Chelsea 4-1 Norwich: Torres and Hazard in the goals as Di Matteo’s men go four points clear

    216607hp2.jpg

Chelsea maintained its position at the top of the Premier League with a comfortable 4-1 win over Norwich on Saturday afternoon.

The visitors opened the scoring against the run of play through Grant Holt but Chelsea emphatically responded as Fernando Torres, Frank Lampard, Eden Hazard and Branislav Ivanovic all got on the scoresheet.

Despite both being at the center of controversy this week, Chelsea duo Ashley Cole and John Terry started the game, as Roberto Di Matteo made just three changes from his side’s midweek Champions League win over Nordsjaelland.

Meanwhile, after seeing his Norwich side beaten 5-2 in its last Premier League outing, Chris Hughton understandably made five changes, including handing Alexander Tettey his first Premier League start.

Given its last game ended in a 4-0 win, it was unsurprising to see Chelsea begin the encounter in confident mood, stroking the ball around a nervous-looking Norwich. And the hosts almost had reward for its early domination but saw Torres dither after beating the offside trap, allowing Leon Barnett back in to snuff out the danger.

That let off seemed to spark Norwich to life, but few inside Stamford Bridge would have expected the Canaries to go up the other end and grab the first goal with 11 minutes on the clock. Wes Hoolahan’s floated ball into the far post found Barnett, who had remained forward from a set piece, and the defender coolly nodded down for Holt to finish with aplomb.

That goal had doubtless come against the run of play, even at such an early stage, but the Blues wasted little time in amending the injustice. Just four minutes later a clever Juan Mata backheel allowed Ivanovic to cross from the right and Torres made no mistake this time, directing his header into the corner after getting a run on Barnett.

The fragile nature of Norwich’s confidence ensured that it would not take long for the league leaders to get another golden chance, and so it proved as Lampard doubled his side’s lead in the 22nd minute. Torres saw his athletic bicycle kick attempt repelled by Russell Martin but the ball fell straight to the 34-year-old midfielder, who smashed home from his customary position on the edge of the box.

The visitors made a valiant attempt to muster a way back into the game but saw their opponents evidence their superior cutting edge just seconds after defending a corner at the other end. The Blues cleared their lines as far as Mata, who led the charge up the pitch before intelligently sliding the ball into Hazard for the Belgian to slot past John Ruddy.

Despite some occasional defensive lapses, Di Matteo’s men were well worth their halftime lead and came out for the second period in similar mood. However, the visitors had clearly been rebuked by their manager and showed a defensive steel that had been sorely lacking in the first 45 minutes.

Regardless, the west London side got apt reward for its patience with 15 minutes remaining as Mata brilliantly controlled an overhit cross in the box, teeing up Ivanovic to strike first time beyond Ruddy.

The hosts engaged in some exhibition football from that point onwards but failed to add to their lead as Norwich desperately hung on.

Bayern Munich 2-0 Hoffenheim: Ribery double enough for the Bavarians

    216595hp2.jpg

Franck Ribery grabbed both goals as Bayern Munich bounced back from midweek disappointment to record a routine 2-0 victory over Hoffenheim.

The hosts controlled the match throughout, and the Frenchman was on hand to open the scoring just before the 20 minute mark, and he finished the job just after the half.

Bayern suffered a disappointing 3-1 defeat to BATE Borisov in midweek, but immediately set about looking to set the record straight, with Ribery finding some space on the left-hand side of the box and flashing a ball across the face of goal which no-one was able to turn in.

However, with the memories of a 7-1 drubbing at the Allianz Arena in March still fresh, Hoffenheim was resolute in defense and was fairly successful in limiting the Bavarians' chances.

A Thomas Muller cross was hastily hacked over Koen Casteels' bar by Daniel Williams, but soon enough, the hosts would find the opener.

Muller brilliantly fed Ribery, who turned Andreas Beck with some fine footwork, before firing a strike between Casteels' legs to net his first of the season.

Despite, going ahead, Bayern was still having problems converting its dominance into clear-cut chances. A Toni Kroos volley was deflected behind for a corner, from which Mario Mandzukic headed over.

At the other end, meanwhile, the only time the dominated visitors came close to threatening Jupp Heycnkes' side was when Manuel Neuer charged out of his goal to head away a chipped pass, only for the ball to fall behind Joselu, despite an unfortunate deflection off Jerome Boateng.

After its modest first-half efforts, Bayern returned after the break with renewed vigor, and within two minutes of the restart, it was two ahead.

