Borussia Monchengladbach 1-1 Borussia Dortmund: Wasteful visitors denied points by Younes

    258087hp2.jpg

Amin Younes' first Bundesliga goal denied Borussia Dortmund all three points from its visit to Borussia Monchengladbach as the Borussen derby ended in a 1-1 draw.

The 19-year-old's strike midway through the second half cancelled out Mario Gotze's penalty as the 2012 champions failed to capitalize on a dominant opening period.

The visitors, who were without top scorer Robert Lewandowski, failed to pose enough of a threat going forward despite having the majority of possession and are now 17 points behind leaders Bayern Munich at the top of the table.

After an even start, Dortmund went close to opening the scoring inside 10 minutes as Kevin Grosskreutz saw his effort saved by Marco-Andre ter Stegen after Moritz Leitner headed Mats Hummels' cross into his path on the edge of the six yard box.

Without the suspended Lewandowski, the visitors were struggling to make an impact in the final third, though ter Stegen was forced into a save from Leitner's powerful header.

Gotze was the man tasked with filling Lewandowski's boots in the forward position, and he made his first meaningful contribution of the game as he took the ball around ter Stegen before being tripped by the goalkeeper.

The referee rightly pointed to the spot and Gotze brushed himself down before sending the goalkeeper the wrong way and give Jurgen Klopp's side a deserved lead.

The home side was struggling to get a foothold in the game, and it continued to come under pressure as Hummels and Ilkay Gundogan both shot off target while Leitner fired a long range effort straight at ter Stegen.

Hummels was withdrawn at halftime due to injury, and his replacement Felipe Santana almost handed the hosts an equalizer as his weak clearance only found Younes, but the teenager's volleyed effort failed to stretch Roman Weidenfeller.

Gladbach was gradually coming back into the match, and Weidenfeller was forced to tip Harvard Nordtveit's cross over the bar, with the resulting corner falling to Martin Stranzl, but his free header from close range was straight at the goalkeeper.

Lucien Favre's side eventually found the goal that its improved performance deserved as it attacked down the left, and after Oscar Wendt's cross was only half cleared, Younes fired home from the edge of the area via a deflection off Santana.

Despite conceding, Dortmund was still a threat going forward, and after winning the ball back inside the hosts' box, Gotze fired into the side netting, though a measured cross may have been better advised.

Germany international Gotze was by far the visitors' main threat, and he tested ter Stegen with a powerful strike after working his way into a shooting position. The goalkeeper was equal to it, though, pulling off an acrobatic save.

Gladbach almost pulled off an unlikely victory in the final minute of normal time as substitute Peniel Kokou Mlapa broke the offside trap and rounded Weidenfeller but could only find the side netting from a tight angle.

That wasn't the end of the drama as Gotze made his way past two defenders before laying the ball across goal, only for Sebastian Kehl to sum up his side's day by firing over the bar with the goal gaping.

Juventus 3-0 Siena: Giovinco among scorers as Juve extends Serie A advantage

    256768hp2.jpg

Juventus has gone seven points clear at the summit of Serie A after goals from Stephan Lichtsteiner, Sebastian Giovinco and Paul Pogba handed the hosts a 3-0 win over lowly Siena.

The Swiss defender gave Antonio Conte's side the lead in after 30 minutes following a perfectly weighted pass by Mirko Vicinic, before his Italian teammate secured all three points in the 70th minute, only for Pogba to add a third late on.
Andrea Pirlo forced out the first real opportunity of the encounter after Giovinco was fouled on the edge of the Siena box, but the Juventus midfielder could only guide his free kick over the bar.

The hosts enjoyed the larger share of possession in the initial 15 minutes and looked to make their domination count as Lichtsteiner and Mirko Vucinic linked up excellently on the right before the former fired an effort over the Siena goal.

Claudio Marchiso then forced a superb diving stop from Gianluca Pegolo having combined with Vucinic as Juventus began to exert itself before Giovinco forced the Siena goalkeeper into a smart save at his near post. The Bianconeri deservedly took the initiative with a half hour gone after Pegolo palmed Vucinic's lofted pass onto the shins of the surging Lichtsteiner and into the far right corner.

Juventus looked to add a second moments later following some good work by the creative Vucinic and Kwadwo Asamosh, before the latter picked out Pogba in the middle of the park. His effort was tame and trickled straight through to Pegolo, though.

Pirlo came close to doubling the hosts advantage on the hour mark, but couldn't direct his audacious chip from the edge of the 18-yard box in the far corner, with Pegolo well beaten before Pogba lashed over from distance as Juventus looked to wrap up all three points.

With 15 minutes remaining, the Turin outfit secured the win after Giovinco was picked out by Pirlo from a free kick. The former pushed down the left side of the Siena 18-yard box before firing into the roof of the leaving Pegolo with no chance.

The goal sprung the visitors into life and moments after the goal, Gianluigi Buffon was called into action, as he tipped Innocent Emeghara's goalbound header onto the bar. Christian Terlizzi came even closer for Siena in the final five minutes, beating Buffon from the edge of the box, only to see his effort cannon back off the foot of the post.Any chance of a comeback was dealt a final blow in the dying moments, though, as Pogba added Juve's third from the egde of the Siena area.

Substitute Emanuele Giaccherini came perilously close to adding a fourth in added time, but the three-goal victory saw Juventus extend its lead at the summit of Serie A, with Napoli able to cut the deficit back to four points when it plays Udinese on Monday.

Newcastle 4-2 Southampton: Cisse screamer helps Magpies in thriller

    258067hp2.jpg

Newcastle United swept past Southampton in a six-goal thriller at St. James Park on Sunday, winning 4-2 after falling behind in the opening minutes.

The visitors had taken an early lead through Morgan Schneiderlin before Moussa Sissoko equalized and Papiss Cisse scored on a sensational 35-yard volley to give the Magpies a halftime lead.

The Saints responded through Rickie Lambert’s 100th goal for the club straight after the restart, but a Yohan Cabaye penalty and Jos Hooiveld own goal sealed the victory to give the hosts their third win in four league games.

The visitors made a sensational start as Jack Cork whipped a dangerous cross into Lambert, who nodded down for Schneiderlin to smash home a near-post half-volley after just three minutes. On the quarter of an hour mark, the Magpies began to quash Southampton’s superiority as Sissoko smashed a low drive across goal to force Artur Boruc into a diving save.

By the half-hour mark, the Magpies had taken complete control, and Sissoko gave them their just reward. On 33 minutes, Yoan Gouffran made a fantastic run down the left, twisting and turning all the way to the byline before unleashing a low shot straight at Boruc. The Polish shot stopper was equal to the Frenchman’s effort but sent the ball into the path of Sissoko, whose easy tap-in gave him his third league goal.

Ten minutes later, the home side had the lead thanks to an unstoppable strike from Cisse. Stand-in keeper Rob Elliot had thumped a long ball up-field and the 27-year-old – who was a good 35 yards out – took one look at goal and smashed a flawless volley straight into the top corner.

The Saints responded immediately after the break, as Lambert went close with an excellent free kick that was matched for its brilliance by Elliot’s fingertip save. The 31-year-old would not be denied at the second time of asking, though, as Adam Lallana sent a ferocious low cross into the area and the forward pounced to score his milestone goal in a Southampton shirt.

Newcastle responded swiftly and in kind. Southampton’s brief ascendancy was followed by a period of sheer Newcastle pressure, and on 66 minutes, the Magpies had their reward with a penalty, as Danny Fox handled Mathieu Debuchy’s cross in the area. Cabaye became the third Frenchman of the game to score as he calmly slotted the ensuing spot-kick past Boruc.

The Saints’ misery was compounded after 79 minutes, when Daniel Fox cleared Davide Santon’s cross straight into the shins of Hooiveld, with the ball sailing in for the Dutchman’s third own goal of the season.

Manchester City 2-0 Chelsea: Yaya Toure and Tevez on target as hosts close gap on leaders United

Roberto Mancini’s public attack on his players paid immediate dividends as Manchester City brushed Chelsea aside 2-0 at Etihad Stadium.

The champion's dominant display was rewarded with second-half goals of real quality from Yaya Toure and substitute Carlos Tevez.Toure’s 63rd-minute opener came shortly after Joe Hart had atoned for clumsily conceding a penalty by launching himself to his right to keep out Frank Lampard’s spot kick.

