Oscar to wear No.11 shirt at Chelsea after Drogba departure

    198465hp2.jpg

Chelsea has confirmed that new signing Oscar will wear the No.11 shirt for the 2012-13 season following Didier Drogba's move to Shanghai Shenhua. The Brazil international, who is on Olympics duty with his country at London 2012, will take over from the Ivorian whose exploits as the club's former No.11 saw him become a legend at Stamford Bridge before leaving, after having clinched the Champions League, in the summer.

Oscar joined Roberto Di Matteo's side from Internacional last month for a fee believed to be in the region of 25 million pounds and will battle with likes of fellow new signing Eden Hazard, Juan Mata, Florent Malouda and Daniel Sturridge for a place in the Blues' starting XI.

The 20-year-old follows in the footsteps of the likes of Damien Duff and Boudewijn Zenden, who both wore the No.11 shirt prior to Drogba taking over in 2006.

Dennis Wise is another club legend to have had the No.11 on his back, having taken the shirt back in 1993 when squad numbers were first introduced in English football.

you must be success at Chelsea with this number..! cuz 11 was Worn by a Chelsea Legend, True legend..! so don't disrespect this number..! good luck boy..!

    :(Sao Paulo confirm Lucas bid

    lucamourabrazil_576x324.jpg

Paris Saint-Germain have been in contact with Sao Paulo about a €45 million deal for Lucas Moura, the Brazilian club have confirmed.

Sao Paulo vice-president Joao Paulo de Jesus Lopes, speaking to newspaper Le 10 Sport, said officials from the big-spending French club had approached them about signing the 19-year-old.Lucas has been linked with a move to Manchester United - who have already tabled a bid for him - while Inter Milan have admitted the player's valuation is too expensive.

"We have been probed by PSG about Lucas," Lopes said, revealing that Leonardo, the PSG sporting director and a former Sao Paulo player, was in regular contact with the club."Leonardo has a very good relationship with Sao Paulo," he said. "But, for now, nothing is definite."

Reports suggest that the terms of a transfer to PSG would see Moura staying in Brazil until January, but Lopes stressed that the player would have the final say on any transfer."The possibility [of a move to Paris] exists, but it is down to the player's interests," he said. "The policy of Sao Paulo is to follow the desires of the player.

"If the player wishes to leave, Sao Paulo will not create any obstacle. But we must receive a proposal that is appropriate."It's a financial issue. Paris Saint-Germain is a big club in European football, and if the player's interests and also the club's are met, I do not see why it would not happen."

On Monday, the Inter Milan president Massimo Moratti claimed PSG had offered Sao Paulo €45 million for Lucas, a fee he described as "completely illogical".

He said Inter were now definitely out of the running to sign Lucas because they are unable to compete with the financial might of the Qatari-backed Paris outfit."We would never have gone up to that sum," Moratti told Sky Sport Italia. "In any case, there are no regrets that we didn't finish off the move, as the cost was already pretty high a few days ago.

"The €45 million that PSG offered is completely illogical, and for us it would have been very out of key with our approach. PSG are starting a new era, so they are completely reconstructing the squad. At least I can relish the fact I'm saving money."

Gotze targets comeback in Dortmund's Bundesliga opener

Borussia Dortmund attacking midfielder Mario Gotze is hoping to make his return to Jurgen Klopp's first team for his side's Bundesliga opener against Werder Bremen.

The 20-year-old has been forced to miss much of his side's preseason preparation by a troublesome eye infection, but is likely to start training in the next few days.
The Germany international missed a large portion of last season with a string of niggling injury problems, and although he is working against the clock, Gotze is confident he will be fit for the Signal Iduna Park clash on Aug. 24.

"Improvement is in sight", he told de Ruhrnachrichten. "There will be no problem [making the Bremen game]."

Klopp will be further buoyed by the news that veteran fullback Patrick Owomoyela is also back on the training pitch.

The 32-year-old right back has been sidelined for three months with a calf injury, but is now on the comeback trail and determined to make what's left of his preseason count.

"[My recovery] is on schedule," he said, "but a game is something other than training."

Borussia Dortmund begins competitive action with the DFL Superpokal against Bayern Munich on Aug. 12, before a DFB-Pokal first round match against Oberneuland on Aug. 18.

