Real Madrid set stage for Bale presentation

    ay_116838531.jpg

Real Madrid expect to reach an agreement with Tottenham for Gareth Bale imminently and have already set the stage for the winger's unveiling at the Santiago Bernabeu.

Madrid's offer currently stands at a potential world record £86 million (€100m), and although Spurs chairman Daniel Levy is holding out for £93m (€108m), the Spanish club have already prepared a special balcony on which they will parade their latest galactico.

Both clubs expect the deal to be completed within the next few days, and Tottenham are actively pursuing replacements.

They had been on the brink of signing Brazilian attacker Willian from Anzhi Makhachkala, only to be gazumped by Chelsea at the 11th hour, though a deal for Roma star Erik Lamela is progressing.

Madrid have chased Bale all summer, and although initial reports suggested that they would only make a move next year, they lodged an official offer at the end of July.

They are now supremely confident of landing the double PFA Premier League Player of the Year winner, andhad already given the game away by listing 'Bale 11' replica shirts on their official website.

Although the club have prepared the special balcony to welcome Bale, the unveiling will not compare to those of Cristiano Ronaldo, Kaka or Karim Benzema, which featured a grand stage on the Bernabeu centre circle.

Sampdoria 0-1 Juventus: Tevez fires Bianconeri to opening day win

    309132hp2.jpg

Carlos Tevez scored his first league goal for Juventus as the Bianconeri opened their Serie A campaign with a 1-0 win over Sampdoria.

The striker - who joined from Manchester City earlier this summer - found the net just before the hour mark to give Juve all three points at the Stadio Luigi Ferraris.
Antonio Conte handed a league debut to Tevez, with the Argentinian partnering Mirko Vucinic in attack, while Paul Pogba started in midfield in the absence of Claudio Marchisio.

Juventus came close to taking the lead after just two minutes, when Andrea Pirlo's superb long-range strike was tipped over the bar by Brazilian goalkeeper Angelo Da Costa.

Sampdoria responded well, pressing Conte's men back into their own half, but they could not take advantage of that period of supremacy and almost fell behind when Da Costa produced another fine save as Kwadwo Asamoah met a Pirlo corner with a powerful diving header.

The visitors attacking quality was evident, and Sampdoria were again grateful for the reflexes of Da Costa as he denied Tevez his first goal in Italian football with a great stop at the near post.

Asamoah fired a swerving effort over the bar from the edge of the area seven minutes before the interval, but despite an array of chances the Bianconeri were left frustrated as they failed to find a breakthrough before half-time.

But on 57 minutes the visitors sprung back into life in spectacular fashion. Vucinic, Arturo Vidal and Pogba combined excellently in a wonderful team move, with the latter pulling back for Tevez to tap into an empty net with Da Costa stranded.

However, the hosts nearly crafted an instant response, as defender Andrea Costa converted from an in-swinging free-kick only for the assistant referee to disallow the goal for offside.Pogba, afforded too much time and space by Sampdoria, continued to exert his influence on the game, and he was heavily involved again as Juventus looked to close the game out, crossing for Stephan Lichtsteiner, only to see the Swiss head wide.

Juve took their foot off the gas in the dying embers of the game, with Sampdoria lacking the ability to turn the deficit around.

And the game ended on a sour note for the hosts, with substitute Paolo Castellini sent-off for a lunging tackle on Lichtsteiner to extinguish any hope of a late comeback.

Aston Villa 0-1 Liverpool: Sturridge strike enough for Reds to maintain perfect start

    309056hp2.jpg

Daniel Sturridge's rich vein of form continued as his excellent first-half strike gave Liverpool a 1-0 Premier League win over Aston Villa. Sturridge's goal – his eighth in his last seven league matches – was all that separated the two sides on Saturday as Liverpool made it two wins from as many matches to start the new season.

In a fixture where both sides struggled to assert themselves, Liverpool's win saw them make their best start to a Premier League season since the 2008-09 campaign, in which they finished second. The triumph also extended their superb run at Villa Park, as they notched their 10th win at the venue since 1998.Of the other six clashes, five have ended in draws, with Liverpool's latest triumph their third in succession.

