Mainz 0-3 Bayern Munich: Mandzukic double inspires comfortable victory

    251802hp2.jpg

Bayern Munich was helped by an impressive double strike from Mario Mandzukic as it opened up a 14-point lead at the top of the Bundesliga, disposing of Mainz in a convincing 3-0 victory away from home.

The hosts matched the league leaders throughout the first half, but fell away alarmingly after Thomas Muller put his side in the clear; and the Croatian striker further twisted the knife as he added two more after the interval.

Bayern enjoyed clear control of possession in the first 45, but struggled to translate that superiority into chances in the final third. Mainz defended enthusiastically and pulled no punches, resulting in two bookings before the interval as the tackles flew in across the pitch.

The hosts may have been on the back foot, but they did pose a significant danger on the counter. Shawn Parker had a handful of opportunities as he unsettled the Bayern defense, failing to hit the target after wriggling clear in the area to the relief of the travelling support.

An underwhelming fixture suddenly burst into life in the final minutes of the half. Javier Martinez enjoyed one of die Roten's first clear chances of the match when he connected with Toni Kroos' corner, but the Spaniard's header was stopped by Christian Wetklo and the keeper reacted well to claim the rebound with the midfielder closing in on goal. Despite the increase in pressure, however, it was still a surprise when Bayern snatched the lead.

In a rare moment of inattention from the Mainz defense, Kroos' well-weighted through-ball found a gap and swung into the path of the advancing Thomas Muller. The Germany international barely broke stride as he rounded Wetklo out wide, before delicately sliding the ball into the empty net from a rapidly decreasing angle.

The home team's challenge only became more fierce after the break, when a clinical Bayern doubled the advantage. David Alaba was the architect of the second, smashing a hole down the left with a brilliant run, and Mario Mandzukic was left with the easiest of finishes to convert the full back's low cross and leave his side in a dominant position.

Mainz was shambolic following Bayern's double strike, and the only question remaining appeared to be how many the Bundesliga leaders would add to their tally before the end of the match. Mandzukic popped up once again to make it three, heading past the despairing Wetklo after connecting with Phillipp Lahm's cross to the far post.

The rest of the match was all too easy for the Bavarians, who played the ball around at will against a demoralized opposition.

The win means Bayern temporarily opens up a 14-point lead over Bayer Leverkusen, in second place. Its challenger will hope to close the gap on Sunday, when it faces current champion Borussia Dortmund at home.

QPR 0-0 Norwich: Rangers still rooted to the bottom after Taarabt penalty miss

    251760hp2.jpg

LONDON -- QPR is still rooted to the bottom of the Premier League table after Adel Taarabt's penalty miss in the 0-0 draw against Norwich.

The Moroccan's spot-kick was saved by Mark Bunn after the goalkeeper had tripped Jamie Mackie in the area during the second half.

Despite good efforts from both teams, heroics from the keepers kept the scores level and Harry Redknapp's side bottom of the table.

Redknapp named two deadline-day signings in the starting line-up, with Christopher Samba coming straight into the center of defense, while Andros Townsend was thrown in at the deep end on the wing.

Norwich's own deadline day recruit Luciano Becchio started his Canaries career on the bench, with Hughton opting for an unchanged lineup to the side that drew against Tottenham at Carrow Road on Wednesday.

Both sides had early chances, with Taarabt screwing a shot wide after some good footwork, while Wes Hoolahan blazed over from right in front of goal, though he was flagged for offside.

Taarabt came close after 10 minutes following more typically sublime footwork, but dragged his shot just wide of Bunn's right-hand post, before playing in Mackie for a shot across the face of goal after 15 minutes.

The rest of the first half was fairly low on quality in the final third, with a succession of moves failing for both sides and neither goalkeeper tested beyond simple catches and claims.

The hosts had a few free kicks from distance that were whipped in by Taarabt, but they were well dealt with by the Norwich back-line before referee Jonathan Moss blew for half-time.

The second half burst into life after good work from the away side, with Snodgrass' cross flicked on towards goal by Hoolahan, only for Julio Cesar to spring to his right to stop it.

Then QPR and Taarabt wasted their best chance of the match. Mackie was sent through, and as he got to the ball was tripped in the area by Bunn. Moss pointed to the spot, awarding a booking to the goalkeeper in the process.

Taarabt looked calm, stepped up and hit a decent effort away to Bunn's left, but the keeper got down well to make a great stop.

Despite late pressure from both teams, including another couple of fine stops from Cesar, firstly from Howson and then from Snodgrass, neither team was able to break the deadlock.

Benitez not fearing Chelsea sack after late Newcastle defeat

    250038hp2.jpg

Chelsea manager Rafa Benitez has insisted his job is not in jeopardy despite his side slipping to a 3-2 defeat to Newcastle on Saturday afternoon.

Moussa Sissoko capped an incredible home debut for the hosts with a 90th-minute winner, but Benitez felt his side should have been given a penalty when Fabricio Coloccini caught Demba Ba in the face with his boot, breaking the former Toon man's nose.

