Pardew: Newcastle will be patient in the transfer window

    118802hp2.jpg

Newcastle United boss Alan Pardew has reiterated his desire to add to his squad, but insists there is no desperate need to do so and he is prepared to wait for the right deal.

The Magpies have been relatively quiet in this summer's transfer window, the only movement being the acquisitions of youngsters Romain Amalfitano, Gael Bigirimana and Curtis Good.

For several weeks now they have been linked with Lille right-back Mathieu Debuchy, but have yet to agree a fee despite the Frenchman's desire to leave the club.

However, Pardew is not worried about the lack of activity, claiming it's more important to keep his current squad together.

"I don't know if not signing anyone is bad news," Pardew told The Sun. "I would say that bad news is losing a player, especially one of our top players and I do believe we are pretty strong in terms of that not happening.

"But if we get players in then great. I do need a couple of players, maybe three. However, I am very comfortable about going into our first game without any. If, to get a deal done, we need to show patience then that's what we will do.

"It's better to be patient with the ones that you want, rather than going down the list a little bit."

Valerenga 0-0 Manchester United: Vidic returns but Rooney, Nani & Co. fail to hit top gear

    Rooney-Valerenga.jpg

Manchester United played out a 0-0 draw against Valerenga at the Ullevaal Stadion in Oslo in a match notable for the return of Nemanja Vidic to the Red Devils' defence.

Danny Welbeck was twice denied by goalkeeper Gudmund Kongshavn in the first half, while Antonio Valencia drove a shot narrowly wide after the break.

Sir Alex Ferguson (who was not at the game) will have been most pleased, however, to see his captain come through an hour of football unscathed after several months on the sideline with a knee injury sustained in December.

United named a strong side for the clash as Mike Phelan took over first-team duties, with Rio Ferdinand reunited with Vidic at centre-back. Valencia and youngster Michael Keane started in the full-back positions, while Wayne Rooney partnered Welbeck in attack.

Paul Scholes and Michael Carrick quickly took control of the ball in the centre of the park, frequently seeking to send the ball into the wide areas where, on the right, Valencia and Nani were linking up to good effect.

Valerenga, though, went closest in the opening 20 minutes, with Serbian midfielder Bojan Zajic releasing a 25-yard shot that swerved across goal and narrowly wide of Anders Lindegaard's left post.

United looked more penetrative after Ashley Young moved to a central position behind Welbeck around the 20-minute mark, with Rooney retreating to the left of midfield. The former Aston Villa man latched on to Nani's cut-back cross but saw his low shot blocked.

Space continued to open up on the wings but the Red Devils could not take advantage of the crossing opportunities presented to them, with two deliveries aimed at the back post by Young the closest Ferguson's team came to breaking the deadlock.

Rooney found the space outside the box to pick out Welbeck's dash across goal with a cross as half-time approached, but the striker could not keep his flicked header down.

The pair combined once more to engineer a neat one-two on the edge of the box only for Welbeck to lose control of the ball as he advanced towards Kongshavn, who rushed out of his six-yard box to smother.

The goalkeeper was to deny Welbeck on two more occasions before the end of the half with a couple of outstanding individual moments. First, he produced a stunning reaction save to beat away the striker's powerful first-time shot from Nani's reverse pass, repeating the feat to palm away a shot to his right after Welbeck had been sent through on goal.

Ahmed Suleiman almost gave the Norwegian team the lead against the run of play on the half-time whistle, beating Valencia to an unpredictable cross that bounced to the back of the penalty area, but the Nigerian sent his header just wide.

Substitute goalkeeper Lars Hirschfeld was immediately called into action after the break, bravely, and successfully, diving at the feet of Nani after the winger had rushed behind the Valerenga defence.

Rooney, quiet for much of the match in Oslo, peeled off his marker to meet Valencia's cross a short time afterwards but could not get over the ball and headed beyond the crossbar.

Phelan introduced Anderson and Shinji Kagawa in an attempt to liven up proceedings around the hour mark, with Welbeck and Vidic making way.

United should have had a penalty when Martin Pusic fouled Nani just inside the box, but the referee judged the offence to have taken place outside of the area and Anderson's free-kick was easily claimed by Hirschfeld.

The two substitutes, Kagawa in particular, certainly added some extra impetus to United's attacking play but Anderson was left rueing his own caution when Young pulled a driven cross back across goal that the arriving Brazilian could not quite reach.

Valerenga counter-attacked on occasion and after Chuma Anene's shot was deflected wide, Rooney preserved his team's clean-sheet by clearing off the line when the forward took advantage of Lindegaard's collision with Carrick to head towards an empty goal.

It was Valencia who came as close as any United player to finding the match's opening goal, bursting forward from right-back to take on Scholes' pass before shooting just wide of the post in a manner reminiscent of his brilliant goal against Blackburn Rovers during the previous campaign.

