    Friends,

I'm a I'm a final year student of Bachelor of Information Technology (External) degree at University of Colombo School of Computing (2009 – 2012). But I won't be able to complete that this year. So, I hope to complete it in the next year. Mean while, I want to work. So first of all, let me tell you what I know & capable of at the moment.

I have a good knowledge in J2SE 1.5. Although, whatever about the SCJP at the moment (I got 73% without cheating ), I’ve some practical knowledge. & I'm also familiar with J2EE & J2ME. I've at least a fundamental knowledge in HTML, PHP, JavaScript, CSS, XML, Ajax & Android. I've been using Photoshop for years, since I'm interested in that too. For more than 1 1/2 years, I've been using Linux (mostly Ubuntu) operating systems.

I love to learn different subjects & do experiments. Like creative thinking. This may sounds like bluffing. But, I've learned a lot of things in my life well by self-studying. As far as I know about me, I'm good at it. & I can adapt to new things quickly.

So what I want to know is, anything about choosing a career in IT field, considering the above facts. Specially, if you can tell me anything about the followings, that'll be very useful to me.

    - Software Engineer
    - QA
    - Web Developer
    - Business Analyst
    - Linux Related

    Thank you very much :)

I will try to generalize my answer as possible.

Since you have sound knowledge in java and j2SE and web technologies i think it is better not to choose web development ( not mass level web applications im saying about web sites and small web apps that could be done in PHP likewise )

In SE track and QA track when we took what happen around the world both positions has the same recognition ( i should say it is bunch of SL fools discriminate QA positions :angry::angry: here. But they are value as SE s )

Also now a days both QAs and SE want to have programming knowledge. Its not the same old days that SE s do coding and QAs do manual inputs. There are automation frameworks test suites and tools to make manual process automate and test beds make life easy. So for QA it is necessary to have a knowledge in programming.

When consider salary scales and career path both SE and QA paid well ( um not talking about QAs that do things manually.) where i did my intern QA got paid 45k basic and SE 55k basic. So it is your choice to determine what you want to be.

To be a BA i guess you should have fair knowledge in business world, not only knowing programming will be enough. Also domain knowledge too important. So it depends on how you know the game.

    Good luck!

    Machan,
I have no idea whether you'l be able to find a good It rel Job without completing Degree.Try to finish it first. As an Intern u can get 8000-12000 payment.

    SE-Good Sal/Pressurize/Less Domain Knowledge
QA-sal Not so bad/Full Domain Knowledge/Free(little comparing to SE)/Can become a Support Engineer/PM/Business analyst by adding some more Qualifications.
    WEB-No Idea
    Linux-No Idea

Some one can comment if i'm wrong. ::yes:
