Tottenham 3-0 Inter : Bale and Spurs keep their runs going

    261533hp2.jpg

LONDON -- Tottenham will head to Milan next week holding a commanding 3-0 lead over Inter courtesy of goals from Gareth Bale, Gylfi Sigurdsson and Jan Vertonghen in the first leg of the Europa League last-16.

Sigurdsson picked up where he left off against Arsenal on Sunday, finding the Welshman with a teasing cross, before pouncing on Samir Handanovic's parry to double the lead. Vertonghen added a third with a powerful close-range header in the second half.

It didn't take Tottenham long to stir the home crowd as Sigurdsson collected another assist after good work on the left flank. His inswinging cross in the sixth minute was met by Bale, who climbed higher than Esteban Cambiasso and placed a header firmly into the bottom corner for his 21st goal of the season.

Under the lights, Tottenham was flying. Sigurdsson, reveling in another start under Andre Villas-Boas, was sharpest to the loose ball after Handanovic made a mess of Jermain Defoe's low strike and tapped home to put Spurs 2-0 up after just 18 minutes.

Though Inter threatened in brief patches, the first 40 minutes were all about Tottenham's control of the game as the English club played patiently but effectively, slicing through the middle via Mousa Dembele and Scott Parker's driving runs.

Bale, who was booked for diving and will miss the second leg, flirted with the idea of stealing the headlines, but didn't need to and for swathes of the first half was regularly just a link between midfield and attack.

A driving run and shot wide on the hour were as close as he would come to getting a second. He did help add a third goal though as his corner was powered home by Vertonghen, who earlier had missed a golden chance from a similar position.

For Andrea Stramaccioni's side it could have been a different story had Ricky Alvarez, once linked with Arsenal, not dragged a golden chance wide of Brad Friedel's far post. The 24-year-old looked the most likely man to find an away goal in the first period but his finishing was too wild to trouble the Spurs goal.

As the game entered the final 30 minutes Defoe, who returned to the lineup in place of the injured Emmanuel Adebayor, almost made it 4-0, ruing Handanovic's fortunate save with his elbow as he swivelled and snapped a shot at goal. He would later waste a four-on-two break looking for a shot instead of passing to the onrushing Kyle Walker or Bale.

Lennon had been diligent in his work on the right flank but after another surging Parker run collected the ball in the Inter half and charged at the backline. His nutmeg on Christian Chivu was impressive, but Handanovic was out quickly to smother the finish.

Inter was not buried yet though and after introducing Fredy Guarin to proceedings drew Friedel into a vital save as Cassano was played in on goal from a quick free-kick.

As Inter pressed higher and more desperately, space began to open and substitute Lewis Holtby should have done better with his 20-yard effort, but the home side remained in control and will take a huge advantage back to Italy.

Steaua Bucharest 1-0 Chelsea: Rusescu penalty leaves Blues with uphill task

    261487hp2.jpg

Chelsea fell to an uninspiring 1-0 defeat at Steaua Bucharest in the first leg of their last-16 Europa League tie on Thursday night.

In the first-ever meeting between the two sides, Raul Rucescu scored what the winner as he converted a first-half penalty after being brought down by Ryan Bertrand.

Chelsea offered very little in response and goes into the second leg at Stamford Bridge knowing the tie is still finely poised, though the team's dour performance will hardly leave the players brimming with confidence.

Benitez made five changes from the Blues' 1-0 win over West Brom on Saturday, with skipper John Terry, Yossi Benayoun, Bertrand and John Obi Mikel all starting, while Fernando Torres was selected to lead the line.

The home side kept Cristian Tanase in the starting lineup despite his sending off during the team's win over Gaz Metan, although striker Stefan Nikolic missed out with a knee injury.

A tentative opening period saw the visitors sit back and soak up what Steaua had to offer, with an initially subdued atmosphere hardly providing either side with encouragement early on.

