Chelsea will sign a striker, confirms Mourinho

    398848_heroa.jpg

Jose Mourinho has confirmed Chelsea will sign a striker this summer as the club look to bounce back from a trophyless season.

Mourinho returned to Chelsea in June 2013 after a six-year absence, but has failed to deliver any silverware in his first season back in London, with the club looking set to finish third in the Premier League. There was disappointment in Europe, too, with Mourinho's men suffering a semi-final exit at the hands of Atletico Madrid in the Champions League.
The Portuguese has not been shy in criticising his current strikers in public, with Samuel Eto'o, Fernando Torres and Demba Ba netting just 18 league goals between them this season.

And in his pre-match press conference on Friday, Mourinho reiterated Chelsea's need to bolster their attacking options, following Atletico striker Diego Costa having agreed to move to Stamford Bridge at the end of the season in a deal worth €42 million. "The striker is something we are speaking about for a long, long time," he said.

"In December and January, when all of you [the press] were asking why we were not bringing a striker, I was clear in saying it's something we were working on, that we were preparing the long-term future and not just an immediate solution."It's normal that we're going to bring a striker now. We have good strikers, good players, but it's the normal evolution of the team.

"Everyone wants the summer transfer window to improve and one area that we want to improve is the strikers' position."

Manchester United will finish above Manchester City next season, vows Bobby Charlton

    401082_heroa.jpg

Manchester United legend Sir Bobby Charlton has promised fans that the Red Devils will usurp Manchester City as the No.1 club in the city next season.

After a difficult year in which United were twice thrashed by Manuel Pellegrini's side, their rivals are now one win away from securing the Premier League title.

David Moyes was sacked in April as a result of the reigning champions' struggles, with the chance to leapfrog Tottenham into sixth place the most to which they can look forward on the final day, but Charlton is confident that they will be able to turn their fortunes around swiftly.

The club's record goalscorer told reporters: "This year has been a tremendously interesting year.

"We have done our best. We have changed manager and it has not worked but next year I guarentee that we will be No.1 in Manchester.

"We will have to buy a couple of players, which will happen. I am looking forward a lot to next year because Manchester United is not renowned for being second.

"We like to be first and we will be first. We have the most fantastic organisation and that organisation when it works is unstoppable."

Kaka: I'm loved at AC Milan

    402182_heroa.jpg

AC Milan star Kaka is keen to stay at the club as he feels "loved" at San Siro, despite speculation that he could leave this summer. The Brazilian returned to the club last summer from Real Madrid but admitted recently that he saw his long-term future in Major League Soccer.

However, he is eager to continue representing the Rossoneri and is determined to help improve the struggling Serie A side's fortunes."I'm loved here. I've been very happy this year," Kaka is quoted as saying by the club's official website."Perhaps the team's results were not positive - I wanted to help get better results - but it was a good year.

"I'm finding the right role on the pitch. I always try to lend a hand. It's true that the fewer defensive duties I have, the better, but I always want to be hopeful."I'm glad I came, I'm happy here. I've still got a year's contract.

"Europa League qualification is the goal. I don't know what will happen with [coach Clarence] Seedorf, but we are with him and want to reach the Europa League."Kaka missed out on a place in Brazil's World Cup squad but insists that he is not overly disappointed with Luiz Felipe Scolari's decision.

"I'm sorry that I'm not going to the World Cup, but I'm not sad because I did everything I could and the coach's choices have to be respected," he explained.
    "I'm disappointed, but not sad."

Manchester United lead race to sign Southampton starlet Shaw

    380431_heroa.jpg

Manchester United are leading the €30 million race to sign Southampton star Luke Shaw, Goal understands.

The Red Devils have edged ahead of Chelsea in the battle to capture one of the highest-rated youngsters in English football.

United are prepared to spend upwards of €30m to capture Shaw - even if Patrice Evra accepts the club's offer to extend his contract beyond this season.

As reported by Goal, United opened preliminary talks over a move for Shaw in January and have stepped up their interest in recent months through regular dialogue with Stellar Group, the agency who represent the newly-capped England international.

United are set to press ahead with a bid for Shaw even though Louis van Gaal will shortly be confirmed as the new manager in succession to David Moyes, who had identified the left-back as a key target and had done a lot of the groundwork for a deal.