Tevez sealed the win five minutes from time to help City pull clear of Chelsea in second place and reduce Manchester United’s lead at the top back to 12 points.
Such is the dominance of the runaway leaders that the main fight is for the minor places but City demonstrated that it is not a completely diminished force by overwhelming its main rival for the runner-up spot.

City has fallen short in the goalscoring department this season and the solution of Mancini, who had criticized a number of his players in an interview earlier in the week, was to support spearhead Sergio Aguero with David Silva and a battery of midfielders. Yaya Toure, James Milner and Javi Garcia were supplemented by Jack Rodwell, starting his first match since the 3-1 home win over QPR on Sept. 1.Chelsea, starting just 64 hours after its draw in Prague on Thursday night, rang the changes, with Demba Ba returning to the side in place of Fernando Torres.

The visitors looked jaded in the first half as City poured forward in droves and at times threatened to tear them apart. The hosts’ main tactical ploy was to target the right side of Chelsea’s defense and free up either Gael Clichy or David Silva on the overlap to launch a cross on to the head of one of their powerful on-rushing midfielders.

Rodwell, in particular, made a series of excellent runs into the box and his height was a real danger to the opposition. The former Everton man could have had a hat trick in the opening half but Chelsea held firm through a combination of last-gasp defending, the safe hands of Cech and some mixed finishing.

Five minutes into the second half, a Chelsea long ball sent Ba bearing down on the City goal. Despite being covered by Kolo Toure, Hart came rushing out to harass the Senegal striker, who left his foot in and was taken down by the England No. 1.
The award of a penalty was debatable but it could easily have been avoided by Hart. With the criticism of Mancini no doubt ringing in his ears, the keeper atoned for his error of judgement by flinging himself low to his right to keep out Lampard’s spot kick.

Ten minutes later, City’s supporters had even more reason to celebrate. Yaya Toure collected the ball from Silva in the box, surged past two defenders and, confronted by the presence of Gary Cahill, opened up his body to guide a wonderfully composed finish past the grasp of Cech. It was a quite stunning goal, combining the power of a bulldozer with the precision of a surgeon. The game opened up as Chelsea searched for an equalizer but Benitez’s team were too sloppy in possession to cause City much angst.

The home side were rewarded for their perseverance with a second goal after 85 minutes. Silva was once again the goal-maker, laying on the ball for Tevez to line himself up for a thunderbolt strike past Cech.

Manchester City are interested in signing Luis Suárez and Edinson Cavani, says manager Roberto Mancini

Roberto Mancini is interested in signing a striker to bolster misfiring Manchester City, with Liverpool's Luis Suárez and Napoli's Edinson Cavani his top targets.

    luis-suarez_2489623b.jpg

Mancini believes City have under-performed in the transfer market since winning the title last season, and is cheered by the arrival of director of football Tkiki Beguiristain and and CEO Ferran Soriano at the club to oversee recruitment.
A striker is a priority for Mancini, who sold Mario Balotelli to AC Milan in January, and securing a deal for Napoli's Edinson Cavani is thought to be his priority.
"I like him [Cavani], but all the world wants him," Mancini said in an interview with The Guardian, before confirming that he is also interested in Luis Suárez.
"I don't know what can happen," Mancini said. "Suárez plays for a top team like Liverpool. Cavani plays for Napoli."
City, trailing Manchester United by 12 points in the Premier League, have endured a disappointing season with the FA Cup their only realistic hope of a trophy after another early exit from the Champions League.

Manchester United face battle with Pep Guardiola over Borussia Dortmund striker Robert Lewandowski

Sir Alex Ferguson is facing a battle with Pep Guardiola over Robert Lewandowski after the incoming Bayern Munich coach signalled his intention to pursue the Borussia Dortmund forward at the end of the season.

    lewandowski_2472790b.jpg

Manchester United manager Ferguson has maintained an interest in Lewandowski since identifying the Pole as an alternative to Robin van Persie last summer.
Ferguson and assistant manager Mike Phelan watched Lewandowski in action for the German champions against Manchester City earlier this season, with Jurgen Klopp, the Dortmund coach, admitting that United are keen to sign the striker.
Guardiola’s appointment as Bayern manager from the end of this campaign has seen the Bundesliga giants emerge as serious contenders for Lewandowki, however.
The 24-year-old has made it clear to Dortmund that he will not sign an extension to his contract this summer, forcing the club to decide whether to sell or allow him to leave as a free agent in 2014.
United took advantage of a similar contract situation involving Shinji Kagawa last summer to sign the Japanese midfielder from Dortmund.

