:(Manchester United 1-2 West Brom: Baggies stun champions to pile pressure on Moyes

    322464hp2.jpg

West Brom earned their first victory over Manchester United in 29 years as they claimed a 2-1 win at Old Trafford on Saturday.

Steve Clarke's side had not beaten United since a 2-0 success in March 1984, but set about correcting that stat as Morgan Amalfitano ended a delightful dribble with a chipped finish early in the second half.

And, though Wayne Rooney levelled things up from a free-kick shortly afterwards, substitute Saido Berahino restored the visitors' advantage before they held on manfully to claim all three points.

With his side looking to get their Premier League title push back on track following last week's 4-1 defeat to Manchester City, David Moyes made seven changes to his team.

Chicharito was given another chance to impress after scoring the winner in the Capital One Cup victory over Liverpool in midweek, while Robin van Persie was forced to settle for a place on the bench having missed the last two games with a groin injury.

Steve Clarke, meanwhile, handed starts to Victor Anichebe and Claudio Yacob in place of Nicolas Anelka and James Morrison respectively, but the West Brom boss was forced to reshuffle his team yet again just 13 minutes into the match.

Berahino was thrown into the fray, with the 20-year-old forward replacing the injured Scott Sinclair in attack.

And he was unfortunate not to score just a few moments after coming on, as he nodded an inswinging cross from the left just wide of David de Gea's post.

A few minutes earlier, Chicharito had gone close to turning home Nani's cross from the right.

Anderson went even closer with half an hour on the clock, as he struck the crossbar with a header from close range before smashing the rebound hopelessly over the top.

Stephane Sessegnon had the best chance before the break, but the Benin international failed to control a side-footed effort following a flick-on from a corner as he shot high and wide.

United were forced into a change at the break, as youngster Adnan Januzaj was introduced in place of Shinji Kagawa, with the Japan international presumably having picked up an injury during a promising first-half performance.

And things soon went from bad to worse for the hosts, as Amalfitano opened the scoring eight minutes into the second half.

The Frenchman simply walked through the United defence after picking the ball up in a deep position and, after shrugging off Rio Ferdinand, he had the presence of mind to produce a dinked finish that gave De Gea no chance.

The sight of Robin van Persie preparing to enter the fray moments later would almost certainly have given West Brom’s defence plenty of food for thought, but United levelled matters before the Dutchman even got onto the pitch.

Rooney's inswinging free-kick from the left-hand side deceived everyone in the box, finding the net without the need for a team-mate's touch.

Most inside Old Trafford would have expected the champions to cruise to victory after getting back on level terms, and introducing Van Persie, but the visitors rallied superbly and took the lead again in the 67th minute.

Berahino was the scorer for West Brom, the youngster lashing a beautifully weighted Amalfitano lay-off to the edge of the box beyond De Gea with his left foot.

West Brom defended brilliantly as the inevitable United push for an equaliser gained steam with the clock ticking down, but they had Marouane Fellaini's poor judgement to thank for avoiding conceding five minutes from time.

The Belgian pushed forward needlessly before Nani squared to provide a tap-in, with his celebrations cut short by the assistant referee's flag.

The visitors subsequently held out to claim a famous win, their first at Old Trafford in 34 years.

Aston Villa 3-2 Manchester City: Weimann completes dramatic turnaround

    322466hp2.jpg

Leandro Bacuna and Andreas Weimann left Manchester City stunned as Aston Villa twice came from behind to record a remarkable 3-2 victory.

Fresh from netting nine goals in a week against Manchester United and Wigan Athletic, City were in dominant mood in the first half on Saturday but had to wait for Yaya Toure's sixth strike in eight games to put them ahead in its final minute.

Having failed to muster a shot on target before the break, Karim El Ahmadi produced a clinical finish to haul Villa level amid strong suspicions of offside in the 51st minute.

Edin Dzeko glanced in from Samir Nasri's corner to restore City's advantage five minutes later but Bacuna lashed home a stunning free-kick for his first Villa goal after Matija Nastasic fouled Weimann.

And Nastasic and Vincent Kompany were caught napping as Weimann stole in to beat the on-rushing Joe Hart with a 75th-minute winner.

In the injury absence of forward duo Christian Benteke (hip) and Gabriel Agbonlahor (ankle), Villa manager Paul Lambert handed a first start to last weekend’s match-winner at Norwich City, Libor Kozak, and reverted to a 5-3-2 formation.