Chelsea have also registered their interest in the 18-year-old, a boyhood Blues fan whose parents live in the south-west London suburb of Raynes Park, but boss Jose Mourinho has indicated he is not prepared to make Shaw a regular starter next season.

Liverpool, Manchester City and Tottenham are also monitoring the youngster's situation but they are not currently as advanced in the race for Shaw's signature as United and Chelsea.

There is growing confidence at United that they can capture the teenager, who is expected to be named in England's World Cup squad next Monday. United would like a deal in place before the World Cup, as they are aware that his value could rise if Leighton Baines' expected deputy shines in Brazil.

Old Trafford officials want to keep Evra for at least two more seasons and allow him to mentor Shaw while he gradually establishes himself in the season. The Frenchman, who is being coveted by Monaco and Inter Milan, has said he will make a decision on his future after this weekend's Premier League finale.

Shaw has had an outstanding 2013-14 campaign for Southampton and was recently named in the PFA Premier League team of the season.

Wenger calls for Uefa to ban clubs who break FFP rules

    402107_heroa.jpg

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger believes that clubs who break Uefa's Financial Fair Play rules should be banned from competing in the Champions League.

Manchester City and Paris Saint-Germain are the highest-profile clubs to have fallen foul of the regulations – having exceeded the permitted losses of €45 million over the 2011-12 and 2012-13 seasons - and are waiting to hear what sanctions they will face.

Reports have suggested that they will be forced to compete with a squad of 21, rather than 25, players in Europe's elite competition, while a fine and a wage cap are also under consideration but Wenger believes that the punishments are too complicated and has called on Uefa to simply ban clubs who overspend.

"I think the punishment is sophisticated," he told the press. "I would like a more simple one that makes more sense, although they have studied that for a very long time certainly to be in accordance with the legal side of it.

"You would think that you accept the rules and you're in the competition or you don't accept the rules and you're not in the competition. Then, everybody would understand it.

"There are rules and you respect them or you don't respect them. If you don't respect them, you have to be punished. When Uefa doesn't want to kick the clubs out of the Champions League, they have to find a more subtle punishment."

Wenger has long campaigned for fairer financial regulations but says that Uefa's current rules are so complicated that even he does not fully understand them.

"To me and all of us on the outside, it looks a complicated punishment," he added. "Nobody understands, really. Today people are informed. We live in a society where everyone is informed. The rules have to be clear so that you can inform people well.

"But if I go out in the street now and I ask a hundred people what you think of the fair play punishment, how many do you think can explain it to you? I'm in the job and I cannot do it. They have to clarify the punishment. We all agree that, if we don't respect the rules, you have to be punished but to explain to people how that works is very difficult."

Uefa has set a deadline of Friday for each team's cases to be settled, appeals notwithstanding.

:love:Ronaldo my role model for Manchester United success - Januzaj

    327515_heroa.jpg

Manchester United winger Adnan Januzaj says that he is using former Red Devils hero Cristiano Ronaldo as a model for his development.

Since making his United debut against Sunderland as an 18-year old earlier in the season, the Belgian is now regarded as one of the brightest prospects in world football and sees the Real Madrid superstar as the example to follow.

Januzaj cites the Portuguese's commitment to physical training in the gym as a particular lesson as he attempts to become stronger on the ball.

"I watch [Ronaldo] a lot and try to do the same things that he does," the youngster told Inside United. "He is a very good player.

"I always look at him and watch his games as well and try do what he is doing and remember what he did at Manchester United.

"I have to work hard in the gym like he did because, when he came here, he wasn't strong but, after a year or so, he became really strong and could push people away. I'm getting a bit stronger now due to the gym work."

    Bayern unveil Barcelona-esque kit

Bayern Munich have unveiled their home kit for the 2014-15 season - and have moved away from their traditional all-red shirts.

The Bavarians are instead harking back to their 1996 Uefa Cup triumph, when they beat Bordeaux 5-1 on aggregate in the final, with Mehmet Scholl on target in both legs. However, their choice of colours may raise eyebrows, with Bayern having added Barcelona-esque blue stripes to their kits.

The neck area will feature the slogan Mia San Mia - Bavarian for "we are what we are" - and the shirt will be worn with red shorts and white socks adorned with red and blue. The new kit will be modelled for the first time during Saturday's home clash with Stuttgart, which is due to kick off at 15:30CET.

