Chelsea 1-1 Manchester City: Silva salvages a point for the champions

    885132_heroa.jpg

Champions Manchester City failed to make inroads into Chelsea's five-point lead as the Premier League's top two shared an absorbing 1-1 draw.

Jose Mourinho continued his tempestuous relationship with the media by shunning a pre-match interview with Sky Sports – apparently angered by both a £25,000 fine for comments about referees and Diego Costa's retrospective ban for a stamp on Emre Can during the League Cup semi-final second leg this week.

That indiscretion earned the Spain striker a three-match suspension, but the man to benefit from Costa's absence - recalled striker Loic Remy - took centre stage at Stamford Bridge on Saturday.

He gave the hosts a 41st-minute lead, before a rare mistake from Chelsea goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois allowed David Silva to equalise in the final minute of the first half.Although Manuel Pellegrini's team controlled much of the second period, their winless league run extended to three matches.

City overhauled deficits in late runs to the Premier League crown in 2012 and 2014, and a similar effort may now be required, as Mourinho’s men remain in the driving seat with 15 games remaining.

Aside from Costa's absence, Ramires came into the Chelsea midfield as Cesc Fabregas missed out with hamstring injury, while Bacary Sagna was a surprise inclusion at right-back ahead of Pablo Zabaleta for Manchester City.

The visitors started sharply, as Courtois beat away a stinging shot from Jesus Navas inside the first 20 seconds and Fernandinho had a low, angled drive deflected wide.

James Milner was alert to disposes Chelsea right-back Branislav Ivanovic in the 24th minute and play the ball into Sergio Aguero, but Kurt Zouma forced City's top scorer to shoot from an acute angle and Courtois saved comfortably.

Courtois' opposite number, Joe Hart, made his first save of the match from an Oscar effort after an error by Vincent Kompany let Remy escape down the left flank.

John Terry then joined fellow captain Kompany in having an error go unpunished - Aguero pulling a shot wastefully wide after the former England man had missed his kick from a 32nd-minute punt down field.

That was a chance the Argentina striker would regret 10 minutes later, as Eden Hazard brilliantly steered Ivanovic's flighted pass back across goal for Remy to convert.City's response was immediate, as Courtois fumbled a searching Navas cross, Aguero smashed the loose ball back towards goal and Silva prodded home.

Frank Lampard enjoyed warm applause on his return to Stamford Bridge while warming up with the City substitutes, as his colleagues on the field enjoyed an encouraging start the second half.Silva and Navas combined on the right flank for Fernandinho to plant a header into the turf - Courtois turning the bouncing ball over.

Milner then looped a headed attempt onto the roof of the net, the impressive Navas again supplying the ammunition, and City's control increased as Chelsea's midweek League Cup exertions began to tell.

Lampard finally made a 76th-minute introduction as City attempted a late assault.
However, with Mourinho increasingly animated on the touchline, his side displayed steely resilience in keeping with their manager’s siege mentality, as they closed out what could prove a vital point in the title race.

Eibar 1-3 Atletico Madrid: Mandzukic and Griezmann fire champions to victory

    885272_heroa.jpg

Antoine Griezmann and Mario Mandzukic were in sparkling form as Atletico Madrid bounced back from Copa del Rey elimination to beat Eibar 3-1 at a sodden Ipurua.

Diego Simeone's men crashed out of the Copa after a 3-2 home defeat by Barcelona on Wednesday and they were greeted with torrential rain in the Basque Country – initially plunging the game into doubt - but the Liga champions produced an instant response as they cruised in testing circumstances.

Eighth-placed Eibar rarely looked capable of causing a splash on Saturday, with Griezmann's eighth league goal from his last six outings giving Atletico a seventh-minute lead. The France international was then the architect for Atletico's second, crossing for the equally sharp Mario Mandzukic to prod home.

Mandzukic added his 10th Liga goal of the season in the 27th minute and, sensing the match was already won, a stubborn Atletico sat back and tightened their grip thereafter.