The first moment of inspiration came on the quarter of an hour mark when Torres showed skill and determination to beat the home left back. Nothing came of it as his follow up sent the ball out of play – but at least it was a glimpse of the Spaniard of old.

Torres was at it again 15 minutes later, pressuring the Steaua defense to win a corner, but it was duly wasted.

There was simply no dynamism in Chelsea's play. After the highs of last May's Champions League victory, no one would blame those present in Munich for asking if this was the same club as the one that lifted Europe's top prize.

It got worse for the Blues minutes later as Bertrand conceded a penalty after fouling Rucescu inside the box. The decision was debatable but the referee’s word was final and Bertrand saw yellow. Rucescu took the spot kick and, showing no hesitation, the Romanian slammed the ball past Petr Cech straight into the bottom left corner.

Chelsea hit back as Benayoun forced a save from Ciprian Tatarusanu on 40 minutes – but it said a lot that it was the team's first meaningful shot on goal of the encounter.

It was more of the same after the break. The home side held the ball well and, aside from the odd surging run from Eden Hazard, the Chelsea was nonexistent.

On 63 minutes, Frank Lampard dinked a pass through to Torres in an attempt to create something, but it was to no avail. Benitez knew there was only one man who could inject the required spark and sent on Juan Mata. But the Spaniard’s introduction changed little.

Hazard flashed a volley over after 73 minutes, while Marko Marin came close at the near post 10 minutes later, yet the home side held on to secure its 17th win in 19 home games this season.

Stuttgart 0-2 Lazio: Onazi stunner seals victory for brilliant Biancocelesti

    261484hp2.jpg

Lazio took a significant step towards the quarterfinals of the Europa League, thanks to a 2-0 victory at Stuttgart on Thursday evening.

Ederson put the Italians ahead against the run of play midway through the first half of an open and engaging last-16, first-leg clash at the Mercedes-Benz Arena, and Ogenyi Onazi sealed a fine away win for Vladimir Petkovic's men with a stunning solo effort 11 minutes into the second half.

The final scoreline was perhaps a tad harsh on Stuttgart, which wasted a number of fine openings. Indeed, after having had the better of the early exchanges, the Germans went desperately close to opening the scoring 16 minutes in when the lively Christian Gentner stood the ball up wonderfully well for Shinji Okazaki, who made a tremendously clean connection with the cross, only to be denied by a fine reaction save from Federico Marchetti.

The Lazio goalkeeper was called into action again less than 60 seconds later, this time keeping out a header from Serdar Tasci, as the hosts began to up the ante. It felt like a goal was coming. The only surprise was that it came at the other end, but then, Stuttgart only had itself to blame in that regard.

Both William Kvist and Arthur Boka made a mess of trying to clear a routine cross into the area and their ineptitude was ruthlessly exploited by Ederson, who swivelled on the ball before firing it left-footed past Sven Ulreich and into the bottom right corner of the goal.

Stuttgart should have been level just before the break but Okazaki somehow construed to head wide from less than five yards out, after being the recipient of the most perfectly placed cross from Gentner.

Shocking as that miss was, it did at least lift the home side, which began the second period brightly. However, it had merely been lulled into a false sense of security once more, with Lazio all but putting the game, and perhaps even the tie, beyond it with a second away goal shortly before the hour mark.

In fairness to Stuttgart, it appeared to be in very little danger of conceding when Onazi picked up possession in midfield. However, the 20-year-old Nigerian jinked his way past two would-be tacklers before coolly lifting the ball past Ulreich and into the back of the net.

Once again, though, the hosts had an almost immediate chance to get back into the tie. Once again, though, Okazaki squandered it. In fairness to the Japanese, it was an opening all of his own making, the 26-year-old attacker lifting the ball over Lorik Cana before dragging his subsequent volley just wide of the far post.

Still, it was an opportunity that Stuttgart could ill-afford to miss because it was ultimately unable to find a way through its opponent's supremely well-marshaled defense. The Germans now face the rather unenviable task of having to score at least twice in Rome next week if they are to have any hope of reaching the quarterfinals.

