Ramos: Modric is the backbone of Madrid

    lukamodric-cropped_1l9ahou7mpfvn1v7gykbq59hzm.jpg

Real Madrid captain Sergio Ramos believes Luka Modric is pivotal to the club's ambitions this season after the midfielder scored the winner in Sunday's 2-1 win away to Granada.Modric popped up in the 85th minute and secured maximum points for Madrid after Granada's Youssef El-Arabi cancelled out Karim Benzema's first-half opener.

The goal was Modric's first La Liga goal this season and just his second in all competitions, with Zinedine Zidane calling on the Croatia international to shoot more often afterwards.

And Ramos went on to reiterate his coach's comments, stating the 30-year-old had the potential to deliver match-winning moments and become a key member of the squad.

"His goal today makes him more visible, but for me what he brings to the game is a must," Ramos told Movistar Plus. "He's never marked out much, but he is the backbone of the team."

Ramos bemoaned his side's lack of killer instinct in front of goal but was relieved it did not cost them two more points as Madrid continued to struggle for fluency away from home.

Madrid trail league leaders Barcelona by four points having played a game more.
"We had chances to kill the game but we didn't and it was difficult for us then," he reflected. "In the end, the team persisted and Luka scored a great goal to give us the three points.

"People have the image of us at the Bernabeu mastering games, pressing up and today there was not much of that, but there are positive conclusions to draw."We have to keep getting better."Ramos was also keen to praise Benzema after he continued his hot-streak in front of goal after scoring 11 goals in nine league games.

"His streak is good for us, he could have scored a second, but still he's a tremendous joy," Ramos said. "At his best he is a unique player."

Barcelona relaxed over Neymar situation - Fernandez

Barcelona director of football Robert Fernandez is confident the club will wrap up the contract renewal of Neymar and says they stand by him after an incident at his birthday party.

The world and European champions are looking to secure the long-term future of the Brazilian star amid reported interest from archrivals Real Madrid.

The player's father grabbed headlines during Neymar's 24th birthday party on Friday after he clashed with journalists, insisting they should leave him alone.
Barca issued a statement shortly afterwards, demanding respect from Spanish media, and Fernandez insists the attacker is happy at the club, as is his father.

"Neymar and his management are very happy and we are very relaxed," he told Marca.

"The club stands by the player. These things happen and we shouldn't dwell on it.

"The important thing is that he is happy and that's something we can see in every game he plays."

Sunday's 2-0 win over Levante ensured Barca remain three points ahead of Atletico Madrid and a further point ahead of Real Madrid, though the Catalans have a game in hand over their rivals.

And Fernandez was delighted to see Luis Enrique's men emerge triumphant despite difficult conditions.

"It was a difficult game because the weather was not good. What bothers the player is the wind. But the team was solid against an intense rival. We have to be satisfied.

"We have to keep working and playing well."

Guardiola took Bayern for a ride - Hamann

    pepguardiola-cropped_n0fsfmpbhrtg14p3dvvu1fv69.jpg

Former Bayern Munich midfielder Dietmar Hamann has criticised Pep Guardiola for not informing the Bundesliga champions of his intention to leave the club until December 2015, after months of speculation over his future.

The former Barcelona coach will leave Bayern for Manchester City at the end of the 2015-16 campaign after three years in charge of the Bavarians, despite their desire to hold on to him.

And Hamann has hit out at the 45-year-old, insisting he should have told Bayern of his plans to move on at a much earlier stage.

"Guardiola took Bayern for a ride, in my opinion," Hamann told Sky.

"The whole situation was not what you normally see at Bayern. I was surprised to see Bayern let this happen."I think Bayern lost a bit of respect for Guardiola, because he did not always show his cards. Bayern will have a different view now than they did about six weeks ago.

"They gave their coach more power than even before over the past two years, perhaps without even realising it themselves. It was almost considered blasphemy if you criticised Pep. He was regarded as a saint.

"I will not go as far as to say they backed the wrong horse, but the Champions League will be the ultimate test. If they crash out again like in the last two years, Pep's era at the club will have been good, but not great."

:yes:Bilic: Klopp will be back - he is a leader

    slavenbilicjurgenklopp-cropped_disy4j1jtg961rj17seqxz5eo.jpg

West Ham manager Slaven Bilic expects to see Liverpool counterpart Jurgen Klopp alongside him on the touchline for Tuesday's FA Cup fourth-round replay at Upton Park.Klopp missed his side's 2-2 Premier League draw at Anfield on Saturday due to a suspected bout of appendicitis.

The Reds subsequently let a two-goal lead slip as Sunderland battled back for a point in their fight against relegation.

