Should Barcelona have kept David Villa?

This summer Barcelona sold David Villa whom they bought for £34.2 million three seasons ago from Valencia to Atletico Madrid for up to £4.4m (if certain conditions are met). This was mainly because he was not getting regular first-team football and Barcelona had signed Brazilian prodigy, Neymar for a hefty transfer fee.

On Wednesday, Villa put in a brilliant performance that he capped off by scoring a superb goal that he was involved in the build up. This fantastic display should not be used as a focal point for a knee jerk reaction about the striker, nonetheless, it has to be acknowledged that Barcelona’s plan B for a Messi injury is none other than Cesc Fabregas.

Admittedly, it can be argued that Neymar or Alexis Sanchez can play the centre forward role but the Barcelona system does not use a traditional striker, they use the 'false 9' position.

This position demands very specific techniques (passing and shooting mainly) from the player occupying it and even though quality players can attempt a performance in that role, very few actually thrive in it.

Bearing in mind that a midfielder is your sole back up plan, it has to be an incredibly risky tactic for the season. After the departure of Thiago Alcantara to Bayern Munich, Barcelona currently has a very thin squad that may prove to be insufficient for a whole season.

David Villa offered an alternative to Barcelona last season especially when they were facing tough UEFA Champions League opponents like AC Milan or PSG. Now, they don’t have any other player that can operate as a pure striker, this could be extremely detrimental when they face a negative side.

In the first leg of the Super Cup, Neymar and Fabregas came off the bench and the former was able to come up with the equaliser. However, for the next game, if both Neymar and Fabregas feature in the starting 11 as result of Messi’s injury.

Should they encounter a stalemate, the forwards on the bench (most likely Tello and Alexis Sanchez) won’t be able to offer any different approach from a tactical point of view.

The role that Villa played for Barcelona last season should not be underestimated, the ability to bring a varied attacking approach to a great team like Barcelona is something that ought to be valued:sorry::sorry::sorry::sorry::sorry::sorry::sorry::sorry::sorry::sorry:.

Willian to reject Tottenham and sign for Chelsea says Jose Mourinho

    willian-anzhi-makhachkala-football_2987804.jpg

Jose Mourinho believes Willian has chosen to join Chelsea rather than Tottenham after a late bid was made on Thursday.Willian had already undergone a medical ahead of a potential move to White Hart Lane when the Blues made their offer to Anzhi Makhachkala.

The Brazil midfielder, who is expected to cost whichever club he ends up at a fee of around £30m, started to create doubts over a move to Spurs when he revealed he was 'considering his options' after the medical.

Willian had been seen as something of a priority signing for Tottenham, who are still expected to see Gareth Bale leave before the end of the transfer window. He was targeted by Spurs boss Andre Villas-Boas when at Chelsea and had also been linked with Liverpool. When asked if Willian was about to join, Mourinho nodded and then said: "I think he's already made his decision.

"I don't like to speak before time because football can be crazy. I know what the player wants, so in this moment we cannot hide. That is a possibility.
"You have to do the medical before, but the best thing to do is to do the medical in secret. If the player is fine, you can sign him. If the player is not fine you don't destroy his career.

"Every one of us managers will say we are happy with our squad, but we are always unhappy. We always want something more, something of more quality and never close the door to the possibility of adding more quality."Before Aston Villa I told you we have Plan B and Plan C so I was letting the door open to other possibilities.

"I want a 22 player squad so if somebody comes, somebody leaves. Do we need to sell, no we don't. Do we need to loan, probably yes because I don't like to work with big squads. I like to work with a small group of players, and I say 22 is a perfect number for our needs in different competitions."

Mourinho was asked if speculation about Juan Mata's possible departure from Stamford Bridge was accurate, and he added: "No speculation. He is a player we all like, a player we all want to keep. We want more quality in the team, not less."

Speaking on Thursday night after Spurs had beaten Dinamo Tbilisi in the Europa League play-off tie, Villas-Boas conceded he knew nothing of his old club's interest in Willian.Villas-Boas said: "We were just involved in a game so unfortunately I can't give you further information.

"I confirmed our interest in the player. Everything is possible, but I'm not aware of the circumstances because of our involvement in the (Dinamo) game.
"I don't want it to be a distraction over what we achieved here tonight."

    :baffled:Moyes has transfer plans

    CED9DE0F4B9B462CBDE0DBDDCADB193F.ashx

Manchester United boss David Moyes says he is under no pressure to bring in any new signings ahead of the transfer deadline on 2 September.

