Suarez in the 'last-chance saloon' at Liverpool after Ivanovic incident, claims Souness

    274032hp2.jpg

The former Reds player and manager was embarrassed after the Uruguayan appeared to bite the Chelsea defender before bagging the equalizer in the 2-2 draw on Sunday.

Former Liverpool manager Graeme Souness believes Luis Suarez is in "last-chance saloon" at Anfield after the Uruguayan appeared to bite Branislav Ivanovic during the 2-2 draw against Chelsea.

Suarez, who equalized for Liverpool in added time to earn a point against Rafael Benitez's team, drew the ire of Ivanovic in the second half of their Premier League clash on Sunday afternoon. The former Ajax striker has previously been banned for racial abuse and gesturing towards opposition supporters, and Souness believes the latest controversy could put his future at the club in doubt.

"I'm not sure what to make of it," Souness told Sky Sports. "Embarrassing. He's making it very difficult for himself to stay at Liverpool, that puts him in the last-chance saloon. Most important is safeguarding the good name of the football club. Liverpool are world renowned. People will be talking about this for a long, long time, and it will show Liverpool in a very bad light.

"This is not the first time he has bitten someone in the football match [Suarez was banned for seven matches for the same offense while playing for Ajax in 2010]. He is risking everything this great club stands for. I've never seen something like that in a football match before. There are lines you just can't cross, and he has crossed it today.

"Those pictures will be beamed across the world. It's very difficult for Brendan Rodgers to defend him. We will get politicians involved in this and everything."

Rodgers: Liverpool will review Suarez bite

    274043hp2.jpg

The Reds boss refuses to comment on the incident but reveals that the club will be investigating the clash between the Uruguay international and Branislav Ivanovic.Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers has confirmed that the club will review Luis Suarez's apparent bite on Chelsea defender Branislav Ivanovic during Sunday's Premier League clash.

    Suarez-Biite_2933626.jpg

The two players came together in the second half, with the Uruguay international grabbing the Serbian's arm and sinking his teeth into his elbow. The incident was not spotted by the match officials, and Rodgers refused to comment on it but stressed that the club would investigate the alleged act.

"We'll review it and look at the video of it and make a comment then," Rodgers told Sky Sports. "I've only just come in and seen the opportunities from a football perspective. Until you review it you cannot speak totally of it."

Rodgers instead looked to highlight his side's excellent second-half performance, twice coming from behind against the Blues, and felt that the hosts had been on the wrong end of several decisions themselves.

"There were other incidents - the elbow on [Jamie] Carragher by [Fernando] Torres, right on his cheekbone," Rodgers said. "But until we review [the Suarez bite] I can't comment. I've no thoughts on it.

"I've just come in on the back of a terrific second-half performance, where we had to come back."

Chelsea interim boss Rafa Benitez, making his return to Anfield, was denied a valuable win in the race for the top four following Suarez's late winner.

Like Rodgers, Benitez said he had not seen the incident and was not able to comment on whether Suarez should even have been on the pitch to score, but was frustrated by the amount of injury time added on.

"I didn't see anything," Benitez said. "I concentrated on the game.

"It is difficult to explain - minimum six minutes, six minutes 45 [seconds] is difficult. We had the game nearly won, it was a surprise - why six minutes? We don't know - the rules aren't clear."

:cool:Manchester United one win away from Premier League title

    242384hp2.jpg

Sir Alex Ferguson's side can wrap up its 20th league crown against Paul Lambert's struggling Aston Villa following Tottenham's dramatic victory at home over Manchester City.

Manchester United can win the Premier League title with a victory against Aston Villa on Monday, after rival Manchester City slumped to a 3-1 defeat at Tottenham.

The Red Devils are 13 points clear of Roberto Mancini's men, and can extend that lead to an unassailable 16 with victory at Old Trafford. United lost out on what would have been its 20th league crown in dramatic circumstances last season, but can make amends against Paul Lambert's strugglers.

It looked as though Sir Alex Ferguson's men would have to wait at least another week when City took an early lead against Spurs at White Hart Lane, but a seven-minute blitz saw Clint Dempsey, Jermain Defoe and Gareth Bale turn the match on its head.

For Ferguson, it would mark his 13th league title with United during his 27 years in charge, while the Old Trafford club would move two league crowns clear of Liverpool, which has 18 titles to its name.

