'Buzzing' Arsenal on top form - Walcott

    888912_heroa.jpg

Theo Walcott says Arsenal are at the top of their game after beating Aston Villa 5-0 at the Emirates to record their third Premier League win in a row.

The England international, making his first Premier League start for the Gunners since January 2014, was also on target as Arsene Wenger's side cruised to victory over the Villans.

Olivier Giroud gave the hosts the perfect start netting inside 10 minutes before Mesut Ozil added a second and Walcott grabbed a third, and the 25-year-old could not hide his delight at the result.

"The whole crowd, everything - it's buzzing around the place. When a team's at the top of their game, everything happens for them. Everything's happening for us at the moment," he told Sky Sports.

"It's always nice to get goals, especially at the Emirates. The fans have been fantastic to me. My little boy was there as well which was fantastic to see. The finish was great but it was all about the three points in the end.

"The first half was quite cautious. Aston Villa came at us and they had a game plan, they pressurised us, and going it at half-time 1-0 was probably just deserved. Second half I couldn't think of a [more] one-sided game. It was a great victory and it's always important to get a lot of goals."

Arsenal were without talisman Alexis Sanchez for the clash, but the returning Ozil starred and Walcott was quick to pay tribute to the Germany international for his impressive display.

"Mesut has worked tremendously hard since coming back from injury, like myself," he added. "He showed it on the pitch today. It's not going to happen overnight, but it has for him!

"In two games since coming back he's got two goals. Not just that, his whole general play - interchanging with players and looking for the balls in behind, his touch is absolutely fantastic and a fantastic finish.

"Since Mesut's joined the club I haven't really had the opportunity to play with him. I'm very grateful that I'm playing with such a great talent and hopefully we can both continue to stay fit and charge on in the Premier League."

Barcelona 3-2 Villarreal: Messi spares Catalans' blushes

    891002_heroa.jpg

Lionel Messi spared Barcelona's blushes with the winning goal in a 3-2 win over Villarreal on Sunday to keep the pressure on leaders Real Madrid at the top of La Liga.

Barca twice fell behind at Camp Nou, but fought back strongly to seal all three points and end Villarreal's 18-match unbeaten run in all competitions.

It looked as though they might extend that sequence when on-loan Real Madrid man Denis Cheryshev put Villarreal ahead in the 30th minute, but Neymar brought the hosts level on the stroke of half-time.

Luciano Vietto restored the visitors' lead soon after the break, but goals three minutes apart from Rafinha and Messi put Barca in control.Rafinha's effort was a scrappy effort, but Messi's - his 22nd goal in La Liga this season – was typically anything but as he caressed the ball into the net from the edge of the box.

The win moves Luis Enrique's side back to within one point of fierce rivals Real Madrid at the Liga summit, after Carlo Ancelotti's side thumped Real Sociedad 4-1 on Saturday.

Barca made a bright start, as Sergio Asenjo clawed away Luis Suarez's first-time effort from the edge of the box, before the Uruguayan shot narrowly wide of the right-hand post. For all Barca's pressure, Villarreal took a surprise lead on the half-hour mark with their first attack of note.

A loose ball on the edge of the box fell to Mario, whose wayward shot was heading well wide of the target until Cheryshev stuck out a leg and diverted the ball goalwards, wrongfooting Claudio Bravo.

Just when it appeared the visitors would reach the interval unscathed, they came undone in the final minute of the half as Neymar converted after Asenjo parried Rafinha's initial effort back into danger.

Far from being downhearted by that blow, Villarreal retook the lead in the 51st minute.Gerard Pique's mistake allowed Giovani dos Santos to race to the byline and cut back inside his former Barca colleague before squaring the ball for Vietto to sweep home from close range.

Any worries Luis Enrique had were soon eased though as Barca roared back.
First, Suarez crossed for Messi whose header was blocked in front of goal, but Rafinha nipped in to smash home his first Liga goal for Barca on the rebound.

Two minutes later, Jordi Alba's pass found Suarez, who again fed Messi, only this time the Argentina star was not to be denied, curling a delightful right-foot finish into the top corner from 18 yards. In a breathless period of play, Villarreal's Victor Ruiz had a goal ruled out for offside before Barca broke upfield at pace.

Neymar's appeals for a penalty were turned away as he tumbled over Asenjo's challenge one-on-one, and Suarez inexplicably headed wide from point-blank range as play went on.

