Wenger: Man Utd's 'huge' Martial move sums up lack of quality in transfer market

1862832_heroa.jpg

“I’ve heard Martial scored 11 goals in the French championship - that sums it all up well,” Wenger told beIN Sports.

“That means it’s not the money that’s missing at the moment, it’s not the desire of investment that’s missing, it’s the number of players available who can strengthen the big clubs.

“So am I happy with the investment I make? Yes. Every time, I bought [Alexis] Sanchez, I bought [Mesut] Ozil, I bought Cech, I bought Gabriel last year, [Mathieu] Debuchy - when you find the players you invest the money.

“The problem at the moment is to find the players that guarantee that you are a better team after.

Martial is a huge talent, he’s 19 years old, the investment is absolutely huge as well, that shows you that there’s not many players in the world who can strengthen these teams.”

:cool:De Gea considering Man Utd renewal after Real Madrid transfer collapse

    1602562_heroa.jpg

David de Gea could accept the offer of a new long-term contract at Manchester United after the spectacular collapse of his proposed move to Real Madrid on Monday.

The goalkeeper looked destined to join the 10-time European champions in a £29 million deal on the final day of the Spanish transfer window but Madrid submitted the final paperwork for the move 28 minutes after the deadline, leaving the move in tatters, and the two clubs have since blamed each other for the mix-up.

Since Monday's episode De Gea, who was said to be hugely disheartened by the failure of the two clubs to get the deal done, has been in regular contact with his agent, Jorge Mendes, to discuss the possibility of signing a new contract at Old Trafford in a bid to protect his international future.

United originally raised the possibility of a new deal during the 2014-15 season, only for Mendes to insist that De Gea's plan was to leave the club rather than sign again at Old Trafford.

But De Gea has yet to feature this season for United after manager Louis van Gaal deemed the 24-year-old to be lacking in focus amid the constant links with Madrid, and Spain coach Vicente del Bosque has since warned that the keeper cannot expect to be picked for his national side in the lead-up to next summer's Euro 2016 finals if he is not playing regular club football.

As a result De Gea has apparently softened in his stance towards United, and he could agree to a new deal in light of his expiring contract having just 10 months to run.

Such a move could jeopardise any hope he has of eventually signing for Real given the current relationship between the two clubs, but De Gea and Mendes are now said to be very much focusing on the immediate issue of the player's desire to play football.

A renewal for De Gea would also give Keylor Navas - who was due to join United as part of the transfer - further time to establish himself as Madrid's first choice, allowing him the opportunity to win the affections of the Santiago Bernabeu public as club legend Iker Casillas' successor.
De Gea is currently on international duty with Spain ahead of their Euro 2016 qualifiers against Slovakia on Saturday and Macedonia on Tuesday, and the former Atletico Madrid goalkeeper spent much of Tuesday chatting to club and international colleague Juan Mata in an attempt to clear his mind after Monday's dramatic turn of events.

And in a press conference on Wednesday, coach Del Bosque confirmed that De Gea's mood has lightened since arriving with La Roja.

"He is calm," Del Bosque insisted. "He is a couple of days removed from it all now. Now he is focused on the national team and he is being very professional. It is good for him to be here. His personality could even benefit from this because in times of stress you can come out performing much better."

De Gea should be happy with transfer saga - Del Bosque

    david-de-geas-manchester-united-career-in-pictures_30obac9m3da918dzb0s1xgb06.jpg

Vicente Del Bosque believes David de Gea should be happy following his ill-fated summer transfer saga because two of Europe's greatest clubs value him so highly.
The Manchester United goalkeeper appeared set to join Real Madrid on the final day of the Spanish transfer window, only for administrative errors to prevent his dream move going through sparking a furious war of words between both clubs.

De Gea is yet to play for his club this season with Louis van Gaal claiming the former Atletico Madrd star lacked the right focus but Del Bosque insists the 24-year-old, who Goal understands is ready to consider the option of extending his current contract, should feel content in the knowledge he is a wanted man. "He must be happy because two major clubs are after him. I have not talked to him alone. What he has to do is to train. He is in a good place surrounded by his team-mates," said the Spain national team manager.