Luis Suarez to join Bayern Munich this summer. o__O

Liverpool forward Luis Suarez has admitted he could leave the Reds and join Bayern Munich in the near future.

The Uruguay international had previously stated he was happy to remain at Anfield. However, Bayern, who will be managed by former Barcelona boss Pep Guardiola from next season, have been heavily linked with a move for the Reds' talisman of late and would reportedly table a big-money offer for him in the summer. And Suarez has now played his part in fuelling the speculation, by encouraging the German giants to make an approach for him.

"If one day the club made an offer for me, we will sit down and see what is the best for everyone," the Express quoted the forward as saying

'Vile' Suarez has let down his fellow professionals, insists Nevin

The former PFA chairman believes that those who voted for the Liverpool striker to be Player of the Year will regret doing so after he bit Chelsea's Branislav Ivanovic Former Professional Footballers Association chairman Pat Nevin believes that Liverpool forward Luis Suarez has let down his fellow professionals with his "vile" approach to the game.

The Uruguayan became embroiled in fresh controversy on Sunday after he was caught by TV cameras biting the arm of Chelsea defender Branislav Ivanovic.

The former Ajax star had gone some way to mending his tarnished reputation, one that had been earned following his ban for racially abusing Patrice Evra last season, with a series of outstanding displays for his club this term and made the six-man shortlist for the PFA Player of the Year award, though Nevin does not expect him to win.

"Footballers tend to forgive and forget most indiscretions, so I feel sorry for those players who were still prepared to vote for him despite his racism ban and admitting to diving," the 49-year-old, who spent five years as PFA chairman, told Goal.com.

"At least the PFA will escape the embarrassment of seeing Suarez lifting the Player of the Year award. He's got enough votes to get on the shortlist but I don't know any black players who voted for him so I very much doubt he's polled enough to win.

"It puts the PFA in a difficult situation because they are there to defend one of their members but the other party is a member, too."

The PFA has given Suarez, who was banned for seven games by the Dutch Football Association for biting then-PSV player Otman Bakkal in 2010, its support by offering the 26-year-old anger management counseling and Nevin believes that he would be foolish to turn down the gesture.

"What Suarez did was so ridiculous that it would be funny if it wasn't so serious. Stupidity doesn't begin to describe it. Apart from the act itself, he's done this in front of 40,000 spectators and millions watching on television," the Scot added. "It raises more questions about his state of mind. What was his thought processes at the time? Was he thinking of anything? And what does this show to kids who like to copy their favorite players?

"Suarez is guilty of a vile concept of sport. Not only has he cheated but he's seen to get away with it. His handball on the line allowed Uruguay to beat Ghana in the World Cup finals in 2010 and [on Sunday] he should have been sent off but stayed on the pitch to score an injury-time equalizer."

Despite his latest issue, Nevin acknowledges that there is "no way" that Liverpool would entertain the prospect of sacking Suarez and risk losing a huge commodity for nothing.

"I live the real world and there is no way that Liverpool will sack their most valuable property so that someone else can pick up a 30 million pound player for nothing," he continued.

"Brendan Rodgers might decide in the summer that Suarez carries too much baggage and offloads him but, in the meantime, the club will, I'm sure, accept any FA punishment for the player while almost certainly taking internal disciplinary action of their own."

Oxlade-Chamberlain: Late push for top four 'seems to be the Arsenal way'

    202965hp2.jpg

The young midfielder is confident that his side can repeat last season's last-gasp run to the Champions League and insists that he remains motivated despite a lack of starts.

Arsenal youngster Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain believes that his side is capable of a late push to reach the top four once again.

The Gunners have qualified for the Champions League in each of the past 15 seasons but fell five points behind fourth-placed Chelsea after a 2-1 away defeat to Tottenham in March.

Since then the north London side has climbed to third in the table, having picked up 16 points from its last six league games, although both the Blues and Spurs have a game in hand and are one and two points behind, respectively.

"We have to turn it around. We did it last season and need to do it again. It seems to be the Arsenal way," Oxlade-Chamberlain told Sky Sports News.

"We just have to take each game as it comes, work together as a team and hopefully we will get there."

Manager Arsene Wenger has given the attacking midfielder just 17 starts in all competitions this season but the former Southampton starlet insists that he is no less motivated.