When asked about his Stamford Bridge future, Benitez told reporters: "If the players show the character that they showed in the second half, it means something is right.

"If we cannot control these games, it is something we have to improve.

"With some players: David Luiz, [Eden] Hazard, [John] Obi Mikel and Victor Moses coming back that gives us more options and maybe we can have fresh legs on the pitch.

"When we are in form and doing well, we can beat anyone. We are doing a good job in terms of what you can see on the pitch so we're doing well. The team has great team spirit and I'm confident that the team will finish in the top three."

The Spanish boss expressed his frustration at the loss of his new striker, and referee Howard Webb's decision to not award a penalty when he was caught in the face with a Coloccini boot.

"We have to improve, but we couldn't change the situation of Demba Ba.

"It was a penalty and a red card for me. In the middle of the park it's just carry on, go back, free kick. In the penalty area it's carry on, go back, penalty and red card.

"It changed the game, we lost a player to a broken nose. It's something to consider. In other circumstances, everyone would be talking about this."

    Congratulations Manchester United!!!

:love:Fulham 0-1 Manchester United: Rooney helps open up 10-point gap at the top

    waynerooneyscoresvffcshotview20130202_576x324.jpg

Wayne Rooney struck late on as Manchester United overcame a strong Fulham performance and a floodlight failure with a 1-0 win, which leaves Sir Alex Ferguson's side 10 points clear of Premier League champion Manchester City.

Both sides had great chances throughout but the England striker showed nerves of steel to calmly finish inside the box after a mistake from Philippe Senderos let him in on 79 minutes.

Hugo Rodallega broke the offside trap with ease after four minutes, but his cut-back from Ashkan Dejagah was well blocked in the center.

United will scarcely believe it didn't take the lead in the seventh minute. A corner came in which was bundled towards the net with only Schwarzer's desperate dive preventing a certain goal. Evra hit the bar seconds later with the goal gaping, then saw another shot expertly saved by the keeper.

It was David de Gea's turn to excel after 11 minutes, superbly tipping over a wonderful John Arne Riise volley from 30 yards.

Riise shaped to shoot again three minutes later but opted to turn and feed Bryan Ruiz, who saw his cute volley tupped onto the post

United then hit the post with the ball deflecting high from a corner on to Schwarzer's bar, with Antonio Valencia screwing the follow-up wide.

There were no chances until the 32nd minute, when United hit the woodwork for a third time with Rooney curling an effort onto Schwarzer's left-hand post from 20 yards.

The floodlights then went out with five minutes of the half to play to the delight of the 25,670 fans, and while the players came off, power was restored within five minutes. Play resumed with a corner, with Schwarzer collecting a Van Persie drive at the second attempt.

Both teams were a little more cautious from the restart after each manager presumably told their sides in no uncertain terms to tighten up at the back.

Chances were few and far between but Chris Baird heated things up with a stinging drive on the hour that De Gea did well to smother.

Van Persie broke the offside trap a minute later and teed up Nani on the byline, whose eight-yard shot was well blocked by Baird, while De Gea was perhaps fortunate his parried save was not turned in by Ruiz with 20 minutes remaining.

United had half-chances while Jonny Evans did well to head away from underneath his own crossbar as the pressure rose, while Rafael prevented a certain goal by heading away from a corner on his own goal-line, but United struck the decisive blow.

Senderos tried to block Van Persie's run but only succeeded in letting Rooney run onto a long ball, and the striker made no mistake by curling the ball around Hughes and into Schwarzer's net.

Van Persie cleared another header off the line and Chicharito missed a one-on-one in a brilliant ending, but United saw out the game.

Granada 1-0 Real Madrid: Ronaldo own goal gifts Andalusians three precious points

    251943hp2.jpg

Cristiano Ronaldo sensationally scored in his own net as Real Madrid slumped to a shock 1-0 defeat away to Granada on Saturday night.

In trying to head clear a corner from Nolito, the Portugal international inadvertently deflected the ball past a stunned Diego Lopez. The reigning Liga champion, led by a determined Ronaldo, tried desperately to rally, but substitute Karim Benzema squandered a gilt-edged opportunity to snatch a point in the dying seconds and the hosts held on to claim a win which lifted them out of the bottom three.

Los Blancos had scored nine unanswered goals in their two previous Liga outings, against Valencia and Getafe, and another landslide victory was envisaged against a side languishing in the relegation zone and led by a new coach in Lucas Alcarez, who had had just two full days to prepare his side for the visit of the champion.

However, Madrid looked sluggish right from the off, perhaps still feeling the effects of a draining Copa del Rey semifinal first-leg clash with Barcelona in midweek. Indeed, it did not fashion a chance worth of mention before falling behind in the most surprising of circumstances midway through the first half, Ronaldo heading a corner from Nolito past his own goalkeeper.

Desperate to make amends for the first own goal of his professional career, the Portuguese twice tried his luck from distance with 30-yard free kicks, but on both occasions, he was unable to test Tono in the Granada goal.

