West Brom 0-1 Tottenham: Bale maintains Spurs' grip on fourth place

    252119hp2.jpg

A stunning second half strike from Gareth Bale was enough to help Tottenham Hotspur overcome West Brom in Sunday’s Premier League clash at the Hawthorns.

The winger's long-range effort marked the long-awaited end of the game's goalless first two thirds, with Tottenham having been handed the momentum by Mark Clattenberg's sending off of Claudio Yacob in the opening stages of the second half.

The red card was shown to the Argentine in the 47th minute for spitting in the direction of Kyle Walker following an altercation between the two. The home side's reduction to 10 men did plenty to change the landscape of the match and Spurs eventually went on to exploit their numerical advantage in goals as well as pressure.

The result allows Andre Villas-Boas’ men to continue their current course for fourth place, and indeed takes the club to within a point of London rival Chelsea in third. West Brom, meanwhile, remains in ninth spot level on points with Michael Laudrup’s Swansea.

With Peter Odemwingie frozen out of first-team affairs following Thursday’s transfer drama, Steve Clarke made the unexpected decision to pair his two main strikers, Shane Long and Romelu Lukaku, for only the second time in the league. Claudio Yacob and Steven Reid were also recalled to the Baggies’ starting lineup.

Spurs, meanwhile, opted for the same side which salvaged a point at Carrow Road in its previous fixture, with Michael Dawson captaining the team and the free role granted to Bale indicative of the Welshman’s on-going transition from straightforward winger to a more varied attacker. January signing Lewis Holtby was again required to begin the game on the bench.

The opening stages of the match were a rather cagey affair, with the home team's forward pairing linking well if sporadically, and midfield schemers Mousa Dembele and Chris Brunt both showing teasing flashes of creativity without being able to fully dictate proceedings.

As halftime approached, Andre-Villas Boas was left ruing his failure to bolster his side’s striking options during the transfer window as Jermain Defoe succumbed to a twisted ankle and limped off the field to be replaced by Holtby, with Clint Dempsey filling the void left by the England man.

On a number of occasions in the opening half the newly-unshackled Bale showed that he was adapting well to his free role, showcasing his explosive pace and trademark direct running with rousing surges from central areas. Twice his delivery from the right flank was cleared by the home defense, though the talismanic attacker came the closest of anyone to breaking the deadlock before the break, forcing Ben Foster to acrobatically tip his whipped effort over the bar moments before Mark Clattenberg blew to end the half.

No sooner had the second period got underway, though, than Yacob found himself dismissed after an exchange with Walker, granting Tottenham the onus to go on and secure a result.

A second half of sustained pressure duly followed, and after a long period of much away possession but little penetration, Spurs eventually broke the deadlock in the 67th minute. It was no surprise as to who was the man to do so, as Bale received a short pass from the onrushing Walker, shifted the ball past James Morrison and lashed a wondrous left-footed strike into the far corner of Foster's net.

After the long-awaited opener there was little doubt as to how the final result would manifest itself, the only real surprise being that the Spurs' continued pressure failed to increase their lead, with much foraging and a succession of set pieces from the visitors not enough to further permeate West Brom's back line.

Siena 3-1 Inter: Chivu dismissed as Nerazzurri crash to defeat

    252096hp2.jpg

Inter Milan lost to last-place Siena for the second time this season after the Nerazzurri were soundly beaten 3-1 on Sunday.

Andrea Stramaccioni's men never looked comfortable as they produced a pedestrian display that saw the Serie A strugglers come out on top thanks to
strikes from Innocent Emeghara, Alessio Sestu and Alessandro Rosina.

The visitors' only reply came from Antonio Cassano, but their misery was compounded by Cristian Chivu's second half sending off in the 55th minute, which put Siena in position to take points off the Nerazzurri yet again.

Stramaccioni’s side once again took the field with a back three and Siena looked to exploit their opponent’s lack of width early on, but January loanee Emeghara failed to make the most of a clean break down the left when he couldn’t pick out Alessandro Rosina in the center.

Inter then tested Siena goalkeeper Gianluca Pegolo, who has had to be on his guard all season, and he was forced into a couple of fine stops as Inter looked to take an early advantage. Siena’s stopper was forced into a flying save by Fredy Guarin after the Colombian let fly from 30-yards and moments later he was called into action once more to beat away Juan Jesus’s acrobatic effort.A whirlwind five-minute spell then saw the hosts take the initiative as the teams shared three goals in a matter of moments.

Siena broke the deadlock when Matteo Rubin broke down the left for the hosts yet again, this time with no Inter player in the middle able to prevent the ball from falling at the feet of Emeghara, who duly obliged by open the scoring with the simplest of tap-ins.

The hosts’ lead barely lasted a minute though, as Inter new signing Zdravko Kuzmanovic picked out Antonio Cassano on the edge of the area. His low, curled cross evaded Yuto Nagatomo in the center and nestled in the far corner for the Italian’s first goal since October.

The even scorline didn’t last long, though, as Inter was undone on 25 minutes by a moment of magic from Sestu. Once again Inter allowed their opponents space on the left and Rosina was able to pick out Sestu on the edge of the area, where he took a touch before sending a curling effort beyond Samir Handanovic and into the top corner. The away side looked to claw themselves level before the break, but Kuzmanovic’s deflected effort landed just wide of the post, and Cassano’s appeals for a penalty were waived away as the sides entered the dressing rooms level at the break.

The game swung in Siena’s favor just 10 minutes into the second half when Inter was reduced to 10-men after Chivu's sending off, and the hosts were given the chance to double their lead from the penalty spot.

Despite changing formation to a 4-4-2 at the break, Inter was were caught out by a long ball over the top which put Emeghara clean through. The Swiss international’s surge on goal was halted by Chivu’s rash challenge inside the area, with the Romanian seeing red and Rosina dispatching the penalty into the bottom corner to give his side a commanding grasp on the game.

Siena sat back on their lead and invited 10-man Inter in the final quarter, but despite Guarin going close with a free kick and Cassano rattling the crossbar with an effort in a crowded penalty area, the home side was able to hold on to complete a famous double over the Nerazzurri.

Manchester City 2-2 Liverpool: Aguero stunner rescues a point for City

    252192hp2.jpg

MANCHESTER -- Manchester City lost ground in the title race after being held to a 2-2 draw by Liverpool in a thriller decorated with a hat trick of outstanding goals.

Two thunderbolt strikes in either half from Daniel Sturridge and Steven Gerrard cancelled out Edin Dzeko’s 23rd minute opener. But Sergio Aguero took advantage of a Pepe Reina mistake with 12 minutes left to score a brilliant equalizer from an almost impossibly tight angle.

They were three finishes that would grace any fixture, and this pulsating encounter was yet another great advert for the drama and entertainment of the Premier League. It leaves Roberto Mancini’s team, out-played for much of the game, nine points behind pace-setter Manchester United after letting four points slip in five days.

Liverpool, which became the first team to score against City this year when Sturridge rifled in the equalizer, was unfortunate that its commanding display did not bring the reward of a first league victory of the season against a team in the top half of the table.

Brendan Rodgers team only has two points to show for highly commendable draws at Arsenal and City this week and has slipped nine points behind fourth-placed Tottenham, but progress is clearly being made at Anfield.Mancini had reacted to City shedding two points at QPR by recalling Dzeko and Matija Nastasic to the starting XI in place of Carlos Tevez and Samir Nasri.

Rodgers made one change from midweek, with fit-again Jose Enrique replacing Andre Wisdom, which allowed Glen Johnson to shift across to right back.Liverpool controlled the opening quarter of the match and tried to take advantage of the absence of twin totems Vincent Kompany and Yaya Toure.Only a wonderful block from Pablo Zabaleta stopped Sturridge giving the visiting side the lead in the 14th minute following a Joe Hart misjudgement, while Suarez was unable to take advantage of two clear sights of goal.

Against the run of play, City took the lead in the 23rd minute with a beautifully-worked counterattack. The home side worked some space on the left flank, James Milner drove the ball into the box and Dzeko tapped in his 11th league goal of the season.

There was an element of controversy to the equalizer five minutes later even though Sturridge’s strike against his old club was as cleanly struck as you will ever see.City was furious that referee Anthony Taylor had not stopped the play when Dzeko fell down in a heap in the Liverpool half at the start of the move, but the complaint lacked legitimacy on two counts.

Teams are only required to put the ball out of play if it is a head injury and, as soon as Sturridge’s shot rested in the net, Dzeko seemed to forget about his injury and jumped to his feet to vociferously complain, for which he was subsequently booked.

Moreover, the goal was well deserved. It was the first City had conceded since the third of Norwich’s strikes in the seven-goal thriller at Carrow Road on Dec. 29.
Liverpool’s dominance continued after the break. Rodgers’ team was quicker to the ball, moved it around purposefully and continually put City’s vulnerable defense on the back foot.

Going a goal ahead in the 73rd minute was the least the Merseysiders deserved. Receiving the ball in a central area around 30 yards from goal, Gerrard controlled it with his chest and arrowed a magnificent strike low to Hart’s right. It was vintage Gerrard and reward for an outstanding display by the skipper, who had also set up the opening goal.

Yet the Englishman’s technique and impudence was soon swiftly matched by Aguero. After Reina had rushed out of his goal to try and shepherd the Argentine away from danger, the striker took possession and finished from a near-impossible angle close to the line.