Anzhi 0-0 Newcastle: Willian hurt, Eto’o unable to convert in Europa League draw

    261483hp2.jpg

Anzhi Makhachkala and Newcastle United battled to a dull 0-0 stalemate in the first leg of their Europa League round of 16 tie.

Guus Hiddink named ex-Real Madrid midfielder Lassana Diarra and former Barcelona man Samuel Eto’o in his starting lineup, while his managerial counterpart Alan Pardew handed starts to a host of French players including Hatem Ben Arfa.

Anzhi started the brighter of the two teams with big-money January arrival Willian getting on the ball in good areas and helping to keep his side ticking over, and it was the hosts who had the first real opening of the match. Willian slid the ball through to Oleg Shatov, but instead of opting to shoot, he decided to try to pick out a teammate in the middle but the ball was cleared to safety.

Anzhi was dealt a blow halfway through the first half when Willian was forced to go off after picking up a knock - with freescoring forward Lacina Traore coming on in his place.

The Russian outfit tried to step it up a gear just past the half-hour mark, when Traore thought he was clean through on goal after latching on to an Eto’o through ball, only to be denied by the linesman’s flag.

Newcastle goalkeeper Rob Elliot was forced in to making his first save of the match when Eto’o ran with the ball before unleashing a dipping volley from 30 yards which was well put over by Tim Krul’s stand-in.

Neither side could manage to create any real openings - with Newcastle struggling to get into its stride going forward, and the match headed in to the interval goalless.

The second half continued in the same fashion as much of the first - with Newcastle struggling to keep the ball long enough to create any chances and Anzhi enjoying the majority of the possession.

The deadlock was almost on the hour mark when Traore laid the ball back for Odil Ahmedov to cross. He could only overhit his attempted ball in, but it broke to former Chelsea man Yuri Zhirkov, who chested it down for Eto’o to strike a hard, low shot that Elliot did well to put behind for a corner.

This seemed to spark Newcastle in to life, and the Magpies created their first chance of the game shortly after. Yohan Cabaye did well to pick out Ben Arfa inside the box, but his attempt to dink the ball over Vladimir Gabulov failed to come off, and the stopper made a comfortable save.

Anzhi continued to look for a vital goal with Eto’o again squandering a half chance in the closing moments of the match, and the tie remains delicately poised ahead of next Thursday’s second leg at St James’ Park.

Bale suspended for Tottenham's second leg against Inter after dive

The Welshman was adjudged to have gone to ground too easily under a challenge from Walter Gargano and received his third booking of the season in the Europa League Gareth Bale will miss the second leg of Tottenham's Europa League last-16 tie with Inter after being booked for diving in the first leg at White Hart Lane.

The in-form wideman opened the scoring for Spurs in the sixth minutes with a headed finish but earned a yellow card for simulation moments later after clashing with Walter Gargano in the visitors' box. Tottenham went on to add two more goals in a 3-0 win.

Having also been booked in his side's meetings with Panathanaikos and Maribor earlier this season, the Welshman is now set to serve a one-match suspension.

Bale will now miss out on a return to the San Siro, where he famously made his name with a quick-fire hat trick against the then-European champions back in 2010.

Demichelis: Isco will be next to leave

    121425hp2.jpg

The Argentina defender believes teammate Isco will be the next to be sold by Malaga, with the Andulasians still faced with financial problems Malaga defender Martin Demichelis has expressed his frustration at the possibility of a mass exodus of players from the club, believing young talent Isco will be next to leave La Rosaleda.

The Spain international has attracted the attention of some big clubs from around Europe with his impressive performances in La Liga and the Champions League.
And following continued financial implications for the club as it faces a one year ban from European competition, the Argentina defender believes the playmaker could soon be on his way out."For me it is a bad sign for the future of the club. I believe the next player to be sold in the short term will be Isco, because he is the one in the squad who will be most wanted," Demichelis told reporters.