Rooney hoping to begin the new season in style for Manchester United

    183090hp2.jpg

Wayne Rooney is happy with his preseason preparations and is confident he will be ready to go in time for the start of the new season with Manchester United.

The 26-year-old made his first preseason appearance in the Red Devils’ goalless draw against Valerenga at the weekend and is looking to build up his match sharpness before the club open their Premier League campaign against Everton on August 20.

Speaking to reporters ahead of their preseason clash against Barcelona, Rooney revealed: "I feel good. I played two games at Euro 2012, I've since played against Valerenga.

"Everybody needs games to get up to match fitness - not just me. I'm training well, though, and I'm looking forward to the next few games. Hopefully by the start of the season I'll be ready to play.

“I'm happy with how I'm doing. I've been training for almost two weeks and I've been working hard. Everything's going well so far."

Rooney also admitted he has been impressed with new United signing Shinji Kagawa.
The Japan international moved from Dortmund at the beginning of the transfer window and has featured heavily in the club’s preseason tours, notching his first goal against Shanghai Shenhua.
"Shinji's settled quite quickly. He's a talented player, he likes to get on the ball and keep it simple. He's very effective on the ball,” Rooney added.

“It's great to have that sort of player in the team. I'm looking forward to playing with him and I think he'll create a lot of chances for myself and the other forwards. It's exciting to have him in the team."

Olympic 100m champion Usain Bolt recently revealed he would like the chance to play for the Premier League giants but Rooney believes the sprinter would be better suited sticking with his current sport.

"He'd obviously add a bit of speed to the team,” he added. “But they are different sports. I think he's best staying on the track.”

Milla sacked as Spain Under 21 coach after Olympic elimination

Luis Milla has been relieved of his post as Spain Under 21 coach after his side's poor showing at this summer's Olympic Games.
Under 19 coach Julen Lopetegui will now fill the 46-year-old's shoes and step up to take the reins of the U21s.

The former Spain international had led his nation to victory at the 2011 European Under 21 Championships, but a little over 12 months later it was a different story as La Roja were eliminated without scoring a single goal in a group that also included Morocco, Honduras and Japan.

In an official statement issued on Tuesday, the Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) moved swiftly to remove Milla from his position and confirmed the contract of his assistant, Juan Carlos Martinez Castrejo, would also not be renewed.

His replacement will take charge of the U21s for an upcoming fixtures against Switzerland on Sept. 6 and Croatia on Sept. 10.

Lopetegui led his side to back-to-back victories at the Under 19 European Championship in 2011 and 2012 and the quarterfinals of the 2011 Under 20 World Cup.

Fabregas praises Arsenal's deal to sign Cazorla

Barcelona midfielder Cesc Fabregas has hailed Arsenal's capture of Santi Cazorla from Malaga as "a great signing".

Cazorla completed his much anticipated move to the Emirates Stadium today for an undisclosed fee, which Goal.com understands to be in the region of 22.6 million euros.

The 27-year-old Spanish international brings with him a wealth of experience, having won 45 caps for the national side, adding an element of attacking verve and versatility to the Arsenal midfield.

Former Gunners captain Fabregas, who spent eight years in north London, has expressed his delight at the move, stating on Twitter: "I'm so happy to hear that my mate Santi Cazorla is finally a gooner. Top guy, special player. A great signng! Come onnn!"

Cazorla made a name for himself at Villareal before securing a 20m euro move to cash-rich Malaga last summer.

There has been increased uncertainty regarding the club’s financial future in recent weeks, with the possibility of relegation to the Spanish second division, should debts remain unpaid.

Cazorla, who has been linked with Arsenal throughout the summer, has now officially joined the club and will link up with his new teammates in Germany prior to their preseason friendly against Cologne.

Heynckes: Bayern must work harder in defense

    200770hp2.jpg

Jupp Heynckes admits Bayern Munich still have work to do in defense following its Liga Tota! Cup campaign at the weekend.

The Bavarians had to settle for third spot in the annual preseason tournament after a 2-2 draw against Werder Bremen and a 1-0 win over Hamburg, but while veteran coach was pleased with the side's forward play, he is demanding an improvement at the back.

