:shocked:West Brom 3-0 Chelsea: Fabregas sent off as Berahino inspires shock win

    1406142_heroa.jpg

Cesc Fabregas was sent-off as Chelsea suffered their heaviest defeat of the season against West Brom.

Saido Berahino gave the Baggies the lead as he curled a shot into the bottom corner from the edge of the area before Fabregas was dismissed in bizarre fashion.

The midfielder kicked the ball against Chris Brunt's head as referee Mike Jones dealt with an altercation between Diego Costa and Gareth McAuley, with Jones wasting no time in giving Fabregas his marching orders.

Berahino doubled the hosts' lead less than two minutes into the second half as he converted from the penalty spot after he was brought down by John Terry.

Loic Remy hit the post as the Premier League champions looked for a route back into the game, but Tony Pulis' side secured the three points when Brunt's powerful drive beat Thibaut Courtois at his near post.

Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho was gushing in his praise of West Brom counterpart Pulis in the build-up to the match – hailing his "absolutely amazing" record – and the Welshman certainly had his players fired up for the visit of the champions.

In a lively start, Courtois got down well to turn Callum McManaman's angled drive behind and Fabregas evaded two tackles as he slalomed into the penalty area at the opposite end before firing straight at Boaz Myhill.

Berahino took just nine minutes to repay Pulis' decision to recall him by putting Albion ahead in some style.

Joleon Lescott rolled a simple pass that Berahino turned and ran on to before escaping the attentions of Gary Cahill and rifling right-footed into Courtois' bottom left-hand corner from 25 yards out.

An inswinging Brunt corner midway through the first half required Courtois to punch clear right under his crossbar and Chelsea broke immediately. Costa, back after over a month out with a hamstring injury, worked his way down the left flank and picked out Eden Hazard at the near post, but his close-range shot looped over the bar off Lescott.

Then came the flashpoint that saw Fabregas dismissed in unusual circumstances.

McAuley and Costa were involved in an off-the-ball tangle in the penalty box that resulted in the latter being booked and play being stopped as the two sets of players voiced their views at referee Mike Jones.

Fabregas, all on his own on the opposite side of the penalty area, inexplicably struck the dead ball back into the crowd of players and into the back of Brunt's head, prompting Jones to brandish a straight red.

Filipe Luis stung Myhill's palms with a free-kick that the Albion goalkeeper saw late and Courtois saved smartly with his feet to deny Brunt from James Morrison's throughball as an eventful opening 45 minutes came to a close.

The drama continued straight after the interval as Terry bundled Berahino over in the box to concede a penalty within 30 seconds of the restart.

A full-stretch Courtois got a hand to Berahino's spot-kick, but it nestled in the bottom corner to make it 20 goals for the season in all competitions for the England Under-21 international and 14 in the league.

Loic Remy struck the post from the edge of the area with Myhill well beaten 10 minutes later, but any hopes of a fightback were dashed by Brunt, who cut in from the right following a short-corner routine and lashed low past Courtois at his near post.

:cool:Depay passes medical ahead of Manchester United move

    1378582_heroa.jpg

Memphis Depay has passed a medical ahead of completing his move to Manchester United, the club have confirmed.

The PSV star arrived at the club's Carrington training base on Monday to undergo a medical after United agreed a fee with the Dutch club earlier in May.

Depay will now stay in Manchester overnight ahead of his move being completed in June.

In a short statement, United said: "Memphis Depay has today completed his medical at Manchester United.

"The club will now work towards finalising his registration when the international transfer window opens in June."

United confirmed they had reached an agreement with PSV to sign the Netherlands international on May 7, with Louis van Gaal's side having seen off interest from Premier League rivals Liverpool and Ligue 1 champions Paris Saint-Germain.

Depay's agents arrived in Manchester on Sunday evening, before the player went through the medical process at Carrington training base.

Goal understands the 21-year-old will sign a five-year contract with Van Gaal's side, on wages that will be in excess of six figures a week, while the transfer fee could rise to as much as £31 million depending on individual and team success.

Depay played his final game for PSV in the 3-2 win over ADO Den Haag, where he was confirmed as the Eredivisie Golden Boot winner having already secured the title with the Eindhoven club.
With Depay on the verge of completing his switch to Old Trafford, Van Gaal will step up his pursuit of other summer targets, with the likes of Mats Hummels and Gareth Bale set to be high on the agenda.