Kagawa went on to slide a pass just beyond the reach of any of the red shirts lining up in the penalty area before substitute Javier Hernandez failed to get proper contact on Valencia's cross as Valerenga held on to deny the Red Devils victory ahead of Wednesday's marquee friendly against Barcelona.

Wolfsburg 0 Man City 2: Blues in cruise control as Aguero and Yaya strike

Sergio Aguero and Yaya Toure were both on target as Manchester City beat Wolfsburg 2-0 in their friendly encounter at the Volkswagen Arena.

City took the opportunity to give a number of their star names a run out in Germany and Carlos Tevez was the first to try his luck after just five minutes but it took until the 39th minute for Aguero to break the deadlock, bursting clear to poke the ball past Diego Benaglio.

Toure nearly made it two before the half-time whistle but some stout defending from the home side kept the score to just 1-0.

Wolfsburg tried to apply a little pressure after the break but City were soon back on the offensive, with Toure neatly dispatching his shot on goal to make it 2-0 after 54 minutes.

Joe Hart did not see too much action in the goal, with Marcel Schafer's shot at 64 minutes forcing him into making one of his few real saves during the 90 minutes.

Edin Dzeko got 15 minutes of action towards the end while Aguero took a kick on the ankle 11 minutes from time, immediately being replaced by Roque Santa Cruz as Roberto Mancini took no chances with the Argentinian striker.

Edin Dzeko scored twice as Manchester City beat Limerick 4-0

    Edin Dzeko: Scored twice

Captain for the day Samir Nasri got the game off to a lively start when a high clearance from the French midfielder evaded the entire Limerick back line, almost putting out-of-favour Paraguayan striker Roque Santa Cruz through on an open goal.

City broke the deadlock on the half hour when a weaving run from James Milner created space for the England international to roll the ball into the path of Dzeko, who bundled home from close range.

The visitors doubled their lead on 42 minutes when defender Dedryck Boyata received the ball from youngster Denis Suarez and calmly slotted home.

And Dzeko found himself clear of the Limerick defence just a minute later, firing low and hard to put the Barclays Premier League champions 3-0 up.

The second half was played out at a more steady pace, only reigniting on 78 minutes when 21-year-old Italian midfielder Luca Scapuzzi fired home a fourth for City.

Limerick began to press as the game wore on but were unable to find a way through a solid defence.

United in the box seat for Van Persie after City boss Mancini concedes defeat in striker race

Roberto Mancini has admitted defeat in his pursuit of Arsenal's Robin van Persie.

The Italian has been desperate to bring the striker to the Etihad but have faced stiff competition from Manchester United and Serie A giants Juventus.

And after it emerged that Sir Alex Ferguson had stayed in Britain while his team were in Norway in a bid to force through a £20million deal for the Dutchman, Mancini has revealed his club are no longer in the race.

    article-2184073-1453869A000005DC-882_468x331.jpg

Uncertain future: Robin van Persie doesn't know where he'll play next season

When asked about the Gunners star, the City boss said: 'Van Persie? No, I don't think he will come here.'

United now expect to get the coveted signature of last season's Premier League top goalscorer by the time the new campaign kicks off on August 19.

The club also expect to add young Brazilian Lucas Moura to their ranks in the coming days.

Meanwhile, after the failed attempt to lure Van Persie to the Premier League champions, Mancini expects Edin Dzeko to remain.

Battle: Roberto Mancini has said Manchester City are out of the race, leaving the door open for United and Sir Alex Ferguson to sign Van Persie from Arsenal

The Bosnian has failed to live up to the £27million City paid Woflsburg for him 18 months ago, and is wanted by several top clubs around Europe.

However, responding to speculation about Juve and AC Milan's interest in the forward, Mancini added on Italian television: 'I'm pleased, as this means we have good players, but it’s pretty unlikely he will leave.'

Speaking to German media this week, Dzeko hit out at his lack of playing time - he started just 16 league games last season - and suggested he would be ready to leave for the right club.

    article-2184073-144E5D8E000005DC-51_468x286.jpg

Staying put: Edin Dzeko is now unlikely to leave Manchester City

He said: 'In the second half of last season, I suddenly got to start far fewer games - and I’ve got no idea why.

'I lost my rhythm. I joined City in order to play in matches. I never imagined that things would turn out the way they have. I am too good for the bench. If I continue to sit matches out, then anything is possible.'

But Mancini added: 'He is right to say it’s no fun being on the bench, but when you join a big club then competition is normal.

PSG poised to hijack United's £30m bid for Brazil ace Moura

    article-0-1426156C000005DC-975_306x382.jpg

Wanted: United are interested in Moura

Paris Saint-Germain have launched a last-minute bid to hijack Lucas Moura's move to Manchester United.

Reports in Brazil claim the Sao Paulo playmaker has virtually agreed to join the rich French club on a five-year deal.

The 19-year-old's agent Wagner Ribeiro held talks with PSG's sporting director Leonardo last week and watched their friendly against Barcelona before reporting back to Lucas.