Del Bosque did warn De Gea that he would need to win his first team place back from Sergio Romero, who has started all six games for United so far this season, if he is to be considered for Spain's Euro 2016 selection but insisted the player is in good spirits ahead of the upcoming matches against Macedonia and Slovakia
"[Jose Manuel] Ochotorena has told me that he looks good. It is a joy because he is comfortable and at ease. He's also surrounded by [Juan] Mata, another nice guy, which will be a help."

Manchester United labelled 'embarrassing' over Martial and De Gea deals

    louis-van-gaal-on_1mc3ilcbyqfru1n00ia2udwnd9.jpg

Former Arsenal defender Martin Keown has labelled Manchester United's deadline day dealings "embarrassing".

The club spent £36 million on 19-year-old Monaco forward Anthony Martial and then became embroiled in a dispute with Real Madrid after David de Gea's move to the Bernabeu fell through.

The episode unfolded on the back of United's 2-1 defeat to Swansea in the Premier League on Sunday and Keown believes it has cast the club in a bad light.
"It felt like United were rolling the dice on deadline day," he wrote in his column for the Daily Mail. "It is hard to imagine that kind of soap opera happening under Sir Alex Ferguson and David Gill. It was embarrassing."

New signing Martial has been compared to Arsenal great Thierry Henry, but Keown - who played alongside the striker during his time at the club - said the move is a big risk.

"The signing of Anthony Martial is a huge gamble," he continued. "He has been compared to Thierry Henry and if he is half as good then he will be a decent player.

"Van Gaal likes a pacey ball-carrier — he had Arjen Robben at Bayern Munich and tried and failed to make Angel di Maria that man at United — and Martial fits the bill.

"He might even be the answer to their striker dilemma but it is still a big risk to take on an uncapped youngster."

Keown also offered his thoughts over the transfer saga involving De Gea - whose move to Madrid fell through after the necessary paperwork wasn't processed before the deadline."Banishing him to the reserves will have done nothing to encourage him to stay. The international break now means things can start to settle down but De Gea, who stayed professional throughout the saga, must surely play on his return," he added.

"You also wonder whether Van Gaal’s treatment of De Gea and fellow Spanish keeper Victor Valdes had any influence on why one-time target Pedro ended up at Chelsea.

"We do not see what happens in the dressing room but it is a concern when former players queue up to criticise Van Gaal’s ruthless treatment. Once a relationship is broken, there seems to be no going back."

Arsenal & Wenger facing transfer backlash

    1843482_heroa.jpg

Arsenal’s Supporters Trust is set to lodge a formal complaint with the club over their lack of signings in the transfer window.

The Gunners, who signed Petr Cech from Chelsea in a deal worth around £10 million in June, were the only Premier League club not to sign an outfield player in the summer after a protracted pursuit of Karim Benzema came to nothing.

The failure to acquire the Real Madrid striker capped a frustrating window for Gunners fans, and the fan group is set to outline its concerns over the club’s recruitment policy in the coming days.

"Arsenal are in a very strong financial position and it is of course disappointing that the transfer window has closed with just the signing of Petr Cech,” a statement read.

"Arsenal have built a strong squad and just one or two more good additions would have strengthened the chances of winning a first title in 11 years.

"No one wants Arsenal to buy players just for the sake of it, but we do want to see the money being invested to make the club stronger.

"This isn’t an issue that affects just one transfer window and seems to indicate a wider structural issue. In recent years Arsenal have overhauled both their Academy and their medical set-up.

"We urge the board to now open a full review into its arrangements for scouting and purchasing players. A review of this type is a good governance practice and can only help Arsenal to become a stronger club.

"The AST will be raising this with the Arsenal board."

Ozil: I need a bigger ego to win Ballon d'Or

    1827622_heroa.jpg

Arsenal star Mesut Ozil believes he needs to be more selfish if he is to achieve his ambition of winning the Ballon d’Or.

Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo, who took the Argentine’s crown as the best player in the world in January, have won the award every year since 2010 on the back of their record breaking goalscoring exploits.