As reported by Goal, United have the financial muscle to surpass their unprecedented £150m spending from last season, where a new goalkeeper could be a requirement as David de Gea's future with the club hangs in the balance.

Van Gaal admitted on Sunday that he "cannot persuade" the Spaniard to remain at Old Trafford, insisting that the former Atletico Madrid keeper has a difficult decision to make with Real Madrid interested in taking the 24-year-old back to Spain.

The United boss said: "I don't know [if Madrid have made an offer]. I don't think I can persuade him [to stay]. He knows everything that he has at the moment at Manchester United.

"I don't have to say something in benefit of Manchester United because he can feel it every day. Unbelievable that reaction [from the United fans after he was substituted against Arsenal]. When he is going, he is losing that. Here he has a lot of credit. He has to decide."

Top four not enough for Herrera

    anderherrera-cropped_3fzm28mzkiid1pm9xpx9adexj.jpg

Ander Herrera has set his sights on silverware next season after Manchester United secured a top-four finish in the Premier League on Sunday.

The former Athletic Bilbao midfielder netted the opener in the 1-1 draw with Arsenal at Old Trafford, with the result guaranteeing Louis van Gaal's side a spot in the Champions League next term.

Herrera says securing a return to Europe's elite club competition was always United's aim but he insists that he has bigger ambitions for his second campaign in England.

"We are happy because we are in the top four and that was the first aim of this season," he told MUTV.

"But we are Manchester United and next season we have to fight for all trophies.

"We are representing the biggest club in England and we fight for everything."

United stumbled in the cup competitions under Van Gaal, as they lost to MK Dons in the League Cup second round and were beaten by Arsenal in the fifth round of the FA Cup.

Juventus have shown you don't need to buy success - Cruyff

    giorgio-chiellini-gianluigi-buffon-real-madrid-juventus-champions-league-13052015_4jiapb62blt21mu8bo04e12hv.jpg

Netherlands legend Johan Cruyff has hailed Juventus for proving that money is not necessarily required to buy success in modern football.

Massimiliano Allegri has guided his side to the Champions League final after beating Real Madrid in the semi-finals - a team with significantly greater financial resources.

The likes of Paris Saint-Germain and Manchester City - both of whom have benefited from wealthy foreign owners - again failed in the knockout stages, with Cruyff delighted to see Juve triumph against the odds."It is clear once again that success is not for sale," he said in his column in De Telegraaf.

The Bianconeri have also tasted glory again in Serie A, as they won a fourth straight crown, which Cruyff puts down to their decision to build a new stadium and an attacking approach."It's been a successful formula because the stadium in Turin is always full," he added. "That also impacts on the performance of the team.

"Juventus are one of the first clubs in Italy who decided they wanted to play a different style of football. They realised that Italian football wasn't always perceived as attractive."

Juve will face Barcelona in the Champions League final on June 6 in Berlin.

Martino: Di Maria still key for Argentina

    angel-di-maria-premier-league-everton-v-manchester-united_yzyw2twpxe6t1imojm7wma1bn.jpg

Gerardo Martino remains convinced that Ángel Di María can play a major role for Argentina at the Copa América despite his struggles at Manchester United.
The 27-year-old arrived at Old Trafford last summer from Real Madrid for a British record fee of €82.4 million after a season that saw him win the Champions League and finish runner-up at the World Cup.

But after a bright start in England, his form has tailed off badly in recent months and he last started a game for United in their home FA Cup defeat by Arsenal at the start of March – a match in which the South American was sent off. However, he remains a key figure for Martino who normally likes to use the left-footer as part of his mobile attacking front three.

“In some cases there are players with a long career playing with the national team who could be going through a rough spell at their clubs, but nobody could think of leaving them out,” he told the Argentina Football Association’s official magazine. “That’s the case with Di María.

“I’d rather he be happy and continue to be a decisive player like he was for Benfica and Real Madrid, but I wouldn’t think that his current situation (at Manchester United) would hurt his chances of playing at the Copa América.”

In an interview in which he answered questions from Argentina fans, Martino also reserved special words of praise for Paris Saint-Germain playmaker Javier Pastore.

The 25-year-old has become a hugely influential presence in the French capital this term as his club clinched the domestic title for the second season in succession.

