Michael Owen: You float like you are an angel out on to that pitch. The Bernabéu is the best stadium in the world. I felt like a king.

It is the history, the tradition, the sheer scale of the place.
When I moved there in 2004, I walked into the stadium and felt the history and expectation. I walked into the trophy room and was reminded of Real’s great history. I went into the dressing room and saw all these famous players, my new team-mates. It is special. Gareth will love it.

But this is Real Madrid we are talking about. Before I went there, Jamie Carragher said to me: “Oh, you’ll never get a game, Ronaldo will be playing, Raul will be playing.” My answer was simple: “But it’s Real Madrid.”

    Bundesliga celebrates its 50th birthday

    308716_heroa.jpg

Saturday marks the 50th anniversary of the Bundesliga, which has firmly established himself as one of the game's greatest domestic competitions over the past half-century.

August 24, 1963 witnessed the first ever Bundesliga match, between Werder Bremen and Borussia Dortmund. Timo Konietzka had the honour of scoring the first ever goal, putting BVB ahead after just a minute of action, but Bremen would ultimately prevail, 3-2.

Perhaps, then, it was apt that the two sides who kicked off the Bundesliga would meet again almost 50 years to the day to start the celebrations. However, it would be Dortmund's fans who would be cheering the loudest this time around, following a 1-0 victory over Bremen on Friday night that came courtesy of a solitary strike from Robert Lewandowski.

The Pole, though, has some way to go before he can think about catching the Bundesliga's all-time goalscorer Gerd Muller, whose renowned predatory instincts saw him rack up 365 goals - a top flight record that does not look like getting beaten any time soon, with Claudio Pizarro, the only player still playing today in the top 10 all-time list, currently on 166 goals.

'Der Bomber' was part of the supremely successful Bayern Munich side which won four German league titles between 1969 and 1974, not to mention three European Cups in the 1970s. And it is die Roten who have claimed the most titles, with a grand total of 22, with closest rivals Dortmund and Borussia Monchengladbach sharing five a piece.

Bayern seemed to have broken all sorts of records last season in an unprecedented treble-winning campaign under Jupp Heynckes, including most points won in a season, but there are still some records which remain.

Somewhat surprisingly perhaps, BVB were on the receiving end of the heaviest defeat in Bundesliga history, losing 12-0 to Gladbach during the 1977-78 season, while a special mention must go to Hamburg for having competed in all 50 seasons of the Bundesliga.

I hope Cristiano Ronaldo scores an own goal, says El Arabi

    280282_heroa.jpg

Granada attacker Youssef El Arabi hopes that Real Madrid ace Cristiano Ronaldo will score another own goal in the upcoming Primera Division encounter between the two sides.

The Portugal forward gifted the Andalusians a shock 1-0 win at los Carmenes in February when he beat his own goalkeeper with a stunning header.

Unsurprisingly, El Arabi would love to see Ronaldo net again at the wrong end in Monday's match.

"I hope that Cristiano Ronaldo scores another own goal," the Morocco international told AS when reminded about last year's encounter.

"Real Madrid are a great team and they have a lot of strong individual players.

"However, we hope to get a draw or even win the game."

Madrid recorded a 2-1 win over Betis in their Liga opener last weekend, while Granada beat Osasuna by the same scoreline.

Casillas could leave Madrid for Barcelona, believes Canizares

    291864_heroa.jpg

Former Real Madrid goalkeeper Santiago Canizares says Iker Casillas should consider leaving the Santiago Bernabeu side for Barcelona.

The Blancos captain lost his starting berth to Diego Lopez last season while Jose Mourinho was still at the helm, and is also seemingly second choice under new coach Carlo Ancelotti.

Consequently, Canizares would not the discount the possibility of Casillas departing for Camp Nou before the close of the transfer window.

"I don't see any problems if he were to leave Madrid for Barcelona," Canizares told Cadena SER. "At Barcelona - and anywhere else in the world - he would get the recognition he deserves.

"What matters most is your job and if you can't do it at your current club, you will have to look elsewhere. If I were Casillas, I would start thinking about leaving Madrid. This situation is not normal.

"The current situation at Madrid is very uncomfortable for both goalkeepers. I have never thought that having two great shot-stoppers at one team was a good idea. Casillas is always the centre of attention at the moment."

