AC Milan 2-1 Udinese: Balotelli debut double seals controversial victory

    252229hp2.jpg

Mario Balotelli scored twice on his debut to edge AC Milan to a 2-1 victory over Udinese at San Siro in Saturday's Serie A encounter.

All eyes were set firmly on the 20 million pound signing from Manchester City, who was thrust into the starting lineup at the last possible moment. He broke the deadlock with a close range volley to mark a dominant first half for the Rossoneri.

But Udinese, toothless during the opening period, came out with renewed vigor after the interval, and pounced on a shoddy defensive sequence to claw its way back into the game through Giampiero Pinzi early in the second half.

The match seemed destined to end in a draw, but a controversial late penalty call allowed Balotelli to send Milan to all three points with the last kick of the game from 12 yards out, and take the club level with city rival Inter in fourth place.

The feel-good factor surrounding Balotelli’s arrival had San Siro rocking long before kickoff, and perhaps inevitably, matters were whipped into a real frenzy with the news that a late injury to Giampaolo Pazzini forced the big money signing into the starting XI.

Just 35 seconds into his Milan debut Balotelli came within inches of making the most incredible of starts after sending a shot from the edge of the area agonizingly wide of the far post, with half the fans already celebrating a goal.

The 22-year-old was certainly lively early on, and with 12 minutes gone, threatened in attack again when he slid in M’baye Niang 10 yards out, but his shot was straight at Daniele Padelli.Balotelli’s moment would arrive with 25 minutes on the clock. Stephen El Shaarawy did well to squeeze in a cross from the byline, and a deflection took it right into the path of the striker, who volleyed precisely into the bottom corner.

It was a one-man spectacle at San Siro throughout the first half and shortly before the half hour mark Balotelli nearly struck again, this time with a sweetly-hit effort from 20 yards out that brought the very best out of Padelli.

Udinese was fortunate to still be in the game at halftime, but emerged from the interval with a renewed enthusiasm. A glorious ball from Andrea Lazzari was badly skewed over by Antonio Di Natale from close range, and with 55 minutes gone, the Udinese would find the equalizer.

Milan was caught napping after losing the ball in its own half, and Muriel, with acres of space ahead of him, slid in Pinzi who bundled his finish past Marco Amelia and into the back of the net.The Rossoneri had lost some of their edge, and Udinese was well and truly back into game, making matters finely poised as the match moved into the closing stages.

Niang smashed a thunderous effort off the crossbar and Balotelli forced another admirable save from Padelli, but just when the draw looked a foregone conclusion an incomprehensible penalty call was made on a legitimate tackle by Thomas Heurtaux on El Shaarawy. Balotelli was allowed to win the game from the spot in unforgettable, but controversial circumstances.

Balotelli reveals joy at goalscoring AC Milan debut

    252242hp2.jpg

Mario Balotelli has revealed his delight at scoring both goals in his debut for AC Milan, in which the side beat Udinese 2-1 on Sunday night.

The Italy forward was due to start the game on the bench, but Giampaolo Pazzini picked up an injury in training, which meant the 22 million euro January signing started the game on the pitch.

He scored after 25 minutes to put the Rossoneri ahead, but a goal from Giampiero Pinzi looked to have settled the game as a draw. However, a late - and very controversial - penalty was awarded and the striker calmly put away the spot kick to secure a stoppage-time victory.Balotelli told reporters after the game: "I was supposed to be on the bench and Pazzo [Pazzini] was meant to play but he had a problem. I played from the start and it went well."

The former Inter starlet admitted that his fitness needs a lot of work, however, but exclaimed his joy despite his post-match exhaustion."I'm happy even if the game was difficult," Balotelli added. "I’m strong but my legs are still heavy. I haven't played many games and I have to train a lot."

The win leaves the Rossoneri level on points with archrivals Inter, and fourth in Serie A.

Prandelli recalls Marchetti to Italy squad to face Netherlands

    229549hp2.jpg

Italy head coach Cesare Prandelli has named his squad to face Netherlands, and the recall of Federico Marchetti is among the most notable inclusions.

The Lazio goalkeeper has not been involved in the Azzurri setup since 2010, but has been in fine form this season which has earned himself a spot in the team.

There are six Juventus players named by Prandelli, while AC Milan has five stars involved in the squad, including new signing Mario Balotelli.