Sergio Aguero picked up a knock after firing a derby day brace last weekend, meaning Dzeko partnered Alvaro Negredo in attack. Elsewhere, Jesus Navas dropped to the bench to accommodate Villa old boy James Milner in the City midfield.

And Milner had the game's first opening in the third minute, lashing wide left-footed after Dzeko dummied a low cross from Aleksandar Kolarov.

Continuing the impressive form he showcased six days ago, Samir Nasri was at the hub of an impressive start by the visitors.

First, a cute through-ball allowed Dzeko to slide in on the angle and draw a save from Brad Guzan before the France international fired narrowly wide from the edge of the box having led a swift counter-attack.

Dzeko failed to get on top of a good headed chance from a 14th-minute corner and City proceeded to dominate the opening half hour without again testing Guzan.

City's pressure continued largely unchecked but they were undermined failing to consistently find a quality final ball until the half’s outstanding player intervened at its conclusion.

After watching Ciaran Clark clear off the line and Nathan Baker deflect his fierce drive wide, Toure crowned a typically dominant display from midfield by steering Nasri’s corner through Guzan’s legs.

Negredo and Kolarov threatened as City began the second period at a furious place but Manuel Pellegrini's team would soon rue their profligacy.

El Ahmadi collected Bacuna's wonderfully weighted pass to fire home low across Hart as the linesman's flag stayed down.

But as they did from their ninth corner, City netted from their 10th to ensure parity lasted only six minutes.

Dzeko made the most of a static Villa defence to glance Nasri's in-swinging delivery past Guzan and the USA international got down well moments later to keep out a thunderous Negredo volley.

Ring-wing crosses from Zabaleta and Navas – introduced in place of Nasri – invited further punishment that did not arrive from Dzeko but just as Villa looked to be entering survival mode they stunned City again.

Villa Park was in raptures following Bacuna's heroics and the noise levels were further ramped up as Weimann lifted Villa up to ninth in the table - only a point behind City in fifth.

Almeria 0-2 Barcelona: Seven out of seven for the Blaugrana

    322504hp2.jpg

Lionel Messi scored his eighth La Liga goal of the season before coming off injured in Barcelona's 2-0 win over Almeria on Saturday.

The triumph ensured that Gerardo Martino became the first Barcelona coach to win his first seven league games, but it came at a cost as their star man was forced off with a thigh strain eight minutes after opening the scoring in the first half.

Almeria offered no attacking threat in the second period at Estadio de los Juegos Mediterraneos and left-back Adriano capitalised to add the second after the break.

The hosts went into the match as the only side currently in La Liga to have never beaten Barcelona in the top flight.

Coach Francisco replaced Sebastian Dubarbier with Christian Fernandez as he plotted a way to end that run.

The Blaugrana eased to a 4-1 win over Real Sociedad last time out and Martino made three changes from that success.

Javier Mascherano, Xavi and Neymar missed out as Marc Bartra, Cesc Fabregas and Pedro came in.

The first 20 minutes were dominated by the champions, but they found breaking through Almeria's well-organised back line troublesome.

However, a moment of magic from Messi in the 21st minute gave Barcelona the lead.

The Argentine cut in from the right and fired a left-footed strike in off the far post, but his day would soon end in disappointment as the attacker was withdrawn, though he did manage to walk off the field.

Almeria created two good openings towards the end of the first half as Angel Trujillo nearly connected with Suso's inswinging free-kick and then former Barcelona B forward Rodri hit a stinging shot at Victor Valdes.

Barcelona appeared more focused at the beginning of the second half and Alexis Sanchez almost doubled their lead as he broke through on goal, but goalkeeper Esteban produced an excellent tackle.

The visitors were more clinical next time, however.

Fabregas got down the left side and played a low cross into the danger area for full-back Adriano to poke past the helpless Esteban in the 54th minute.

Another defender, Bartra, was involved in the very next attack and after a surging run through the middle, he laid the ball off to Pedro who hammered a shot just wide of the left post.

Adriano had a chance to get his second 13 minutes from time, but the Brazilian could only put his effort wide, while Barta should have got Barcelona's third when he missed the target from close range.

AC Milan 1-0 Sampdoria: Birsa strike lifts pressure on Allegri

    322595hp2.jpg

AC Milan climbed to eighth in the Serie A table thanks to a much-needed 1-0 win over Sampdoria at San Siro on Saturday.

The Rossoneri, who have struggled for consistency this term, took the lead over the Genoese outfit thanks to a long-range effort just after the break from Valter Birsa.

And the Slovenian's proved to be enough for Massimiliano Allegri's men to claim just their second league victory of the season.