But Bilic believe Klopp's reputation as a fierce competitor, rather than any reaction to Liverpool's latest setback, will see him in the dugout in east London.

"I don't think Klopp will be back because of the pressure. He will be back because he is like that. He is the leader," Bilic told reporters.

"He is Jurgen Klopp and is a successful man. He likes to work. For him this is natural and he wants to be back."Daniel Sturridge could return from his latest bout of fitness woes for Liverpool, having been an unused substitute at the Sunderland match.

Even if the England man is not involved, Bilic believes the Merseyside club have ample qualities to hurt West Ham – who held them to a goalless draw in the initial tie following a pair of wins in their Premier League encounters this season.

"We are well prepared for whatever team they come with. We will know that one hour before the game and it is not a big problem," he said."If it is not Sturridge, it will be Christian Benteke. They have a lot of good strikers and the difference is the midfield.

"Liverpool are a big club and have had their ups and downs this season. Make no mistake you have to close them down and can't give them time."When you have the ball you need to be brave and direct and we have showed that in two out of the three games we have played against them."

    'Ronaldo will keep breaking records'

    cristianoronaldo-cropped_j31zbuxuor8g1n6p12t21vptr.jpg

Real Madrid legend Hugo Sanchez says Cristiano Ronaldo will continue break goalscoring records, despite some critics suggesting he his past his best.

Ronaldo has netted 30 goals in 29 appearances in all competitions for Madrid this season, but has been criticised on more than one occasion for failing to produce in big games.

The 31-year-old was quiet throughout Madrid's 2-1 win over Granada on Sunday and some have suggested he is now past his best.

However, Sanchez is adamant Ronaldo remains the club's main man and has backed him to keep making the difference.

"Ronaldo is a very competitive player and this is why he will continue to break records," Sanchez was quoted as saying by Marca.

"I don't mind that he broke my record, because he is a Madridista.

"Cristiano is still the main man in Madrid's attack."Earlier this season, Ronaldo broke Sanchez's goalscoring record at Madrid before later surpassing Raul as the club's all-time top scorer.

:cool:Mata 'deeply grateful' for Chelsea fans' reaction

Manchester United's Juan Mata revealed he was touched by the reception he received from Chelsea supporters at Stamford Bridge during Sunday's 1-1 draw in the Premier League.

The Spain international, who played for the Blues between 2011 and 2014, was given thunderous applause by home supporters when he came off to be replaced by Ander Herrera in stoppage time.

Mata was swift to acknowledge the Chelsea fans after the match, which ended level after Diego Costa's last-gasp equaliser cancelled out Jesse Lingard's opener.

"It is always special for me to play in Stamford Bridge," he wrote in his blog.

"My feelings are different in a day like this, but once the referee blows the whistle for the kick-off, in my mind the only goal is to win, to give everything you have to help the team and to enjoy on the pitch."I have to say that I am deeply grateful for the reception from the Chelsea fans and their applause when I was substituted."

Costa's leveller means United, who sit fifth, are six points behind Manchester City in fourth and 12 adrift of leaders Leicester City.

Louis van Gaal's men only have four points from their last three league games, but Mata thinks they are on the brink of a strong run of form."From the first minute we went for the victory and played good football, but unfortunately we let slip two points in the last few moments," added the 27-year-old.

"We are improving our game lately and I'm sure this is the way to get a series of good results in the next few weeks. The team is playing with more determination and confidence, and we want to keep it this way."

Messi undergoes further tests for kidney problems

    lionel-messi-cropped_2nar0nlnqkbc1ed7xg63fnfgw.jpg

Barcelona have confirmed that Lionel Messi is undergoing further tests on kidney problems which first emerged in December but expect the forward to return to training on Wednesday.

The Argentina international missed part of the Club World Cup in Japan as a result of renal colic, an abdominal discomfort commonly caused by kidney stones.

Reports emerged in Spain on Monday suggesting Messi could face minor surgery in order to correct the problem, which has reportedly persisted in recent weeks despite the 28-year-old missing only one match since the turn of the year.

"Leo Messi will be submitted for different tests on Monday and Tuesday to assess the development of the kidney problems suffered in December," a Barcelona statement read.

"On Wednesday the player will return to training with the first team."Messi could be rested for the Copa del Rey semi-final second leg against Valencia on Wednesday as Barca hold a 7-0 aggregate lead.

:(Januzaj limps out of Man Utd Under-21 game

    2291102_heroa.jpg

Adnan Januzaj has limped out of Manchester United Under-21s' clash against Norwich City with a suspected hamstring injury.