Casillas has a contract with Madrid until June 2017.

Hamburg move for Arsenal outcast Bendtner

    238653_heroa.jpg

Hamburg have lodged a €3 million bid with Arsenal for out-of-favour forward Nicklas Bendtner.

The Bundesliga outfit are keen to hold talks with the Danish forward, who has long been surplus to requirements at the Emirates Stadium and has been told he can find a new club.

However,Bendtner is only willing to leave Arsenal for a club who will match or exceed his current €58,000-a-week wage.

The 25-year-old has already rejected offers from five different clubs this summer, including Malaga and Frankfurt, after failing to agree personal terms.

Bendtner, whose Arsenal contract runs until 2015, is no longer part of Arsene Wenger’s plans and has been completely frozen out by the manager.

However, the Gunners have had difficulty selling him over the last two years following unproductive season-long loans at Sunderland and Juventus.

Arsenal would prefer to sell Bendtner rather than loan him out again and have placed a €3m valuation on the player.

Hamburg have already taken Gunners defender Johan Djourou on loan this summer, though he has not yet played for the club.

Buffon desperate for Champions League glory

    307087_heroa.jpg

Gianluigi Buffon is desperate to win the Champions League with Juventus before the end of his career, after missing out on the trophy in 2002-03.

The Serie A champions made it to the quarter-finals of European club football's elite competition last season, where eventual winners Bayern Munich proved to be too strong, and the Bianconeri skipper is eager to go all the way this campaign.

"Winning the Scudetto is obviously something that never stops satisfying you, but there's no denying that the Champions League is something else. It is not a competition you win easily," Buffon told TG1.

"I already got to the Champions League final in 2003 and I really did not enjoy the experience of losing.

"What would I give to win the Champions League? Let's say I have six or seven years left to play, I'd happily give three or four years of my career to win it."

The draw for the Champions League group stages takes place in Monaco on August 29.

Milan more efficient than PSV, says Gullit

    287070_heroa.jpg

Former Netherlands star Ruud Gullit has outlined the difference in football philosophy between AC Milan and PSV in the wake of the first leg of their Champions League qualifier earlier this week, heaping praise on the Serie A side's greater efficiency.

The Eindhoven outfit dominated for large parts of Tuesday's encounter at the Philips Stadion and got a number of chances to record a crucial home win, but they eventually had to settle for a 1-1 draw, with Tim Matavz cancelling out Stephan El Shaarawy's opener.

"I really enjoyed the Champions League qualifier between my former clubs PSV and Milan," Gullit wrote in his column for De Telegraaf.

"It was clear to see how they have different philosophies. PSV were fun to watch, while Milan were all about efficiency.

"The defence is sacred in Italy and that reflects in attackers' mentalities. They know that they get only one chance and have to convert it. That's part of their attitude.

"Stephan El Shaarawy showed just that in Eindhoven."

The decisive return leg takes place at San Siro on August 28.

    Rangel fears Soldado threat

    308870_heroa.jpg

Swansea full-back Angel Rangel believes the Capital One Cup holders must quell the threat of Roberto Soldado if they are to take anything from their trip to Tottenham on Sunday.

The Spain international made the switch from Valencia to north London for a club-record €30 million fee earlier this summer and has already bagged three goals in his first two competitive games for Spurs.

And Rangel is in no doubt that the 28-year-old will present a major threat to his side's chances of bouncing back from their 4-1 defeat to Manchester United in their Premier League opener last Saturday. "He has started so well at Spurs and has scored in every game," the former Terrassa man told the South Wales Evening Post.

"He has a great reputation in Spain and he is getting better and better with every season, and from what I have seen he can score from so many positions.
"He is a proper striker who was one of the best in Spain.

"Going to a different league and scoring in the first few games is going to give him a big boost and build his confidence."

Messi ruled out of Malaga clash

    308328_heroa.jpg

Barcelona coach Gerardo Martino has revealed that Lionel Messi will not be available for Sunday's meeting with Malaga at the Rosaleda.

The prolific attacker picked up a knock in Wednesday's Supercopa de Espana game versus Atletico Madrid and was taken off at half-time as a consequence.