Only three Italians who play outside the country have been chosen for the team to face the Dutch: Newcastle United fullback Davide Santon and Paris Saint-Germain pair Salvatore Sirigu and Marco Verratti.

The likes of Giorgio Chiellini, Christian Maggio and Federico Balzaretti have missed out on the squad due to injury.

Manchester City boss Mancini blasts referee after Liverpool draw

    252192hp2.jpg

Roberto Mancini criticized referee Anthony Taylor after Manchester City dropped two points at home to Liverpool, leaving the club nine points off Manchester United at the top of the Premier League.

Liverpool was the better side for most of the match and looked to have sealed the points when Steven Gerrard fired home a long-range effort in the second half, but a remarkable finish from Sergio Aguero capitalized on some poor goalkeeping from Jose Reina to rescue a point.

The 48-year-old was annoyed by the referee's failure to see a foul on Edin Dzeko in the build-up to Daniel Sturridge's goal which leveled the scores at 1-1, but accepted it was a fair result.

"Before their first goal there was a big fault," he told Sky Sports. "If it happened against us it would be a red card but instead the referee didn't see anything. But in the end I feel that was the right result."

Mancini doesn't feel Liverpool was obliged to put the ball out as Dzeko lay injured and insists the responsibility to stop the game lay solely with the officials.

"Probably [Liverpool should have put the ball out] because after this foul there was 15 seconds, but no this can happen. I think it was a foul and probably a yellow card, the rules are the same for everyone," he went on. "The referee was perfect for 10 minutes, all the fouls for Liverpool, every time flag, flag, flag, but he didn't see this."

Mancini admitted it was a damaging draw, however, the City boss refused to rule out his side's chances in the title race altogether.

"No, [it's not over]," he added. "Thirteen games to the end is long. Seven or nine points don't change, I think we can recover it."

Bayer Leverkusen 2-3 Borussia Dortmund: Lewandowski settles thrilling contest

    252183hp2.jpg

Robert Lewandowski's strike midway through the second half proved to be the winner for Borussia Dortmund as it overcame Bayer Leverkusen 3-2 in a topsy-turvy encounter Sunday.

Marco Reus' exquisite finish was followed by a Jakub Blaszczykowski penalty as the away side took control inside the opening 10 minutes before two goals from Stefan Reinartz drew the sides level after the break. Lewandowski responded a minute after Reinartz's equalizer, though, to put Dortmund back in front.

Blaszczykowski was denied by Bernd Leno from the penalty spot late on as he attempted to make the points safe, but Jurgen Klopp's team held on to leapfrog their opponents into second in the table.

Leverkusen was looking to bolster its position in the top two of the Bundesliga table with a victory, and Gonzalo Castro almost provided a perfect start inside the first minute, but his attempted lob floated harmlessly over the bar.

Despite looking fragile in defense, the champions were at their flowing best going forward and were ahead after just three minutes as Reus broke the offside trap and expertly chipped Leno after Lewandowski's perfectly weighted through ball.

Castro again found himself in the thick of the action, but he missed his kick when clean through on goal, and that proved costly as Klopp's side broke quickly and Leno was judged to have brought down Lewandowski with the Poland striker bearing down on the goal.

The goalkeeper was slightly lucky to get away with just a booking for the transgression, but he had no chance with Blaszczykowski's cool spot kick that sent the Germany Under-21 international the wrong way.

Die Borrusen were a constant threat in attack, and Felipe Santana almost made it 3-0 when he rose highest at a corner, but his header flew narrowly wide.

Santana was quickly back in the action at the other end of the pitch when he put in crucial challenge to deny Stefan Kiessling as the striker looked to latch onto a low cross from the left.

The home side introduced Sidney Sam from the substitutes bench at halftime, and the midfielder was involved straight away as he saw a shot well parried by reserve goalkeeper Mitchell Langerak after being found on the edge of the area.

Langerak was becoming increasingly influential in the Dortmund goal, and he made a superb save to deny Kiessling from point-blank range before Mats Hummels blocked Andre Schurrle's follow-up on the line.

The hosts eventually found their way back into the game as Kiessling took on Lukasz Pisczek before crossing for Reinartz to finish from close range in the 58th minute. Four minutes later the BayArena outfit found itself level as Reinartz headed in at the back post after Stefan Boenisch headed across goal to complete a remarkable comeback.