Milan made two changes from Wednesday's 3-3 draw in Bologna, with Cristian Zaccardo and Sulley Muntari replacing Ignacio Abate and Antonio Nocerino respectively.

The visitors also made two alterations from their midweek fixture, as Vesco Regini and Angelo Palombo came in for Daniele Gastaldello and Nenad Krsticic.

After a quiet opening to the game, Milan fired the first warning shot in the 17th minute when Kevin Constant ran on to Robinho's floated pass and fizzed a first-time volley just wide of the left-hand post.

Seven minutes later, the home side went close again as Valter Birsa curled a 25-yard free kick just over Angelo Da Costa's crossbar.

For all the home side's dominance, it was Sampdoria who came closest to opening the scoring in the 26th minute when Andrea Costa met a left-wing corner with a header that shaved the right-hand upright.

And just two minutes later, Manolo Gabbiadini fired a 30-yard strike over Christian Abbiati's crossbar as the game began to open up.

Shortly after the half-hour mark, Sampdoria were indebted to Shkodran Mustafi for keeping the game level, the defender throwing his body at Muntari's goalbound volley to delfect the ball over the crossbar.

Philippe Mexes also went close for the hosts soon afterwards, just failing to get a meaningful connection on the ball as Birsa's free kick from the left found its way to the back post.

Milan made a dream start to the second half with a goal in the first minute, Birsa collecting Robinho's pass on the edge of the box before picking his spot and passing the ball beyond Da Costa from 20 yards

Milan should have been further ahead two minutes later as Robinho got on the end of Andrea Poli's cross six yards out, but his stabbed effort fell into the grateful arms of Da Costa with the goal gaping.

The home side were dominating proceedings, but squandered another golden chance in the 63rd minute when Alessandro Matri, clean through on goal, saw his weak effort saved by the legs of the Sampdoria goalkeeper.

Five minutes later, Matri was again denied a certain goal by another superb Mustafi block 10 yards out. In the final 10 minutes, Gianluca Sansone wasted a good opportunity to equalise, blazing his shot over after a rare foray forward from Sampdoria.

Substitute Mbaye Niang almost made the game safe in stoppage time, Da Costa tipping his low effort round the post, but it mattered little as Milan held on to seal the points.

Tottenham 1-1 Chelsea: Torres red mars Terry-led comeback

    322413hp2.jpg

Fernando Torres was sent off as Chelsea came from behind to draw 1-1 with Tottenham at White Hart Lane.

Gylfi Sigurdsson had opened the scoring after 19 minutes in a first half dominated by the hosts, only for Juan Mata's half-time introduction to inspire Jose Mourinho's charges to salvage a point through a John Terry header.

With Chelsea looking to complete the comeback, Torres was dismissed for a second bookable offence eight minutes from time after clashing with Jan Vertonghen - although TV replays hinted that the striker could feel aggrieved.

David Luiz partnered John Terry in the heart of defence, with Gary Cahill dropping to the bench, while Frank Lampard took the place of Andre Schurrle and Torres started ahead of Samuel Eto'o in attack.

Tottenham were unchanged from their Premier League victory over Cardiff City, leaving Jermain Defoe on the bench, despite scoring twice in their midweek Capital One Cup win over Aston Villa.

After a series of half-chances for both sides, Tottenham began to assert their dominance, taking the lead through Sigurdsson after 20 minutes.

The in-form midfielder got his third Premier League goal of the season, latching onto a lay-off from Roberto Soldado before breaking Terry’s weak tackle and calmly finishing past Petr Cech.

With Chelsea reeling, the hosts continued to enjoy plenty of possession, with Kyle Naughton next to test Cech with a long-range effort.

The visitors eventually found their feet in a 10-minute period before the break, Eden Hazard threatening with a deflected strike before Oscar fired straight at Hugo Lloris.

Tottenham could have gone in at half-time two goals up with Brazilian midfielder Paulinho hitting the outside of the post after being played in by Andros Townsend.

Oscar was unable to get a firm enough touch on a Torres cross two minutes into the second half in what was a frantic period of play after the break.

Hazard was the next to test Lloris a minute short of the hour mark before Terry levelled the scores.

Substitute Mata delivered an expert free kick with the Chelsea captain, who had evaded the attentions of Michael Dawson, glancing a header past Lloris after 65 minutes.

Torres then played in substitute Schurrle but the German was denied by Lloris, before the Spain international was dismissed nine minutes from time.