United had been confident that their pursuit was coming to an end after receiving encouragement that their £30million bid would finally be accepted.

The Old Trafford club had even prepared the ground for Lucas to have a medical over the weekend, but the Brazil national team insist they will not release him until the end of their participation in the Olympic football tournament.

But it is understood that PSG, owned by rich Qataris, are prepared to offer a better fee and terms for one of South America's hottest prospects.

And authoritative Brazilian media outlet Globoesporte also claim that Lucas is reluctant to move to Manchester.

Agent Ribeiro also represents Robinho who has told the teenager that the northern English city is boring.

    :(:(:(:angry:PSG make €45m Lucas bid

    lucasmoura20120318_576x324.jpg

Inter Milan president Massimo Moratti has claimed that Paris St Germain have offered Sao Paulo €45 million for in-demand midfielder Lucas Moura, a fee he believes is "completely illogical".

Lucas, 19, is one of football's hottest properties at present, with the Nerazzurri, Manchester United and PSG among those clubs interested in swooping for him.

But while United had appeared to be in the driving seat to secure a €30 million move, Moratti believes the Red Devils will be trumped by PSG - who are prepared to splash out an extra €15 million to land the Brazil international. And the Nerazzurri chief says Inter are now definitely out of the running to sign Lucas because they are unable to compete with the financial might of the Qatari-backed Parisiens.

"We would never have gone up to that sum," Moratti told Sky Sport Italia. "In any case, there are no regrets that we didn't finish off the move, as the cost was already pretty high a few days ago."The €45 million that PSG offered is completely illogical and for us it would have been very out of key with our approach.

"PSG are starting a new era, so they are completely reconstructing the squad. At least I can relish the fact I'm saving money."

Maicon rejects Paris Saint-Germain in hope of Real Madrid switch

    163445hp2.jpg

Inter right back Maicon has turned down a move to Paris Saint-Germain, as he eyes a reunion with former coach Jose Mourinho at Real Madrid, according to Sky Sport Italia.

The 31-year-old is out of favor at the Nerazzurri, and as a result has been the subject of much speculation over the past few weeks, with the likes of PSG, Chelsea and Madrid rumored to be interested in acquiring his services.

The Brazilian's agent confirmed that his client feels "It is time to move on", and the player has not been included in the San Siro club's Europa League squad for its qualifying tie with Hajduk Split.

Reports suggest Carlo Ancelotti's PSG put in a bid of around 8-10 million euros for the Brazil international, an offer that would have been readily accepted by Massimo Moratti as he looks to fund an offer for Sao Paulo youngster Lucas Moura.

But Maicon is not keen on a move to the Ligue 1 side, and instead would prefer a switch to La Liga champion Madrid, or Champions League winner Chelsea. His contract expires at the end of next season and there has been little movement from the San Siro side in offering the player an extension.

Maicon, who represented Monaco for two seasons before moving to the Italian giants in 2006, may even extend his contract in Lombardy, but that option, according to the reports, remains very much unlikely.

Meanwhile, Moratti confirmed on Monday that Inter had pulled out of the race for Lucas Mourq.

Jonjo Shelvey looking to have an impact in Liverpool's midfield

    184872hp2.jpg

Liverpool's young starlet Jonjo Shelvey wants to add to the already deep competition for the midfield starting spots with the Reds.

Highly touted as one of Liverpool's top prospects, the 20-year-old hopes to break into a central midfield rotation that features Steven Gerrard, Jordan Henderson, Lucas, Charlie Adam and Jay Spearing.

Shelvey's chances might be boosted by the subpar performances of Adam, who is largely seen a bust since joining the Reds from Blackpool in a transfer worth 7 million pounds in 2011.

"It's a lot of guys fighting for three positions, it's going to be tough this season. But it's a challenge that I'm relishing," Shelvey told Goal.com.

Shelvey has already made 28 Premier League appearances for Liverpool since arriving from Charlton in 2010. He credits some of his development to watching club legend Steven Gerrard on the field, long admiring the England captain and now watching and practicing with the midfielder up close.

"Stevie's had such a big impact for the club and country, the way he plays in the midfield is magnificent," Shelvey said. "To be on the same team as him is great."

Shelvey also believes himself to be a good fit with new manager Brendan Rodgers as the coach emphasizes ball movement and passing, both areas where the young midfielder has shown promise.

"It's been good because obviously, he likes to pass the ball around," Shelvey said. "It fits the way how I play and the way some of the other guys play, so it's exciting."

One other player who Shelvey insists is a good fit is Andy Carroll, who continues to be linked with a move away from Anfield. Rodgers initially said that he was interested in loaning away the England forward, even though his stance publicly has changed over the past few weeks.

Shelvey believes that Carroll can fit into Liverpool's new system.

"Obviously, I've only played with Andy a few times last season but I know what he's about [as a player]," Shelvey stated. "It's not down to me whether or not he stays, it's down to the boss but Andy is a great player. I think he can fit in."