That miss proved academic, however, as Barca comfortably saw out the game to record their eight successive victory in all competitions.

AC Milan 3-1 Parma: Menez eases pressure on Inzaghi

    890842_heroa.jpg

Jeremy Menez eased the pressure on Filippo Inzaghi after his double helped AC Milan see off Parma 3-1 at San Siro on Sunday.

Inzaghi's men were facing a third straight home defeat but their top scorer stepped up in the key moments to secure a vital three points and lift them into the top half.
The Frenchman converted a first-half penalty before firing in a fantastic second 12 minutes after half-time to take his personal tally for the season to 12 goals.

This restored the hosts' lead after ex-Milan man Antonio Nocerino had cancelled out the opener, raising his hands in apparent apology to the sparse crowd inside San Siro in response.Any hopes of second equaliser were dashed late on as Menez teed up Cristian Zaccardo to score a third.

Parma entered the match 10 points adrift at the foot of the table and despite a promising performance slipped to a fourth straight defeat, intensifying the scrutiny on coach Roberto Donadoni as their dismal season - which has featured numerous issues on and off the pitch - continues.

New Milan signings Salvatore Bocchetti and Mattia Destro were in from the start as Inzaghi sought a fast start, although the visitors held them at arms' length for most of the opening stages. That was until the hosts were awarded a 17th-minute penalty when Zaccardo's back-post header struck the arm of Cristian Rodriguez.

After much confusion, and conversation among the officials, Menez stepped up to send Antonio Mirante the wrong way from the spot.

Rodriguez soon atoned somewhat for his part in Milan's opener, winning a free-kick in a dangerous position and meeting Daniele Galloppa's set-piece before Nocerino reacted first to poke in the knockdown from close range.

Milan responded well. Alex rattled the post with a powerful free-kick and Destro almost had his debut goal when Marco van Ginkel's cross caught out Mirante, though Diego Lopez was called into action by Silvestre Varela and Nocerino as Parma exploited the space left behind.

Michael Essien was introduced at the break and when his loose pass was greeted with boos by the home crowd it appeared the match may turn against the hosts.
But with 57 minutes on the clock, Menez was once again the man to step forward for Milan.

The Frenchman linked up wonderfully with Alessio Cerci down the right before cutting in and finding the bottom corner with a crisp left-foot shot.Milan were visibly lifted by the goal with Cerci exerting greater influence over the game - and Menez's work rate, as well as his goals, was beginning to win over some of the home fans.

Menez received further reward for his tireless display in the 76th minute as he cut in from the right once again, but this time played the perfect pass for an on-rushing Zaccardo to crash into the net from eight yards and seal victory.

Rafinha: Anything possible with Messi, Neymar & Suarez

    598401_heroa.jpg

Rafinha hailed Barcelona's front three of Lionel Messi, Neymar and Luis Suarez following their 3-2 win over Villarreal, saying "anything is possible" with the trio on the field.

Denis Cheryshev gave the visitors the lead at Camp Nou, but Neymar levelled shortly before half-time. Villarreal then took the lead for a second time through Luciano Vietto, before Rafinha scored his first goal for the club on 53 minutes.

Messi then completed Barca's comeback and spared their blushes with the winner two minutes later, leaving Rafinha to praise his team-mates for their attacking efforts.

"We knew it was going to be difficult and they came on strong," said the Brazilian, whose strike was his first for the club. "It was a very important match for me, though I know it's difficult to win a starting position.

"Luckily we equalised quickly after going behind and then scored a third soon after. With the three players we have up front, anything is possible."

The win leaves Barcelona just a single point behind leaders Real Madrid at the top of La Liga, who have played a game less.

    Menez salutes AC Milan spirit

    890992_heroa.jpg

Jeremy Menez saluted AC Milan's spirit after they saw off Parma 3-1 at San Siro on Sunday.

The Frenchman's fine season continued with another two goals to end a run of three straight defeats in all competitions and give coach Filippo Inzaghi breathing space after his position had been brought into doubt.

Menez was proud of the way Milan stuck together to get back to winning ways and insist the players remain 100 percent behind their boss.

He said: "Everyone is pulling in the right direction. There are no individuals, it's a team effort and we're giving our best in every game.

"From tonight we have to start again. It wasn't the perfect performance but we will learn positive lessons from this victory. The game will serve as a lesson."