"Just being here, at a club like Arsenal, I am loving every minute of it," the youngster said.

"To be involved with England, playing a few games, that's the motivation I need. I am hungry for more."

Ivanovic will not press charges against Suarez, Merseyside Police confirm

    274071hp2.jpg

The Serbian stopper, who suffered "no apparent physical injuries", was interviewed by police on Sunday evening but does not want to take the matter through legal channels.

Chelsea defender Branislav Ivanovic will not press charges against Luis Suarez despite being bitten by the Liverpool striker on Sunday afternoon.

Suarez has publicly apologized and has been fined by the Reds for his "inexcusable behavior", while any potential punishment from the Football Association is still pending.

"Merseyside Police can confirm that following an incident at the Liverpool v Chelsea game yesterday (Sunday, 21 April 2013) officers have spoken to Branislav Ivanovic in person," the force said in a statement. "He had no apparent physical injuries and did not wish to make a complaint.

"This is now a matter for the Football Association."

Liverpool have fined Suarez an unspecified amount for his actions, while the Professional Footballers' Association has offered him anger management counseling.

Despite calls from many pundits that the Reds should sell their striker, managing director Ian Ayre has stated that the issue has no bearing on Suarez's Anfield future.

Pique: We ended German football's dominance

    268765hp2.jpg

The towering defender says Spanish football has taken Germany's place as the most successful following Barca and Spain's successes
Gerard Pique is eagerly anticipating Barcelona's Champions League semifinal tie against Bayern Munich and believes Spanish football has displaced the German game as the dominant force in Europe in recent years.

Barcelona has won three Champions League titles since the turn of the century, while Spain was crowned European champions in 2008 and 2012 as well as winning the 2010 World Cup and Pique has stressed soccer has changed with the Spanish possession-based style of play.

"Bayern are a great opponent, but people should not forget that we are still a great team, too," Pique was quoted as saying by AS.

"The time where football was defined as a sport of 11 players against 11 players with the Germans eventually emerging victorious is something of the past. And we are the ones who ended it. With Barcelona and Spain, we have left our mark on the game with a style of play that has changed history."

Manchester United coach Meulensteen tips Van Persie for management

    268009hp2.jpg

The 49-year-old has watched his compatriot work with the club's young players on the training ground but expects him to extend his playing career for as long as possible.

Manchester United first team coach Rene Meulensteen has tipped Robin van Persie for a future in management when his playing days come to an end.

The 49-year-old, who has acted as Sir Alex Ferguson's No.2 while Mike Phelan recovers from a routine knee operation, expects Van Persie to put off the prospect of retirement for as long as possible.

Having witnessed the striker work with the club's young players on the training ground, however, Meulensteen believes he has the necessary qualities to take up coaching.

"When you see how he works with the youngsters, he's committed, patient," he told Algemeen Dagblad. "There is a coach hiding inside him, although I think he will play as long as he can."

The Netherlands international's compatriot revealed that Van Persie slotted into the United squad seamlessly after arriving from Arsenal last summer.

"Robin loves the game," Meulensteen explained. "I told him right after he came here: you here, it's a good fit. He immediately found his way in the group. No arrogance, nothing. Perfect."

Barzagli: Juventus deserves Serie A success

    232989hp2.jpg

The former Wolfsburg star has hailed his side's performances this term in the big games and admitted Milan made life difficult for Juve.Andrea Barzagli believes Juventus fully deserves its Serie A success this season as the club rose to the occasion in the games when it mattered most.

The Scudetto holder beat third-placed AC Milan 1-0 on Sunday evening to maintain an 11-point lead over Napoli, and Barzagli insists Juventus has been even more convincing than last term.

"We’ve won extremely difficult away games, against Inter and Lazio for example, and now [at home] against Milan. We deserve to be top of the league," Barzagli was quoted as saying on the official Juventus website.

"At times last season, also when playing at home, we struggled to break the deadlock. However, this year we’ve managed to bring more intensity to our displays and make the best of the chances created."

The center back then reflected on Sunday's hard-fought win over Milan and admitted things were not easy for Juve.

"It was a very difficult game, at least in the first half. Milan made us chase them, moved the ball around well and we weren’t particularly aggressive," Barzagli added.

"We upped the tempo after the interval and things changed."

Juventus resumes Serie A action on Sunday when the club travels to city rival Torino.