The Andalusians were bought by Qatari Sheikh Abdullah bin Nasser Al-Thani back in 2010. The Arab owner invested heavily to improve the squad and the spending spree resulted in Malaga’s highest ever league finish of fourth, resulting in qualification to the Champions League for the first time. However, Al-Thani has had a change of tactics and has already begun to sell some of the club's assets with the likes of Santi Cazorla and Jose Rondon departing for pastures new.

Demichelis himself has been rumored to be rejoining River Plate as his contract is set to expire at the end of next season but remained tight lipped on whether a move would come into fruition.

“It is possible to analyze River again in the future, but no date is set,” the 32-year-old said.

No controversy in Ferguson dropping Rooney, insists McClaren

    255176hp2.jpg

The former England boss believes the Scot's decision to bench the Englishman against Real Madrid has been sensationalised, and sees the star striker's future with the Red Devils Sir Alex Ferguson's former assistant Steve McClaren insists "everyone is looking for controversy" as questions mount surrounding Wayne Rooney's future at Manchester United.

The United boss omitted the England international from his starting lineup as the Red Devils crashed out of the UEFA Champions League with a 2-1 loss to Real Madrid on Tuesday, fueling speculation that a switch away from Old Trafford could be imminent for the 27-year-old.

McClaren believes the media have overplayed the significance of Ferguson's decision to drop Rooney, though, insisting the the Scot's call was motivated by footballing considerations.

"Everyone is looking for controversy and some like to find it in the selection Sir Alex made," the ex-England manager told Sky Sports News. "It is premature and obviously stirred up by the media."

McClaren went on to explain that the United boss constantly evaluates his players and their value to the squad as a whole, and insists he sees Rooney remaining with the Red Devils for the foreseeable future.

"Sir Alex will look every week, every day, every season at each individual player very closely in training and games and say what kind of condition they are in and is he still mentally right for Manchester United," McClaren said. "If not, he will have no hesitation in removing a player.

"But for the moment, I cannot see his [Rooney's] future beyond Manchester United."

Owen: Rooney short of options if he leaves Manchester United

    255176hp2.jpg

The Red Devils striker has a fractious relationship with Old Trafford boss Sir Alex Ferguson, but the Stoke man does not think the 27-year-old has many suitors.
Former Manchester United and England striker Michael Owen has indicated that Wayne Rooney may not have many clubs to choose from should he leave Old Trafford.

The Red Devils forward, who was signed from Everton in 2004, was left on the bench for United's crunch Champions League tie with Real Madrid on Tuesday - a match they went on to lose in controversial circumstances.

The dropping of the forward in such a crucial match has led to speculation that United may look to offload Rooney in the summer, but Owen says that his star power leaves very few options available.

"Sometimes when you're at the level he is at you don't have many options," he told talkSPORT. "If you are a mediocre player you have 20 teams in England and aboard that you can move to.

"If Wayne Rooney moves, where does he go to? Real Madrid, Barcelona, Bayern Munich, Manchester City, Chelsea and PSG, there's only half a dozen teams."

The 33-year-old, now at Stoke, is not convinced that Rooney will actually leave the club at all, however, suggesting he has the attributes needed to bounce back from the setback.

"It's just speculation though," he continued. "He's been dropped for one game and I'm sure he will bounce back.

"Obviously Wayne has got to get his head down now and start recapturing his best form. He's certainly got the right attitude and ability to get back into the manager's thoughts."

'He is out of our possibilities' - Dortmund boss Klopp dismisses Dzeko talk

    220534hp2.jpg

The Manchester City striker has previously stated he will one day return to Bundesliga, but the German champions' manager insists he will not be arriving at Westfalenstadion.

