    luissuarezagainstmanchesterunited_576x324.jpg

Long-time rivals Manchester United and Liverpool have been drawn to play each other at Old Trafford in the third round of the Capital One Cup.

The Premier League giants were the first clubs out in the draw and the match could mark Liverpool forward Luis Suarez's return to action after a 10-match ban.The 26-year-old was handed a 10-match suspension after biting Chelsea defender Branislav Ivanovic last season.Eager to leave Liverpool this summer at one point, it now looks like he may be staying, and his return would obviously add extra interest to an already intriguing tie.

League One Swindon knocked out Championship QPR on Tuesday night and the Robins have been rewarded with a glamorous home tie against Chelsea, while Bristol City, who saw off Crystal Palace, will be away at Southampton.Swansea lifted the Cup last season and they have been handed a potentially tricky tie at Championship side Birmingham.

Aston Villa will be at home to Spurs while other all-Premier League ties are West Ham against Cardiff, West Brom v Arsenal and Fulham-Everton.Manchester City have been drawn at home to Wigan and Newcastle's home tie with Leeds could be an interesting encounter.

Capital One Cup third round draw:

    Man Utd v Liverpool
    Sunderland v Peterborough
    West Ham v Cardiff
    Man City v Wigan
    Burnley v Nottingham Forest
    Newcastle v Leeds

Tottenham spending poised to surpass £100m as Gareth Bale saga draws close to conclusion

    gareth-bale-bench-wales-republic-of-ireland-international-friendly_2994016.jpg

Tottenham are poised to eclipse Manchester City as the summer's big spenders as Gareth Bale finally nears the exit.Bale is on the verge of completing his protracted move to Real Madrid for a world-record £86m fee but Spurs boss Andre Villas-Boas is closing in on three transfer targets to collectively strengthen his squad.

Deals are in place for Roma forward Erik Lamela and Steaua Bucharest centre-back Vlad Chiriches, who have both arrived in London ahead of medicals, while chairman Daniel Levy is in talks with Ajax over a £9m move for Christian Eriksen.

Lamela's arrival, for a fee rising to £30m, would see Tottenham break their transfer record for a third time this summer following the £17m and £26m outlays for Paulinho and Roberto Soldado, respectively. But their overall spend during this window would surpass £100m, beating the figure of around £90m that Manuel Pellegrini has forked out at Manchester City.

There could be an acrimonious end to the Bale saga after Villas-Boas criticised the winger's conduct with his next move still to be sealed."He is involved in a big transfer to Real Madrid and, if it happens, we wish him all the best, but the fact that he hasn't turned up is not the correct behaviour," Villas-Boas said after Bale missed a second day of training.

"I gave the player the weekend off. Monday was a day off for the squad. It is up to the club now to decide if it's a fineable offence. I've given my opinion on it, it's up to them to decide whether they act on it or not."One player out of Spurs' reach is Chelsea's Juan Mata with Villas-Boas admitting he's a fan of the midfielder.

But the Portuguese coach believes Chelsea would be unwilling to strengthen the squad of a fellow top-four contender - meaning Spurs have turned their attention to Lamela and Eriksen. On Mata, Villas-Boas said: "Mata is a great player - player of the season last season, a very important player for Chelsea."But Chelsea wouldn't sell to Tottenham in any way, as they think we are title contenders.

"They're just not going to strengthen another team that, in their opinion, are rivals for the title."

Everton manager Roberto Martinez slams transfer window after Baines reports

    Norwich4_2988579.jpg

Everton manager Roberto Martinez has refused to be drawn on the future of Leighton Baines - but has called for changes to the transfer window - which he has branded a "footballing circus".

Reports in the press claim that Baines is keen to be re-united with former Everton boss David Moyes at Manchester United - leading Martinez to question where the stories were coming from."I speak with all the players," he told Sky Sports News. "So it's disappointing when get so many stories going around and you do question where they are coming from.

"But there's nothing to comment on and we'll carry on waiting until the window shuts."But with midfielder Marouane Fellaini also being strongly linked with a move to Old Trafford and only five days of the transfer window remaining, Martinez finds the situation less than ideal.

"It's getting a little too much at the moment," he added. "It's not just here, it's up and down the league, in every dressing room - I think we need to do something."I am sure the authorities will look at it and do something about it because it is becoming a bit of a footballing circus and it is not helping anyone.

"Unfortunately it is the reality of the game. I do feel a bit worried about it. It is not getting easier and it is not getting better."Martinez did not rule out the prospect of losing two of his best players - but insists the club have plans in place to deal with every eventuality.

"You always need to make sure when the window closes, the squad is stronger than it was when you started," he added."That doesn't mean you will never lose players. It means you need to be prepared for any situation."That is what we are focusing on for the next four days in the window.

"There is a lot of speculation and stories, but once you have important games to prepare for, it is a bit of a farcical position that goes against the values we are trying to present in the Premier League."

    Eto'o poised to join Chelsea

    samueletoostands20130224_576x324.jpg

Samuel Eto'o is set to complete his transfer to Chelsea from Anzhi Makhachkala, according to widespread reports in the British media.

Chelsea are thought to have targeted Eto'o -- who will cost around £5 million, according to the Guardian -- after admitting defeat in manager Jose Mourinho's pursuit of Manchester United forward Wayne Rooney.Mourinho worked with Eto'o during their time together at Inter Milan, lifting a famous Serie A, Coppa Italia and Champions League Treble in 2010.

Eto'o left Inter for Anzhi in 2011 in a deal that reportedly made the Cameroon international football's highest paid player. It is claimed the 32-year-old will take a significant pay cut to sign for Chelsea, with a 12-month contract, that The Sun reports will earn him £100,000-a-week, set to be penned.

"There is only one Jose Mourinho. I have played under a lot of great coaches - but there is no other character in the game like Jose," Eto'o was quoted saying in the Daily Mail on Aug. 12.Anzhi's owner Suleiman Kerimov recently announced his intention to reduce the club's spending, and the sale of Willian to Chelsea was confirmed on Wednesday.

Willian has inked a five-year deal at Stamford Bridge after the Blues moved for the Brazilian following interest in the player from rivals Tottenham.

Ozil: I do not fear Bale competition

    299429_heroa.jpg

Mesut Ozil has insisted that he does not have any problems with the imminent arrival of Gareth Bale at Real Madrid and is relishing the competition for places.

Madrid are expected to complete the signing of the 24-year-old Tottenham star for a world record transfer fee of €100 million shortly and Ozil has made it clear that he will welcome the Welshman with open arms.

"At Real Madrid, we are happy with every player who strengthens the team. That's why I do not have any problems with the signing of Bale," the Germany international was quoted as saying by Bild.

"There's always competition for places when you play at a big club like Real Madrid. I know how to deal with it. I will never leave a club due to the stiff competition for places.

"This is my fourth season at the club and I have always been a regular. I know exactly what I'm capable of. I feel the coach's faith and I have no doubt that I will be a regular again."

Ozil, 24, then went on to discuss his long-term future at Madrid and stressed that he will at least stay at the Liga giants until the end of his current deal.

"I can guarantee that I will fulfil my contract until 2016 here," he said. "Obviously, I don't know what will happen after that."