The Reds manager addressed the media ahead of the Bank Holiday fixture against Chelsea and was inevitably asked about the latest on the window.
"There is a need to do it," explained Moyes, when quizzed on introducing new faces to the title-winning squad. "But there is no pressure to do it.

"It's something I'd like to do and we've been talking about it probably since I took the job on 1 July. But we won't do it because people like you tell us we should be signing players. "I have an idea of where I need to strengthen and, if the right players are available, then great. If not, the first thing we'll do is encourage our own young players in the squad to do as well as they did last year.

"There is a possibility [we won't sign anybody] but the plan is we bring in one or two if we can. I think there's value [out there] but we have only targeted certain players and don't have a big, big list. There are only certain quality players we want to bring to the club."

The manager also rebuffed another question regarding Chelsea's interest in striker Wayne Rooney ahead of Monday's game."We've told you, haven't we?" he asserted. "I hardly need to repeat it again. It doesn't need to be said."

:angry::angry::angry:Manchester United boss David Moyes won't be pressured into signing new players

David Moyes admits there may be no new signings at Manchester United in this transfer window.

Moyes is yet to make his first signing as United boss after seeing a joint bid for Everton pair Marouane Fellaini and Leighton Baines rejected on Monday.
And the former Toffees manager, who also failed to lure Cesc Fabregas from Barcelona, says he will not be pressurised into signing players.

"There is a need to do it but there's no pressure to do it," said Moyes.
"It's something we've been talking about it since I took the job on July 1.
"I have an idea of where I'd like to strengthen but we won't do it because people tell us we should be signing players."If the right players are available great, but if not the first thing we'll do is encourage our own young players in the squad to do as well as they did last year."

Moyes confirmed United have the funds to compete in the transfer market, saying: "Yes I do (believe there is value in the market). But we've only targeted certain players."We don't have a big, big list because there are only certain quality players we want to bring in to the club."

And, ahead of Monday's home game against Chelsea, Moyes again insisted that Wayne Rooney will not be moving to Stamford Bridge after two bids for the striker were rejected."We have told you haven't we," said Moyes. "I hardly need to repeat it again. It doesn't need to be said."

Meanwhile, Moyes confirmed full-back Rafael would be missing for "three or four weeks" with a hamstring strain. In addition, Nani (groin), Ashley Young (ankle) and Javier Hernandez (hamstring) will miss out against Chelsea as they recover from their respective injuries.

"Really they are coming back from the effects of not having a proper pre-season because they came back from international duty a bit late," said Moyes."Hopefully they are all not too far away now."

Napoli close in on Zapata signing

    304121_heroa.jpg

Napoli president Aurelio De Laurentis has taken to Twitter to announce the club are close to signing Estudiantes striker Duvan Zapata.

The Partenopei have made nine signings so far this summer, but new coach Rafa Benitez is continuing to spend the proceeds of Edinson Cavani's €63 million move to Paris Saint-Germain.

And the Colombia striker is set to become the club's 10th addition of the transfer window and join Gonzalo Higuain - who joined from Real Madrid in July - in a new-look forward line.

Speaking via his official Twitter account, De Laurentiis confirmed: "We have just closed the deal with Estudiantes for Zapata. The player is coming to Naples and will have a medical."

Zapata struck an impressive 20 goals in just 41 appearances for the Argentinian club after joining from America de Cali in 2011.

Last seasons Serie A runners-up kick-off the new campaign at home to Bolgna on Sunday, although the fixture will come too soon for Zapata to be involved.

El Shaarawy back to his best, warns Allegri

    277943_heroa.jpg

AC Milan boss Massimiliano Allegri has warned the rest of Serie A that Stephan El Shaarawy is back to his best on the back of a morale-boosting pre-season.

The Italy forward was the Rossoneri's stand out performer in the first half of last season, but his form dipped dramatically after Christmas following the arrival of Mario Balotelli.

Milan kick off their Serie A season with a trip to Verona on Saturday as they look to improve on last term's third placed finish and Allegri has backed El Shaarawy to fire once again.

"Stephan is doing much better at the moment, the two goals scored in Germany, the good performance in America and the midweek goal have been good for him psychologically," the 46-year-old told reporters at a press conference.

"He’s the same player he was last season. At 20 years of age, it’s not easy to find yourself under the media spotlight as he did last season.