Liverpool owners must back Rodgers this summer - Carragher

    402788_heroa.jpg

Jamie Carragher has urged Liverpool's owners to hand Brendan Rodgers the funds to turn the club into regular title challengers this summer.

The Anfield legend paid tribute to the progress being made under Rodgers as Liverpool sit two points behind Premier League leaders Manchester City heading into the final weekend of the season.

City are overwhelming favourites to be crowned champions thanks to their superior goal difference, but Carragher hopes the vast improvement in league form at Liverpool is a "springboard for future success rather than the summit of ambitions".

"Liverpool have had an outstanding season and for long periods were the best team in the land," wrote Carragher in his weekly Daily Mail column."And who knows, if Manchester City suffer an unexpected slip, they could yet be crowned champions.

"The likelihood, however, is that there will be no trophy, as was the case in 2002
and 2009 when the club last mounted a challenge for the Premier League title.
"In the two campaigns in which I came closest to the title, we needed two or three quality signings to make the next step, but the subsequent transfer windows were filled with poor signings as Gerard Houllier, Rafa Benitez and their scouts made mistakes that prevented us from pushing on.

"Liverpool don't need a summer where they buy players to fit in around the edges.
"They need quality additions. They need three players to go straight into the team — two defenders and a midfielder — then another striker and a wide player to add depth and quality.

"We hear a lot about the transfer committee who work behind the scenes at Anfield but however the system operates, the owners need to back Rodgers financially and trust his judgment to bring in the quality that will prevent a repeat of what happened after 2002 and 2009."

Prandelli: No English players would get into my Italy squad

    387058_heroa.jpg

Italy coach Cesare Prandelli has stoked the flames ahead of the World Cup by saying no England players would get into his squad.

Prandelli's men have been placed alongside England, Uruguay and Costa Rica in Group D at the showpiece event in Brazil.

The 56-year-old, however, has wasted little time initiating mind games ahead of the pair's opening game in Manaus on June 14.Speaking to Fox Sports, Prandelli, who is set to name his 30-man squad, said Roy Hodgson's players would be overlooked for his Italy team.

"Hodgson has found some very interesting players," he said. "In particular when you consider them from a physical perspective. They are very technical and resistant."They are a very, very strong team.

"They have some interesting young players. Until around a year ago no-one thought they would be able to make an impression in the Premier League."But I wouldn't take anyone to have instead of my own players. We are a good team too."

Despite his comments, Prandelli has not ruled out the possibility of working in the Premier League once his time in charge of Italy comes to an end."Going abroad fascinates everyone," he added. "Every time I talk to one of my colleagues who is working abroad, they have a smile on their face that I have forgotten about a little bit.

"Maybe in Italy there is too much pressure. I also one day dream of having such an experience.

"The English league is very competitive and full of enthusiasm. It is watched by a lot of people and transmits a lot of emotions."

‘We can still win the league’ – Rodgers

    400567_heroa.jpg

Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers insists his side are still in with a chance of winning the Premier League ahead of the final day of the season.

The Reds take on Newcastle at Anfield on Sunday and go into the game two points behind leaders Manchester City and with an inferior goal difference.

The Merseysiders' title hopes took a huge dent in midweek as they threw away a three-goal lead against Crystal Palace in midweek, to draw 3-3 at Selhurst Park, leaving City huge favourites to claim the title.

However, Rodgers says he is proud of his club's season and insists that the title has not been lost just yet.

"This is one of the best pushes for the league we have had as a club for 24 years, and you never know – we are still in it to the very end of the season, it’s certainly not over," he told reporters.

"The Palace game was probably the lowest I have felt in football, and you could see in the faces of the players how it affected them.

"But a great deal of learning will come out of that game. It is a great reference point for the likes of Jon Flanagan, Raheem Sterling, Joe Allen and Philippe Coutinho.

"All of these players are going to go through this again and they are going to be better prepared for it."

City, meanwhile, face West Ham at the Etihad and Rodgers is hoping the Hammers can pull off a shock and defeat Manuel Pellegrini’s men.

"If West Ham can go to Spurs and win 3-0, they can certainly go to City and win – especially if you have a guy like big Andy Carroll up front with the quality he has," he added.

"But if it doesn’t work out, we will learn from those experiences and I can guarantee we will be better next time.