Pastore also impressed in Argentina’s last international get-together at the end of March, scoring the winner in the 2-1 victory over Ecuador, and Martino has hinted he could have a big role to play in Chile this summer.“Javier played in our last friendlies and had a very, very good performance and he’s doing well at Paris Saint-Germain,” he continued.

“As for the position I see him in, I guess it’s the one we all see; ahead of the two defensive midfielders or to the left of the lone central midfielder.“I have great expectations regarding the level he can reach and what he can bring to the team.”

Redknapp: Bale is like Ronaldo - but he must sort himself out

    gareth-bale-cristiano-ronaldo-sevilla-real-madrid-liga-bbva-05022015_19nv7i0g895sx1w9ofs7pljyac.jpg

Former Tottenham boss Harry Redknapp says Gareth Bale still reminds him of Cristiano Ronaldo, despite his current struggles at Real Madrid, but says he must "sort himself out".

The 25-year-old has been booed by his own fans and criticised by the Spanish press on multiple occasions this season after an inconsistent run of form since the turn of the year.Redknapp bought Bale from Southampton in 2007 and turned him from a left-back to a winger, and says he needs the freedom to roam if he is to return to his best.

He told AS: "For me, he’s like Cristiano. You’ve got to give him the ball; once he gets it, he’ll gain a yard, then two and put himself in a position where he can shoot with the kind of power that no one has – or dribble through defences which is something that only a few players do in today’s game. I’d give him all the freedom in the world.

"Both of them are players who like to roam freely, Bale slightly behind... They are players who feel more comfortable without any tactical restrictions. It would be amazing to see them both at full speed, 30 or 40 yards out and sprinting towards goal, running at defences."

Redknapp also refuted suggestions Bale has encountered difficulties because of his inability to perform in the same team as Ronaldo, with the 68-year-old pointing to his performances last season.

He added: "When he left to join Madrid, I did worry that he might be left in Cristiano’s shadow. But he did well last season; playing in the role he was given. He scored some extraordinary goals.

"This year, I see he’s getting criticised. He has never received this amount of attention and maybe that’s affected him a little. But he’s got to get over it, be strong and believe that he can turn his situation around."Bale's problems have drawn comparisons with his start to life at Tottenham, where he went 24 games before winning a game in the side, and Redknapp warned the Wales international he must show great character and bounce back.

"He needs to work hard, learn the language. He’s got to dive in head first. It’s no good for him to be going over whether it would be better if he came back home. He’s at one of the greatest clubs in the world, if not the greatest. This is a man’s world and he’s got to sort himself out."Whenever he was a bit low and disheartened, I’d put my arms around his shoulders. 'Give the ball to Gareth,' I’d tell his team mates, in front of Gareth.

'Today, every player out there was afraid of you,' I’d tell him, 'what a great player you are lad.' I’d repeat that and Gareth would always respond well."

:(Valdes: De Gea has a big question to answer

    victorvaldes-cropped_i4g5c24bt0mb1kjo7a4tfkjmv.jpg

Manchester United goalkeeper Victor Valdes admits David De Gea must answer a big question this summer regarding his future at the club.

The former Barcelona man replaced his compatriot in the second half of United's 1-1 draw with Arsenal on Sunday, in what could be De Gea's final game at Old Trafford if reports of a summer move to Real Madrid materialise.

Coach Louis van Gaal admitted after the game that his current No.1 faces a "difficult" decision over his future, and Valdes followed suit in his assessment of the situation.

"Madrid, Barcelona, Man United are three of the biggest clubs in the world," he told reporters. "Everyone in the world wants to play for these clubs. It's a question you would have to put to David. I cannot answer for him."

Valdes' substitute appearance was his first for the club since joining the club on a free transfer in October and he admitted he was delighted to at last come off the bench.

"I am very happy to be here. I have one more year on my contract here. Let's see what happens. My team-mates have treated me well here. The coach has treated me well, as well. The truth is that it has all been good. And the fans, they are an incredible group of fans.

"To come on and be welcomed like that is incredible for a footballer. It felt very good. It all went very quickly. David asked to come off and the next thing I knew I was on the pitch.

"I didn't know what was happening, but then someone said: 'Victor, get in there.' It was a great feeling to be on the pitch at Old Trafford, the fans welcomed me very well and, for that reason, I am happy.

"I wasn't happy with the result. It was a lucky goal for them. But I'm happy I made my debut."