Eibar improved after the break, though Federico Piovaccari's consolation goal came a minute from time and did little to change the outcome as Atletico remain four points off the pace of rivals Real Madrid in the Liga title race.

Despite the saturated pitch, Atletico did not resort to a direct style of play and their commitment to playing the ball was rewarded after just seven minutes.Griezmann peeled away to the left and was played into the area by Raul Garcia, the French attacker slamming a precise effort into the bottom-right corner.

Eibar were not quite so keen to stick to the principles of short passing, though, often pumping the ball into the box to give Miguel Angel Moya something of a physical test.

But the goalkeeper was more than a match and Atletico made the most of Eibar's lack of ingenuity, as Mandzukic steered a left-wing delivery in from close range after 23 minutes - Griezmann turning provider this time.

And Eibar again failed to cope with the Croatian four minutes later.Abraham and Raul Navas hesitated in defence, leaving Mandzukic room to blast past a helpless Xabi Irureta in Eibar's goal. The hosts were finally presented with their first chance in the 43rd minute, but Piovaccari fired straight at Moya after Diego Godin's clearance struck Tiago and fell kindly for the Italian.

Eibar attempted to up the ante at the start of the second half, passing the ball around quicker in the marginally improved conditions. But they continued to struggle crafting opportunities, with Mikel Arruabarena's tame half-volley in the 52nd minute about as much as they could muster, leaving Moya largely untroubled.

Atletico showed little determination to add a fourth in a second half which failed to ignite much excitement and, although Piovaccari headed in Saul Berjon's cross at the end, Simeone's side strode to a routine triumph.

    Pochettino to keep Tottenham grounded

    847442_heroa.jpg

Mauricio Pochettino is refusing to get carried away by Tottenham's improving form following Saturday's 3-0 win over West Brom.

Following a difficult start to the campaign, Spurs are now into the final of the League Cup and sit fifth in the Premier League after goals from Christian Eriksen and a Harry Kane double earned them victory.

Eriksen opened the scoring before Kane added a brace to put Spurs two points adrift of Southampton in fourth, but Pochettino says the focus must remain on their next game, a London derby with Arsenal.

Asked about the prospect of breaking into the top four, Pochettino responded: "We don't speak about that, I think that we need to focus on the next game. "Step by step, I think this is our objective - no objective or challenge on the long term.

"We need to play every game like we played today. If we show the performance like today, maybe we have the possibility to arrive [in the top four] but we need to be consistent from here to the end of the season."I am very proud of my players, I congratulate them because it was a great performance - like a team."

I need to buy a defender - Mancini

    860072_heroa.jpg

Roberto Mancini admitted he wants to sign a defender before the end of the January transfer window but says Inter are struggling to identify a quality target.
The Serie A side have already recruited Xherdan Shaqiri, Lukas Podolski and Marcelo Brozovic on loan deals this month, but Mancini is eager to do more business.

Juan Jesus, Jonathan and Marco Andreolli are already on the sidelines, meaning defenders are the Inter coach's top priority, but his search for signings has hit a stumbling block.

"At the moment we're working on other areas but it's not easy to find players capable of changing things for you in January," he said. "Do we need a striker? We need other things. You build a team from the back. "At the moment we only have one fit centre-back. We certainly need someone in defence and probably in midfield too.

"We're going to be playing three games a week soon and we need as well-rounded a squad as possible."

Inter's defeat against Torino last weekend left them 10th in the table heading into matchday 21, but Mancini is confident they are making progress."It was a bad result against Torino but we must aim to keep improving every day and hope to get a bit more luck while playing well." the former Italy forward said.

"My lads are putting everything into it, both on the training pitch and in matches.Regardless of the result we've made progress on an individual level and as a team. "Of course my hope is that we continue to improve. We need to score goals and to do that we have to show a bit more flair in the final third and be more clinical in front of goal."

Sassuolo host Inter on Sunday and a victory for the hosts would see them climb above Mancini's side.

    Pellegrini frustrated by Chelsea tactics

    885712_heroa.jpg

Manuel Pellegrini revealed his frustration after Manchester City drew 1-1 with Premier League leaders Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on Saturday.