City finished the stronger of the two sides but Liverpool managed to hold on to claim its second 2-2 result of the week.

:(:sorry:Xavi ruled out for Spain with hamstring injury

    191757hp2.jpg

Barcelona star Xavi has been ruled out of Spain’s friendly with Uruguay on Wednesday night with hamstring discomfort, Spain’s football federation (RFEF) has confirmed.

Real Madrid midfielder Xabi Alonso had already pulled out of the international clash with a groin problem after the Blancos’ 1-0 defeat to Granada on Saturday night.

Alonso’s fellow Spain teammate but Liga adversary Xavi was examined by a Roja doctor on Sunday after complaining of pain in his right leg, and has been pulled out of the friendly squad to face the Copa America champions.

It is believed that the 33-year-old Blaugrana player picked up the issue in Barca’s 1-1 draw with Valencia at the Mestalla on Sunday evening.

Vicente del Bosque still has a very strong squad to choose a starting lineup from, including the likes of Andres Iniesta, Juan Mata and Sergio Ramos.
No replacement has, as of yet, been announced to fill in for Xavi.

:cool:Gerrard named England's player of the year

    193000hp2.jpg

Liverpool midfielder Steven Gerrard has been named England's player of 2012 at an award ceremony at St George's Park.

Gerrard assisted all of the Three Lions' goals at Euro 2012, although he did not manage to score an international goal across the year.

Danny Welbeck, who scored five goals in 11 appearances (more strikes than any other for England in the year), came in second, while Ashley Cole was voted third by fans on the Football Association's official website.

“I still feel fresh, looking forward to the next game as much as my debut. Every time you put the England shirt on, it is a proud moment," Gerrard said at the awards ceremony at St George's Park.

Three Lions boss Roy Hodgson also praised his captain and believes the Reds' skipper can continue playing at the highest level for a long time.

“In Steven the younger players can look at someone who has 100 caps, and they must think ‘goodness me, he started at the same age I am, but he's still here 14 years later’ and what a career he's had," Hodgson said.

"In Steven's case he has a great enthusiasm and passion to play, and that can be infectious to other players. The other thing about Steven is that he is not a player who can be pigeon-holed, he is an all round midfielder capable of contributing right across the pitch from defense to attack.

"I can see him playing for many years to come.”

Valencia 1-1 Barcelona: Messi penalty denies Los Che

    252209hp2.jpg

Valencia held Barcelona to a 1-1 draw in La Liga as its energetic, yet resolute display made for a frustrating night at the Estadio Mestalla for the Catalans.

Ernesto Valverde had set out to refuse the Blaugrana their usual time on the ball, and it was a tactic that looked to have worked superbly as Ever Banega put the hosts ahead. Lionel Messi equalized from the spot soon after though, scoring in a record 12th consecutive La Liga fixture.

Both teams opened the game with a lot of energy, but Barca looked more threatening as it was largely in control of possession. The visitors were unable to fashion any chances to test Vicente Guaita as Los Che defended in numbers and pressed quickly.

Valencia complemented its enthusiastic defense by playing on the break when it managed to wrest the ball away from Barcelona, with Roberto Soldado keen to make an impact. Midway through the first half the striker's bright run came to an end on the edge of the box due to a trip from Javier Mascherano. Tino Costa struck the free kick, but he failed to get it past the wall, and his team's appeals for a handball on Xavi were ignored.

Los Che's resilience at the back continued to frustrate the Blaugrana, and Valverde's men were rewarded in the 33rd minute. Soldado's cross was headed away by Gerard Pique, but only as far as Banega, who brought the ball down and rifled a low shot past Victor Valdes at his near post.

Barca were handed a route back into the game as Joao Pereira clumsily cut down Pedro in the box in the 39th minute. Messi stepped up to take the penalty and fired an unstoppable effort into the top left-hand corner for his 34th league goal of the season.

The teams went into the break level, but with just five minutes gone in the second half Valencia nearly regained the lead. Andres Guardado's cross was met by Soldado, but he could not guide his header inside of Valdes' post.

The game continued to go from end-to-end, and five minutes later Cesc Fabregas had a chance to put the Catalan side ahead after Messi's defense-splitting throughball, though his shot only rippled the side netting.

Valencia nearly struck after Sergio Canales replaced Banega in the 64th minute, as it did not take long for the former Real Madrid man to make his presence known. From Guardado's cutback, a fantastic, arrowed shot towards looked to be heading for the top corner until Valdes' fingertips turned it wide of the post.

The keeper was once again in fine form in the 89th minute, as a brilliant double save, the second of which came from a Soldado follow-up effort, stopped the hosts from stealing all three points at the death and ruining David Villa's return to his former home ground.