The tie score did not last long though, as Philipp Wollscheid's poor back pass was latched onto by Mario Gotze, and though Leno saved his poked effort, he could do nothing to prevent Lewandowski from sliding home the rebound.

Lewandowski was a constant thorn in Leverkusen's side, and he won his team's second penalty of the match as he got in down the right hand side and forced Boenisch into a foul. Blaszczykowski again stepped up but Leno guessed right and held onto the spot kick which was struck low to his left, preventing Dortmund from winning by a greater margin.

Van Persie: Balotelli has it all

    252698hp2.jpg

Manchester United star Robin van Persie has nothing but positive words for Mario Balotelli and believes the AC Milan striker has all the qualities necessary to succeed at the highest level.

The Italy international, who left Manchester City for Milan in the winter transfer window, has been criticized for his attitude on more than one occasion, but Van Persie has insisted that the 22-year-old is "a great guy".

"I have always been a fan of Balotelli. He is quick, strong and is courageous. He has all the qualities a striker needs to succeed at the highest level," Van Persie was quoted as saying by NUsport. "And he really is a nice guy as well. We spoke to each other every now and then when he still played at Manchester City.

"You have people who initially look like nice guys, but turn out to be different in the end. Balotelli is the exact opposite. He might not look like a nice lad, but he definitely is."

Balotelli and Van Persie will square off on Wednesday when Netherlands hosts Italy at the Amsterdam ArenA.

Reina refuses to shoulder blame for poor Liverpool results

    251014hp2.jpg

Pepe Reina has insisted that he is not to blame for Liverpool's failure in big games this season, despite his error costing the Reds against Manchester City on Sunday.

The Spaniard said he is not concerned by his form, although the Anfield club has been linked with other goalkeeping options, with Brendan Rodgers reportedly happy to sell Reina to Arsenal amid interest from the Emirates Stadium.

Liverpool is currently nine points off the top four, but has failed to win a game against any top-half side this season, and Reina admits the Reds cannot compete with the Premier League's top sides.

"I think with the likes of City, United and Chelsea, they have a big edge over us at the moment, both financially and squad-wise," he told Marca.

"There's a reason they are so many points ahead of us, and it's not because of one or two better players. Right now we can't compete with the big guns.

"Some people say I've had a bad season, but honestly I think I only had three poor matches, at the beginning of the year.

"It's been a strange season for me because I've missed lots of games with injury. This has been the most unsettled season, both personally and as a team, since I joined the club."

As well as interest from Arsenal, Reina has also been mentioned as a replacement for Victor Valdes, who is set to leave Barcelona ahead of his contract expiring in 2014, but the 30-year-old is not interested in such rumors.

"I have a Liverpool contract and I'm only thinking of playing for the club - I am calm," he explained.

"My dad has a past with Barca, he has affection for the club and perhaps that's why he said it. He wants the best for me. But I have a contract here and I have nothing else to say this.

"For me, Barca is the best in the world, for greatness and for style ... and Atletico are starting to equip themselves well, with a great coach. They are two great clubs. They are the two clubs where my father played and two great teams."

Cassano: Kovacic will be great for Inter, I'm 100 percent sure of it

    252174hp2.jpg

Inter forward Antonio Cassano has hailed the signing of Mateo Kovacic and believes the youngster will prove a valuable addition to the club.

The 18-year-old signed for the Nerazzurri from Dinamo Zagreb on deadline day for a fee believed to be in the region of 11 million euros.

And the former Milan striker believes Kovacic will soon prove to be a shrewd acquisition.

“I saw him in the first training session, and you can tell he's got great ability,” the 30-year-old told the club's official website.

“Inter have spent big and spent well on him – he's going to be here for the next 10 years.

“He'll become a great player, I'm 100 percent sure of that.”

Meanwhile, Cassano also addressed the comparisons being made between him and Milan's Mario Balotelli and believes the latter's propensity to attract the media spotlight is among the distinctions.

He added: “There's one difference between Mario and I – he probably likes being in the paper, whereas I don't.

“But I've done worse things in my life. I left training, I drove my car onto the pitch – you name it, I did it.

    “He's a good lad though."

Chelsea defender David Luiz a doubt for Brazil-England game

    241920hp2.jpg

Brazil and Chelsea defender David Luiz is a doubt for the friendly against England thanks to the calf injury that has sidelined him for the previous three fixtures.