Loic Remy opened the scoring for Jose Mourinho’s men in the 41st minute before David Silva responded to level the scores just four minutes later, ensuring that the gap at the summit remains at five points.

Remy’s goal was Chelsea’s second and final shot on target in the game, and Pellegrini – who criticised the Blues for playing like a “small team” when the two sides drew 1-1 in September – was left disappointed with the champions’ inability to take all three points from the top-of-the-table clash.

"I think that our team tried to win the game from the first minute until the end," he said.

"I am very proud about that because it is not easy to come here to Stamford Bridge against the leaders of the Premier League with very good players.

"We created, especially in the first half, clear chances to deserve more than the point.

"That's why I am not happy about the point but I am happy with the performance."

Asked whether Chelsea needing extra time to secure a League Cup semi-final victory over Liverpool in midweek caused them to tire, Pellegrini said: "I don't know what happened with Chelsea. From the first minute we came for the three points.

"We made some changes to continue trying to create space against a team that defend very well, very near their box, who are also very dangerous on counter attacks - we could not think just attacking.

"That was the most important part of the game - that they didn't have any chances to have those fast counter attacks that they always do.

"I think that both teams have a clear style of play. Everybody wants to play in the way they think is better.

"You [journalists] analyse the style of Chelsea; I analyse just the style of my team. I repeat I am very proud of the way we played away against the leaders of the Premier League. It is a difficult stadium where Chelsea normally wins.

"I'm not saying we are more attacking, I'm saying that both teams have a clear style in the way they play. You must analyse the style."

Jose Mourinho, meanwhile, continued his media blackout after the match and refused to appear in front of assembled journalists or the television cameras.

You can't play champagne football in a relegation battle - Klopp

    885912_heroa.jpg

Borussia Dortmund coach Jurgen Klopp insisted his side have improved after drawing 0-0 with Bayer Leverkusen, but said it was impossible to play "champagne football" in a relegation fight.

A drab game saw both sides struggle to create chances, with Dortmund choosing to leave top scorer Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang on the bench on the back of the striker's recent involvement in the Africa Cup of Nations.

Despite their lack of cutting edge in the final third, Klopp claimed there were still plenty of positives to take from the game, even though the result sees BVB drop to the bottom of the Bundesliga. He told the club's official website: "It was not perfect, but we have taken what was needed and had a really good start to the second half.

"The stability was there and if we had played the odd ball clear, it would have been even better."Klopp was not worried by the style of football played by his team, hinting that the increasingly real worry of relegation may be having an effect on their approach to games.

He said: "One cannot speak of a relegation battle and demand champagne football.
"The result here [in Leverkusen] was absolutely fine and a point here is always strong."

One of the game's few talking points involved Leverkusen goalkeeper Bernd Leno, who was arguably lucky to stay on the pitch after appearing to handle outside his area just before the quarter-hour mark. However, Klopp refused to criticise the performance of referee Knut Kircher, choosing instead to focus on his side's showing at the BayArena"A free-kick [for the Leno incident] would not have been so bad. For such an intense game, there were few contentious decisions overall.

"We wanted to play a pressing game. There were two occasions where we were running up alone on goal, when should have played in more detail. "In confined spaces, the timing has to be perfect. We have not sought perfection today, but stability."

Matic feels the effects of Liverpool match in City draw

    788632_heroa.jpg

Nemanja Matic conceded Chelsea's midweek exertions took their toll during the Premier League leaders' 1-1 draw with Manchester City.

Jose Mourinho's team retained their five-point advantage in the title race after City's David Silva cancelled out Loic Remy's opener on the stroke of half-time at Stamford Bridge.

Chelsea needed extra time to see off Liverpool in Tuesday night's League Cup semi-final and defensive midfielder Matic - who shielded his defence superbly as City dominated play after half-time on Saturday - said his team-mates felt the effects of a gruelling week.

"Especially in the last 20 minutes of the game we felt a bit tired but I'm happy because everyone gave 100 per cent," he told Sky Sports.

"It was difficult to run with the City players because they were more fresh than us."