Messi underwent further examination on Thursday, revealing bruising to his left thigh, and Martino has now revealed that he must skip the trip to Andalusia.

"We are pretty optimistic about Messi's recovery. He's not in the squad as a precaution, because we don't want to take any risks at this stage of the season," the Barca coach stated at a press conference.

The 26-year-old netted twice in Barcelona's 7-0 victory over Levante on the opening weekend of the new season, but won't be adding to his tally this weekend.

New signing Neymar is likely to make the starting XI for the first time in an official game on account of Messi's absence, with the Brazil international netting his first competitive goal for the club against Atletico in midweek.

Moyes urges Martinez: Let Baines & Fellaini leave

    308302_heroa.jpg

David Moyes has called for Everton to "do what is right" for Marouane Fellaini and Leighton Baines and let the pair speak to Manchester United.

The Premier League champions had an initial £28 million (€32.6m) joint bid for the midfielder and left-back rejected, and then described as "derisory and insulting" by the Toffees.

However, United have made an improved offer of £35m (€40.8m) for the pair, and Moyes believes it will be difficult for Roberto Martinez to prevent Fellaini and Baines from leaving Goodison Park.

"I definitely do [sympathise with Roberto Martinez]," Moyes told reporters. "But I also know that if I was the Everton manager and Sir Alex [Ferguson] had come asking for Baines and Fellaini, I would have found it very difficult to keep them.

"I always felt the right thing to do was what was right for the players. All we can do is our job here.

"Roberto is in a new job and I am sure he will get to understand how Everton work. I know exactly how Everton work. I signed every player at Everton.

"I respect Everton greatly and I don’t want to do anything that would in turn affect them. Of course, taking their players would affect them but I am certainly only doing what I have to do in my job."

Moyes spent 11 years in charge at Goodison, after joining from Preston North End in 2002.

Arsenal transfer fate could be in Suarez's hands, hints Wenger

    306684_heroa.jpg

Arsene Wenger has suggested Arsenal's transfer business in the remaining days of the window could be dictated by Liverpool striker Luis Suarez.

The 26-year-old forward had been a target for the Gunners this summer but their bids for his services proved unsuccessful, as the Anfield outfit refused to sell to a domestic rival, with the Uruguayan now resigned to staying on Merseyside.

Arsenal have since switched their attention to Real Madrid frontman Karim Benzema, but, as los Blancos' only senior striker, last term's Liga runners-up would need a replacement before letting the Frenchman leave.

The arrival of reported Madrid target Suarez at the Santiago Bernabeu, however, could free Benzema to move to north London, a chain reaction Wenger has acknowledged.

“That's part of the fact you need three agreements for anybody,” the French boss told reporters. “It's true that it is sometimes connected with other clubs. But we have to accept that.”

Wenger, who has made only one signing so far this summer in Yaya Sanogo on a free transfer, remains adamant Arsenal will strengthen before the end of the window.

“We have our targets, we will try to achieve that and I am confident we will get there,” the 63-year-old continued. “We will not go into the new season with only the number of players we have.”

Although Arsenal's move for Benzema hinges on Madrid securing a replacement, a deal for Argentine winger Angel Di Maria is thought to be more advanced.

Chelsea have made an offer for Anzhi striker Samuel Eto’o, reveals agent

    154752809.jpg

Eto’o, who is currently the highest paid player in the world, has been told he is free to leave Anzhi as they try and cut their wage bill.

Inter Milan and Genoa have since made moves to sign the 32-year-old, but according to his agent Vigorelli, Chelsea are also in for the striker.‘Chelsea have a clear club policy of not signing players over 30,’ Claudio Vigorelli told Il Giornale.

‘I spoke to Jose, who was willing to give Samuel a one-year contract.’
However, despite the offer, which is thought to be worth £6million to Eto’o, Vigorelli went on to say the transfer would only happen if the Blues fail to sign Wayne Rooney.

‘Mourinho only has him in mind and is waiting for the situation with Manchester United to find a breakthrough.’Mourinho has already confirmed he will make a new bid in the coming days for Rooney, thought to be worth £40million.If it does happen, a deal for Eto’o is likely to happen, while Chelsea are also keen on Porto striker Jackson Martinez as another ‘Plan B’ option.
