vesak by putting a Humangouse lodspeaker and blasting out buddist preaching all throughout the week.......................and Vice versa I will let you do the same for a week on Christman carrols for a week.........

But if you just run to the police and complain that you are disturbed, but expect me to listen to all the preaching for a week because you are the MAJORITY.. then my son........."WE HAVE A PROBLEM"

So regardless of you being following any religion of any cast.............. Just respect my space and freedom, and I will most definetely do the same towards you and honour you"

That's it...............all other's are just NGO created BULLSHIT

Yes that really make sense when the time whn King brought monks for "Upasampada" from Buruma buddhisum was facing lots of trobels. and also
There was a great influence of hindu because many years indian kings ruled sri lanka (Elara, Kaalinga Magha, and those 7 came in Valagamba times:() for many years...
Because of it Buddhist Tempels also have this statues of Hindu Gods.
I think this word evolved as Sinhala/Hindu new year because of that!
