Aston Villa 6-1 Sunderland: Benteke batters Black Cats as hosts claim valuable win in relegation scrap

    christianbentekecornerflagceleb20130429_576x324.jpg

A second-half hat trick from top goalscorer Christian Benteke helped Aston Villa cruise to an important 6-1 vcitory over Sunderland at Villa Park.

Two first-half goals from Ron Vlaar and Andreas Weimann set the tone early on and a late tap-in from Gabriel Agbonlahor secured a vital three points for Aston Villa, which now sits five points clear of relegation.

Danny Rose scored for the visitors in the 33rd minute.

Paul Lambert made one change from the Aston Villa side that lost 3-0 to Manchester United last weekend, with Sylla replacing Charles N'Zogbia to make his first appearance since their 2-1 defeat to Liverpool at the end of March.

Meanwhile, Paolo Di Canio made two changes to the side that beat Everton 1-0, with Craig Gardner coming straight back into the starting 11 after his two-match ban at the expense of James McClean, and Phil Bardsley replacing Jack Colback.

With both teams finding themselves firmly placed in the fight to avoid relegation, it was no surprise that the game started in frantic fashion, with both defenses fully involved in absorbing several early attacking movements, as well as dishing out a plethora of hefty challenges.

Sunderland has looked reinvigorated by the appointment of Di Canio as manager in recent weeks, but it was up against an equally determined Aston Villa side which carved out the first real chance of the game when Benteke and Agbonlahor linked up wonderfully with a beautifully worked one-two on the edge of the area, but Agbonlahor was unable to convert the opportunity as his shot not only beat Simon Mignolet but also narrowly beat the left post.

The narrow miss spurred on the Villa players to push for the opening goal, and just a few minutes later their pressure had paid off and they had the ball in the back of the net thanks to a 25 yard low drive from captain Vlaar which sailed through a sea of red and white shirts and past the helplessly outstretched limbs of Mignolet.

Sunderland replied immediately, however, and equalized just one minute and 48 seconds later when silky smooth play from Graham and Rose set up the latter to fire in from close range.

The frantic nature of the opening period wasn't over yet though, as Villa embarked on a swift counterattack after Matthew Lowton stole the ball off the advancing Sunderland midfield and unleashed a wonderful long ball to an unmarked Weimann on the edge of the box. The Austrian striker's first touch was exquisite and he was able to pass the ball into the far corner of the net to put the hosts ahead once again.

The second half started in a similar fashion to the first, with Aston Villa pushing for a third goal in the hope of securing the win, and it was duly rewarded nine minutes into the half when Benteke headed in to an open goal after Agbonlahor's deflected shot had been parried into his path by Mignolet.

Just five minutes later the big Belgian was on hand to head in once again, rising high above the Sunderland defense and nodding in Ashley Westwood's corner to put Villa 4-1 up and surely end any hopes Sunderland might have had of initiating a comeback.

Sunderland's hopes were ruined further by Sessegnon's dismissal after his stamp on Sylla after 71 minutes, and just a minute later Villa's top goalscorer picked up a stray touch from Cuellar and slotted the ball in between the near post and Mignolet's body to record his first hat-trick in Villa colours

With Sunderland dead and buried, Agbonlahor took advantage of poor defending to round Mignolet and score his side's sixth with just a minute of normal time left to play, putting the game to bed and wrapping up a win that is as important as it was emphatic.

Di Canio: Sunderland allowed complacency to creep in

    273748hp2.jpg

The Black Cats boss demanded that his side show more desire after "humiliation" at the hands of Aston Villa, which boosted its own survival hopes with a 6-1 victory.Sunderland manager Paolo Di Canio hopes his side's 6-1 hammering at the hands of Aston Villa serves to remind his players of their predicament after their two-game winning run was ended in emphatic fashion.

Di Canio had guided the Black Cats to victories over Newcastle and Everton that had boosted their hopes of Premier League survival but now lie above Villa only on goal difference.

The Italian boss believes one more win will secure the club's safety but demanded that his players come back down to earth quickly.

"It's a very bad defeat and our performance I'm not very happy about, obviously, but probably we thought the main job [of survival] was done," Di Canio told Sky Sports. "If the team has performed in this way, the first person responsible is the manager, and also the players, but the signals we probably didn't read in the week. Maybe this is a medicine in some way that can let us understand that we have to play with desire, commitment, otherwise we are going to have difficulty. This humiliation can help the players, the manager, the staff.

"We need a minimum of another three points. We can do it, but it was unacceptable the performance we made tonight. There was one team that played like it was the last chance of their life, which was Villa, and a team that was probably a little full in the stomach because of the last two wins in a row."