Close-season signings Jores Okore and Leandro Bacuna were drafted into Villa's starting line-up by manager Paul Lambert, in place of Ciaran Clark and Karim El Ahmadi, while Liverpool were unchanged, although new loan signing Aly Cissokho won a place on the bench.Neither side could find their rhythm in the opening stages, as the contrasting styles made for a cagey beginning, but Liverpool settled first.

Villa seemed content to give their opponents time on the ball and attack on the counter, playing into the hands of the visitors, and although they could not create a clear opening, Liverpool controlled the tempo with ease.

It took a piece of individual brilliance for Liverpool to take the lead, as outstanding footwork and a calm, composed finish from Sturridge delighted the travelling fans in the 21st minute.

The build-up was relatively innocuous, as a Jose Enrique ball from the left floated into the penalty area, but a smart dummy from Philippe Coutinho allowed Sturridge in.And the in-form striker showcased his skill with a series of delicate touches to take the ball around Villa defender Antonio Luna, and goalkeeper Brad Guzan, before he poked into the top corner with the outside of his left foot from an acute angle.

In a half where chances were few and far between, Villa were continually frustrated by Liverpool's consistent defensive shape, but they did go close in the 41st minute when Christian Benteke's curling effort forced a terrific save from goalkeeper Simon Mignolet.Villa finished stronger in the first half, as Andreas Weimann saw his shot deflected over, but Liverpool were well worth their lead at the break.

The second half started much like the first, with both sides struggling to convert possession into chances, and although Villa had more of the play, all they had to show for it initially was two Ashley Westwood efforts that went well over.Villa's attacks slowly became more frequent and Benteke powered a header over from a corner, but Liverpool – who brought on Cissokho for his debut late on – continued to hold firm.

Gabriel Agbonlahor and substitute Aleksandar Tonev went close with left-footed efforts as the hosts continued to press, while Mignolet made an excellent stop to deny Benteke after he broke free in the penalty area.

But Liverpool - who could have won a late penalty when Sturridge was felled in the area by Guzan, only for referee Mark Clattenburg to wave away the appeals - held on for an important three points as their perfect start to the season continued.

Hellas Verona 2-1 AC Milan: Toni double seals huge shock

    309055hp2.jpg

Veteran Hellas Verona striker Luca Toni scored twice as the newly-promoted outfit shocked AC Milan in the opening match of the Serie A campaign.

Andrea Poli seemed to have the visitors on course for three points when he struck after quarter of an hour but Toni replied either side of half-time to give the underdogs an unexpected victory.

Andrea Mandorlini made three changes from the side that defeated Palermo in the Coppa Italia last weekend.

Romulo, Bosko Jankovic and Fabrizio Cacciatore all came in at the expense of Alessandro Agostini, Daniele Cacia and Jacopo Sala.

Massimiliano Allegri named four changes from the side that drew 1-1 with PSV Eindhoven in midweek.

Kevin Constant, Antonio Nocerino, M'Baye Niang and Poli all came in to the side in place of Kevin Prince-Boateng, Nigel De Jong, Urby Emanuelson and Sulley Muntari.

Riccardo Montolivo had the first effort of the game, firing just over from outside the box in the second minute.

Mario Balotelli then went close as he saw his shot well saved by Rafael low to his right.

Poli opened the scoring after 14 minutes, running on to Balotelli's pass before slotting past Rafael.

Balotelli continued to threaten for the visitors, as the striker saw a well-struck free-kick dip just too late to trouble the goalkeeper.

Verona's first effort on target came midway through the half as Raphael Martinho's volley from distance was comfortably held by Christian Abbiati.

But despite having failed to significantly test their visitors, the hosts drew level with 30 minutes on the clock.

Toni met a corner from the right with a thumping header beyond Abbiati from six yards.

