Kroos: No German punctuality at Real Madrid

    446787_heroa.jpg

Toni Kroos believes there is a completely different mentality at Real Madrid than the one he was used to at Bayern Munich.

The Germany international joined the Santiago Bernabeu side in a deal believed to be worth €25 million and says he is already adapting to his surroundings in Spain - despite discovering a very different approach to the one he became used to at the Allianz Arena.

"The mentality here at Madrid is different than at Bayern," Kroos was quoted as saying by Sport Bild.

"When training started at 10:30 at Bayern, everybody would be ready to go at 10:30. Things are a bit different here. I got used to it pretty quickly, though. Everything is a bit more relaxed and loose.

"I briefly considered using a translator at Madrid, but I didn't like the idea of having someone around me all the time. I can get by using English. And Sami Khedira helped me out with some minor things in the beginning. He was really helpful for me."

Kroos then went on to make it clear that he doesn't feel any extra pressure at Madrid, stating that he is not the type of person to get nervous.

"I never get nervous. It's simply not in my character. I am convinced of my own qualities, because I know that I can get the best out of myself when it matters most.

"I also know that it's just a football game when things aren't working out at some point. That makes me feel calm and relaxed. But I obviously remain focused as well, because I do care about how we play."

Bayern must not underestimate 'dangerous' Wolfsburg, warns Badstuber

    436588_heroa.jpg

Holger Badstuber has warned that Bayern Munich cannot afford to underestimate Wolfsburg in Friday's Bundesliga opener.

The reigning champions kick off their title defence with a match against Dieter Hecking's men at the Allianz Arena and Badstuber is aware of Wolfsburg's potential heading into Friday's encounter.

"Wolfsburg are dangerous, because they've brought in a lot of potential in recent years," the 25-year-old told the official Bayern website.

"They have plenty of hungry players who are aiming high."

Badstuber has missed much of the last two years due to two serious knee injuries and is now eagerly anticipating his return to league action after making an appearance in the DFB-Pokal win over Preussen Munster.

"I've worked towards this for a very long time and I'm looking forward to it. I still have a lot of work to do, but I am delighted to be 100 perc ent part of the team again. It makes me very happy.

"I am ready to play if called upon and I'd be delighted if that faith was placed in me."

Badstuber last featured in a Bundesliga game for Bayern on Deccember 1 2012 in the 1-1 draw with Borussia Dortmund.

USA star Jones' MLS deal hits snag

    424635_heroa.jpg

A deal to bring Jermaine Jones to Major League Soccer has hit a snag after the league's unwillingness to ensure which club he would join.

USA midfielder Jermaine Jones has reached an agreement on financial terms on a contract with the MLS, who has been with Turkish giants Besiktas since January.

However, sources have confirmed to Goal that, while Jones has agreed to a contract structure to join Chicago Fire, no deal has yet been signed as the league cannot guarantee he will move to the club.

New England Revolution and Chicago Fire are both interested in Jones' services, with the 32-year-old preferring a switch to Frank Yallop's side. Jones would be willing to join the Revolution, but only for a larger salary figure - something sources say the MLS is unwilling to arrange.

League officials could not be reached for comment.

Jones rejected a two-and-a-half year, $6 million (€4.5m) contract offer to join the Fire earlier this month, but negotiations with MLS continued, which opened the door for the Revolution to enter discussions to sign the World Cup standout.

Jones, who originally had desires to play in or nearer to Los Angeles to be closer to his family, has chosen to accept the most recent MLS contract offer to play for the Fire, but the MLS is not willing to guarantee that Jones would be sent to the club upon signing a deal.

That stance is a puzzling one considering how the acquisitions of U.S. national team starters and 'designated players' have been treated in the past. U.S. regulars have traditionally signed with the MLS knowing which team they were set to play for. The same has applied to all of the designated players previously signed by the MLS.

Why the league is handling Jones differently remains a mystery but, as things stand, he may be forced to seek options in Europe if no agreement is reached before the league's roster-freeze deadline of September 15.

Time is of the essence for both teams chasing Jones. Both the Fire and the Revolution are currently chasing play-off spots in the East, with the Revs just one point behind fifth-place New York Red Bulls for the final position, while the Fire sit three points back.

Van Gaal: Gifted Rojo can be a Manchester United star

    446362_heroa.jpg

Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal is delighted with the signing of Marcos Rojo and is adamant that the Argentina defender has a "very bright future" ahead of him.

United agreed a €20 million deal with Sporting Lisbon for Rojo on August 18 that saw out-of-favour winger Nani heading in the opposite direction on loan, with the club officially confirming the deal on Wednesday,

The 24-year-old becomes Van Gaal's third signing of the summer, following the arrivals of Ander Herrera and Luke Shaw, and the Dutchman is convinced that he will be a big player for United in the coming years.