Kroos failed to make meaningful contact with a cross from the right, but recovered to prod the ball into Ribery's path, and the former Marseille winger duly swept the ball into the top corner.

Bayern was cruising, and threatened to register a third when Ribery charged into the area once more, but failed to pick out Kroos.

Then Xherdan Shaqiri's quick footwork was followed by a ferocious right-footed shot which was deflected behind for a corner which Javi Martinez failed to make contact with, despite being well stationed.

The Spaniard was then within inches of notching his first goal in a Bayern shirt, but saw Shaqiri's cross sail past him, and made his frustration clear by kicking the woodwork.

Hoffenheim finally registered an effort in the 76th minute when Beck shot from all of 30 yards, but the strike was plucked out of the air with ease by Neuer.

But the match had long ceased to be a contest, and Bayern was able to able to make it seven wins from as many Bundesliga games this season.

Manchester City 3-0 Sunderland: Kolarov, Aguero and Milner ensure dominant victory

    176507hp2.jpg

MANCHESTER -- A classy Aleksander Kolarov free kick in the first half set the tone for a 3-0 dominating win for Manchester City over visiting Sunderland. Further goals from substitute Sergio Aguero and a late strike from James Milner set the seal on the three points and the champions' first clean-sheet of the season.

City's boss Roberto Mancini made several changes after his side was lucky to draw 1-1 against Dortmund in the club's midweek Champions League fixture. The Italian made seven changes to the starting 11, including starting Micah Richards over team captain Vincent Kompany.

The visitors made just one change from their first victory over the season against Wigan last Saturday with Carlos Cueller in for Titus Bramble in the heart of the Black Cats defense.

Cueller didn’t take long to make an impression and it wasn’t one he will remember fondly. In four minutes, the Spaniard loitered too long in possession and only a desperate lunge on Carlos Tevez stopped the Argentinian from having a shot on goal.

Cueller was booked for his troubles and then had to watch City defender Kolarov glide a 25-yard free kick with his left foot over the wall and into the roof of the net.

Sunderland found itself behind for the first time this season but the early setback didn’t seem to break its confidence early. The club is always well-organized under Martin O’Neill and the Black Cats soon gained a foothold with a Stephane Sessegnon volleying just over from the edge of the box.

City was subdued for long periods in the opening period, but the team had the attacking prowess to unlock even the toughest of rearguards. Kolarov was proving an unlikely danger and almost grabbed his second when McClean deflected a Tevez pass into the Serb’s path, but he shot straight at Simon Mignolet.

In-form forward Steven Fletcher had been well marshaled by the City defense, but the Scot, who had scored all Sunderland’s five goals this season, showed his capabilities just after the break with a volley from a tight angle that Richards did well to block.

In the second half, City cranked up the pressure and the subdued Balotelli was just inches away from connecting with a Kolarov cross. It was the Italian’s last action before being replaced by Aguero. It proved to be an inspired switch as within four minutes, City had doubled its lead as the Argentine doubled the lead.

City was now dangerous every time it crossed the halfway line. There is more cut and thrust with Tevez and Aguero in partnership, and the duo combined for Tevez to shoot just narrowly wide.

Tevez then pounced on a loose ball on the edge of the box and after Mignolet had been coaxed to close him down, the Argentine picked out Silva who sent a deft chip that struck the bar.

The home side wrapped up the points in injury time when James Milner's vicious free kick from a tight angle dipped and deceived Mignolet in the Black Cats goal.

West Ham 1-3 Arsenal: Giroud, Walcott & Cazorla strikes move Gunners up to fifth

    216666hp2.jpg

Arsenal moved up to fifth in the Premier League as they came from a goal behind to beat West Ham 3-1 thanks to goals from Olivier Giroud, Theo Walcott and a fine strike from Santi Cazorla.

Mohamed Diame opened the scoring against the run of play, brilliantly beating Aaron Ramsey and curling into the top corner before Giroud displayed his predatory instincts by stabbing home Lukas Podolski's low cross.

The Frenchman turned provider as he threaded Walcott in on goal for the 23-year-old to put the Gunners ahead, before Cazorla thundered a 20-yard effort in to seal all three points.

Arsene Wenger shuffled his pack following Wednesday night's 3-1 win over Olympiakos, recalling Giroud and Aaron Ramsey as well as bringing Per Mertesacker in to help counter the threat of Andy Carroll, who was given a start ahead of Carlton Cole by Sam Allardyce.

