Inter chief: No contact with Hernandez or Torres

    373383_heroa.jpg

Inter owner Erick Thohir has denied that his team have been in talks with Javier Hernandez and Fernando Torres about luring the Premier League strikers to San Siro.

Goal understands that Valencia and Atletico Madrid are one of several clubs interested in signing the Manchester United forward, with the Red Devils willing to sell, and the Nerazzurri have been linked with the Mexico international as well.

Torres, who has often struggled since his £50 million move from Liverpool to Stamford Bridge, is also expected to leave in the summer but Thohir is adamant that neither men have been approached.

"At the end of the season we will evaluate everything, both the young players and the more experienced ones, because we want to build a strong squad for the future with a view not just to next season but to the next three," he told the press.

"I think Hernandez is a good player but we haven't spoken to either him or Fernando Torres."

Inter have already secured the signature of veteran centre-back Nemanja Vidic from United, with the Serbian heading to Serie A upon the expiry of his contract at the end of the season.

Kroos hints at summer Manchester United move

    371207_heroa.jpg

Bayern Munich midfielder Toni Kroos has fuelled further speculation about his future as he admitted "much is possible" this summer, as he continues to be linked with Manchester United.

David Moyes is believed to be keeping tabs on the Germany international as he plans an overhaul of his underachieving squad in the summer.

With the Premier League champions currently lagging in sixth place - 11 points off the top four - the United boss is keen to make his mark in the upcoming transfer window, and Kroos has offered hope a deal could be struck.

Speaking before the second leg of Bayern's Champions League last-16 tie with Arsenal - which they lead 2-0 - Kroos hinted he might be willing to join a club outside of the Champions League next season.

"Much is possible," he told reporters when asked if he would be willing to forgo the chance to play in Europe's elite club competition next season.

When the subject of his future was raised, Kroos said: "I have noticed that a lot has been written about it. There's nothing new. No decision has been made. There's no agreement.

"That will stay that way until the summer, then a decision will be made. It's no secret the Premier League is an interesting league."

Kroos has made 22 Bundesliga appearances this season, scoring once and providing four assists.

Atletico Madrid 4-1 AC Milan: Costa double fires Colchoneros into quarter-finals

    377628hp2.jpg

Two goals from Diego Costa helped fire Atletico Madrid into the quarter-finals of the Champions League with a 4-1 win over AC Milan.

Diego Simeone's men, who won the first leg 1-0, triumphed at the Vicente Calderon as goals from Costa and Arda Turan sandwiched Kaka's close-range header in the first half.Raul Garcia and the Spain striker's second added further gloss to the scoreline inside the final 20 minutes, with the home side good value for the win.

It took the hosts just three minutes to double their first-leg advantage. Koke curled a sublime cross towards the far post and Costa showed great athleticism to divert a side-footed volley past Christian Abbiati.Milan settled into the encounter after a lacklustre start and were back in the tie on 27 minutes with the equaliser on the night.

The ball was spread wide to Andrea Poli and he stood up a pin-point cross to the back post where Kaka headed home from close range. The Brazilian then missed a clear chance to put Milan ahead on away goals, as he leapt to meet Adel Taarabt's centre, but succeeded only in heading over from six yards.

That miss proved costly as Turan restored Atletico's lead in fortuitous circumstances five minutes before the break. The Turkey international's volley took a huge deflection off Daniele Bonera before looping over Abbiati and nestling in the bottom corner.Raul Garcia nearly made it three on the stroke of half-time with an acrobatic free-kick that went just wide.

Atletico started the second half in the same swift fashion that they had started the first and captain Gabi smashed a 20-yard effort against the crossbar on 48 minutes.Shortly after the hour mark, Costa held up a ball from the byline and Miranda headed straight at Abbiati from eight yards.

The pressure finally told when the tie was put beyond all doubt 20 minutes from time, as Raul Garcia rose high to nod Gabi's free-kick into the bottom corner.
Robinho went close to reducing the deficit when he cracked an effort against the crossbar, but there was still time for one last piece of action as Costa fired across goal and into the bottom corner in the 85th minute to seal a resounding win for Atletico.

Bayern Munich 1-1 Arsenal (3-1 Agg): Podolski strike not enough as Gunners bow out

    377616hp2.jpg

Bayern Munich stayed on course to become the first side to retain the Champions League by claiming a 1-1 draw to ease past Arsenal.

The holders dominated much of Wednesday's round-of-16 second leg at the Allianz Arena and, despite being unable to secure a deserved win on the night, they progressed 3-1 on aggregate following their first-leg victory in London.

Arsenal beat Bayern 2-0 in the second leg at the same stage of the competition last year but a repeat performance never looked likely and Bastian Schweinsteiger put Pep Guardiola's side in front early in the second half.

Arsene Wenger urged referee Svein Oddvar Moen to give his side a fair chance before the match and the Norwegian official did just that by allowing Lukas Podolski's equaliser to stand after he appeared to push Philipp Lahm shortly after Schweinsteiger's opener.