Yet those speculative long-range efforts were the best that Madrid could muster during an opening 45 minutes in which neither side managed to register a legitimate shot on target.

After such a tepid first-half display, Jose Mourinho unsurprisingly elected to make a couple of substitutions during the interval, sending on Benzema and Jose Callejon in place of Gonzalo Higuain and Sami Khedira.

The changes did not have any great impact, though, because while Madrid dominated possession, it continued to struggle to break down a Granada defence that was being wonderfully well marshaled by Diego Mainz.

Ronaldo did call Tono into action with a low drive from just outside the area that goalkeeper parried away for a corner, and repeated the feat with 19 minutes to go - but again to no avail.

Madrid really should have snatched a share of the spoils late on after Tono could only parry Callejon's shot into the path of Benzema. However, the Frenchman inexplicably fired wide from less than five yards out, even though there was only one Granada defender protecting the goal.

A late equalizer would have been desperately harsh on the hosts, though, who were full value for a shock victory which significantly boosted their bid to beat the drop, while at the same tame severely damaging Madrid’s hopes of overhauling city rival Atletico Madrid in second place.

Wenger delighted with Monreal's Arsenal debut

    251789hp2.jpg

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger expressed his delight with the performance of debutant Nacho Monreal after the Gunners' 1-0 win over Stoke at the Emirates Stadium.

The north London club had to wait until the 78th minute to open the scoring, but Wenger was impressed with the Spaniard’s seamless transition - as well as the resilience of Theo Walcott - in the face of a very physical Potters side.

"There’s no better culture shock than Stoke when you come from Spain, because of course they have a very physical game, and I think [Monreal] dealt well with it," the French manager said after the game. "The satisfaction is that Monreal had a good start for a player who just arrived yesterday and is in the team today. He had no time to think about it, but overall I felt he got stronger and stronger during the game."

Walcott had to receive treatment several times in the match, and though Wenger did not feel Stoke were overly aggressive, he was disappointed with the lack of protection given to the 23-year-old.

"I feel overall Theo Walcott got good treatment today," Wenger said dryly. "But I am very happy because the way he responded to it was with full commitment and desire to impose himself and that’s where you see today that Walcott has become a different player recently and he’s shown that today."

The Arsenal boss also brushed off any doubts over the legitimacy of his side’s goal, with Lukas Podolski’s deflected free kick initially being ruled out before referee Chris Foy overruled his assistant.

"I haven’t seen it from the bench what happened," Wenger added. "I thought the linesmen had given offside, I couldn’t see anything else, or maybe somebody from us had handled the ball, that’s all I could think.

"But in fact I have heard that Walcott was offside but he was not interfering with the game, then it’s a normal goal."

Pardew ecstatic with match-winner Sissoko after thrilling Chelsea win

    251845hp2.jpg

Alan Pardew was delighted with Moussa Sissoko after the France international scored twice on his Newcastle home debut to seal a 3-2 win over Chelsea.

The Blues responded to Jonas Gutierrez's header with efforts from Frank Lampard and Juan Mata but Sissoko struck twice, including the winner in the 90th minute, to seal a stunning victory for the Magpies.

"The whole team was magnificent," Pardew told reporters. "But Sissoko - it would be silly to ignore the fact that he announced his presence in the game, not just with his technical ability but with his power. "It's something that has been sadly missing from the team and I don't really need to say too much his performance spoke for itself.

"As well as Sissoko today, [Yohan] Cabaye too. It was nice to have our intelligence back in the team, when to go long, when to go small, when to keep the ball, when to go at the opposition. I actually thought he was outstanding today.

"They [the fans] know a good player when they see one and he didn't just give us the goals today, he gave us more than that.

"I remember seeing him at Toulouse about 14-16 months ago. There's only two players I've seen that I was desperate to get here. One was Cabaye and one was Sissoko and we've managed to do that, fantastic players that they are."

Sissoko's winner capped an enthralling afternoon on Tyneside and Pardew believes that the tie was the best clash he has seen this term.

He added: "It was undoubtedly the game of the season, I don't think we're going to better that between now and the end. It was a fabulous game. When you play the top sides it's important to knock them off their stride and show no fear and put them under pressure.

"We did that really well first half, I was really, really pleased with that performance, we got a goal when perhaps we should have scored earlier through Papiss [Cisse] but we got the goal.

"Chelsea came out and showed why they've got fabulous players, we really struggled there for 10-15 minutes and [they scored] two unbelievable goals.

"Usually when you get goals like that, it knocks the stuffing out of a team and they fold and you go on to win, but we wouldn't let that happen, we had an intelligence about us today, we stayed in the game and got a break away and got back in the game."

Demba Ba had an unsuccessful return to Tyneside, being forced off in the first half with a broken nose after a challenge with Fabricio Coloccini, but Pardew insists he has not dwelt on his former player’s departure.

"Teams do move on," he explained. "This team's had Andy Cole and Alan Shearer, blimey it's difficult to move on from players of that sort of quality.

"Demba came and did a great job for us but he's moved on and new stars emerge."