Giroud, who was still chasing his first Premier League goal, tested Jussi Jaaskelainen at his near post in the second minute and this early chance fostered a dominant opening 20 minutes for Wenger's team.

However, on a rare break forward for the hosts, George McCartney advanced from left-back and rolled a ball into Diame's feet.

The powerful Senegalese midfielder sized up Ramsey before knocking the ball past him as the Welshman pressed too tightly. From almost the byline and inside the box, Diame's next touch was of the highest quality as he bent a rising shot past Vito Mannone and into the top corner.

Diame though, had picked up a booking for celebrating with the home support, and was very fortunate not to receive his marching orders on the 28th minute as he clattered into Mikel Arteta in midfield.

The 25-year-old did survive a dismissal but he was the villain as he tried to pluck a ball out from the sky on the halfway line. Arteta pounced and Giroud swept the ball wide to Podolski who took a touch before delivering a splendid low cross into the six-yard box for the waiting Frenchman to poke home.

The half-time break helped West Ham recuperate their lost momentum and although Arsenal remained in control of possession, the Hammers appeared more direct and threatening. Matt Jarvis half-volleyed over the bar before Carroll leapt above Mannone but could only nod wide of an empty goal when he should have scored.

The game was pockmarked by injuries to Ricardo Vaz Te, Guy Demel and Mertesacker and it was a wonder that Mannone came away unscathed after several bruising collisions. But he will be pleased to have witnessed the closing stages as Arsenal turned the screw.

First, Giroud sent substitute Walcott in on goal, leaving the England international the space to calmly slot low past Jaaskelainen with 13 minutes remaining. As the Hammers pressed for an equaliser, Walcott stole possession and handed the ball to Cazorla, who had described this game as "fundamental" to the club's title chances, and he composed himself before rifling an unstoppable 20-yard shot into the top corner.

With that, Wenger's team had averted a potential banana skin and sealed a valuable three points in an impressive comeback.

Mascherano: There are too many Clasicos

    160942hp2.jpg

On the eve of the 14th Clasico between Real Madrid and Barcelona in two years, Blaugrana midfielder Javier Mascherano has complained of the increased workload and pressure that comes with the clash between the arch-rivals.

The two teams played each other four times in the spring of 2011, twice in the Champions League, once in the league and faced each other in the Copa del Rey final.

Mascherano shared that he does not remember those clashes fondly as he believes they put too much strain on the players.

"Those four Clasicos will never be forgotten. It was terrible for what happened. We played too many times,” Mascherano told El Periodico.

The Argentine believes that the two teams know each other so well now that it is difficult to spot a new weakness or spring a surprise for the opposition.

"The more familiar you are, the worse it is - it is harder to find the weaknesses. It will be hard on Sunday."

The former Liverpool player also spoke of his transition from a midfielder to a center half and stressed how difficult it is to break into Barcelona's midfield.

"They were the best club in the world having won everything. I came here and finished my first season playing a Champions League final at Wembley against Manchester United. At center back!

"I am not Sergio Busquets, to play in the midfield for Barcelona is almost impossible. You need an almost perfect sense of positioning. For some games I can play there, but I always want to play."

Ashley Cole to face Chelsea punishment for FA tweet, reveals Di Matteo

    214544hp2.jpg

Roberto Di Matteo has confirmed Chelsea will take disciplinary action against Ashley Cole for his foul-mouthed Twitter rant at the Football Association on Friday.

The 31-year-old reacted angrily to the release of the report into the John Terry racism scandal and launched a vulgar tirade of abuse towards English football's governing body also implying they called him a liar following his evidence in the case.

Cole wrote on his Twitter account: "Hahahahaa, well done #fa I lied did I, #BUNCHOFT****." He later deleted the comment.

Following the Blues' 4-1 win over Norwich, Di Matteo revealed that the left back will face punishment for his outspoken comments and revealed he has no issue with players using social media despite Cole's actions.

He told reporters: "We have a social media policy and there will be disciplinary action against Ashley Cole for his tweet yesterday.

"I'm not against social media. It's the world we live in. When it's used sensibly it's not a problem.”

Cole later apologized for his rant against the FA claiming he was upset at the time and reacted without thinking due to his anger at the incident.

He said: "I was really upset and tweeted my feelings in the heat of the moment. I apologize unreservedly for my comment about the FA."