Theo Walcott scored Arsenal's equaliser shortly after Valdes entered the fray, with his shot deflecting off the boot of Tyler Blackett and looping over the goalkeeper's head on its way into the net.

Mata: Gerrard has left an indelible mark on world football

    1403622_heroa.jpg

Juan Mata has paid tribute to Steven Gerrard, claiming that the United States-bound Liverpool captain left an "indelible mark on both European and world football".

Gerrard is ending a 17-year association with his boyhood club before departing for MLS outfit LA Galaxy in the summer and played his final home game for the Reds on Saturday, as Crystal Palace won 3-1 at Anfield.

A host of players past and present have already given their thoughts on Gerrard's impending exit and Manchester United's Mata has now added his own sentiments.

"I take this opportunity to wish good luck to Steven Gerrard after his farewell in Anfield," he wrote in his official blog on juanmata8.com.

"Regardless of rivalries, he is a player that leaves an indelible mark on both European and world football."

United also played their final home game of the season this weekend, drawing 1-1 with Arsenal to confirm a fourth-place finish, and Mata says the fans will be key to winning silverware in the future after a "touching" lap of honour.

"We know we have played very good games this season but at the same time the team and the fans have had to cope with tough moments, and even so they have shown unconditional support," the attacking midfielder added.

"This union with our fans will be the key to celebrate titles soon. They deserve it. As every year, the lap of honour after the game was touching."

Navas frustrated with Real Madrid role

    keylornavas-cropped_15wpnrocgghop1enyfji5xocvf.jpg

Real Madrid goalkeeper Keylor Navas has voiced his frustration with his limited playing time this season.

The Costa Rica international has made just 11 appearances in all competitions since arriving from Levante after playing a key role in his country's remarkable to the quarter-finals of last year's World Cup.

On Sunday, Navas made just his sixth Liga start for Madrid in the 4-1 victory over Espanyol, with have the 28-year-old shot-stopper having spent the entire season playing second fiddle to club captain Iker Casillas.

Casillas has come in for criticism in recent weeks, though, and Navas hopes he will be given more chances to impress - despite Madrid's interest in Manchester United No.1 David de Gea.

"If I don't play, I can't prove my worth," Navas, who was at fault for Espanyol's goal, told reporters on Monday."Just because I don't complain to the press doesn't mean that I'm not struggling. I wanted to play more. I never thought about being a back-up.

"It's true that I've had a difficult year, but I've always tried to do my best and be professional. When I played, I tried to do my best. My attitude and desire have helped me cope.

"I hope next year will be different and that I earn a starting role. I have a contract for five years and have a positive mindset."It's difficult, but I won't give up. I hope the opportunity arises at some point. Competition is good because it helps me improve."

Chelsea by far the best in the Premier League - Pulis

    pulis-on-mourinho-being-an-all-time-great_11px78x2nysw1l33p39twrm6y.jpg

West Brom head coach Tony Pulis believes Chelsea are by far the best team in the Premier League, despite his side getting the better of the new champions.

In an unusual 30-second news conference, during which only Pulis spoke, the Welshman lauded Jose Mourinho's men for their season in which they have been crowned champions and sit eight points clear with a game remaining.

A double from Saido Berahino and a goal from Chris Brunt helped West Brom to an emphatic 3-0 victory, with Chelsea midfielder Cesc Fabregas sent off in the 29th minute.

But Pulis was keen to point out Chelsea's dominance throughout 2014-15, hailing them as easily the top flight's best.

"Obviously we're very, very pleased. It's a great finish," he said.

"We finish 13th in the table but I don't think anything should be taken away from the team we played.

"The team that we've played have been by far the best team in England in the Premier League this year. They've won it by a country mile, and they've been that much better than anybody else.

"Although we've won the game, all the praise, everything else, should go to Jose, his coaching staff, the people at Chelsea and the players."

Mourinho: Cech's future is out of my hands

    petr-cech-chelsea_e2i6o1907npk1ksevzh8l9a2z.jpg

Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho has admitted the future of goalkeeper Petr Cech is out of his hands ahead of the summer transfer window.

Having fallen behind Thibaut Courtois in the pecking order at Stamford Bridge this season, the Czech Republic international has been heavily linked with a move away from the club.

Arsenal, Manchester United and Paris Saint-Germain have all been linked with his signature, and Mourinho understands why Cech may want to leave but he is hopeful he will stay in west London.