Ozil scored just five times in 32 games for Arsenal last season and has been challenged by Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger to reach double figures this time around, and the former Real Madrid playmaker admits he needs to be more ruthless in front of goal if he is to gain personal recognition.

"I have to become more dangerous in front of the goal," he said when asked about winning the individual accolade.

"I was injured for long spells last season, and scored only five in 32 competitive games. I want to improve this. To achieve it, I have to be a bit more egotistical."

Ozil missed Arsenal’s victory over Newcastle last weekend with a minor knee injury but has been included as part of Joachim Low’s Germany squad ahead of their Euro 2016 qualifiers against Poland and Scotland.

Bayern pulled out of De Bruyne deal - agent

    kevin-de-bruyne-wolfsburg_1bwpswyqm7z6r19gnqahixjchh.jpg

Kevin De Bruyne's agent has revealed Bayern Munich were interested in signing his client before pulling out of a deal earlier this summer.

The midfielder left Wolfsburg for Manchester City in a €74 million transfer, but the Premier League club faced competition for his signature prior to sealing the move.
"We had heard that Bayern were interested so I phoned the club," Patrick de Koster told Sporza.be.

"Things then accelerated quickly over the next two days but then Bayern decided not to go ahead with the transfer."I didn't use Bayern to drive up the price - I'm not a carpet salesman. PSG were also interested, but City won the race."

De Koster also revealed how City rolled out the red carpet to ensure they got their star man."It was impressive, as in a movie," he continued. "We flew there with private jets, were picked up in limousines..."

"We also thought we would have a lot of work to find a new home, open a bank account, arrange phone, a car ... but in three hours it was all arranged. Unbelievable."

Griezmann targets Messi and Ronaldo goal hauls

    antoine-griezmann-atletico-madrid-shanghai-friendly_lramslexikn01fx1hgk6o8utm.jpg

Atletico Madrid forward Antoine Griezmann has revealed he wants to score the same number of goals as Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi.

The France international ended last season as Atleti's top goalscorer after finding the back of the net 22 times in La Liga, but his tally was dwarfed by the Real Madrid and Barcelona stars.

Griezmann ended the campaign as La Liga's fourth highest scorer, with Ronaldo (48), Messi (43) and Neymar (22) taking the top three positions in the charts, but he hopes to close the gap this term.

He told AS: "I do not know the number of goals that I will score, but I want to score more than 25 goals this season and beat last season's total. I'm working to reach Messi and Ronaldo."

The 24-year-old is currently on international duty with France and offered his backing to team-mate Karim Benzema, who was again linked with a move away from Madrid this summer.

"Benzema is often questioned, every year the same things are said," he added.

"The club bought [Gareth Bale] and [James Rodriguez] last summer but he is still there because he's always in the right position to score goals."

Boateng: Everyone at Bayern wants Guardiola to stay

    1864962_heroa.jpg

Jerome Boateng says the Bayern Munich squad are desperate for Pep Guardiola to remain at the club amid speculation over his future.

The former Barcelona boss has won two Bundesliga titles, one DFB-Pokal, the Uefa Super Cup and the Fifa Club World Cup since taking over in Bavaria in 2013.

Speculation persists that he may be tempted by a move to the Premier League, however, with Manchester City repeatedly mooted as potential suitors.

Boateng, though, insists that he and his team-mates are keen for Guardiola to remain at the Allianz Arena.

Speaking in an exclusive interview with Goal, the defender said: “It's hard to say. My feeling is, that he gives everything for the club. We notice that in the training.

“He wants to make everyone better and make us better as a team. That's the priority at the moment.

“He, his family and the people from FC Bayern must decide what will happen in the future. We all want him to stay.”

Guardiola has endured a somewhat frosty relationship with the media in recent months, but Boateng insists that the Spaniard is different behind the scenes.

"He is very ambitious and lives football. All the rest isn't true. Many things come from the people outside the club. For us, that is no issue,” he added.

“But I think, it's normal how he reacts, because the people don't see how we train and work.

“They don’t take in our discussions and don’t know how we want to play. I think some of them should restrain a little bit.”