Lukasz Fabianski, stepping in for the suspended Wojciech Szczesny, saved Thomas Muller's stoppage-time penalty after Laurent Koscielny upended Arjen Robben but the tie was all over by then.

The Bavarian giants progressed on away goals against Wenger's men just over 12 months ago but this was a far more comfortable victory and Bayern were left to dream of becoming the first team since AC Milan in 1990 retain their European crown.

Guardiola had called on his side to be positive and deprive Arsenal of possession and they adhered to his orders in the opening stages, with Schweinsteiger forcing Fabianski into an early save with a long-range drive.

Bayern were dictating the play and Javi Martinez found the back of the net with a volley 26 minutes in but the Spaniard was correctly flagged for offside, then Laurent Koscielny was well positioned to get in the way of the lively Robben's shot.

Arsenal were struggling to contain the hosts by that point and Fabianski had to be alert to keep out Mario Gotze's shot as they weathered the storm to keep Bayern at bay until half-time.

Mesut Ozil was replaced by Tomas Rosicky at the break due to a tight hamstring and Bayern picked up where they left off but Moen rightly waved play when Robben went down theatrically after bursting into the penalty area.

It appeared to be only a matter of time before Guardiola's team went in front and the opening goal duly arrived 10 minutes after the break when Ribery was afforded too much time to pick out Schweinsteiger and the midfielder finished clinically.

Bayern were only in front for two minutes but had every right to feel aggrieved with Podolski's equaliser after their former player appeared to push Germany team-mate Lahm before beating Manuel Neuer at his near post with a vicious left-footed strike.

Mario Mandzukic was then too casual when presented with a great chance to put Bayern back in front and Fabianski was alert to the danger.

Szczesny's deputy then stopped Muller's stoppage-time spot-kick after Koscielny had brought down Robben but that was never going to prove costly as Bayern cruised through.

Courtois: Atletico Madrid could stun Bayern

    377420_heroa.jpg

Thibaut Courtois says Atletico Madrid are good enough to stun Champions League holders Bayern Munich if they are drawn against the Bundesliga side in the quarter-finals of the competition.

The Belgium international, who is on loan at Atletico from Chelsea, played an important role as los Colchoneros eased into the last-eight after beating Milan 4-0 in the Vicente Calderon on Tuesday (5-1 on aggregate).

And Courtois is confident his side will put up a good fight against any opponent they meet in the quarter-finals - even reigning European champions Bayern.
He said:"Bayern are so strong now, they are winning everything in Germany. But we can play any team now and they will suffer in the Vicente Calderon.

"Hopefully we can move on to semis, but there are still many games ahead.”

The goalkeeper was asked if there was anything in his loan deal which prevented him from playing against his parent club should they meet in the next round.
"I do not think I have a clause not to play against Chelsea. It would be a great game," he added.

The youngster's promising displays have seen him linked with a move to Real Madrid in recent weeks, but he dismissed the rumours as a way for people to unsettle him and his temporary employers.

"I do not think Chelsea will sell me," he said after beating AC Milan 4-1 with Atletico. "I have a contract for two more years.

"It is all press talk, just to destabilise us, but we are focused on our football and on doing our job."

    Wenger slams 'diver' Robben

    377639_heroa.jpg

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has branded Bayern Munich winger Arjen Robben a "good diver".

Bayern beat the Gunners 3-1 on aggregate to progress to the Champions League quarter-finals following a 1-1 draw on Tuesday night, with Robben at the heart of the action.

The former Chelsea man saw his first appeal for a penalty waved away after he beat Santi Cazorla in the area and then tumbled to the ground, but he was later successful when brought down by Laurent Koscileny in the dying minutes.

And Wenger has taken the opportunity to lay into the Dutchman, who also won a spot-kick in the first leg when felled by goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny.

"Robben is very good at getting the maximum out of nothing," he told ITV Sport.

"He is a great player, but also a good diver. He dived well [in first leg] and he dived well again tonight.

"He is one of the best players in the world but he gets past the player [Cazorla], then he actually slows down, looking for the foul."

Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain was impressive for the Gunners in Munich, but says his side lacked the cutting edge to get three unanswered goals they needed to progress.

"Maybe we lacked a bit of quality with our final ball," he also told ITV Sport. "We got into a lot of dangerous positions but we just lacked that final cutting edge ball.

"At the top level you need to be able to do that, especially against a team like Bayern, and maybe tonight we were just lacking that, but I think the boys put in a great shift tonight and we can take away positives and be proud of our efforts."

Simeone salutes Atletico Madrid's second-half display

    377662_heroa.jpg

Diego Simeone praised Atletico Madrid for their second-half showing in the superb 4-1 triumph over AC Milan in the Champions League on Tuesday.

Having won the first leg 1-0 at San Siro, Atleti ensured progression to the quarter-finals for the first time since 1997 at Vicente Calderon, wrapping up a 5-1 aggregate scoreline.Striker Diego Costa, who netted the only goal of the first leg, opened and closed the scoring to take his tally to seven in five matches in this season's competition.

