Ranieri delight for 'fantastic man' Vardy

    jamievardyclaudioranieri-cropped_1cqick3yacnqv1nhivxhkn59cq.jpg

Leicester City manager Claudio Ranieri lauded Jamie Vardy's record-breaking exploits as an "incredible achievement" after the England striker scored for an 11th consecutive Premier League match in Saturday's 1-1 draw against Manchester United.

Vardy's 24th-minute opener at the King Power Stadium saw the 28-year-old surpass the previous record of 10 set by former United striker Ruud van Nistelrooy.

Bastian Schweinsteiger headed an equaliser during first-half stoppage time and the result leaves Leicester second on goal difference behind Manchester City, with United a point further back in third.

"I am very happy because before the match I told my players we have two objectives; one, to win the match and two, try to help Vardy achieve the record," Ranieri told Sky Sports.

"We take one point, it's good for the table and Jamie breaks the record. It has been a very good evening."

Asked about Vardy's heroics, the Italian tactician hailed a "fantastic man".

"It's an incredible achievement. Five years ago, Jamie played in the lower leagues and it's difficult to grow up so quickly," he said.

"This fantastic man is not only our top scorer, but he works hard and it's important when you have a striker who attacks the ball, who presses."

Leicester's goal came from one of their now customarily lightning-quick counter-attacks.

By contrast, United played in the slower, methodical manner that has drawn criticism for manager Louis van Gaal.

Ranieri believes the Dutchman is doing a fine job at Old Trafford, but stated that United are a different beast to the one he knew under Alex Ferguson during the Italian's time in charge of Chelsea.

"It's a different Man Utd, a different manager, everything is different," he added.

"I am different, but I think Van Gaal is doing a very good job. Last season he got to know the players and now he is very close to the top of the table. He will fight until the end."

Thiago Silva planning to retire at Paris Saint-Germain

    thiago-silva-cropped_1axl1r2mmu674142qxyehafgbv.jpg

Thiago Silva is hoping to remain at Paris Saint-Germain for the rest of his career.

The Brazilian joined the Ligue 1 club from AC Milan in 2012 and has since won every domestic trophy on offer, including three league titles.

His contract is due to expire in 2018, but the 31-year-old is hoping he will not have to leave the club until he hangs up his boots.

"I want to finish my career here," he said. "I need to speak with the president [Nasser Al Khelaifi] to see if he agrees or not.

"This is the city that I love, like Rio de Janeiro. I live with my family, my son grows up here. There is everything you need to live. This is a great city. Life must go on [after the Paris terrorist attacks].

"[The tributes] have been difficult, especially when we remember those images. The atmosphere was superb today. When you have a problem in your country, people are together, and that's very important for France."

PSG are on course for a fourth consecutive Ligue 1 title after a 4-1 win over Troyes on Saturday sent them 15 points clear at the top of the table.

AC Milan 4-1 Sampdoria: Niang scores twice as Rossoneri ease to three points

    2318832_heroa.jpg

M'Baye Niang put in a man-of-the-match performance to help AC Milan to a 4-1 Serie A win over Sampdoria at San Siro on Saturday, scoring two and setting up one more.

Sinisa Mihajlovic's men were fortunate not to go 1-0 behind early on when Roberto Soriano failed to take advantage of Gianluigi Donnarumma's mistake.

It was all Milan from thereon, though, and Giacomo Bonaventura opened the scoring after a sublime assist from Niang.

The Frenchman then converted a spot-kick for his first Milan league goal, adding a second after the break following an error from Emiliano Viviano.

Luiz Adriano rubbed further salt in the visitors' wounds in the 78th minute, with Eder's last-gasp penalty offering scant consolation to Vincenzo Montella's men.

Sampdoria nearly went a goal up within 30 seconds after Donnarumma got himself into trouble from a back-pass. The Milan goalkeeper hesitated too long and Soriano picked up his poor clearance, immediately firing a shot toward the empty goal, only for the 16-year-old to redeem himself with a superb save.

Alessio Cerci was denied by an offside flag in the ninth minute after tapping home the rebound from Carlos Bacca's powerful shot, but the home side did grab the lead soon after.

Niang went past his marker down the right before sending in a perfect cross for Bonaventura, who blasted home from close range.

Bacca then tried his luck with an ambitious effort from 20 yards out on the half-hour mark, but the Colombia international saw his volley go just wide of the target.

Milan doubled their lead in the 38th minute when Niang converted a penalty. Lorenzo De Silvestri pulled Bonaventura to the ground inside the area, leaving referee Daniele Doveri no other option but to award a spot-kick, and the 20-year-old confidently stepped up and found the net with a powerful attempt.

Niang nearly made it three shortly after the break with an acrobatic backheel after Cerci's free-kick, but Viviano did well to push the ball wide for a corner.

The Sampdoria goalkeeper handed Niang a gilt-edged chance to get his second goal of the game in the 49th minute with a sloppy goal kick and the in-form attacker happily accepted Viviano's present, making it 3-0 with a calm finish.

Bonaventura came close to scoring his second of the game after a superb cross from Ignazio Abate, but Viviano managed to keep his volley out in two attempts.

The former Atalanta man again tried his luck halfway through the second half from a free-kick, yet his curled shot over the wall went just wide.

Substitute Luiz Adriano should have made it four in the 77th minute, but the Brazilian aimed wide from five yards out.

The former Shakhtar Donetsk did get his goal shortly after, though. He controlled Cerci's cross with his chest before firing in a volley from inside the area.

Eder pulled one back from the spot in the 87th minute after being fouled in the area by Andrea Poli, but it mattered little.

Van Gaal: My strikers weren’t running in behind… but Vardy is fantastic

    wayne-rooney-leicester-city-manchester-united-premier-league-28112015_1t5wlxiqliwe714hfsx5efirz1.jpg

Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal has admitted he grew frustrated by his strikers' lack of runs behind the Leicester City defence during their 1-1 draw but praised the performance of Jamie Vardy.

Wayne Rooney had not scored in three Premier League games going into the clash at the King Power Stadium and again struggled to make an impact, while Anthony Martial has not netted in the Premier League since September.

Rooney was withdrawn for Memphis Depay in the second half but Van Gaal says he might have taken off Martial had his captain not started limping.

"Wayne Rooney was limping and that is why I changed him," the Dutchman told BBC Sport . "I already wanted to change one of the strikers because they were not always running in behind.

"There were some times when if we were quick we had space to do that, but we didn't so that is why I wanted to bring Memphis in. Maybe I would have changed [Anthony] Martial [if Rooney was not injured]."

When asked about Vardy's performance and scoring record, Van Gaal enthused: "Amazing and fantastic. The goal he scored is also amazing because it is not so easy. I can say our organisation is bad, but he is provoking that also.

"It is a fantastic record to have, 11 matches in a row. Not many players will do that."

Hernandez is already breaking records after his Manchester United exit

    1935382_heroa.jpg

Javier Hernandez is showing a new lease of life at Bayer Leverkusen, while Manchester United are struggling to find the back of the net.

Louis van Gaal's side followed up Tuesday's lifeless stalemate against PSV with another display that lacked any punch in Saturday's 1-1 draw with Leicester City.

Meanwhile, Hernandez, who was deemed unworthy of leading the line at Old Trafford and sold in the summer, has hit the ground running in the Bundesliga, and is already breaking records.

By finding the net in seven consecutive matches for Leverkusen this season, Hernandez surpassed Real Madrid legend Hugo Sanchez, who was the only Mexican in European football to score in six successive games across all competitions.