The striker went close to giving his side the lead five minutes later, but this time the goalkeeper was down smartly to his right to parry the shot.

Toni was again on target as the half drew to a close, rising to meet Jankovic's cross, but his header lacked the power to seriously trouble Abbiati.

Jankovic went close to giving Verona the lead early in the second half, but his firm header from Martinho's free-kick was tipped over the bar.

They did not have to wait long, however, as a minute later Toni nodded them in front from Jankovic's perfectly weighted cross using the outside of his right boot.

Balotelli then had a close-range effort blocked after Philippe Mexes had made a mess of an attempted overhead kick when it looked simpler to head the ball towards goal.

As Milan pressed, Verona broke swiftly and Abbiati had to fly to his left to cut out Martinho's cross-shot in the 65th minute.

With the game entering its final stages, Balotelli tested Rafael with a curling effort from distance and Domenico Maietta was forced to clear over his own crossbar, but Milan could create no further chances as Verona held on for the win.

Bayern Munich 2-0 Nurnberg: Robbery saves Alaba's blushes

    308940hp2.jpg

Pep Guardiola’s perfect Bundesliga record remains intact as his Bayern Munich side saw off Nurnberg 2-0 at the Allianz Arena.

Franck Ribery scored the opening goal of the game after 69 minutes and Arjen Robben was on target shortly afterwards, though David Alaba had earlier missed a penalty kick for the Bavarian outfit.

Guardiola handed starts to close-season signings Mario Gotze and Thiago Alcantara for the clash at the Allianz Arena, with Gotze making his debut. Nurnberg coach Michael Wiesinger kept Hiroshi Kiyotake on the bench.

Bayern unsurprisingly controlled the opening stages of the game, keeping possession from their Bavarian neighbours with ease as they probed for the opening goal.

However, it was the visitors - who have not won at Bayern for 21 years - who almost broke the deadlock against the run of play after 15 minutes as Daniel Ginczek’s thunderous strike was tipped onto the crossbar by Bayern goalkeeper Manuel Neuer.

Wingers Ribery and Robben both threatened for Bayern in glimpses, and the home fans thought they should have been awarded a penalty in the 24th minute. Mario Mandzukic was bundled over by Marvin Plattenhardt, but the hosts’ protests were waved away by referee Felix Zwayer.

Bayern did not have to wait long for a penalty though as the official pointed to the spot seven minutes later after Robben was brought down while chasing a through-ball.

However, David Alaba’s weak effort from 12 yards was saved comfortably by goalkeeper Raphael Schafer.

The home side continued to dominate all aspects of the match after the break but for all their attacking intent, struggled to break down the stubborn Nurnberg defence.

Mandzukic’s aerial ability offered a major threat for Bayern as they began opting for a more direct approach. A powerful header from the Croatia international almost opened the scoring shortly before the hour mark as Guardiola’s side continued to pile on the pressure.

The Spaniard introduced Thomas Muller and Toni Kroos from the bench as Bayern looked to up the tempo and Muller was inches away from converting Robben’s searching pass shortly after.

However, a sense of relief was felt throughout the stadium as Ribery finally got the breakthrough for the hosts in the 68th minute. With Wiesinger’s men camped on the edge of their own area, a pinpoint Philipp Lahm cross allowed the France international to accurately guide a header past the helpless Schafer.

And Robben then sealed the three points nine minutes later with a fine solo effort. The Netherlands international coolly slotted the ball home from close range after jinking past three defenders down the right wing.

Fulham 1-3 Arsenal: Podolski double helps Gunners to victory

    308929hp2.jpg

A Lukas Podolski double helped relieve the pressure on Arsene Wenger as Arsenal eased to a comfortable 3-1 win at Fulham on Saturday.

The Germany international scored one in each half after Olivier Giroud had opened the scoring early on, before Darren Bent grabbed a late consolation for Martin Jol's men after coming off the bench for his home debut.

Fulham boss Jol made three changes from his side's 1-0 win at Sunderland, handing a debut to new signing Scott Parker and also bringing in David Stockdale in goal and John Arne Riise at left-back.