He told the club's official website: "Marcos is a very gifted defender. He has played at the highest level in world football and can play either as a central defender or left-back.

"He has ability, physical strength and a willingness to learn that means he has a very bright future ahead of him. He had a very strong World Cup and has been playing in Europe for a couple of years now. He is a very good addition to the team."

United have also been linked with a big-money move for Real Madrid winger Angel Di Maria and Carlo Ancelotti suggested on Monday that no decision has been made over the Argentina international's future.

:(:sorry:Paul Scholes worries for United future

    i

Former Manchester United midfielder Paul Scholes has revealed that he's "genuinely scared" that his old team will become Premier League also-rans if major personnel changes aren't made immediately.Scholes said he fears United could experience a slump in fortunes similar to Liverpool in the 1990s if five experienced players aren't signed in a column written for The Independent.

"After the defeat to Swansea City, and no player signed since the end of June, I feel it is time for major change," he wrote."What do United need? Five players. Not five players with potential. Five experienced players... for now. Five proper players who can hit the ground running and turn around a situation that looks desperate."

Scholes has nominated Real Madrid quartet Xabi Alonso, Sami Khedira, Raphael Varane and Angel Di Maria in his list of additions that he thinks need to be brought to Old Trafford, along with World Cup winner Mats Hummels from Dortmund."It would be one very big cheque for Real Madrid, given that four of them would come from that club," he said. "It would be hard to land them all. But that is the level that United need at this stage of the transfer window.

"Looking at those five players, the obvious issue with Alonso for United fans would be his past with Liverpool. So what? He has that quality United lack.
"He is not the quickest but then he never was. Neither is Andrea Pirlo but he can play a bit. Alonso has a superb range of passing. He can shoot too. I noticed he signed a contract extension in January but, with [Toni] Kroos as well as Luka Modric at his club, perhaps now would be the time he would consider leaving."

With less than two weeks left to go in the transfer window, Scholes said that was alarmed that none of the world class talent that Manchester United had been pursuing -- negotiations he was privy to during his stint in the coaches box alongside caretaker manager Ryan Giggs -- had actually been purchased by the club.

He said: "In the few weeks at the end of last season when I was part of Ryan Giggs' coaching team at Manchester United, I was asked my opinion on whether the club should sign Cesc Fabregas or Toni Kroos this summer. I thought there was only one response to that difficult choice between two great players. I said United should sign them both.

"I do not know what happened to the Kroos and Fabregas deals over the summer. The club were originally working on both of them. Perhaps the deal could not be done in the end. Perhaps Louis van Gaal did not fancy either of them. Either way, the situation now, with 11 days of the transfer window left, has become ever more desperate for my former club. They have to sign some quality players."

The main reason these quality players are needed, Scholes argued, is the lack of progress some of United's younger players have made."I suppose I should have realised that the very fact I was still playing for United at 38 years old was a sign that there was not enough pressure on us senior players from those coming into the side," he said. "It was the same last season with Ryan. At times last season he was the best player on the pitch, at the age of 40."

"My concern, as ever, is about the long-term fitness of Jonny Evans, Phil Jones and Chris Smalling. In the 3-5-2 system, Jones and Smalling never looked solid. Jones is another one of those for whom the question of "potential" comes up. How long are we going to talk about his potential before he becomes the real deal? He is 22 now and has been a United player for three years. I don't feel that he senses danger in the way that a centre-half should do. I would prefer him to play at right-back, or in midfield."

Scholes was also keen to stress that he was not trying to kick his former club while it was down, but rather draw attention to the perilous state that it was in, adding: "Let us be clear about one thing. I am sick of having to criticise the club to which I gave my life as a footballer. But this is a United team that lost seven league games at Old Trafford last season and began on Saturday by losing at home to Swansea. United need to arrest their decline."

Simeone: Barcelona & Real Madrid even stronger than before

    437180_heroa.jpg

Diego Simeone believes Atletico Madrid face a near-impossible task to defend their league title as he feels Barcelona and Real Madrid have become even stronger than last term.

The Vicente Calderon side finished three points clear of both traditional Spanish giants last season, winning their first league title for 18 years and even reached the Champions League final.

Simeone, though, fears it might be too much to ask a repeat of that success following the arrival of Luis Suarez and Ivan Rakitic at Barca and that of Toni Kroos and James Rodriguez at Madrid.

"Atletico are not like Barcelona and Real Madrid. They have a structure that allows them to spend €80 million on one player, while we have spent about €100m in total," Simeone told La Gazzetta dello Sport.

"Lionel Messi, Luis Suarez and Neymar are three of the five best players in the world. Barcelona signed Suarez and Ivan Rakitic, while selling Alexis Sanchez and Cesc Fabregas. They have improved.