"My perfect scenario is that he stays with us. He belongs with this club, and this club belongs to his history and his life," he told TalkSport.

“He’s a fantastic goalkeeper, a fantastic squad man in the dressing room. I tried to prove the respect I have for him by playing him in the FA Cup and Capital One Cup final.

“I played him in the Champions League. I gave him matches in the Premier League.

“I tried to make him feel important, as he is, but I can imagine at 32 or 33, he still feels young and has the passion and desire to play every game.

“If it’s in my hands, he would never go. He would never go to big clubs and fantastic teams, big candidates who want to win the Premier League. I would never let him go, but it’s not in my hands.”

Barca have never faced a team like Juve - Lippi

    marcello-lippi_1pzjegz5agbus1gcrpd5mu8m9g.jpg

Marcello Lippi believes Barcelona will get a shock when they come up against Juventus in the Champions League final. The two sides meet in at the Olympiastadion in Berlin on June 6 as they compete for Europe's most prestigious title.

Lippi believes the newly-crowned Spanish champions are the favourites to win the match, but insists the well organised Serie A side will make it extremely difficult.

"Barcelona are favourites but it won't be a walk in the park," the former Juve and Italy boss was quoted as saying by La Politica nel Pallone. "When a team reaches the final they will not change their characteristics.

"Barcelona have never faced a side as compact and with such a defensive capability as Juventus, who also have the ability to attack when they win the ball.

"Barcelona are still favourites and these extra-terrestrial players they have up front are incredibly good, although against Juventus they will not find it as easy to be as good as they are, nor against one of the strongest goalkeepers in the world."

Having both already been crowned champions of their respective leagues and set to battle in the domestic cup finals before they meet in Germany, both Barca and Juve can win a treble, but Lippi insists there is no point in either side talking about winning a clean sweep of trophies.

"Both teams have won the league and will play in the domestic cup final and then on June 6 they will compete to see who will win the most important trophy. But it not helpful to talk about the treble yet."

:yes:Man United shouldn't celebrate fourth place, admits Smalling

    chris-smalling-five-things-we-learned-manchester-united-v-arsenal_molmdof2jte81x894w57h4rh6.jpg

Manchester United defender Chris Smalling has hit back at claims the Red Devils should celebrate qualifying for the Champions League, insisting that they must target silverware next season.

After Sunday's 1-1 draw, United are likely to finish fourth and face a play-off to reach the group stage of Europe's elite club competition.

But despite securing a spot in the top four as they looked to recover from their seventh-placed finish in 2013-14, the England international does not feel Louis van Gaal's side can be fully satisfied with their campaign.

"It’s not a season where we’re massively celebrating, it’s a step," he told reporters. "Next season we know that won’t be good enough and our fans at the end of the game were terrific.

"Hopefully next season we’ll be having a parade with something to really cheer about.

"I think as the season’s gone on, we’ve got better, but Chelsea’s consistency from day one has won them the title. Sometimes they didn’t play well and still won games - they saw off games like this one against Arsenal.

"They would have probably won it 1-0. Next season it’s a case of starting on the front foot and keeping that consistency.

"In these games you need to get that second goal and unfortunately we didn’t, and we paid the price at the end. All the lads came in and it was almost as though we lost the game.

"Everybody was pretty dejected. We’ve still got another game and then we’ll look back and say that we have performed against the bigger teams.

"It can only look good for next season, when hopefully we’ll be more consistent."

Messi exit will change football forever, says Mourinho

    messi-atletico-madrid-barcelona-18052015_dk94eyoqejem1nfeg84sobs48.jpg

European football will change forever when Lionel Messi leaves Barcelona, according to Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho.

The Argentine has been key to the Catalans' success over the last decade, helping them to three Champions Leagues and six Liga titles among numerous other trophies.

Mourinho, who beat Pep Guardiola's Barca to the Primera Division crown with Real Madrid in 2012, feels that the 27-year-old was the central figure in the Camp Nou club's success.

"In 10 years' time, without Lionel Messi, the map of European football is going to change," he told talkSPORT."What Barcelona have won in the last few years was with Frank Rijkaard, Pep Guardiola and Luis Enrique as coach, but it's always with Messi."

Chelsea were linked with a move for Messi, who was said to be considering his future earlier in the season, but Mourinho was quick to dismiss the reports.