"It’s something as a manager you will use as a reference point and our players will grow from it."

    Bertrand set for Chelsea talks

    402864_heroa.jpg

Ryan Bertrand plans talks over his Chelsea future in the close-season and insists he deserves a chance to become a Stamford Bridge regular.

The 24-year-old defender has spent time on loan at six different clubs - including his current spell at Aston Villa - following his move to Chelsea from Gillingham in 2006.

Bertrand has made just over 50 appearances for Chelsea, but has played in big games for the club, none more so than the 2012 Champions League final win over Bayern Munich.

He has also been capped at senior level for England and believes the time is right for him to force his way into the Chelsea first team.

However, he has hinted that he is willing to leave if he is viewed as a squad player.
"I'll go back to Chelsea in the summer and if they want me to play then that would be great," Bertrand told the Daily Mirror."Should it be other options, I suppose the ball is in their court. It's something we'll sit down and talk about in the summer.

"At this stage in my career I need to be playing. I don't want to be sat on the bench next season, so that is something we will discuss in the summer."For me personally I feel I'm more than ready. I deserve the chance to play there consistently, having had the experiences that I have done under numerous managers.

"I've learnt from some of the best players at the highest level. The likes of Didier [Drogba], JT [John Terry], Lamps [Frank Lampard], Ash [Ashley Cole] directly in my position. I feel it's my time. I'm 24, I'm looking forward to getting settled for the first time.

"I've had a taste of what it's like to be at the top, to win things. I've won the Champions League already. I've played for England a couple of times, in a crucial qualifying game as well."

Hertha Berlin 0-4 Borussia Dortmund: Lewandowski at the double in cup final warm-up

    402995hp2.jpg

Robert Lewandowski signed off with two goals as Borussia Dortmund beat Hertha Berlin 4-0 to warm up for the DFB-Pokal final in style. The Bayern Munich-bound striker scored in either half to secure the honour of being the Bundesliga's top scorer this season as Jurgen Klopp's men received a timely boost ahead of their Berlin showdown against the champions next week.

Lewandowski opened the scoring in the capital on Saturday and Milos Jojic's superb effort put Dortmund 2-0 up before the interval.

A stunning free-kick from Lewandowski nine minutes from time put the visitors firmly in command and Henrikh Mkhitaryan added the gloss to give them a measure of revenge against a Hertha side who claimed a 2-1 win at Signal Iduna Park in December.

Adrian Ramos was on target for Hertha that day, but the forward was left on the bench until the last 25 minutes for the hosts, scuppering his chances of finishing as the division's leading scorer.

The 16-goal Colombian was said to be suffering from a cold but the decision may have highlighted the home side's reluctance to play the 28-year-old against his future employers.

Klopp's side survived an early scare as Marcel N'Djeng's fifth-minute corner was met by the head of Sandro Wagner, whose effort was blocked on the line by Nuri Sahin.Roared on by a huge following, the visitors enjoyed prolonged spells in possession but struggled to create clear-cut chances in the opening 20 minutes.

Marco Reus, whose future is the subject of intense speculation, wasted an opportunity to threaten from a long-distance free-kick as his floated delivery proved easy for the home defence to deal with.

Dortmund were assured of second spot before kick-off at the end of a campaign in which they have fallen well short of Bayern, who secured the title in record-breaking time.

But they appeared determined to finish the league season with a bang and Lewandowski put them ahead after collecting a precise pass from Mats Hummels four minutes before half-time.

Jojic struck just three minutes later, cutting inside John Brooks before lifting an excellent left-footed effort beyond Thomas Kraft.

The game could have been put beyond Hertha's reach in the first minute of the second half as Reus fired over from an acute angle after being picked out by Lewandowski.Jos Luhukay introduced Ramos from the bench in place of the Levan Kobiashvili, who was given a rousing ovation to bring the curtain down on his Hertha career.

Ramos' powerful header from a corner was brilliantly kept out by Roman Weidenfeller in the 68th minute as the hosts' search for a goal continued.Dortmund saw Reus limp off just a minute later, a worrying sign for both club and country, with the Germany forward replaced by Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.

But they shrugged off that setback to score twice in the last 10 minutes, Lewandowski looping a stunning set-piece into the top corner for his 20th league goal of the season before Mkhitaryan's scrambled effort capped a dominant display.