"Our attacking play is marked by imagination, intelligence and skill. However, we have to work harder as a team in defense, which we did outstandingly well in the first third of last season," Heynckes was quoted as saying on the club's official website.

"We'll be working on that almost every day. Once the players are rested and have restored their energy levels, it'll be much easier to train this area and make it happen in matches.

"We have three weeks to go until the league restarts, and two weeks until the cup tie. We'll use the time to run into form and take ourselves back to the top."

Bayern start the 2012-13 Bundesliga campaign with a trip to newly-promoted Greuther Furth.

Chelsea makes 'serious approach' for Azpilicueta

    199358hp2.jpg

Chelsea has made a "serious approach" for Olympique de Marseille right back Cesar Azpilicueta, according to the president of the French club.

The Spaniard would be Roberto Di Matteo's fourth summer signing, as the Italian looks to add depth and quality to his Champions League-winning side.

Azpilicueta appears to be the next name on the list, with Marseille reportedly willing to listen to offers of over 8 million pounds.

Marseille president Vincent Labrune, is quoted in The Sun as saying: "Chelsea have made a serious approach for Cesar [Azpilicueta]."

Chelsea is short on options in the position after allowing Jose Bosingwa to leave the club on a free transfer, with Branislav Ivanovic and Paulo Ferreira currently the Blues' only senior right backs.

The 22-year-old started his career at Osasuna before moving to the south of France in 2010, and helped Marseille to the Coupe de la Ligue in consecutive seasons.

But he has found his international opportunities limited, missing out on a Euro 2012 call up with Real Madrid defender Alvaro Arbeloa preferred.

Sao Paulo admits Lucas Moura could join Paris Saint-Germain

    200889hp2.jpg

Sao Paulo vice-president Joao Paulo de Jesus Lopes has confirmed that Paris Saint-Germain are interested in signing Lucas Moura.

The 19-year-old was previously linked with clubs such as Inter and Manchester United, but the Serie A side recently pulled out of the race to sign the winger, while no bid has yet been tabled by the Reds.

Consequently, PSG now seems to be sitting in pole position to sign Lucas, with the Tricolor supremo now admitting that a transfer could be on the cards if the Brazilian is open to a move to the Ligue 1 giants.

"PSG have made an inquiry about Lucas. [PSG sporting director] Leonardo has a very good relationship with Sao Paulo, but no definite decision has been made yet," Paulo de Jesus Lopes told Le 10 Sport.

"It's a financial issue. Paris Saint-Germain are a big club in European football, and if the player's interests and also the club's are met, I do not see why it could not happen.

"A transfer is an option, but it is up to the player to decide. Sao Paulo's policy is to listen to the player's desire. If Lucas wants to leave the club, Sao Paulo will not hamper a move. However, he will only leave for the right price."

Lucas is currently representing the Seleccao at the Olympic Games in London and is expected to make a decision about his future once the tournament reaches its climax.

Arsenal goalkeeper Szczesny grateful for Euro 2012 experience

    190961hp2.jpg

Arsenal goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny has claimed he appreciates his torrid Euro 2012 experience this summer.

The Polish number one was sent off in the host's opening game and subsequently only played 69 minutes of his country's campaign, with Poland crashing out in the group stages.

And after enjoying a strong breakthrough season at the Emirates Stadium, Szczesny admitted the events in Poland and Ukraine were tough to take, but he believes the whole experience will help him in the long term.

Szczesny told the club's official website: "It was obviously quite tough getting sent off in the first game and then being left out for the third match, but the experience of being there was different, something I have never had before.

"Every time I play for the national team and hear the national anthem it is probably the best feeling a player can experience. But then the buzz [at Euro 2012] was unbelievable and if anything we wanted it too much.

"We were up for [the opening game], we had been preparing for four years and for me it all finished quite quickly. But to experience it will make not only myself, but the whole team, stronger."

And the 22-year-old is ready to accept his dismissal as simply another element of a steep learning curve, insisting the events in Poland and Ukraine have helped him to mature as a player.

"Obviously the sending off is [part of] a learning curve for me and hopefully that will never happen again. But it has made me more mature," Szczesny continued.

"Before the game I had never felt better in my life. Physically I was really fit and mentally strong and it just shows you that you never know what is around the corner. In that way it made me more mature."

