Liverpool managing director Ian Ayre says biting incident has no bearing on Suarez's Anfield future

Many pundits have called for the Reds to ship the controversial Uruguayan out of the club following his latest transgression, but the official says there is no intention to do so Liverpool managing director Ian Ayre says Luis Suarez's bite on Chelsea defender Branislav Ivanovic has no bearing on his Anfield future.

The Uruguay striker appeared to sink his teeth into the arm of Ivanovic during Sunday's 2-2 draw, and he has since apologized and been fined by the club.

Many pundits have called for the Reds to sell their star striker, while manager Brendan Rodgers admitted that "anybody can be replaced" in his postmatch observations.

But when questioned on Liverpool's official website, Ayre, who also believes the club have dealt with the issue sufficiently, refuted suggestions that Suarez could be shown the door.

"Not at all," he responded. "It affects his future in the sense that we have to work with him on his discipline - but Luis is a very important player to the club. He's a very popular player with his teammates. As we keep saying, he signed a new four-year contract last summer and we'd all love to see him here throughout that contract."

He added, "He's a fantastic player, top scorer and everything we'd want in a striker, so there's no change there. This is more about getting him back on the right track and it's largely down to Brendan now to work with him on that side of his character."

Liverpool received criticism from all quarters over their handling of last season's race row involving Suarez and Manchester United left back Patrice Evra, but Ayre believes the club have done as much as they can this time around.

"I think the most important thing is that we acted swiftly [Sunday]," he added. "Luis issued his apology and then we spoke with him last night and then again this morning. We've taken action to fine Luis for his actions. Brendan has spoken to him and I've spoken to him, and Brendan will be working with him further on his discipline.

He added, "You can see when you speak to him how sorry he is about it and he's certainly shown quite a lot of contrition to us - and as part of that, he's also asked we donate the fine to the Hillsborough Family Support Group.

"I think he felt like he let a lot of people down yesterday. We'll work with Luis - Brendan particularly - on this side of his character in his game. Hopefully that puts the matter to rest from our point of view and we'll wait and see if there's any further action from the football authorities."

Voller: Chelsea target Schurrle will only be sold if it suits Bayer Leverkusen

    268247hp2.jpg

The sporting director has again spoken out regarding the youngster's reported future move to Stamford Bridge, warning the Blues that any deal must satisfy the Bundesliga outfit.Bayer Leverkusen sporting director Rudi Voller has warned Chelsea that midfielder Andre Schurrle will only be allowed to leave if the "package" suits the Bundesliga side.

Speculation has been rife that the 22-year-old is set to join the west London club in the summer, with reports in Germany suggesting he has already agreed personal terms on a move to Stamford Bridge.

Voller revealed last week he was in London "to negotiate" a summer switch for Schurrle, with the midfielder expected to sign a five-year contract at Stamford Bridge while Kevin De Bruyne heads in the opposite direction on loan - though Leverkusen is thought to be eying a permanent switch.

"The transfer of Schurrle is a question of the total package. There are some more items and De Bruyne is one of them," Voller said on TV show Sky90.

"[De Bruyne is] a top alternative and can play a similar position like Andre. If a good player leaves we've got to sign another good, or even better, player."

Despite Chelsea reportedly being close to sealing a deal for Schurrle, Voller feels the youngster would be better served with more regular first-team football as he looks to break into the Germany squad ahead of World Cup 2014.

"Next year is the World Cup and then he wants to be a starter for Germany," Voller added. "He has the potential."

    Schweinsteiger fit to face Barcelona

    253926hp2.jpg

The influential midfielder has shaken off an ankle problem in time to take part in the Champions League semifinal first leg against the Catalans this week.

Bayern Munich coach Jupp Heynckes has received some encouraging news from the treatment table in the build-up to the first leg of the Champions League semifinal against Barcelona on Tuesday as Bastian Schweinsteiger has been given the green light by the club's medical staff.

The Germany international has struggled with a minor ankle injury in the past few days and was consequently rested for this weekend's 6-1 Bundesliga win over Hannover.

Nevertheless, Bayern is confident he will be fully match fit in time for Tuesday's encounter at the Allianz Arena.

"The players who did not start the Hannover clash completed a punishing workout on the practice ground, where they were joined by Bastian Schweinsteiger, who has shaken off a minor ankle injury and will in all probability be fit to face Barcelona on Tuesday," a statement on the Bayern website reads.

Bayern will have to make do without long-term injury absentee Holger Badstuber, Toni Kroos and the suspended Mario Mandzukic on Tuesday, but the team doesn't have any other noteworthy injury problems.