His under-fire Arsenal counterpart, meanwhile, opted to rest Jack Wilshere in favour of Podolski, while also making two enforced changes in selecting Carl Jenkinson and Santi Cazorla in place of the suspended Laurent Koscielny and the injured Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain.

Both sides started patiently amid torrential rain and it was Arsenal who carved out the first clear-cut chance of the game after 10 minutes when Theo Walcott was denied by Stockdale after latching on to a superb through-ball from Tomas Rosicky.

But the visitors did not have to wait long to edge ahead, as Giroud opened the scoring just four minutes later. There was an element of good fortune about the goal as Aaron Ramsey scuffed a shot from 20 yards that caught the striker's heel and ran perfectly into his path.

However, the France international still had plenty to do and he deftly lifted the ball over the advancing Stockdale for his second Premier League goal of the campaign.

Fulham responded well to that setback, though, and Wojciech Szczesny was forced to make an outstanding double save from Adel Taarabt and Damien Duff shortly afterwards.

The hosts continued to press for an equaliser but were served a warning of Arsenal's potency on the break when Walcott sprinted clear down the right and teed up Kieran Gibbs, only for the full-back to drag his shot wide.

Walcott was again heavily involved as the visitors doubled their advantage four minutes before the interval. Stockdale saved the England forward's shot well after he had been played in by Cazorla but Podolski followed up with an unerring side-footed finish from 18 yards to send the visitors in two goals to the good at the break.

Fulham flew out of the traps with real intent in the second half and Szczesny saved smartly from Taarabt's drive just two minutes after the restart.

But Arsenal were again dangerous on the break and Ramsey almost added a third in the 57th minute after Walcott had nodded Gibbs's deep cross back to the Welshman, but his shot was deflected wide.

That proved to be a precursor for the third goal, as another slick counterattack led to Wenger's side increasing their advantage on 68 minutes. The ever-dangerous Walcott was again key, as he fed Cazorla down the left. The playmaker then rolled the ball back to Podolski on the edge of the area and the Germany international took a touch before arrowing a shot into the bottom corner.

Substitute Bent gave the hosts a glimmer of hope nine minutes later with a typical poacher's finish after Szczesny had parried Dimitar Berbatov's clever half-volley but Arsenal held on to complete their sixth consecutive away Premier League victory.

    Tevez ecstatic after 'perfect night'

    309109_heroa.jpg

Juventus striker Carlos Tevez has admitted he had enjoyed the "perfect night" after scoring on his debut in the 1-0 win over Sampdoria in front of his former Manchester City boss Roberto Mancini.

The pair had endured a tempestuous relationship together at Manchester City before leaving the club this summer, with Tevez enjoying a fine start to life in Italy.

"I didn’t know Mancini was in the stadium. We have kept up a good rapport," the 29-year-old told reporters after the match.

"I'm really happy here but it's not easy to slot into a new playing system, it takes time. Tonight was perfect though: a goal and a win.

"I'm pleased because it was no easy feat coming here and doing that at such a difficult ground."

Juve boss Antonio Conte then praised his new signing's work ethic and emphasised how all of his new recruits will get better in the coming weeks as they get more game time under their belts.

"A lot has been said about him but he's certainly not afraid of putting in the hard work," the Italian commented shortly after.

"I'm not happy with a striker who's static. Tevez not only offers us quality up front but he helps out defensively too.

"Tevez has scored twice already but he's also made a huge contribution to the team – that's something all my players have always done.

"The more time passes, the more comfortable Carlos, Fernando [Llorente] and Angelo [Ogbonna] will be. They're putting a lot of effort and it's not easy, but these are top players we're talking about."

Simeone dismisses Demichelis & Adrian rumours

    308175_heroa.jpg

Diego Simeone has shrugged off rumours linking Martin Demichelis and Adrian with the Atletico Madrid exit door.