West Ham 2-3 Tottenham: Bale screamer mWest Ham 2-3 Tottenham: Bale screamer moves Spurs up to thirdoves Spurs up to third

LONDON - Gareth Bale scored a sensational last-minute winner as Tottenham beat rival West Ham 3-2 to move up to third in the Premier League in a thrilling encounter at Upton Park.

The Welshman took his tally for the season to 15 league goals as he slammed a 35-yards rocket into the top corner past West Ham goalkeeper Jaaskelainen, who was fantastic throughout the night.

Bale had himself put Spurs ahead in the 13th minute from the edge of the penalty area before Andy Carroll equalised with a penalty 12 minutes later.

West Ham took the lead in the second half when Joe Cole tucked the ball in to the far corner from a tight angle, but Gylfi Sigurdsson equalised from close range 14 minutes from time.

The game seemed to be heading for a draw before Bale struck at the death to move Spurs up to third place in the race for the Champions League, two points ahead of Chelsea and four points above north London rivals Arsenal.

West Ham manager Sam Allardyce made four changes to the side that lost against Aston Villa, with James Collins returning in central defense and recalls for Guy Demel, Gary O’Neil and Matt Jarvis with Mark Noble ruled out through injury.

Hugo Lloris was restored as Tottenham’s goalkeeper in place of Brad Friedel as Andre Villas-Boas went for height in defense, playing Jan Vertonghen at left back with Michael Dawson and Steven Caulker paired in central defense.

Before kick off, West Ham honored Bobby Moore on the 20th anniversary of his death, the World Cup-winning captain’s name rang around Upton Park during a minute’s applause with the former defender’s family on the touchline.

It led to a blood-and-thunder opening to the game as tackles flew in and the rival fans goaded each other on a crisp, floodnight evening in east London.

Allardyce identified Bale as the man to stop before the game, so he must have been furious with the ease in which the Welshman put Spurs ahead in the 13th minute.

Demel’s lazy pass gave possession straight to Bale 25 yards from goal and the Tottenham man worked the ball on to his left foot before firing low across goal into the bottom corner.

Yet West Ham responded and drew level in the 25th minute as Carroll scored just his third goal of the season.

The on-loan Liverpool striker won the spot kick as he went down under a challenge from former Hammer Scott Parker, whose challenge was reckless despite him getting a touch on the ball. Carroll made no mistake as he rammed the ball into the top corner from 12 yards.

West Ham had goalkeeper Jussi Jaaskelainen to thank for keeping the club in the game as he made two athletic saves either side of the break to keep out almost identical headers from Caulker.

The Finn then made a brilliant double save in the 56th minute, tipping substitute Sigurdsson’s curling shot on to the post and reacting quickly to save Emmanuel Adebayor’s header when the Spurs striker should have scored the rebound.

Two minutes later, the hosts took the lead. Joey O’Brien played a long pass to Cole, who stayed onside before bringing the ball down and somehow turning it into the far corner from a tight angle.

Jaaskelainen then produced more heroics with his best save of the night, touching Bale’s curling effort on to the crossbar at full stretch.

Not to be upstaged, Lloris made a superb stop of his own to deny Taylor after the West Ham substitute was put through on goal by Cole’s clever pass.

Fourteen minutes from time, Tottenham leveled with the scrappiest of goals. West Ham completely failed to deal with a free kick delivered from the right by Bale and after the ball pinballed around the penalty area Sigurdsson was able to scuff home from two yards.

Then as the clock ticked to 90 minutes, Bale demanded the ball in central midfielder, shifted it on to his left foot and rammed a shot into the top corner so powerful that even Jaaskelainen could do nothing. Stunning.