'Magical' Messi boosts Barcelona, admits Alves

    273175hp2.jpg

The Brazil international believes the return of the Blaugrana star can aid the club in its pursuit of Liga and Champions League success this season Dani Alves has stressed that Lionel Messi has "magical" importance to Barcelona and believes he could be key in ensuring the club's success this season.

The Spanish giants were heading for a Champions League exit against Paris Saint-Germain a fortnight ago before Messi came off the bench and proved instrumental in Tito Vilanova's side progressing to the semifinals.

The Argentina international has missed the Blaugrana's last three Liga games, however, but has been included in the squad to face Bayern Munich on Tuesday night and Alves made no attempts in playing down his importance to the cause.

"Messi knows he is the best player in the world and the power he has to change a game around just with his presence out on the pitch," the Brazilian full back told AS.

"We needed him against Paris Saint-Germain and sometimes you have to find extra reserves or strength for the benefit of the team.

"Messi's presence changes a lot of things. It frightens our rivals and excites our fans... that is because we are talking about the best, because he has magical powers."

The Brazil international also believes his teammate's talent is natural compared to Real Madrid star Cristiano Ronaldo, whose ability he believes comes from his effort on the training field.

"Messi has an innate talent and Cristiano's comes from hard work, that's the difference. Messi was born with a gift which has allowed him to become the best and he is, he didn't have to work at it, he was born with it," added Alves.

"Cristiano is very good but he has worked to improve and be the best. Messi, on the other hand, works normally and is the best because he has been given a gift by God. That's just my own, humble opinion anyway."

Pepe hoping for luck to favor Madrid against Dortmund

    270473hp2.jpg

The 29-year-old was a part of the Blancos side which was eliminated by Bayern Munich last season and he is hoping he and his teammates can go "full throttle" for the win.Real Madrid defender Pepe is hoping that his side gets a large slice of luck that he believes was absent in the club's Champions League campaign last year ahead of the upcoming semifinal clash with Borussia Dortmund.

Jose Mourinho's men travel to Germany on Wednesday hoping to secure a first-leg advantage in their pursuit of a 10th European crown.

The Blancos were sent crashing out of Europe's elite competition by Bayern Munich on penalties at this stage of the tournament last season and Pepe is hoping for luck to favor his team this season.

"Wednesday's game is incredibly important for us - everybody in the squad is conscious of that," Pepe said at an event for the Real Madrid supporters club. We must go into the game at full throttle but not be over hasty. We should try to remain composed because we have the return leg at home. Failure is a very strong word to use should we not win this semifinal. We will be going out to win and hopefully with that extra bit of luck which we didn't have at this stage last year.

"We need to be hopeful of winning the 10th European cup but once we are out on the pitch, we should just focus on playing well. You cannot win the Champions League without getting past this stage and if we manage to do that, I won't care who we face in the final."

Paris Saint-Germain 3-0 Nice: Menez, Ibrahimovic and Chantome strike in PSG win

    274113hp2.jpg

Paris Saint-Germain claimed a 3-0 success over Nice at Parc des Princes to take another step closer to the Ligue 1 title.

Following the club's Coupe de France exit in midweek, Carlo Ancelotti had said he wanted a reaction from his side and goals from Jeremy Menez, Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Clement Chantome ensured the capital side bounced back in an impressive manner.

A whirlwind start from the home side was capped by Menez’s opening goal, which was the product of a fine breakaway. Although Marco Verratti won the ball and Zlatan Ibrahimovic was also involved, it was Javier Pastore’s ball juggling in the box that ultimately provided the former Roma man with a simple finish.

It took until midway through the second period for the home side to add a second. Nice goalkeeper David Ospina will shoulder much of the blame as he failed to dribble out of an awkward situation and was provoked into a rash foul on Ezequiel Lavezzi, which brought both a penalty and a red card for the Colombian. From the penalty spot, Ibrahimovic thumped past Joris Delle.

With just a couple of minutes remaining, a lovely interchange between Blaise Matuidi and Ibrahimovic teed substitute Chantome up to score a third goal.

PSG really attempted to throw down the hammer after the red card and was unlucky not to score more goals.

Thiago Silva, in particular, was robbed of one of the goals of the season as he finished from an outrageously tight angle after rounding Delle. Indeed, position was so acute the Brazilian’s effort was chalked off as the assistant referee had deemed the ball to have been on the wrong side of the line when he struck it.

