guess it's time to create a home entertainment setup. I already use plex, which is a local streaming server.
If you are a bit technical, go for something like Jellyfin running on Linux. 100% open source unlike Plex

pi hole. But that's a headache that you need to constantly update. But doesn't work on those pre video ads.

already running plex on my linux server. I'm using plex mostly because of the tv app. I tried kodi but didn't really like it because there's no easy way to run it as a daemon out of the box and I don't want to fuck around with things. will give jellyfin a try

A little heads up - Jellyfin likes to have a GPU that supports transcoding (Software transcoding - not good). So when you are tinkering with it just don't tick all the options under GPU acceleration. Find out what your GPU supports first. Jellyfin doesn't alway find the correct movie or TV series so you need to keep an eye on that. Lastly a TV series/Documentary series with multiple episodes are considered as a TV series while a documentary with one video is considered a movie. So you need to be creative with that when you are creating libraries else Jellyfin will never find the correct movie info even you force it manually.

thanks for the heads up. will give it a try. I have an amd ryzen processor with integrated graphics. seems like it should work without much of an issue.
seems like there's even an app for my tv - https://jellyfin.org/posts/webos-july2022/

yeah, I have a linux box with plex installed. I've tried both the DLNA server and the plex server from plex and both works great. I've never tried it on windows though. I don't personally like kodi because I have to open it to run the DLNA server or mess with config as mentioned here. I've enabled plex service with systemctl to start it automatically when I turn on the machine