Despite his tirade Cole was assured of his place in the England squad for this month's World Cup qualifiers against San Marino and Poland after having talks with boss Roy Hodgson.

Landon Donovan backs Madrid in Clasico

    209401hp2.jpg

LA Galaxy star Landon Donovan is expecting this weekend's El Clasico to be a close game but has backed Real Madrid to claim the three points in the end.

The 30-year-old stated that the clash between football's two superpowers will have the attention of every fan in the world and assured the public that the spectacle will be worth it.

“For all of us football fans it’s one of the games we most look forward to watching every year or many times a year. This will be no different and it’s going to be exciting," Donovan said in an interview with Marca.

When the former Everton player was pressed to predict the result he admitted that it will be a close game but tipped Madrid to have the edge.

"It’s hard to decide who’s going to win a game like this. I just hope it’s exciting and I hope [there are] lots of goals," he said. "I’ll say Madrid because they need to win, they are struggling."

Ancelotti denies Paris Saint-Germain interest in Ronaldo

    214693hp2.jpg

Carlo Ancelotti has stressed that Paris Saint-Germain is not interested in signing Real Madrid's Cristiano Ronaldo.

The Italian coach recently praised the Portuguese ace and admitted he could see him playing well alongside PSG's star striker, Zlatan Ibrahimovic.

However, the former AC Milan and Chelsea boss has slammed reports suggesting Ronaldo might soon be leaving the Santiago Bernabeu for the cash-rich Ligue 1 club.

"I can't confirm what has been said in newspapers today," Ancelotti told reporters on Saturday afternoon. "Do I want him to come to Paris? No."

PSG has enjoyed an unbeaten start to its league season but suffered a setback in the Champions League when it lost to Porto in midweek.

Real Madrid, on the other hand, has won both its European clashes but is struggling in La Liga, lagging eight points behind Barcelona after just six games.

Mourinho: I have complete faith in my team

    215850hp2.jpg

Jose Mourinho is confident that Real Madrid has what it takes to record a positive result in Sunday's Primera Division match against Barcelona at Camp Nou.

The reigning champions have been in unimpressive form in La Liga in the opening weeks of the 2012-13 campaign, but Mourinho believes they are on the right path again.

"I have confidence in my players, I always do. When you are working well, you are always going to be more confident. I have complete faith in the team," Mourinho stated at a press conference.

He added, "Our recent improvement is down to the players. They have realized that it was crucial to change a few things. We always have to be focused. Now we've changed, things are easier once more.

"I am mainly concerned about putting in a good performance. We have made significant improvement and want to reach the same level again that helped us win the title."

The flamboyant coach also had his say on the situation of Mesut Ozil, and was coy on whether the Germany international will feature from the start against Barcelona.

"We should not make too much of it when a player starts from the bench. We have a lot of players and they can't all play," Mourinho said. "I can't say yet who will play against Barcelona out of Ozil, [Luka] Modric and Kaka."

Ferguson: I will continue to rotate my keepers at Manchester United

    212440hp2.jpg

Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson says he has not settled on a first choice goalkeeper and will continue to rotate David de Gea and Anders Lindegaard for the time being.

The 70-year-old praised De Gea - who has not played a Premier League game since conceding twice against Fulham in the second match of the campaign - following United's midweek win away to Cluj in the Champions League after a string of late saves preserved a 2-1 win.

Anders Lindegaard, 28, started the last four league matches in his place for Sir Alex, but it is unclear whether the Danish stopper will remain in goal for Sunday's trip to Newcastle.

"He [De Gea] was excellent, he is an outstanding goalkeeper, the young lad, he is getting better all the time." Ferguson told the Daily Mail. "I don't know whether I should play him on Sunday or not but the way we have been doing it in the last few weeks has worked quite well for us."

He added, "Everybody wants to play, goalkeepers are no different, but the way I look at it at the moment is getting the two of them experience will help me in the long term."

The Old Trafford boss says he is not too concerned at the lack of a genuine No.1 as he feels both players have plenty of time left to establish themselves.

"Peter Schmeichel was 27 when he joined us. Everyone was talking about a young goalkeeper joining us but he was 27, and he gave us eight great years," Ferguson said.

The Red Devils coach brought up the fact that most shot-swatters play much longer than average soccer players.

"Goalkeepers can play until their late 30s quite easily, look at Brad Friedel for instance, and Peter Shilton played in the 1990 World Cup and I think he was 40," he said.

"Goalkeepers can last longer. If they look after themselves even better, but as long as they keep their agility and their speed they can play to a good age."