Alessio Cerci got another 90 minutes under his belt as he bids to reach full match fitness after joining the club from Atletico Madrid earlier in January, and the wide man says he hopes to become a match-winner for the Rossoneri.

"Iam close to finding my peak fitness, but I can still improve by 20 per cent. I just need to work, in Madrid I didn’t play much and I missed out on pre-season over the summer. We all know that physical fitness is important.

"I hope that something important can be created between me and the fans, I like to entertain the fans. With Torino I was able to make the fans dream, I hope I can do that here."

Milan are still frightened - Inzaghi

    866112_heroa.jpg

Filippo Inzaghi says there is still a sense of fear amongst his AC Milan players after they beat Parma 2-1 at San Siro on Sunday.

Jeremy Menez was the hero with two goals, while Cristian Zaccardo struck a late third to give the Rossoneri their first win of 2015.

Inzaghi headed into the game under pressure and looking to avoid a third consecutive victory that would have led to further doubts over his future and the Italian feels the pressure is evident amongst his squad.

"It was a complicated challenge," he said after the game. "We had to cope with nine or 10 absences but we deserved the win, though we need to improve our quality of performance.

"The team is in a difficult period and there is a certain fear. Individual errors have occurred because of this. We have to find serenity and key players need to lead us forward."

Milan CEO Adriano Galliani said earlier on Sunday that the club could seal a deal for Parma defender Gabriel Paletta, who was an unused substitute at San Siro.

Inzaghi said he was in the dark over any potential move but admitted he was pleased with the business Milan had done in the January window.

"I thank the board for the purchase they have made in bringing in the players I asked for. Of Paletta I know nothing. I'm happy for the arrival of [Luca] Antonelli, given the physical problems of [Mattia] De Sciglio and [Christian] Abate."

Antonelli has returned the club he began his career with on a loan deal from Genoa, while Spanish midfielder Suso has also arrived from Liverpool on a permanent deal.

Sunday's result leaves Milan in eighth place in Serie A, with league leaders Juventus up next on February 7.

Messi better on the wing - Luis Enrique

    890732_heroa.jpg

Barcelona coach Luis Enrique believes Lionel Messi is better suited to playing in a wide role in his current system after he scored the winner in their 3-2 victory over Villarreal.

The Catalans had to come from behind twice before sealing victory, with Neymar, Rafinha and Messi all finding the back of the net to cancel out goals from Denis Cheryshev and Luciano Vietto.

The Argentine has often been deployed as a deep lying playmaker in Luis Enrique's new-look system, but operated as a winger on Sunday - a move the coach defended after the game.

He said: "Messi playing on wing again? It's for the good of the team, but he has freedom to move. We want him to touch the ball a lot."

Luis Suarez again toiled away up front for Barca but failed to convert several chances that came his way, meaning he has just five goals in 18 games in all competitions for the club this season.

But Luis Enrique again offered his backing to the Uruguayan, insisting his contribution was more than just about scoring goals.

"What does Suarez add? A lot," he continued. "It's crucial to have someone to push back the centre backs. The goals will come, no doubt."

The Spaniard also reserved special praise for Rafinha, who scored his first goal for the club, and Andres Iniesta, who shone in a central role.

"Rafinha? He had a very complete game, like the others. This season, he needs to adapt a bit. No doubt he'll be a key player for Barca.

He added: "Iniesta is playing at best position now, more in centre, not as much from wing as before. I'm very happy with performances."

The result leaves Barcelona one point behind leaders Real Madrid at the top of La Liga, but Carlo Ancelotti's side have a game in hand.

Henry: I cried when I left Arsenal for Barcelona

    730842_heroa.jpg

Thierry Henry admits he cried when he left Arsenal in 2007 and has revealed he was initially considered to be Barcelona’s fourth-choice striker by Pep Guardiola.

Henry, who announced his retirement in December, helped guide Arsenal to two Premier League titles and three FA Cup trophies, while he also remains the club’s record scorer with 228 goals.

"I never considered leaving Arsenal." Henry told beIN Sports. "But I was 29 years old and in form, I thought all the guys left and I did not know if Arsene [Wenger] would be staying.

"It was not easy and when I left I cried. I'm not ashamed to say it. I'm a competitor and I had to leave.”

Henry joined Barcelona in a €21.3 million deal in June 2007 but insists he had to force his way into Guardiola’s plans.

"When I arrived at Barcelona, Guardiola told me that I was the fourth-choice striker and I would not be starter,” said the Frenchman.