Former France Under-21 international Delle was called upon to make a string of late stops. Maxwell had a fine strike turned over the top by Nice’s second-string goalkeeper, who also kicked away a fierce drive from Ibrahimovic after the Swede got in behind the visiting rearguard once again.

The match had not always been so one sided, though. Nice had actually enjoyed plenty of possession in the first half but was unable to draw Salvatore Sirigu into anything more than a routine stop.

Ospina, meanwhile, prevented Ancelotti’s side from going 2-0 up before the break by making a stunning reaction save from Menez, yet that good work would be so embarrassingly undone in the second period.

PSG remains nine points clear of second-placed Olympique de Marseille and is at least three weeks away from claiming a first Ligue 1 title since 1995. Nice, meanwhile, remains in contention for third but was comprehensively outclassed on Sunday night.

Juventus 1-0 AC Milan: Vidal edges Bianconeri ever closer to title

    274079hp2.jpg

Juventus took a significant step towards a second successive Serie A title with a 1-0 win over AC Milan that simultaneously upset its opponent's hopes of qualifying for next season's Champions League.

Arturo Vidal scored the only goal of a desperately underwhelming encounter, the Chile international converting from the penalty spot after Kwadwo Asamoah had been felled in the area by Marco Amelia shortly after halftime.

With Juventus in possession of an eight-point cushion at the summit of Serie A, the game was arguably of greater importance to Milan, particularly with fourth-placed Fiorentina having defeated Torino earlier in the day to draw to within a point of the Rossoneri. Unsurprisingly the visiting side began the brighter of the two, with Robinho and Stephan El Shaarawy both getting shots away inside the opening five minutes.

However, it was Juve which went closest to an early breakthrough, with Christian Abbiati doing wonderfully well to change direction in time to scramble a deflected Andrea Pirlo free kick away for a corner.

Unfortunately for Abbiati, that was to be his last contribution of note before being forced off through injury with less than 15 minutes on the clock. He was replaced by Amelia, whose first task was to deal with another Pirlo free kick, which he did with the minimum of fuss.

The Rossoneri reserve goalkeeper had little to do for the remainder of the half, though, with Mirko Vucinic failing dismally to hit the target with a free header from yet another Pirlo set-piece.

In truth, Milan looked the slightly more likely to score during a cagey opening half. Massimiliano Allegri’s men were certainly the more composed side in possession, while Robinho and the recalled Stephan El Shaarawy buzzed about Giampaolo Pazzini with real intent.

But the team's hopes of retaining control of the middle of the park were hit by the injury-enforced withdrawal of Massimo Ambrosini during the interval. The hopes of winning the game, meanwhile, were hit by the concession of a penalty just 10 minutes later.

Ignazio Abate and Amelia were both caught out by a seemingly innocuous diagonal in behind the Milan defense. Abate left it for his goalkeeper, who never had any chance of getting there in time and was powerless to prevent himself from clattering into the alert Asamoah, who had stolen in behind a hesitant Abate before cleverly nicking the ball past Amelia.

Vidal buried the resulting spot kick, firing high to Amelia's left to change the entire complexion of the game. Indeed, Milan suddenly looked completely devoid of any belief and the toothless visiting team did not even go close to forcing an equaliser in the remaining 35 minutes, thus allowing Juve to coast to a victory that leaves the team requiring just four more points to clinch the title.

Suarez fined by Liverpool for Ivanovic bite

    luissuarezback20130421_576x324.jpg

The Uruguayan striker confirmed on Twitter he received an undisclosed club punishment following the incident that marred yesterday's last-gasp 2-2 draw against Chelsea at Anfield.

Liverpool striker Luis Suarez has revealed he has been fined by the club after biting Chelsea defender Branislav Ivanovic, with the fee being donated to the Hillsborough Family Support Group.

Unseen by match officials, the 26-year-old lashed out at the arm of the Serbian in the 2-2 draw at Anfield, with the Professional Footballers Association since announcing the group is to offer the striker anger management counseling.

Suarez tweeted: "For my unacceptable behavior yesterday the club has fined me today, I have asked the club to donate the money to the Hillsborough Family Support Group for the inconvenience I have created to the Liverpool fans and to Ivanovic."

Speaking after the game yesterday, Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers and managing director Ian Ayre hinted that the club would take action against Suarez.

Ayre, who cancelled a trip to Australia in order to personally deal with the matter, said the incident did not "befit" the behavior of a Liverpool player.

"Luis is aware that he has let himself and everyone associated with the club down," Ayre told the club's official website.

"We will deal with the matter internally and await any action from the Football Association."

The Football Association has yet to announce its own course of action, but Suarez will likely face a lengthy ban.