"He hasn’t been up to his own high standards in the last two months but that just shows that in football, every day is a new test, especially in a team like Milan which always plays to win."

The San Siro side have been quiet in the transfer market this summer, bringing in Ferdinando Coppola, Simone Ganz, Rodney Strasser and Didac Villa, after missing out on primary targets Carlos Tevez and Keisuke Honda.

But Allegri insists he is happy with the squad at his disposal and says he is letting the club's hierarchy deal with transfer negotiations, while tipping one of the club's youngsters to make an impact.

He added: "That’s up to the club (transfers) and they know what they’re doing. [Andrea] Petagna is a young player but he can give us a hand. We hope to have [Giampaolo] Pazzini back for the end of October. He’s important for us.”

Allegri also revealed that Christian Abate will start on Saturday, with Mattia De Sciglio still not match fit, while Daniele Bonera and Jherson Vergara join Pazzini on the sidelines.

    Conte excited over new arrivals

    274117_heroa.jpg

Antonio Conte has revealed his excitement at seeing his trio of high-profile summer signings in action ahead of Juventus' Serie A curtain raiser against Sampdoria on Saturday.

The Bianconeri won the league title at a canter last season but have bolstered their ranks significantly with the acquisitions of Fernando Llorente, Carlos Tevez and Angelo Ogbonna.

The latter two of those three players were involved in last weekend's 4-0 Italian Super Cup win over Lazio and Conte says they have all adapted well to life at Juventus.

"I'm very happy with the three new signings, they've fit in well and will help us out a great deal," he told reporters at a press conference.

However, Juve's preparations for the defence of their league title have been hampered by an injury to midfielder Claudio Marchisio - who is set to miss over a month of action with a knee injury - and Conte was quick to emphasise his disappointment at the news.

"We'll definitely miss Marchisio, he's an important player. I hope everyone else will be available so I can have more options," he added.

Juventus start the campaign as firm favourites to retain their domestic crown, but with Napoli enjoying a fruitful summer of rebuilding under new boss Rafa Benitez and Vincenzo Montella's Fiorentina doing the same, the 47-year-old is predicting a tight battle.

He said: "It will be an extremely tough campaign, certain teams have significantly bolstered their ranks.

"We can't hide from the fact that we're favourites. But the favourites don't always win, we'll need to show we're the strongest."

    Blanc to wield PSG axe

    302169_heroa.jpg

Laurent Blanc has revealed he is preparing to wield the axe at Paris Saint-Germain in a bid to sanction another spending spree.

Edinson Cavani, Marquinhos and Lucas Digne have all arrived in the French capital for a combined fee of over €100m, and those arrivals have further swelled an already bloated squad.

The reigning Ligue 1 champions have stuttered to two draws from their opening two games of the campaign, leading to speculation that Blanc could make further signings - but he insists he is now focused on trimming down his side.

“It makes sense to let some players go so we may buy others. If this happens we still have time, but this is not going to happen today," the 47-year-old told reporters at a press conference.

Speaking ahead of his side's trip to Nantes on Sunday, Blanc also suggested PSG have not prepared well enough ahead of the campaign.

"After two matches the other teams look more prepared than us, but the league is long, our level will rise and I hope it will materialise in terms of play," he added.

The former France boss added that he is working on a ploy to get the best out of both Edinson Cavani and Zlatan Ibrahimovic, but says the overall function of the whole team is more important.

"We thought a lot about tactics. We must not only seek to make our strikers shine but it’s about finding a balance in the midfield and defence.

“We want to become more effective than what we currently are. Our preparation is not over. “

    Suarez resigned to Liverpool stay

    303237_heroa.jpg

Luis Suarez has accepted that he will not be permitted to leave Liverpool in the current window after the club's American owners told the Uruguay international they had no intention of honouring his contract's £40 million exit clause, Goal can reveal.

Fenway Sports Group are confident they have won the summer's most controversial transfer saga - despite reports of late interest from Real Madrid - but their victory may ultimately prove short-lived.

The club's treatment of Suarez has left the striker determined to force a move next year. Those who know the South American well insist there is no possibility of Suarez expressing his discontent with Liverpool's owners by underperforming on the field.

With Steven Gerrard also placing pressure on FSG to match their aggressive stance on their leading scorer with an equally bold signing, Suarez hopes the season will at least be shared with a stronger squad than has so far been assembled.

Whether that expectation proves realistic or not, the famously strong-minded striker is determined that a campaign forced upon him by men who reneged on "the club's word" will be his last in their employ.