Adam Johnson: 'If I was young, I wouldn't go to Manchester City'

    212863hp2.jpg

Sunderland midfielder Adam Johnson has warned young players against a move to Premier League champions Manchester City.

The 25-year-old moved to Etihad Stadium from Middlesbrough for 7 million pounds in 2010, but never managed to hold down a first team spot under Roberto Mancini.

The England international has now advised players that are in a similar position to not make the same mistake by joining the champions.

“Now, if I was a young lad, I wouldn’t go to City,” he told The Mirror. “It is excellent when a club like City come for you. Hard to turn down. But you don’t actually play for the champions - you’re a squad member, which is totally different."

He added, "It’s not that you’re not good enough, it’s just that the likes of Yaya Toure are going to play ahead of you, no matter what you do.”

Johnson does not envy Mancini's job but says it is down to him to determine the size of his squad, revealing his belief that there are simply too many players at the club, all desperate for first team football.

“I think it would only be a matter of time before senior players become unhappy,” he revealed. “You can probably have too many world class players at once - everyone wants to play and they’re not happy to be squad players.

He continued to explain being critical of Mancini's transfer policy: “You’re going to have trouble picking a team, and leaving people in the stands. I was one of them last season."He [Mancini] wanted that many players in the squad. He’s got to deal with it, hasn’t he?"
Johnson is now a Sunderland player after his switch this summer and says he has quickly rediscovered what it feels like to be loved under Martin O'Neill.

“I was forgotten about as a player. I want to get playing again and have people talk about me again for being a good player," Johnson said. “Martin O’Neill makes you know he wants you, and he makes you feel 10 feet tall. If that’s how a player feels, that’s when you play your best football.”

    PSG's Jallet: Let's hand Marseille a slapping

Paris Saint-Germain fullback Christophe Jallet has laid down the gauntlet for his teammates ahead of their crunch encounter against Ligue 1 leader Olympique de Marseille in le Classique, labeling it a clash that could decide the title.

Carlo Ancelotti's men comprehensively lost 3-0 at Stade Velodrome last November, a result the defender is particularly eager to level against Elie Baup's men on Sunday.

"[September's 2-1 victory over] Lille proved to be a turning point for us," the 28-year-old said at a press conference. "Marseille have been in stable form, as well as possessing a physical advantage, but let's hand them a slapping. This match will prove to see how well we can do in the league, and indeed if we can beat anyone."

Jallet is anticipated to start over summer purchase Gregory van der Wiel at the back. Mamadou Sakho is suspended for the key clash.

Vilanova: It does not matter where Messi plays

Barcelona coach Tito Vilanova has played down any significance as to how talisman Lionel Messi is deployed during Sunday's Clasico against Real Madrid.

The Argentine has appeared in a number of positions for the Blaugrana, but his trainer has declared how the striker turns out as irrelevant, arguing the defending Spanish champion would already have adapted to such tactical variations via past encounters.

"It does not matter where [Lionel] Messi plays," explained Vilanova to assembled reporters at a press conference. "Madrid will know by now how we play."

The tactician then went on to explain why no one side is favored to win on Sunday.

"Barcelona-Real Madrid never has clear favorites, regardless of where the teams each lie in the table. We've not beaten them all the time by a 5-0 scoreline. They have a very good squad, costing many millions more than ours," said Vilanova. "All I'm focused on is claiming a seventh-consecutive victory, something no one else has achieved before."

Previous instances between the two Spanish heavyweights have often proven colorful encounters signified by political differences, something former Barcelona president Joan Laporta explained to Goal.com – how the Catalan people were entitled to independence from Spain.

But Vilanova, who himself was involved in a high-profile physical altercation with counterpart Jose Mourinho in the past, believes this game could prove a turning point, where the spectacle on the pitch remains the focus of audiences.

"Tomorrow, you will only see a soccer game, nothing more. While there is a rivalry, this is related to sports, and has nothing to do with politics.

"I've seen what has been broadcast on television [regarding the infamous eye-poke by Mourinho], but I can say I am comfortable with my behavior. I can say nothing more in that regard."

The 43-year-old has lost captain Carles Puyol for two months, after the veteran dislocated his elbow in the Champions League encounter against Benfica, although the defense could be buoyed by the return of Gerard Pique.

"We will only judge how well Pique's muscles respond tomorrow, before the game. He will make an effort to be ready. Any team would otherwise feel the absence of players of Puyol's and Pique's caliber," said Vilanova.