Sunderland was dealt another blow in the second half when Stephane Sessegnon was sent off for a challenge on Yacouba Sylla. The three-match suspension for a straight red card would rule the forward out for the rest of the season but Di Canio confirmed he would appeal the dismissal.

"We saw the clip and there is not a bad challenge," the former West Ham striker added. "In my opinion it wasn't a red card. I think once the referee has seen the clip he's going to realize the dynamic of the challenge can put him in difficulty.

"In reality, when you see the clip there isn't any intention to damage the opponent. The leg was not raised. We're going to appeal, of course."

Pirlo: I could have joined Madrid, Chelsea or Barca

    271286hp2.jpg

The Italy international spoke about how close he was to signing for some of Europe's leading clubs and tipped Clarence Seedorf to be a success at Milan - if he is offered the job Juventus midfielder Andrea Pirlo has revealed he may have signed for one of Chelsea, Real Madrid or Barcelona if not for the intervention of AC Milan president Silvio Berlusconi.

The 33-year-old ended a 10-year spell with Milan in 2011 and, prior to signing for Juventus, a decision he believes was the best of his career, Pirlo says he was not short of suitors keen to secure his services.

"I had already reached an agreement with Chelsea, then after Berlusconi intervened and I stayed at Milan. I was also very close with Capello at Real Madrid and nearly joined them in 2006," he explained in his autobiography.

"Guardiola then convinced me to join Barcelona in 2011, but Berlusconi stepped in again."

The former Milan playmaker added he was happy with the decision to sign for Juventus, but stressed his departure from the Rossoneri was born out of a desire to seek a new challenge.

"Surely it was the best decision of my career to sign for Juventus," he said. "Do I regret leaving Milan? I decided I needed a change. I needed to find new ideas and that was the best thing for both parties."

Clarence Seedorf has been touted as a potential successor to Massimiliano Allegri at Milan and Pirlo believes his former teammate is well-equipped to take the reins at San Siro.

"He is a great character, he has charisma and could do very well at Milan. But now he's still playing in Brazil, we will see when it stops," he added.

It is a career path Pirlo also harbors aspirations to follow, and he credited current coach Antonio Conte for inspiring him to one day swap life on the pitch for life in the dugout.

He said: "Thanks to Conte I got the urge of coaching and I thank him for that. We will see what happens in the future."

Pirlo could pick up his second successive league winners medal with Juventus as early as this weekend.

Heynckes: We won't park the bus against Barca

    268426hp2.jpg

The 67-year-old has said attack may be the best form of defense ahead of the meeting with the Blaugrana.

Bayern Munich boss Jupp Heynckes has ruled out the possibility of adopting a 'park-the-bus' approach for Wednesday's Champions League clash with Barcelona.

Die Roten go into the conclusion of their semifinal tie with a seemingly unassailable lead over their Spanish counterparts after their resounding 4-0 victory over Tito Vilanova's men in the first leg.

Despite the advantage Heynckes has insisted his team will look to pick up where it left off at the Allianz Arena - by scoring goals.

"We should defend with a high line and try to impose our playing style on them," he told the club's official website. "We need to try and score a goal or two, and it's a possibility. They'll press the ball from the start and try to put us under pressure."

Klopp: Balance is key for Madrid clash

    271804hp2.jpg

The 45-year-old coach is hoping to strike the right chord in Tuesday's Champions League semifinal second leg against Jose Mourinho's men to seal the club's final berth.

Borussia Dortmund boss Jurgen Klopp is hoping to strike the perfect balance between defense and attack against Real Madrid on Tuesday to ensure his team books its place in the Champions League final.

The Bundesliga giant faces the Blancos at the Bernabeu knowing a 4-1 aggregate lead makes the team an overwhelming favorite to progress to the final in May.

However, with Mourinho's men having an away goal, Klopp admits the outcome could depend on how he fares tactically.

"Real Madrid believe they can turn around the tie tomorrow and they will act accordingly. Their fans weren't happy with the first leg, and the team will have to set an example from the first second," the coach told reporters.

"We know about our qualities and we gave Madrid a lot of problems in the last three games against them. It won't be a solely defense-based game tomorrow, nor will it be an offense-focused one. Balance is key."

Despite preliminary reports suggesting Lukasz Piszczek could miss Tuesday's second leg through injury, the 45-year-old revealed the defender could still recover in time to face Madrid.

"I'm not sure if Lukasz will play, yesterday he did a little bit of running, but we will see tomorrow," he said.

PFA apologizes for 'wholly inappropriate' Reginald D. Hunter performance

    275983hp2.jpg

The American comedian used racial slurs during his act at the end-of-season awards ceremony, prompting outcry following a number of recent racism issues in the sport.

The Professional Footballers' Association has apologized for what it described as the "wholly inappropriate" performance of comedian Reginald D. Hunter during the annual end-of-season awards ceremony.