"Luis will stay for another year," a close friend told Goal. "He is very annoyed; very disappointed with this. It makes the decision to leave next year even easier."

Despite a Premier League season in which he scored 23 goals in 33 appearances, Liverpool again failed to qualify for European football, and Suarez expected to be allowed a transfer.

Amid interest from stronger clubs last summer, he agreed to renew his Anfield contract solely on the condition that he would be permitted a move should the club fail to reach the Champions League.

A minimum price of £40m was agreed, with Suarez also receiving assurances that FSG intended to invest in a group of quality players capable of rendering the clause unenforceable by returning Liverpool to Europe's premier club competition.

Instead, Brendan Rodgers could only guide his new team to seventh-placed finish, 12 points off their target.

When Arsenal exercised the release clause with a late-July bid of £40,000,001, Liverpool made it clear that they would not be honouring the agreement, principle owner John W. Henry using Twitter to play to the Anfield crowd. "What do you think they’re smoking over there at Emirates?" Henry wrote.

Liverpool's argument was that the clause merely required them to open negotiations with a bidder, not to sell. What Suarez understood to be the spirit of the previous year's agreement was not to be respected, with the club initially floating a £50m price point, then indicating that they would not sell to a direct rival.

In the first week of August, Suarez granted an interview to a pair of UK newspapers, explaining why he felt entitled to a move. The next day, Henry responded with a public statement that there were no circumstances under which the striker would be allowed out. Not to Arsenal, nor to any overseas bidder.

"We are not going to sell Luis," Henry said. "It's very important, but especially for Liverpool because we're not in Europe this year.

"He won't be sold even if a foreign club comes in because we do not have time to sign a suitable replacement. It's not about finances. So late in the window we can't replace him. So for football reasons we can't sell, and especially to Arsenal."

While Real Madrid initially explored fulfilling Suarez's long-held ambition to play in Spain - planning to field him in a quarter-billion Euro attack alongside Cristiano Ronaldo, Karim Benzema and Gareth Bale - the club has been forced to focus on the headline signing of England's player of the year.

Tottenham's determination that the payment terms of that proposed €100m (£85m) deal include an unusually high percentage of up-front cash limited their ability to bargain for Suarez even before Henry's declaration that he is no longer for sale.

Funding a final-week offer for Suarez with the proceeds of Arsenal's mooted bid for Benzema is also a highly unlikely avenue. Not only is the France international the sole experienced centre forward in Madrid's new rebuilt squad, he is also a personal favourite of Florentino Perez.

Madrid's president drove the purchase of Benzema from Olympique Lyon for an initial €35m (£30m) following his re-election in 2009. Perez then pushed for the striker to remain in the team's starting line-up despite a comparatively mediocre return of 88 goals in 184 Madrid appearances.

When Gonzalo Higuain was beset by a serious back injury in the 2010 winter window, Jose Mourinho even found himself prevented from recruiting a centre forward on loan in a move that maximised Benzema's playing time.

Suarez is understandably aggrieved by FSG's behaviour, yet his respect for Liverpool's support and the ferocity of his competitive spirit is such that he has vowed not to let disappointment affect delivery on the pitch.

Though the Americans have forced a compromise upon him, for Suarez the matter is far from over.

Redknapp: Tottenham will not pull plug on Bale transfer

    307930_heroa.jpg

QPR manager Harry Redknapp says that Tottenham's sale of Gareth Bale to Real Madrid is "a certainty to happen" and cannot see chairman Daniel Levy pulling the plug.

Reports emerged on Friday morning that the Spurs chief might cancel the proposed world-record transfer following Chelsea's attempt to hijack the north London club's move for Anzhi Makhachkala attacker Willian

A deal taking the Brazilian to Spurs looked set to be completed on Thursday after the player had passed a medical but the Blues have moved late - though Redknapp insists that his former club have spent too much this summer to give up the revenue that Bale would bring.

"That's a certainty to happen," the QPR boss told TalkSPORT. "Now they've spent all that money there's no way they'll pull the plug on that deal.

"And the boy wants to go. We all know that for a fact."

Tottenham have spent almost million this summer on four new signings, breaking their transfer record twice, and Redknapp believes that they have a squad capable of challenging for the title.

"Tottenham have bought some fantastic players," he added. "You look at their squad and there is no reason why they can't be challenging to win the league.

"It really is a fantastic squad they have put together."