"And then there's Madrid. They signed Toni Kroos and James Rodriguez, while Gareth Bale will be even stronger than last season. They are better than last year, too, and quite a bit...

"It will be hard for us to compete with them. It's easy to understand that people wonder whether we can repeat last year's success. We should remember that it had been 18 years since the last title. What happened last term was something special.

"Atletico are champions, but the players aren't the same. We're in a different league than Madrid and Barca."

Atleti start the new Liga season away against Rayo Vallecano on Monday.

Knee injury no cause for concern, says Schweinsteiger

    442628_heroa.jpg

Bayern Munich midfielder Bastian Schweinsteiger has dismissed rumours that he faces a lengthy spell on the sidelines due to a knee injury.

The Germany international is currently out of action due to a kneecap problem and will consequently miss Bayern's Bundesliga opener against Wolfsburg this weekend.

However, Schweinsteiger has stressed that the problem is being handled well and he expects to be fully recovered again within the club's previously-expected time of five to six weeks.

"People should not be worried about me. I have had problems with my left knee since January. But I know how to deal with it and I'm in good hands with Dr. [Hans-Wilhelm] Muller-Wohlfahrt," Schweinsteiger told Bild.

"We are currently treating the cause of the problem and I should be able to play without pain again after that.

"I know that everything will be fine again, but there's no exact schedule of when I want to make my comeback. We will see how the knee reacts. What matters is that I completely recover.

"I am currently training individually in the fitness centre, without putting too much pressure on my knee."

The 30-year-old made only 23 Bundesliga appearances last term due to fitness issues, scoring four goals in the process.

No regrets over Fabregas joining Chelsea, insists Wenger

    446377_heroa.jpg

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger is adamant that there are no hard feelings over former captain Cesc Fabregas's move to Chelsea this summer.

The one-time Gunners hero departed north London to rejoin boyhood team Barcelona in 2011 but struggled to nail down a first-team place before being sold to the Blues in July.

Fabregas played his first competitive match for Jose Mourinho's side on Monday, setting up two goals in a 3-1 Premier League victory over Burnley, but the Frenchman insists he does not regret missing out on his old player.

"I have no regrets that Fabregas [joined Chelsea]," Wenger told reporters.

"My only regret is that he left us in the first place."

Arsenal have a well-stocked midfield even without Fabregas, with few players in the top flight drawing as much praise as Aaron Ramsey over the past 12 months, and Wenger is excited about the Welshman's progress.

"Aaron Ramsey has a different style to Fabregas but he has huge potential," the Gunners boss enthused of the 23-year-old, who was sent off against Besiktas on Tuesday.

Everton still sweating on Barkley injury

    445193_heroa.jpg

Everton manager Roberto Martinez remain unsure as to for how long Ross Barkley will be out with a knee injury.

Having picked up the problem in training on Friday, the young England international's start to the new season has been disrupted – though the Toffees boss has dismissed suggestions that he could miss as much as five months of action.

Martinez told reporters at Everton's training ground: "It's a little bit too early to know how long he's going to be out but the reports about the five months ... where was that comment from?

"We all know it's a partial tear and that could take a very different time depending on the player and I'm sure, with Ross Barkley, it will take a little time - possibly between seven, eight, nine weeks."

The Spaniard believes that a player Barkley's physique can often recover from an injury quicker than most is pleased with his early efforts in recovery.

"You would expect with such a physically strong boy that he has recovered a lot quicker in the first few days," Martinez added. "At the moment we are very, very pleased with his progress, he's got his knee in a brace and at the moment every day is a day we are getting a lot of benefit in his recovery."

Though Barkley's injury could provoke a rush to find cover in the transfer window, the Everton boss is keen to be careful and weigh up how other injured stars like Bryan Oviedo and Arouna Kone are getting on before reinforcing further.

"There's going to be many links [but] there's a long time left in the window," he added. "We are more focused than ever to see how strong we are internally.

"It depends on how the injured players progress. We're keeping a close eye on Oviedo and Kone [and] if they're going to be immediately involved or take a little while. It's true over the next two weeks we need to take that into consideration as then the transfer window closes."

However, Martinez feels that his current squad are versatile enough to cope as they are, explaining: "We are a team that needs to be flexible in how we approach games because we have players who can adapt and be real thinkers on the pitch.

"We've never been a rigid team and you want to be able to adjust. We want to be flexible and we'll always try to have individuals who can cope with that.

"I'm delighted with the squad we have [but] we need to be a little bit open-minded with what we do in the window."

Immobile: Conte wanted me at Juventus

    441809_heroa.jpg

Borussia Dortmund striker Ciro Immobile has revealed that Antonio Conte was keen to bring him back to Juventus this summer, but the Serie A champions' hierarchy eventually opted to cash in on the Italy international.