"I accepted the challenge and I fought, and competition makes you increase your level. People talk about luck, but you need to create your own. When you work, you get the reward at the end.”

Henry also revealed the extent of his struggles at Juventus, which prompted his move to Arsenal in 1999 after just 19 appearances for the Serie A club.

"When I arrived at Juventus, there were many problems," said Henry. "The team was not running well. I played under Ancelotti in a 3-5-2, a system where I had trouble fitting in.

"I struggled, even after I started to score. But I left for other reasons because Luciano Moggi [Juventus' then chief managing director] wanted to do business. It was not respectable what he did."

West Ham move for Fletcher collapses

    814202_heroa.jpg

West Ham's move for Darren Fletcher has collapsed, Goal can confirm.

Sam Allardyce was keen to push through a deal to sign the Manchester United midfielder before the transfer deadline, and confirmation of the move appeared a formality earlier this week, despite concerns at the club over Fletcher's injury record.

However, the deal hit the buffers on Friday as Fletcher and his representatives arrived at West Ham for talks and, potentially, a medical.

The Scot was interested in a €80,000-a-week deal at Upton Park over three-and-a-half years, meaning West Ham would have shelled out over €13.3 million across the duration of his contract.

And Goal understands negotiations over those personal terms, as well as agent fees, caused the talks to break down, with Allardyce confirming on Saturday that the deal is now unlikely to go through.

He said: "It [the transfer going through] doesn't look like it, no. It looks like it has broken down on negotiations."

Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal, meanwhile, was left bemused by the breakdown in talks, and expressed his surprise at the situation.

"I don't know what is happening," he told reporters after United's win against Leicester. "The agreement was different on Friday and now on Saturday it is off. I don't know. I cannot say anything about it."

Arsenal back in the title race? Let's wait and see - Wenger

    890082_heroa.jpg

Arsene Wenger believes it is too early to say Arsenal are back in the Premier League title race, but admits if they continue their current form they could yet challenge the top two.

The Gunners are 11 points adrift of leaders Chelsea despite picking up a 5-0 win over Aston Villa on Sunday to record three straight league wins for the first time this season.

Although Wenger does not envisage either the Blues or Manchester City slipping up in their two-way race for the title, he refused to rule his side out of the running if they can maintain their current high standards.

"It's too early to say that," said Wenger when asked whether his team were now in the title race.

"We are 11 points behind. That means they [Chelsea and City] need to lose four games and we need to win four. I believe that we should try to be consistent and see what happens."

Arsenal will be aided in their quest to achieve that consistency by the return of several key men, with Mesut Ozil and Theo Walcott making goalscoring returns to the starting line-up, though Wenger believes they still have some way to go before hitting top gear.

"I think [Ozil] still lacks a little bit of competitive edge on the sharpness front, but the quality of his game is exceptional and he is getting back now," Wenger continued.

"He worked very, very hard physically and he is now ready to play again.

"I still think [Walcott] needs more sharpness and contact [challenges from opponents]. He is a very intelligent player, Theo's game is about the quality of his movement, where he gets the ball, where he can be dangerous and when he gets in front of goal he can score."

Ozil arrived late on transfer deadline day in September 2013, but Wenger does not anticipate such activity when the current window closes on Monday. "I don't think I will be busy," the Frenchman added. "We have done everything we wanted."

Crystal Palace agree permanent Zaha deal

    464412_heroa.jpg

Crystal Palace have agreed a deal to sign Manchester United winger Wilfried Zaha on a permanent basis, Goal can reveal.

Zaha, who has made 16 league appearances since joining Palace on loan in August, will now finalise personal terms ahead of an official announcement on Monday.

United have decided to offload the 22-year-old, who was initially brought to the club in a deal arranged by Sir Alex Ferguson, with Louis van Gaal unconvinced that he has a long-term future at Old Trafford.

Since signing for United back in January 2013, Zaha has been almost non-existent in the first-team, spending last season on loan with Cardiff City, after having had a furious exchange with then-manager David Moyes, before rejoining Palace in the summer transfer window.

His only two senior appearances for United came in the Community Shield and League Cup back in 2013, with the likes of Adnan Januzaj, Antonio Valencia and Ashley Young having been preferred options on the wing.

The signings of Juan Mata and Angel Di Maria, as well as the emergence of James Wilson and Andreas Pereira in 2014 have done little to improve Zaha's prospects and he is now all set to sign for the club where he started his career.