The American comic repeatedly used racial slurs during his set at the Grosvenor House hotel in Mayfair, as well as joking about Liverpool striker Luis Suarez - who was banned for eight games in December 2011 for racially abusing Manchester United's Patrice Evra.

Suarez, Evra, John Terry, Anton Ferdinand, Ashley Cole and Rio Ferdinand have all been involved in rows over the issue of racism in recent years, and the PFA has now condemned the tone of Hunter’s act.

"The PFA regrets the offense caused by the performance of Reginald D Hunter at last night's Awards ceremony in London," a statement read.

"We share the strong disappointment felt by our diverse membership at the choice of language throughout his appearance. We would like to make it clear that we feel any use of such language is wholly inappropriate."

The PFA went on to explain that Hunter was brought in with no knowledge that he would use the type of racially charged material that he ended up performing for the ceremony.

"He was booked on the basis of his recent television appearances however clearly his performance last night was of a very different nature," the statement continued. "Whilst we are not generally made aware of the material a comedian intends on doing, it is clear that the language used was unacceptable.

"In a conference call with Reginald and three members of The London Speakers Bureau through which he was recruited, it was outlined the makeup of our audience which would be widely diverse including around 25 percent of women and ages ranging from 18 to 80. It was made absolutely clear that swearing or any racist references were to be avoided. Therefore we were totally dismayed that the performance was the exact opposite of our requirement."

Tevez rules out summer return to Boca Juniors

    262170hp2.jpg

Despite his avowed adoration for his former club in his native Argentina, the Manchester City striker has revealed he will not be seeking a move back this summer.

Manchester City striker Carlos Tevez has ruled out a return to former club Boca Juniors this summer, despite admitting he "would die to return to Boca".

After a public falling out with manager Roberto Mancini in September 2011 that led to him being out of action until February 2012, Tevez has established himself again and has become a pivotal part of the City side.

Despite this, he has been linked with a move away from the Etihad Stadium this summer, and with former club Boca Juniors reported to be the likely suitor.

The Argentine has always been candid in his adoration for the club where he started his career and made his full professional debut when he was only 16, but he has revealed a move back to his homeland would be impossible at this stage of his career.

"I would die to return to Boca," he told Canal 9. "But it's very difficult at this moment. Who would pay the transfer fee? When I didn't play, City didn't want to transfer me to Milan for 20 million euros, so now that I am playing it's even more difficult.

"I will be back [in Argentina] at the age of 33."

QPR star Remy: The Premier League is the perfect league for me

    247409hp2.jpg

The Frenchman is adamant he does not regret moving from title-chasing Marseille to the Rs despite relegation, and believes England's top flight is ideal for him.
QPR striker Loic Remy has described the Premier League as the "perfect league" for him, and insists he does not regret moving to west London.

The Frenchman has scored five goals in 11 games since joining from Marseille in January for a club record fee of 9.5 million euros, and his impressive performances have caught the eye of many, including French national team coach Dider Deschamps, who recalled him to the squad for the first time since 2011.

Speaking to FIFA.com before his side's relegation to the Championship was confirmed, Remy admitted he was drawn to QPR due to the fact that it offered him a new and exciting challenge.

"I left because I wanted a different challenge, one that was tricky right from the start," he told the website.

"I joined QPR to give my all though, and my goal at the end of the season was not to have any regrets. I don't have any regrets about leaving and I'm happy in England. I'm playing in a league where I've always wanted to play, and I don't regret it."

When asked if he believes the Premier League is the place for a player like him, he said: "I feel like it is, in every way. You get less time to read the game in this league. There's more pressure and there's more contact, though there is more space too.

"It's great for a player like me. They play deep here and I like that. It feels like the perfect league for me."

AC Milan handed Bojan injury blow

    237013hp2.jpg

The on-loan striker could miss the Rossoneri's remaining four Serie A games - though his length of absence has yet to be confirmed.

AC Milan's Bojan Krkic has suffered a thigh injury that could end his season.

The extent of the injury will be announced in the next few days but it is clear that the 22-year-old will miss some, if not all, of the Rossoneri's push for Champions League qualification.

The former Barcelona player had been complaining of discomfort for a few days and both the club and player took to social media to announce the bad news after further investigation.

"The tests confirm a breakage to the quadriceps. I'll do anything to get back as soon as possible," tweeted the Spanish striker.

"Bojan Krkic has sustained an injury to his right rectus femoris," read a club statement on Twitter.

The former Barcelona player is at Milan on-loan from Roma but still has a buy-back clause in his contract for a move back to Camp Nou.

AC Milan sits in third place in Serie A with just a one-point cushion ahead of fourth-placed Fiorentina and takes on Torino at San Siro on May 5.