Former Real Madrid midfielder Kaka had given Milan hope of a comeback by making the score 1-1 on the night, but a deflected effort from Arda Turan and Raul Garcia's header put Atleti into a strong position, before Costa made sure in the closing stages.

Atletico head coach Simeone credited Milan for coming back into the match, but hailed the performance of his players after the break."I knew that Milan could complicate things," he said. "We started better than them in the first half, and it seemed that we would go on and control the game after the first goal, but they got back into it.

"However, my players were excellent in the second half.""I am happy for the players and the fans. It is a night to remember. I am proud of sharing it with a team that try it so hard in every single match.

He added on Sky Sport Italia: "Before their goal we had started to relax, but afterwards we spent around 10 minutes without pressing, without getting the ball back and without calm.

"That was what we lacked at that time, the calm to cover the spaces and hold the field properly."I spoke to the team at half-time and after that I think everyone regained their calm."We suffered a little and Milan grew, but after the second goal we started pressing higher up the field and that caused Milan more problems.

"We started strong and then had to change. I knew that if we kept the ball on the right then we could do well. It changed with Robinho, who wasn't coming back.
"It was dangerous for Milan to go on the counter-attack, so we had to hold on to the ball and beware of losing possession.

Costa was quick to thank the home support for helping Atleti to victory and insisted there is no favourable tie in the last eight."We played very well as a team," he said. "We always have great support but after [the way] we've played, we deserve the plaudits.

"We don't really want a particular opponent in the next round, all the teams that will be in the quarter-finals will be tough prospects."

Oxlade-Chamberlain comes of age for Arsenal

    377581_heroa.jpg

When Arsene Wenger was asked, less than an hour before kick-off at the Allianz Arena, why he chose Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain ahead of Mathieu Flamini his response was simple: "Because we need goals."

Although his hand was forced by Bayern Munich's two-goal aggregate advantage, it was a brave decision by Wenger. The Frenchman, not the most flexible in his tactical approach at the best of times, tweaked his gameplan as much as his own parameters allowed and Oxlade-Chamberlain was the wildcard at the centre of his plans. Although the Gunners eventually came up short, the youngster did not disappoint.

This is a man who is 20-years-old, taking the game to the European champions in their own back yard whenever he was on the ball. He provided the kind of direct running and fleetness of foot which has all too often been lacking from this Arsenal side, even with Theo Walcott fit and well.

On a night when Wenger needed big performances, Oxlade-Chamberlain stepped up.

Wenger picked "the Ox" to drag the team forward at every possible opportunity and he can only be applauded for that. A cynic may have suggested that by sacrificing Flamini, the shield ahead of the back four, Wenger's need for goals would have quickly become far greater than at the start of the night. But Oxlade-Chamberlain would not be outmanoeuvred in defence and, in the first half especially, genuinely worried the Bayern ranks with his surging runs forward.

But that alone, of course, would not be enough to score two or more unanswered goals against the best side in Europe. While Arsenal can be commended for their approach, Oxlade-Chamberlain himself hit the nail on the head in his post-match analysis.

“Maybe we lacked a bit of quality with our final ball,” he told ITV Sport. “I thought we got into a lot of dangerous positions, we just lacked that final cutting edge ball. At the top level you need to be able to do that, especially against a team like Bayern.”

As Bayern controlled the match, albeit without dazzling, it was another quiet night for the man purchased to provide those cutting-edge moments: Mesut Ozil, who was withdrawn at half-time with a tight hamstring.

Ozil is still settling into his Arsenal surroundings and his day will come, but Oxlade-Chamberlain showed has the potential to be the man for the big occasion.

At one point in the first half he effortlessly glided past Javi Martinez, Philipp Lahm and Thiago, before being unceremoniously brought down by Bastian Schweinsteiger as he closed in on Manuel Neuer’s goal.

In that one moment alone he showed that he can worry the very best midfielders in the business when it matters most, which should give heart to not only Wenger but England boss Roy Hodgson.

With Jack Wilshere on the sidelines until at least the end of April, Wenger will certainly need his wildcard in the coming weeks. A perilous FA Cup semi-final against Wigan lies ahead in mid-April, but not before the Gunners face Tottenham, Chelsea and Manchester City as their Premier League pursuit ratchets up a notch or two in the next 18 days.

The 20-year-old, like his team, ran out of steam late on, and Wednesday will ultimately represent another Champions League failure for Wenger’s men. But without offering patronising commiserations, they can travel back to London knowing that they far from disgraced themselves. They made the same journey this time last year and it sparked a remarkable end-of-season run which lead them to a scarcely-believable fourth-placed finish.

Now they must pick themselves up once again, and if Oxlade-Chamberlain can reproduce the kind of inspired performance that he put in on Tuesday night then that first trophy in nine years may not be so far away.