Borussia Dortmund manager Jurgen Klopp has dismissed reports linking Manchester City striker Edin Dzeko with a move to the Bundesliga champion.
The Bosnia international revealed in February that he "would love" a return to Germany after a successful four-year spell with Wolfsburg between 2007 and 2011. Dortmund general manager Hans-Joachim Watzke similarly rejected claims in the press on Tuesday, and now Klopp has followed suit.

"Dzeko is a good player but he is sadly out of our possibilities," Klopp, who previously described Dzeko as "extraordinary", stated at a press conference on Thursday.

Dzeko scored 85 goals during his time in Bundesliga, and he has admitted that infrequent appearances for the Premier League champion could force him to look elsewhere for regular first-team minutes -- despite him being City’s top goalscorer this season with 13 goals in all competitions.Regardless of a large financial windfall from Dortmund’s run in the Champions League this season, Klopp insists a move for the striker, who cost City 27 million pounds two years ago, would not be feasible for his club.

He would fill a potential need area, though. Dortmund’s current first-choice striker, Robert Lewandowski, has long been linked with a move away from Westfalenstadion – with Manchester United and Bayern Munich reportedly his most serious suitors.

Sir Alex Ferguson has revealed that Wayne Rooney will be at Manchester United next season.
The England international's future was thrown into doubt after Ferguson sensationally axed him for the visit of Real Madrid earlier this week.
But speaking ahead of United's FA Cup sixth-round showdown with Chelsea on Sunday, Ferguson says he has not plans to sell Rooney in the summer.

Facing the media: Sir Alex Ferguson hit back at suggestions Wayne Rooney would be ditched in the summer

'He'll be here next year,' Ferguson said. 'You can have my word on that.'
'The issue you're all going on about in the papers is absolute rubbish.
'There is absolutely no issue between Wayne Rooney and I. To suggest we don't talk to each other on the training ground is absolute nonsense.
'He understood the reasons for not playing him and that was completely tactical. And I think I was right. We don't always get it right but I think we did get it right.

All smiles: Rooney appeared in good spirits yesterday despite being omitted from United's startling line-up

'Danny Welbeck is the best player we have in terms of operating in a double role. We had to choke Xabi Alonso's ability to control the game, which Danny did, and that took away Alonso's control of the game and his ability to go further forward and be an attacking player.
'We don't always get it right but we definitely did on Tuesday.
'I left out Shinji Kagawa after he scored a hat-trick. I thought I would get more stick for that.'
Ferguson is still bitter about the circumstances of Tuesday's defeat, in particular the dismissal of Nani, on which the entire contest turned.

    article-2290080-1876BDB5000005DC-840_634x431.jpg

'It is hard to keep your faith when you have things like that,' added the Scot.
Ferguson refused to say whether Rooney would actually start on Sunday.
And he again repeated his belief that the 27-year-old needed to play matches in order to retain full fitness, an assessment that has raised so much debate over the past few days.
'Why should I help anyone by telling them my team? We don't do that,' said Ferguson. 'But Wayne does need a lot of football. He has always been that type. That has always been the case.'
Ferguson was speaking for the first time since United were dumped out of the Champions League with assistant United boss claiming the Scot was 'too distressed' to engage with the media.
'Mick was the right one to go out,' added Ferguson. 'He’s calm, he’s very good with the press and I’m going to use him more.
'That was a nice time to have a chat with Jose have a glass of wine and relax a bit.'
Ferguson said he had been concerned about the appointment of Turkish referee Cuneyt Cakir prior to Tuesday's game.
Cakir has now sent off seven players from English teams, but never one against them.
'I was concerned. I said that to my staff,' he said. 'I had a big worry about it but it is gone now. There is nothing we can do about it.'
'However, a meeting with Chelsea offers the perfect pick-me-up.
'In the cold light of day, though, we're Manchester United and we have to get on with it,' said Ferguson. 'There's nothing that can be done now. We have an important issue of a quarter-final on Sunday.
'I've cleared my mind. It's just another day in the history of our club. Not a good day, but another day.'