Serbia international Matic felt the draw was a fair result - one that leaves Chelsea in control of the title race with 15 games remaining this season.

"To be honest we expected three points from today but if you see all the game I think a draw is a good result for both teams," he added.

"We had some chances, they had some chances and it is the same now - five points' difference. We are happy because of that and I hope we will continue.

"We scored in the 41st minute and it was a good moment for us to go into half-time 1-0 but City showed that they are a strong team - they never give up and they scored in the final minute of the first half.

"They are good and use any chance you give them but I am happy with how we played. We gave our best after Liverpool, when we played 120 minutes. For us it is a good draw."

Atletico response to Barca beating was perfect - Simeone

    885062_heroa.jpg

Atletico Madrid boss Diego Simeone was thrilled with the way his players bounced back from their Copa del Rey elimination at the hands of Barcelona in midweek after defeating Eibar 3-1 on Saturday.

In rainy weather and on an atrocious pitch, Atleti stormed into a three-goal lead thanks to an opener from Antoine Griezmann and a Mario Mandzukic double, with a late consolation strike from Federico Piovaccari the only blemish on a fine win.

Simeone believes his players gave the "perfect" reaction to their 4-2 quarter-final elimination over two legs to Barcelona, leaving them fighting for La Liga and the Champions League for the remainder of 2014-15.

"It is never easy to play in these stadiums," the Argentine told reporters. "If Eibar had scored first... We needed to be so careful.

"Today was one of the best performances that Mario Mandzukic has given since he arrived. He put in a lot of movement and hard work.

"The team responded perfectly to the Copa del Rey knockout and this result gives us the chance to keep on fighting in La Liga."

Atletico still trail leaders and neighbours Real Madrid by four points, having played one game more, as the European champions thrashed Real Sociedad 4-1 on Saturday.

    Rodgers hails ‘lethal’ Sturridge

    885072_heroa.jpg

Brendan Rodgers lauded the impact of Daniel Sturridge as the England international made a goalscoring return from his lengthy injury layoff as Liverpool cruised to a 2-0 victory over West Ham.

The lively Raheem Sterling had already put the reds ahead before the introduction of Sturridge, who made sure of the three points with a thunderous shot from an acute angle.

Despite being out of action for five months, the striker didn’t look at all rusty and Rodgers was clearly delighted with his contribution.“When he’s in that area of the field he’s shown for us over a couple of years here that he’s lethal. It was nice for him. He’s obviously been out a long time.

“He’s a top class player. I think he’s shown that in his career so far. He’ll get goals, today he was only on the field for 25 minutes and got one and went close to another. He’s worked hard and the first opportunity was a great first touch and finished it off with his second.”Despite the goals of Sturridge and Sterling, Rodgers refused to put too much pressure on the pair and instead praised the overall team performance.

“I’m more concerned about the form of the team. I thought Adam Lallana was brilliant today. (Philippe) Coutinho’s two passes were phenomenal. Raheem is an outstanding talent and it was a brilliant finish from him. There is talents throughout the team with young players that are developing very quickly and it is good to see.”
Meanwhile, Sam Allardyce conceded that the deal to sign Darren Fletcher from Manchester United is now off.

On any chance of resurrecting the deal before the transfer window closes, he said: “I really don’t know at this moment in time, there’s so much going at the club at the minute. Negotiations broke down this morning.

“Thank god the window shuts tomorrow, it’s a disaster. It creates problem for managers. Players are being tapped up. The sooner it shuts the better. Whether we get a replacement or don’t get Darren Fletcher is neither here nor there, it’s about the window being a really huge distraction to us all.”

    Moyes leaps to Bale's defence

    885472_heroa.jpg

Real Sociedad David Moyes has leapt to the defence of Real Madrid star Gareth Bale after he was again booed by his own fans on Saturday.

Moyes' side took a surprise lead at the Santiago Bernabeu before a flurry of goals from the hosts, courtesy of James Rodriguez, Sergio Ramos and a double from Karim Benzema, saw the home side win 4-1.