Demichelis only moved to the Vicente Calderon in July but is understood to be keen to reunite with his former Malaga boss, Manuel Pellegrini, at Manchester City.

Highly-rated attacker Adrian has also been linked with Arsenal, Valencia and Roma, but Simeone insists the rumours are not affecting his preparations for the season.

"I don’t care about the rumours, my only concern is Rayo," the 43-year-old told reporters. "We are constantly holding conversations with the club and we are very aware of what might happen.

"But my only worry is tomorrow’s game and making my team is able to perform against a very brave side packed with players who play good football.

"That’s what we need to be alert to, nothing else."

Atleti drew the first-leg of the Supercopa against Barcelona 1-1 on Thursday and Simeone has called for his charges to embrace team rotation as they aim to juggle all competitions this season.

"It’s quite possible that there will be changes," he explained. "There are a lot of games ahead and everyone will have a part to play.

"I have been very clear with my players and I told them that they shouldn’t be surprised to see a player in the stands one week and in the starting XI the following week.

"My team is constructed to get through each game as best as we can."

Oliver Torres and Cristian Rodriguez will miss the clash with Paco Jemez's men, but Diego Costa shrugged off a sprain to team up with the squad.

Conte: Pogba can be world's best

    307083_heroa.jpg

Juventus coach Antonio Conte is confident Paul Pogba will eventually become the world's best player, after the prodigy helped his team to a 1-0 win at Sampdoria on Saturday.

The hosts stifled the Italian champions to good effect in a dour encounter, but Pogba popped up with the vital assist for league debutant Carlos Tevez to net the winner.

And Conte has hailed the growing maturity of his prodigy, stating there is no limit to his potential.

"Pogba is a modern player, as he is strong, fast and has stamina," the 44-year-old told reporters after the match.

"He’s also humble, so listens to the advice given by me and by his team-mates. We started working on him a year ago and his progress has been incredible.

"I saw his interviews in which he said he wanted to become the best in the world. I am happy with that, because in my view he can be the best."

Pogba looks set for an extended run in the first team following Claudio Marchisio's knee injury, which is likely to leave him sidelined for a month, and the midfielder paid tribute to his team-mates for aiding his progress.

"I feel like I have improved a lot especially playing with the likes of [Andrea] Pirlo, Arturo [Vidal], [Giorgio] Chiellini and now Tevez.

"We are strong mentally. We are Juve and we always want to win."

The young France international scored five goals in 37 official appearances for the Italian champions last season.

Pellegrini promised €58m transfer kitty if Manchester City make Champions League knockout stage

    307500_heroa.jpg

Manuel Pellegrini has been promised a €58 million January transfer kitty if Manchester City progress from the Champions League group stage this season, Goal understands.

The Etihad Stadium outfit have failed to reach the knockout stage of the competition in two consecutive campaigns and were unable to secure a single win last term, finishing bottom of their group behind Borussia Dortmund, Real Madrid and Ajax.

However Pellegrini, who guided Malaga to the last eight of the competition last season, will see his January budget bolstered by the club's hierarchy should he improve on City's recent continental performances.

The club hierarchy are determined to see Pellegrini's men position themselves as a powerful European force, and were impressed by the Chilean's impressive continental record with Malaga and former club Villarreal before appointing him to replace Roberto Mancini in June.

Sources close to the club have revealed that City will sanction a significant January spending spree in order to strengthen the depth of the squad, with the club aiming to fight on four fronts in the new year as they attempt to regain the Premier League title from Manchester United.

Club officials are also hoping to target players from clubs who fail to progress from the group stages should City qualify, with the defence having been highlighted as an area where the club could look to improve.

City have spent over €104m this summer, adding Fernandinho, Jesus Navas, Alvaro Negredo and Stevan Jovetic to the squad which finished 11 points behind champions United last term.

Despite being happy with the club's summer business, Pellegrini has admitted that City may look to make a further signing before the end of the transfer window on September 2.

"I’m very happy with the squad we have but if we think it’s important we need another player we’ll see next week," said the Chilean earlier this month.