The 24-year-old, who was co-owned by Torino and Juventus, impressed for the former in 2013-14 as he netted 22 goals to win the Serie A top-scorer title and Conte was keen to work with the striker at the Italian champions on a permanent basis.

However, Juventus opted to sell their part of Immobile's economic rights to Dortmund rather than purchase him outright, allowing the striker to move to Germany before Conte ultimately stepped down as coach amid reports of a disagreement over transfer policy.

"I spoke with Conte and he wanted to take me back to Juventus," Immobile was quoted as saying by La Repubblica.

"However, Juventus then reached an agreement with Borussia Dortmund. In the end, they were the ones who made the final decision."

The striker went on to stress that he has adjusted to life at the Bundesliga giants quickly and says he enjoy working under coach Jurgen Klopp.

"I have settled in very well at Dortmund. Klopp really likes the way I pay and fight for every ball. He sees me as a true warrior.

"Klopp is a coach with a lot of charisma."

Ocampos: Monaco stars have confidence in Jardim

    447221_heroa.jpg

Lucas Ocampos is convinced Monaco will turn their poor start to Ligue 1 around and has full belief in new coach Leonardo Jardim.

Having finished runners-up to Paris Saint-Germain last season, much was expected of Monaco this term, despite the departure of James Rodriguez to Real Madrid.

Jardim was the man chosen to replace Claudio Ranieri at the helm in the close-season, but the former Sporting Lisbon boss has endured a tough start to life at the Stade Louis II.

Monaco have lost both their Ligue 1 fixtures so far this season, including a 4-1 defeat at Bordeaux last time out.

However, Ocampos has no doubt that Jardim's methods will soon begin to bear fruit.

"The coach brings a new philosophy," the 20-year-old midfielder told the club's official website. "For now, we have not been able to demonstrate it.

"But I am convinced that in the coming matches we will react and reap the fruits of our labour. I think the coach brings a lot of confidence to the players, this is very positive.

"This year we would like to win a title, the most important is the championship."

Monaco return to the Champions League this season after a nine-year absence, and Ocampos cannot wait to get started.

"It's a dream to play in the Champions League this season," he added. "After the World Cup, this is the best competition."

Jovetic expects to score 'so many goals' for Manchester City

    445785_heroa.jpg

Manchester City forward Stevan Jovetic is eager to put his injury-hit debut season behind him and figure prominently for the Premier League champions this term.

The 24-year-old arrived at the Etihad Stadium from Fiorentina last year but only made 18 appearances in all competitions as his start to life in English football was blighted by fitness issues.

Jovetic was in fine form during the close-season and was rewarded with a start in City's league opener against Newcastle on Sunday, helping Manuel Pellegrini's men to get started with a win.

"I don't want to speak about last year because I have said so many times what happened," he told the Manchester Evening News.

"I just want to look to the future.

"I am happy to be here and I know that I am going to be an important player for this club and I am happy to be a part of this team.

"Of course, I am expecting so much from myself this season. I expect to score so many goals."

Di Maria has requested a transfer, confirms Ancelotti

    446124_heroa.jpg

Carlo Ancelotti has revealed that Angel Di Maria wants to leave Real Madrid and that they are looking for a solution before the end of the summer transfer window. The Argentina international has lost his starting berth at Madrid following the arrival of James Rodriguez and Toni Kroos this summer and is keen to move on in order to get regular first-team action elsewhere.

Di Maria has been heavily linked with Paris Saint-Germain and Manchester United in the past few months, but the Ligue 1 champions recently stated that they are no longer interested in signing the winger due to financial reasons, leaving United seemingly as the main contender to lure him away from the Santiago Bernabeu.

"The player has requested a transfer this summer. He rejected the club's offer to stay at Madrid, so we are looking for a solution," Ancelotti said at a press conference."We will find a solution for Di Maria before the end of the transfer window, but he remains a Madrid player for now. We are in a situation that the player has to fix himself.

"I'm surprised that it seems as if we are not all in agreement about the situation, but this is not the case. We are all on the same line here.

    447245_heroa.jpg

Wantaway | Di Maria is looking to find away out of the Santiago Bernabeu

"If Di Maria cannot find a solution for his future, he will stay here. We embrace him and he can continue to work here. There's no problem.

"Di Maria could start in the second leg of the Supercopa de Espana against Atletico, like all the players who are available."

The 26-year-old, who joined Madrid from Benfica in the summer of 2010, has a contract with Madrid until the summer of 2018, but could be available for a transfer fee in the region of €60 million.

Meanwhile, Ancelotti has stressed that Sami Khedira's situation is different to that of Di Maria, adding that the Germany international - a reported target for Arsena, Chelsea and Bayern Munich - has not asked to leave.

"Khedira's situation is different than Di Maria's situation. He has just one more year to go on his current contract and he has only recently come back from a serious injury," Ancelotti added.

"We will see what happens, but he has not requested a transfer."