However, it was another disappointing afternoon for Bale, who was jeered by Madrid supporters for a second time this season after missing two golden chances for the European champions, with Carlo Ancelotti slamming his critics after the game.

Moyes also added his thoughts on the situation and was fulsome in his praise of the former Tottenham winger despite doing his best to ensure his side kept him at bay on Saturday.

"Gareth Bale is a fantastic player," said Moyes. "He had a couple of chances to score and there is nothing to worry about him. I'm sure he will be someone great."

The Scot was left to lament the gulf in quality between the Champions League holders and his side, while revealing that there will be no last-minute transfer deadline day buys should star striker Carlos Vela's injury prove to be serious.

"We tried to play with the ball," Moyes added." We started the game very well, but there was a big difference in the quality of the teams.

"We don't know what happens to Vela. We will run some tests tomorrow and see what is wrong with him. He is very important to us. We cannot find a substitute in the market, but we will do what we can if he cannot play for a while."

Bayer Leverkusen 0-0 Borussia Dortmund: Draw leaves BVB rock-bottom

    885432_heroa.jpg

Borussia Dortmund were left rock bottom of the Bundesliga after they drew 0-0 with Bayer Leverkusen in their first match after the winter break.

A tight game saw both sides struggle to create chances, with Mats Hummels denying Gonzalo Castro an opener on the goal line towards the end of the first half, before Ciro Immobile was denied by Bernd Leno just after the interval.Leno was perhaps lucky to stay on the pitch having handled outside the area early in the contest, in one of the game's few talking points.

It was a reasonably quiet introduction for Dortmund debutant Kevin Kampl, with the visitors unable to break down a resolute home defence.

The result does little for either side, with Dortmund's league campaign lurching to another low point, while a rare blank drawn by Leverkusen at home sees them slip from a Champions League spot after Schalke and Borussia Monchengladbach victories in Saturday's earlier action.

Speculation linking star players Marco Reus and Mats Hummels with moves away will only add to the pressure on boss Jurgen Klopp, who was recently backed by the club's CEO Hans-Joachim Watzke.

Leverkusen took a Bundesliga record-breaking nine seconds to score when the sides met in August's reverse fixture, and they soon went about setting the pace once again, with visiting goalkeeper Roman Weidenfeller forced into a smart save by Roberto Hilbert's speculative 25-yard drive within the opening minute.Klopp came into this game having never overseen a Dortmund defeat at the BayArena, but his side remained cagey during a tightly contested start.

The hosts were perhaps lucky not to go down to 10 men inside 13 minutes, when goalkeeper Leno appeared to handle outside the box as he rushed out to deny Immobile, but referee Knut Kircher remained unmoved.

Dortmund grew into the game, but largely struggled to call Leno into action, Nuri Sahin cutting inside to bend an effort wide from the edge of the area just before the half hour.

They were nearly made to pay for their profligacy seven minutes before half-time when a sweeping counter-attack allowed Karim Bellarabi to get behind the defence on the right flank. The winger squared to Castro inside the area, only for his shot to be cleared off the line by Hummels' diving header.

Dortmund responded and nearly broke the deadlock five minutes after the break when a charged down clearance allowed Immobile to race into the area, but his angled shot was palmed away.

Stefan Kiessling fired wide for the hosts four minutes later, following some good work from Josip Drmic and Castro, with the latter chipping over the bar when one-on-one, 13 minutes, from time to sum up a frustrating outing for both sides.

Van Gaal in the dark over Fletcher future

    882652_heroa.jpg

Louis van Gaal revealed he was in the dark over Darren Fletcher's future after guiding Manchester United to a 3-1 win over Leicester City.

The midfielder travelled down to London to complete a medical on Friday ahead of a free transfer to West Ham, but Hammers boss Sam Allardyce said the transfer had broken down on Saturday.

Van Gaal said: "We want to help Fletcher. That's my only concern. I am very happy as a manager that he is coming back. He is my third captain. But because of the competition he is not playing so much. That is why I want to help him.

"I don't know what is happening. The agreement was different on Friday and now on Saturday it is off. I don't know. I cannot say anything about it."