The Primera Division front-runner enters the match eight points clear of the defending Spanish champion, after an impressive start to the season that has seen Pep Guardiola's successor achieve an unprecedented perfect record in the club's opening fixtures.

Arsenal striker Giroud 'relieved' to score first Premier League goal

Olivier Giroud has revealed his relief at netting his first Premier League goal for Arsenal against West Ham in a 3-1 win for the Gunners.

The Frenchman netted in the 41st minute to cancel out Mohamed Diame's opener, and went on to assist Theo Walcott's goal, Arsenal's second, with a fine through ball before Santi Cazorla added a late third.

"I'm so happy tonight to score my first goal and to assist my friend Theo. I'm very happy, I feel relieved now and I hope so many goals come after," Giroud told ESPN. "Everyone talked to me about this goal, everyone said: 'There's a goal coming soon, don't worry, we trust you,' and I keep confident, and I keep going, concentrate on the work in training and the game. So I keep confident."

Walcott hailed the Gunners' resolute defensive display, and hopes to have proven his worth to Arsene Wenger after starting most of the season on the Gunners' bench.

"It's always going to be a tough battle here," the England man added. "We haven't been here for a couple of years now. West Ham are always strong under Sam [Allardyce], and we showed good qualities, not just going forward, but defensively we were very strong.

"Maybe [we were] quite nervy in the first 10-15 minutes but the second half was much stronger. The true Arsenal, definitely.

"You've got to be patient in the game at times. I've always said I wanted to play, and that's the best way to answer your critics and hopefully now I can try and get a nice run in the team. The team is looking very strong and I'll be happy to be part of it."

The Gunners climbed up to fifth after their win at Upton Park, and the winger believes they have enough quality to sustain their push towards the top of the Premier League this term.

"We just [take it] step by step, every game as it comes, but we know where we want to be this season. We want to be hopefully right up there come the end of the season," Walcott said. "We've got some great players like I said before that have come in and I think the way we came back today, I think we can definitely have a good push now."

Santi Cazorla once again played a starring role for Arsene Wenger's side, sealing the game with a superb third goal, that dipped and swerved past Jussi Jaaskelainen and into the corner.

"You can see he's come to the Premier League and he's taken it by storm," Walcott said of the Spain international. "He's an absolutely fantastic player to play with in training every day - the same as these guys who've just come in as well - but Santi is the one that has stood out definitely, and today he's our conductor.

"He just takes everything, and his goal was absolutely fantastic. I don't even know what footed he is, to be honest."

Di Matteo hails Chelsea's professionalism after Norwich rout

Roberto Di Matteo paid tribute to the professionalism of his Chelsea side after it ended a week of bad headlines with a comfortable win over Norwich to remain top of the Premier League.

Goals from Fernando Torres, Frank Lampard, Eden Hazard and Branislav Ivanovic gave the Blues their sixth win in seven games in all competitions to keep them four points clear at the head of the table.

Before the match there were questions over whether the release of the written judgment relating to John Terry's FA punishment for using racist language towards QPR defender Anton Ferdinand and the offensive tweet Ashley Cole directed at the governing body had affected the team's focus. But Di Matteo believes the emphatic performance of his men has put any such concerns to rest.

"I think the results are telling us that we are able to blank things out, that we can focus on our aim and target, which is winning football matches," he told reporters. "It shows how professional the group is.

"We concentrate on our strength and try to win games with the players we have and the footballing philosophy we are aiming to play, and at the moment the team is in healthy form. We are creating lots of chances, scoring lots of goals and with different scorers - we don't just rely on one player. It's a team that is in good shape.

"I've always said that I have a good squad, and we're utilizing it. You've not seen much of the likes of Azpilicueta or Romeu who will be given more time after the international break. We've also got Marko Marin coming back into the team, and Daniel Sturridge has been injured. I think we've got options, and it's important we have those, because so far we've been quite lucky with injuries."

Di Matteo also expressed his surprise that Juan Mata, who produced another stellar display and now has four goals and five assists in his last five matches, was omitted from Vicente Del Bosque's Spain squad for their forthcoming World Cup qualifiers.

"I'm surprised, and I'm very happy that he stays with me!" the Blues boss joked. "But I feel for him, because he's in great form. I don't know the reasons why, but we are happy he is going to be with us."

West Ham 1-3 Arsenal: Giroud, Walcott & Cazorla strikes move Gunners up to fifth