Barcelona will be just as strong as under Guardiola, says Edmilson

    24625hp2.jpg

Edmilson believes Barcelona will be just as strong under Tito Vilanova as they were under Pep Guardiola over the past few years.

The latter opted not to renew his contract as Barca coach earlier this summer and was replaced by his former assistant, and the former Brazil international claims the club's philosophy will assure that the Catalans remain on top of their game.

"I think that the club’s philosophy goes way back to the time of [Johan] Cruyff, and Barcelona have always shown that by playing great football," Edmilson was quoted as saying on the club's official website.

"I have never seen a team play as well as they did under Guardiola, with all that possession, so many goals and such quality.

"Maybe it will be a bit harder now, but Tito has been working with these players for a while now and he knows their mentality. He knows them well.

"The philosophy will be the same and Barca will still be Barca, just as strong as in the last few years."

Edmilson, 36, made over 70 Liga appearances for the Catalan giants between 2004 and 2008.

Suarez signs new long-term Liverpool deal

    182536hp2.jpg

Luis Suarez has signed a new long-term contract at Liverpool to end speculation about his immediate future.

The Uruguayan put pen to paper on an improved deal on Tuesday afternoon, a move that has been confirmed by the club on its official site.

It comes only 24 hours after Suarez returned to training at Liverpool to team up with new manager Brendan Rodgers for the first time following Uruguay’s exit from the Olympics at the group stage.

The striker has been recently linked with a move to Juventus after the Serie A champion's attempts to lure Edinson Cavani from Napoli appeared to stall - but this latest development has called an end to the continued speculation over the 25-year-old's future at Anfield.

"To sign a new contract with Liverpool is unbelievable for me because I am so happy here at both the club and also in the city," the striker told the club's website after signing his new deal. "That is important for me and I am very happy with my new contract.

"When you are a kid, everybody wants to play for Liverpool. I am here now and it is a dream for me, and now I am a Liverpool fan."

Mexico 3-1 Japan: El Tri advances to the gold-medal game

    201792hp2.jpg

LONDON -- Mexico had stated all along that it was going for a medal, and now it has one.

The only question left is whether it will be gold or silver.

For the first time in the nation's history, Mexico will finish better than fourth place in the Olympic Games after defeating Japan 3-1 in the semifinals at Wembley Stadium.

El Tri will face either South Korea or Brazil for the gold medal later this week in London.

After falling behind by a goal early on following a wonderful strike from Japan's Yuki Otsu, Mexico responded with a header from Marco Fabian and a rocket from Oribe Peralta. Javier Cortes added to Tri's tally for good measure in the closing seconds.

Mexico remains unbeaten in five Olympic matches this summer, only drawing once in its opener against South Korea. The CONCACAF champs won Group B to set up the match against Group A's runner-up Japan.

It took just 12 minutes for the Japanese to find the back of the net and put Mexico in an early hole for the first time during the tournament.

Yuki Otsu scored his third goal of these Games on a one-touch shot from just outside the box. The ball was perfectly placed into the upper 90, leaving goalkeeper Jose Corona with no chance of making a save.

    But Mexico would respond.

In 31st minute, Giovani Dos Santos whipped in a corner kick with his left foot and after a Japanese defender tapped it with his head, Fabian was able to hammer the ball home. It was his first goal of the competition for Fabian and first conceded by Japan in five Olympic games.

Mexico gained control for the remainder of the half and the two teams entered halftime all tied up. But El Tri would be forced to play the second half without leading-scorer Dos Santos.

The Tottenham midfielder was replaced at halftime by Raul Jimenez in a very questionable decision by coach Fernando Luis Tena, who had benched Dos Santos for the first two games before moving him in the starting lineup for the previous three matches.

The second half went back and forth before Mexico took the lead in the 62nd minute thanks to a giveaway from Japan and an incredible shot from Peralta.

The 28-year-old striker - one of the three over-age players along with Corona and Carlos Salcido for Mexico - took advantage of a Japan turnover in the midfield. Javier Aquino disrupted the play and found Peralta for the strike.

Peralta and Dos Santos are the only Mexican players with multiple goals in the tournament.

Japan pushed toward the end but Mexico would be the team to add another goal to the entertaining match as Cortes walked the ball past Japanese defenders and fired past keeper Shuichi Gonda.