Arsenal striker Welbeck undergoes knee surgery

    1050552_heroa.jpg

Arsenal have confirmed that Danny Welbeck has undergone knee surgery after failing to sufficiently overcome an injury picked up in April.

The north London club had hoped they would not need to resort to surgery and the injury would heal over time, but the England international has finally gone under the knife and will be out of action for several months.

"Danny Welbeck has undergone surgery on his left knee after being unable to sufficiently step up his rehabilitation work," a club statement read.

"The striker has been working throughout the summer to recover from the injury sustained at the end of April.

"It had been hoped he would avoid surgery but after increasing his training workload, the injury to his cartilage did not respond as well as hoped and the decision was taken last week for him to undergo surgery by a leading specialist in the field.

"Danny is now expected to be out for a period of months and everyone at Arsenal wishes him well."

Arsene Wenger had previously expressed his hope that Welbeck would return after the international break, but his lay-off has now been extended.

The forward last featured for the club on April 26, when the Gunners drew 0-0 with Chelsea.

Costa: Robben row hasn't put me off showboating

    1862932_heroa.jpg

Douglas Costa has insisted that he would repeat the showboating skills he showed during Bayern Munich's 3-0 win over Bayer Leverkusen if given the chance, despite an argument with winger Arjen Robben.

The Brazilian, who joined the club from Shakhtar Donetsk in the summer, produced an audacious trick in the closing stages of the club’s 3-0 win over Bayer Leverkusen, and was subsequently reprimanded by the Dutchman.

Costa, though, remains unruffled by the criticism and says it has not put him off such displays of skill.

"There is a lot of talk about what I discussed with Robben,” he said. “After the game he told me that he knows the quality of Brazilian footballers, but also advised me to be careful with such tricks in German football because the audience and the opposing players in the Bundesliga do not like it.

"I thanked him and told him that I will make it up to him when the chance to do such a thing comes around again.

“I think that's part of the game and part of Brazilian football."

Pastore: Juventus wanted to sign me this summer

    1646492_heroa.jpg

Paris-Saint Germain midfielder Javier Pastore has revealed that Juventus tried to sign him during the summer, but insists he has no intention of leaving France.

Serie A champions Juve have been forced to re-build their squad following the departures of Carlos Tevez, Arturo Vidal and Andrea Pirlo, with the likes of Mario Mandzukic, Sami Khedira and Hernanes all arriving in Turin.

Pastore has revealed he too was a target of Massimiliano Allegri, who was long linked with signing a No.10, though neither the Argentine playmaker nor PSG were keen for him to move to Italy.

And the Argentina international - who signed a new deal at Parc des Princes in June - is now looking forward to helping the Ligue 1 champions improve, and praised the arrival of international team-mate Angel Di Maria from Manchester United.

"I was approached by Juventus,” he told ESPN Radio. "But Paris Saint-Germain never had any intention of selling me, and I had no intention to go away and to leave France.

"Since I arrived the team has grown a lot, every year quality reinforcements come in.

"[Angel] Di Maria for example, I’m pleased with his arrival, we understand each other well on the pitch. He’s an incredible player who can make the difference by himself."

Kaka: I didn’t know if I would get another Brazil chance

    kaka-brazil-training-31082015_nlxctt5bx0wg1tq3hlk85216a.jpeg

Kaka admits he was worried he wouldn’t get another chance with Brazil.
The 33-year-old was a surprise inclusion in Dunga’s squad for this month’s Chevrolet Brasil Global Tour double-header with Costa Rica and USA, having not appeared for the Selecao since October 2014.

And the former Fifa World Player of the year says he is ready to grab his unexpected second chance with both hands.

“I didn’t not know if I would get another chance in the squad,” he told reporters in New Jersey. “But I knew that if the chance came I would have to be prepared. And I am.

“I'm fine physically. It has been a long time since I had physical problems,” added the veteran, whose time with Real Madrid between 2009 and 2013 was dogged by persistent injury.

“I feel confident technically and I am prepared for these games. If I have a chance to play you will see how much I can still contribute to the national team.”