The 25-year-old defender last featured as a substitute in the Blues' 0-0 draw at Swansea, but ended the game limping and hasn't appeared for Benitez's side since.

The Selecao will face Roy Hodgson's men on Wednesday at Wembley, however the former Benfica defender is awaiting confirmation on the extent of his injury and could miss out on lining up alongside club teammates Oscar and Ramires against the Three Lions.

Luiz told Globoesporte: "I didn't play for three matches because my calf still hurts. Today I'm going through some exams with [Brazil's physician Jose] Runco, he asked me. I'm training at 100% already and I hope to play for Selecao."

Berlusconi: Milan was owed the penalty

    252345hp2.jpg

AC Milan president Silvio Berlusconi has said his team's contentious last-minute penalty against Udinese at the San Siro was “owed.”

The Rossoneri were given the spot kick which gave them a 2-1 victory over the Zebrette and the former Italian prime minister admits it was a soft award.

“The decision was very doubtful, but it was a pleasure for all Milan fans to get the decision,” he said.Milan's winning goal came from new 22 million euro signing Mario Balotelli.

It was his second strike on a impressive debut and Berlusconi was clearly delighted with the immediate impact his January purchase made.“Balotelli? I could not sleep after his goals,” Berlusconi said.

Tottenham striker Adebayor vows to continue with Togo

    249903hp2.jpg

Emmanuel Adebayor has committed his future to the Togo national team, despite its recent Africa Cup of Nations exit at the hands of Burkina Faso and his troubled relationship with the nation's football authorities.

The Tottenham striker has had a tense relationship with Togo's football governing body, which culminated in him threatening not to play in this year's AFCON tournament after accusing his country's bosses of being incompetent.

He was left out of the initial squad but was later brought back at the insistence of the head of the Togo Football Federation. The 28-year-old also previously quit international football after a gun attack on the national side's team bus by Angolan militants ahead of the 2010 AFCON, but was persuaded to return later in the year.

However, despite his strained relationship with the Togolese authorities, Adebayor believes that football in his homeland is now heading in the right direction.

"I'm still young, so whenever my country needs me I'll be up for it because I've started something and I have to finish it," he told BBC Sport.

"We were stopped in the quarterfinals - maybe next time we'll be in the final and win it. So for me, it's never finished while I have the chance to win something."

The forward added: "It [the future] is looking good, with all the problems before coming to AFCON, and we've showed character, good face and showed we are a team that can play good football.

"I think I have done my best and physically I'm exhausted, but that's football. It's a tough one for all the players, for myself, for everyone, but life goes on."

Tottenham target Damiao keen to remain at Internacional 'for a long time'

    227865hp2.jpg

Leandro Damiao has admitted he is flattered by the interest shown in him by Tottenham, but insists he is fully committed to current club Internacional.

Damiao, who has been capped 14 times by Brazil, has been a long-term target for the Premier League outfit with failed attempts to capture his signature dating back to 2011. The 23-year-old insists he aims to remain at Internacional "for a long time," though, despite another bid from Tottenham for his services prior to the close of the January transfer window.

"[Internacional's] president Giovanni Luigi knows I always wanted to stay at Internacional, regardless of any offers that could come," Damiao told Brazilian newspaper Correio do Povo. "I certainly thank Tottenham [for their interest], they are a big club in Europe, but my focus is on Inter.

"I hope to help Inter for a long time, I have a long contract and I am very happy and focused."

Tottenham boss Andre Villas-Boas admitted shortly after the January transfer deadline that a summer move for Damiao was improbable with the North London club’s interest in the striker “probably finished.”

“Could it [a deal for Damiao] happen in the summer? No I don’t think so, it’s probably finished now," Villas-Boas told reporters. “The player has been linked recently with Spurs, we’ve made it public before that it’s a player that we chase, but we couldn’t agree on the full conditions so we’ve moved on.”

England striker Sturridge ruled out of Brazil friendly

    247817hp2.jpg

Liverpool striker Daniel Sturridge has withdrawn from the England squad for Wednesday's friendly clash with Brazil.

The 23-year-old has returned to his club for further treatment on a hamstring issue which arose during Sunday afternoon's 2-2 draw with Manchester City, during which he scored in the first half and was later substituted in injury time.