After a long-running battle with Vertonghen, Torres was shown a second yellow card following an aerial challenge with the Belgian defender.

However, despite plenty of pressure from the home side, they were unable to take advantage of their extra man during the final eight minutes.

Swansea City 1-2 Arsenal: Gnabry and Ramsey send Gunners two points clear at the top

    322521hp2.jpg

Aaron Ramsey scored his eighth goal of the season as Arsenal moved to the top of the Premier League table with a 2-1 win at Swansea City.

Ramsey's hot streak of form – which has seen him score five goals in his last four matches – continued in his native Wales as Arsene Wenger's men won their fifth Premier League game in a row.

After an uninspiring first half, Ramsey set up German youngster Serge Gnabry for the game's first goal in the 58th minute.

And the former Cardiff City midfielder produced a composed finish himself just a few moments later as Arsenal recorded their eighth Premier League away win in succession.

With a lengthy injury list, Arsenal – who are missing the likes of Santi Cazorla, Theo Walcott, Lukas Podolski and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain – made nine changes from the side that beat West Brom on penalties in the League Cup on Wednesday, retaining only German pair Gnabry and Per Mertesacker.

Swansea saw their defence of the League Cup end at Birmingham City in midweek, and they kept just four players in their team, recalling Spanish star Michu, although they were without injured defensive pair Ashley Williams and Angel Rangel (both ankle).

Jonathan De Guzman and Jonjo Shelvey both fired over in the early stages for the hosts while Ramsey shot wide from distance, but despite both sides enjoying good spells of possession, they failed to penetrate in a dull first half that saw neither produce a shot on target.

Arsenal goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny was almost caught out after a heavy touch played in Michu, but an offside flag avoided further embarrassment for the Polish goalkeeper, while a De Guzman free-kick was blasted over in an effort that summed up the first 45 minutes.

The visitors should have scored in first-half stoppage time though, with an excellent Gnabry run finishing with Olivier Giroud, but the Frenchman, who had gone down with an ankle injury a few moments earlier, dragged his effort wide. The second half started slowly, with Szczesny forced to charge off his line to deny Michu, but Arsenal won the game thanks to four minutes of brilliance.

The lively Gnabry opened the scoring just short of the hour, making the most of a neat Ramsey flick to slot a cool finish beyond Swansea goalkeeper Michel Vorm and into the bottom corner.

Mesut Ozil nearly doubled Arsenal's lead less than a minute later but saw his near-post effort saved by Vorm, before a counter-attack that ended with Ramsey saw the Welshman maintain his scoring run.

An excellent team move that also involved Jack Wilshere and Giroud saw the latter cut back for Ramsey, and the goalscorer took a touch before smashing an effort into the top corner to delight the travelling fans.Nathan Dyer forced Szczesny into a terrific save as Swansea pressed for a goal and defender Ben Davies gave them a lifeline with eight minutes to play.

The left-back ran forward and played in substitute Wilfried Bony, and Davies followed his run, collecting Bony's lobbed pass and finishing beyond Szczesny.
It was a terrific goal but time ran out for Swansea, as Arsenal won again ahead of a mouth-watering UEFA Champions League clash against Rafael Benitez's Napoli on Tuesday.

Ramsey will get even better - Wenger

    322558_heroa.jpg

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger feels that there is still more to come from Aaron Ramsey after he fired his club to another win on Saturday.

The Welshman's outstanding start to the season continued as he scored one and set up another in the Gunners' 2-1 triumph at Swansea City, taking his tally to eight goals in nine club appearances this season and moving his side two points clear at the top of the Premier League.

When quizzed about the 22-year-old's performance, a delighted Wenger told Sky Sports: "Much like the team, he had a difficult start but he became stronger. He had an outstanding second half and scored again. What can you say?

"There's still a lot of improvement to come from him."

Wenger also hailed the efforts of German youngster Serge Gnabry, who made the most of the absences of wingers Theo Walcott and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain to produce a terrific performance, including the opening goal.

"He is 18 years old," the Frenchman added. "Early quality on the pitch is what he is showing. We are giving him confidence and he had another good game."

The Gunners boss felt that his side were distinctly average in the first half but was pleased with their response, explaining: "The first half was quite difficult. I felt we were a little bit slow in our combinations and Swansea were a little sharper than us.

"[In] the second half we were much stronger. We took advantage of the chances we created. We have substance in the team and you could see that in the second half. We came out with purpose and won the game. That was important.

"Our spirit has been tested after the first home game [losing to Aston Villa] and, the way we responded, it is very positive."