The 2002 World Cup winner went on to insist captain Neymar, who will miss October’s two World Cup qualifier through suspension, is a special talent who needs the full support of his country.

“Neymar is such a talented player. He has shown fantastic growth and development and has a very promising future. “He is a gem that needs to be well looked after because players like him are very rare.”

Kaka will hope to make his Brazil return on Saturday when the Selecao meet Costa Rica at Red Bull Arena.

Del Bosque: Valdes remains in Spain's plans

    1430302_heroa.jpg

Spain manager Vincente Del Bosque has admitted Victor Valdes remains in his thoughts despite being frozen out at Manchester United.

The former Barcelona goalkeeper was left out of United's pre-season tour after angering manager Louis van Gaal for refusing to play in an Under-21 match last season, and he has been forced to watch from the stands for the Red Devils' opening six games of the campaign.

Valdes was heavily linked with a move to Besiktas, but changed his Facebook cover photo to the United logo late in the window, suggesting he was set to stay at Old Trafford and had reconciled with Van Gaal.

But the 33-year-old has since been left out of United's squad for the Champions League group stages, with David de Gea, Sergio Romero and Sam Johnstone selected ahead of him.

Regardless of club troubles, Del Bosque revealed that Valdes remains in his plans, despite selecting De Gea, Iker Casillas and Sergio Rico for his most recent squad to face Slovakia and Macedonia.

"We were very close to calling Victor Valdes, he has always done well for the national team," he told La Sexta.

"I know that the national team is not a charity but maybe he needed a lift and in the end we didn't give it to him.

"Maybe we have even been cowards. I think we are all people and we have to have feelings."

'Pique and Ramos are the best centre-backs in the world' - Bartra

Spain duo Sergio Ramos and Gerard Pique are the best central defenders in the world, according to team-mate Marc Bartra.

The Barcelona defender has been called up to Vicente Del Bosque's squad for the upcoming Euro 2016 qualifiers against Slovakia and Macedonia despite failing to start either of Barcelona's opening two Liga clashes.

And the 24-year-old believes current partnership Ramos and Pique will be difficult to break apart due to their ability and experience.

"I'm really happy to be in the squad. I've spent years climbing through the youth ranks to get here and now I'm working on playing in the senior team.

"I'm really thrilled. The challenges are getting greater, as is my excitement. I feel I have the support of both my team-mates and the gaffer.

"It's a thrilling challenge to give 200 percent to improve my game, develop as a player and stamp my mark on the national team. I'm exactly where I want to be, in the first team at Barcelona and in the Spain squad."

:)Valdes included in Man Utd's Premier League squad

    895992_heroa.jpg

Goalkeeper Victor Valdes has been included in Manchester United's Premier League squad despite seemingly being frozen out at Old Trafford.

The former Barcelona man was left out of United's pre-season tour of the USA after angering Louis van Gaal by refusing to play in an Under-21 match last season.

The Spain international was then stripped of his squad number and has not been included in the matchday squad for any of the Red Devils' six games this campaign.

Despite being linked with Besiktas, he remains with the 20-time English champions, though he was left out of their Champions League group stage squad.

Despite that, he will be available to play domestic football should Van Gaal require him this season after being named as one of 21 players registered to play in the Premier League.

He is joined by fellow goalkeepers Sergio Romero, Sam Johnstone and compatriot David de Gea, who himself is yet to make an appearance this term but could be reintroduced into the fold after his move to Real Madrid fell through.

Manchester United's Premier League squad in full

Goalkeepers: David de Gea, Sam Johnstone, Sergio Romero, Victor Valdes

Defenders: Daley Blind, Matteo Darmian, Phil Jones, Marcos Rojo, Chris Smalling, Antonio Valencia, Guillermo Varela

Midfielders: Michael Carrick, Marouane Fellaini, Ander Herrera, Jesse Lingard, Juan Mata, Morgan Schneiderlin, Bastian Schweinsteiger, Ashley Young

    Strikers: Will Keane, Wayne Rooney

The likes of Memphis Depay, Anthony Martial, Luke Shaw and James Wilson are not included as clubs are not required to name players under the age of 21.
