Sajith shows concern for wildlife
Sajith Premadasa, chairman of the Janasuwaya foundation and Member of Parliament, who is a very keen wildlife conservationist, facilitated the provision of much needed medicine to save a tusked elephant in the wilds of Nawagattegama of the Puttalam district.
The elephant had been shot in several places and had been severely injured due to a large number of gun shots that had been fired at it.
The wildlife authorities that had been short of much needed scarce drugs were provided with the items at short notice by Sajith Premadasa at a cost of SL100,000 namely 100 units of 1gram vials of rocephine .
The pictures illustrate the tusker receiving essential medical treatment by the wild life veterinary surgeons with Sajith Premadasa in attendance.
Once again this episode illustrates the necessity for a comprehensive approach to resolving the human elephant conflict where both parties are able to survive and benefit from each others existence. Presently, there is a deficiency of an integrated approach to resolving this issue. Instead, piecemeal approaches initiated by successive governments have further exaggerated the situation rather than providing a lasting solution.
Of the elephant population today in Sri Lanka, only a mere 6-7% are tuskers where as the comparable figure in India is 90%.
On this occasion too the tusker succumbed to the injuries two days after he was treated.