On the pitch, United were comfortable winners at Old Trafford on Saturday as Robin van Persie, Radamel Falcao and a Wes Morgan own goal gave them a 3-0 lead at half-time on Saturday afternoon.

Marcin Wasilewski's late strike was nothing more than a consolation and Van Gaal admitted there was little he could fault in the opening 45 minutes from his side.

"I could not say very much at half-time so I was very happy as a coach," the Dutchman told the press. "I asked them to kill the game because when you remember the game in Leicester, we didn't kill the game. But I think we have killed the game too much.

"We played more balls backwards and wide than forwards. And we have to learn, it is also a process, that you keep patience, that you don't take risky passes but when the pass is available because of the options of the strikers or the midfielders, then you have to play forwards without risk.

"We have killed the game in the second half so I said to my players I am happy. It's a good result."

Leicester worked hard to deny United space, leading to a certain degree of frustration in the stands. However, Van Gaal explained that patience is the key when up against a team of limited attacking ambition.

"I have asked my players to play like a team, not only in possession but also when the opponents have the ball and also in transition," Van Gaal added. "And I have given my team a compliment for that. There were only two moments in the second half of lack of concentration and out of those two moments they scored one goal.

"But I was very pleased at half time because it is not so easy when you see Leicester defending with two rows of four players and a goalkeeper in their own half and also one of their strikers are dropping in.

"Then you have a very small space to play football. Of course I want to play with a high ball-speed but that it not always possible. Then you need also patience. I believe also in the first half we had a lot of patience but want to try to play forwards to the strikers. So I was very pleased with the first half."

After a sequence of three winless matches in the Premier League against Tottenham, Stoke City and Southampton, United have recovered to win two on the bounce against QPR and Leicester.

They are third behind Chelsea and Manchester City and a point ahead of Southampton but have played a game more. The Saints host Swansea on Sunday.

Next up at Old Trafford is the FA Cup fourth round replay against Cambridge United on Tuesday night which follows on from their scoreless draw at the Abbey Stadium on January 23.

Vidal tantrum part of football, says Allegri

    883432_heroa.jpg

Juventus coach Massimiliano Allegri has stressed that Arturo Vidal's tantrum at being substituted is simply "part of football".

Allegri replaced Vidal with Paul Pogba after 70 minutes of Wednesday's Coppa Italia quarter-final, which Juve won 1-0 thanks to a last-minute goal from Alvaro Morata.

Reports surfaced in the Italian media that the star Chilean midfielder was unhappy with Allegri, but the coach has come out battling by insisting that such touchline grievances are momentary and part of football.

"Fight between whom? Between myself and Vidal? I was surprised to read about it on Tuttosport, I believe it was Tuttosport," Allegri told reporters."First of all the day after the game I didn't talk with the player because he was absent during training and that's because he had fitness issues to take care of.

"Also, during the game, he was substituted but then came back because he had to nurse a knee problem. Granted, the player can be upset when substituted, but it's part of the game, it's part of football."But no, there was no fight with Vidal simply because there was no need to clarify anything."

Juventus are back in action on Sunday as they bid to maintain their lead at the top of Serie A with a trip to Udinese.

AC Milan unveil new stadium plans

    175801_heroa.jpg

AC Milan have unveiled plans to build a new 48,000-seater stadium which they hope to move into before the start of the 2018-19 season.

The Italian giants announced on their official website that they have made a bid for the land in the urban area of Portello in the city and revealed their designs have taken inspiration from several English stadiums.

The stadium will include a hotel, sports college, restaurants and children’s rides, with the club hoping it will be one of the most innovative arenas in world football.

"AC Milan are interested in the redevelopment of the Portello area of the city," a statement on their official website read.

"Evaluations of the offers will begin and Milan hopes it will lead to the creation of one of the most innovative stadiums in the world.

"It plans to hold 48,000 spectators with particular attention towards families, with the latest comforts and the best in security.

"The project takes its inspiration from the English model: a stadium that can be reached by public transport and by doing so encouraging fans to be more environmentally aware."