Having switched to Anfield from Chelsea for 12 million pounds during the January transfer window, Sturridge became the first player since Ray Kennedy back in 1974 to score in each of his first three games for the club.

He joins Manchester United midfielder Michael Carrick and Tottenham forward Jermain Defoe on the Three Lions’ casualty list, with manager Roy Hodgson yet to name any replacements for the trio.

Willian: It was time for a change

    206361hp2.jpg

Anzhi Makhachkala winger Willian says it was "time for a change", after completing a move from Shakhtar Donetsk in January.

The Brazil international moved to Russia for a reported 35 million euros fee and signed a contract until 2017 with Guus Hiddink's side, and although many believes the switch was financially motivated, he insists that was not the case.

"I've earned quite a lot of money in Donetsk," the 24-year-old told Sport Express. "With Shakhtar I also won a set of titles not only in Ukraine but in Europe also. I felt comfortable there. But the time for change has come."

The former Corinthians winger also revealed that conversations with the club's owners over their long-term ambitions helped to sway his decision.

"My conversation with Anzhi owner Suleiman Kerimov decided everything," Willian said. "After that I decided to join Anzhi. The club management are not only thinking about short-term gains, they really want to create a serious football infrastructure in Dagestan, to lift the game in the republic to a higher level."

Willian appeared 140 times for his former club Shakhtar, scoring 20 goals in total.

Drogba will get temporary licence to play for Galatasaray, says vice-president

    252716hp2.jpg

Galatasaray vice-president Refik Arkan is confident that Didier Drogba will shortly get clearance to play for the Turkish champions.

The 34-year-old left Shanghai Shenhua for Galatarasaray in the January transfer window, but his former club, Shanghai Shenhua, are adamant that he is still contracted to them

Nevertheless, the Istanbul giants have little doubt that Drogba will soon arrive at the Turk Telekom Arena.

"He might not be able to play against Antalyaspor. Because we need to get temporary permission from FIFA, and FIFA rules are such that the player should be played as quickly as possible," Arkan told Radyospor.

He added, "They will give a temporary license, followed by the permit.

"Drogba's country were knocked out of the Africa Cup of Nations. The team have now returned to Cote d'Ivoire. Afterwards, he will go to London. He will need a day or two to move his stuff. I think he'll come to Istanbul this week."

Galatasaray currently sits atop of the Turkish league table with 37 points from 20 games.

Saha travels to Rome ahead of rumored Lazio switch

Former Sunderland striker Louis Saha looks set to seal a move to Lazio until the end of the season on a free transfer.

The 34-year-old was recently released from his contract with Martin O'Neill's side after struggling to make an impact on the starting XI this season, making 14 goalless appearances during his brief stint on Wearside.

After having his one-year contract terminated early in England, Vladimir Petkovic looks set to swoop for the Frenchman to provide more squad depth to his attack after Miroslav Klose was sidelined for two months through injury.

"Bonjour. Escale a Paris et maintenant direction Rome. Now in Paris now direction Rome. Good morning," Saha tweeted from his official Twitter account.

He will stay with the Roman club until the end of the campaign, with a rumored 500,000 euro salary on offer after spending much of the last 14 seasons in England playing for the likes of Newcastle, Fulham, Manchester United, Everton and Tottenham.

Giroud: I have started better than Van Persie did at Arsenal

    229408hp2.jpg

Olivier Giroud insists his debut season for Arsenal has been more impressive than Manchester United forward Robin van Persie's.

The 26-year-old joined the Gunners in the summer along with Lukas Podolski and Santi Cazorla after helping Montpellier to an unexpected league triumph in Ligue 1 last season.

And with 14 goals to his name so far, plus 10 assists across all competitions, Giroud believes he is finally starting to settle and prove those doubters, who felt he would struggle to replace the Dutchman, wrong.

"For the first season ... It's better than Van Persie when he arrived here, although when he arrived at Arsenal [2004], he was younger [he was 20]," Giroud told L'Equipe.

The club was linked throughout the winter period with moves for both Schalke's Klaas-Jan Huntelaar and Barcelona's David Villa, but Giroud believes he still retains the faith of manager Arsene Wenger, even if he has admitted to being concerned about the rumors in the past.

"The British press has talked so much. The coach is not really okay for the winter market," he revealed."It would be hypocritical to say that I did not think about it. After that, I have always believed that the coach would leave me time, I did not see him cutting the grass under my feet."