Januzaj was picked by Warren Joyce for the meeting with the Canaries along with the likes of Memphis Depay, Phil Jones and Sergio Romero.

But the former Borussia Dortmund loanee failed to complete the first half and was replaced by Matthew Willock after 33 minutes after failing to run off the problem.

In a further blow to the home side, defender Guillermo Varela sustained a similar injury and was replaced by Timothy Fosu-Mensah, with both players heading straight down the tunnel instead of taking their places on the bench.

The injuries come at a particularly troublesome time for United, with Luke Shaw, Antonio Valencia, Marcos Rojo, Ashley Young and Bastian Schweinsteiger all currently sidelined.

Questioning Ronaldo is an insult - Aduriz

    if-footballers-were-nfl-starscristiano-ronaldo_f3davsn90jli1hnmntl5dbmhm.jpg

Athletic Bilbao striker Aritz Aduriz claims questions over Cristiano Ronaldo 's form in La Liga are "insulting" to the Real Madrid forward.

Ronaldo has scored 30 goals in 29 games in all competitions this season but doubts over his form have been raised in 2016, with the Portugal captain failing to find the net in four of his last six league matches.

The 31-year-old was disappointing in Madrid's 2-1 win over Granada on Sunday but Aduriz, who has scored 25 goals in all competitions this term, says neither Ronaldo nor Lionel Messi should questioned given their respective records.

"Can Cristiano be questioned? It seems like an insult to me. We can't question him for anything in the world," he said, as quoted by AS .

"We're very spoiled [with Messi and Ronaldo]. Their numbers are astronomical."

Aduriz's own form has led to growing calls in Spain for Vicente del Bosque to include him in his squad for Euro 2016, and the head coach stated last month that he could not rule any player out of contention.

But the former Valencia striker, who turns 35 this week, says his focus is firmly on continuing to perform well for Athletic in their fight for European qualification.

"It's not only me who can answer this question. The important thing is to do well for the team and what has to happen will happen," he added.

"Of course there are players and strikers who are doing incredible things. The level is very high and that's good for La Liga and everybody.

"I have a lot of respect and admiration for the coach."

:cool:Keane upstages Memphis with staggering FIVE-GOAL haul

    2657512_heroa.jpg

Will Keane scored a staggering five goals as Manchester United Under-21s thumped Norwich City 7-0 on Monday evening.

The England youth international was joined on the pitch by such senior stars as Memphis Depay and Adnan Januzaj but upstaged his more acclaimed team-mates with his rampant showing.

Keane netted twice in the first-half, the second of which came from a Memphis assist, before completing his second hat-trick of the season in the 47th minute.

Andreas Pereira then bagged United's fourth from the penalty spot before Keane scored the goal of the game with a delightful chip just after the hour mark.

Timothy Fosu-Mensah added a sixth with 20 minutes to go, and Keane then rounded off the rout just a few moments later.

Watch Keane's best strike below, as he takes on two Norwich defenders before sending an impudent lob over the Canaries' stranded goalkeeper.

Keane will now hope for a chance to reproduce this form for the senior side when they travel to Sunderland on Saturday.

'Guardiola should have joined Man Utd'

    pepguardiola-cropped_19jr7j420hhlgzxixg1e57f3g.jpg

Former Barcelona forward Jordi Cruyff admits that he has been left disappointed with Pep Guardiola's decision to join Manchester City instead of Manchester United.

Guardiola has agreed to join City on a three-year contract when he leaves Bayern Munich at the end of the 2015-16 season.

Cruyff, though, insists he would have preferred to see him choose Premier League rivals United, with Red Devils' boss Louis van Gaal coming under increasing pressure at Old Trafford.

"I would have liked Pep at United – they have more tradition than City," he told Esports Cope.

"It is a good moment to work at City, though, because they have the set-up, the money and the will to create a good team."

With Guardiola moving to City, the club have been heavily linked with a summer move for Neymar, while it was recently claimed that United had tabled a bid of €190 million for the Brazilian.

The Barca attacker's current deal is due to expire in 2018 and Cruyff is keen for the star to remain in Catalonia.

Cruyff said: "There is a mix between romanticism to always play for the same club and tempting offers from elsewhere. Money is very powerful.

"We already know Neymar's situation at Barca is very good, but there are always better [offers]. I hope he stays."

Rooney leaps to Depay defence after Chelsea error

    memphis-depay-cropped_qm9nqfymo8f91r8haqzlsunf6.jpg

Wayne Rooney insists that Memphis Depay should not be blamed for the late Diego Costa goal which denied Manchester United a win at Chelsea on Sunday.

The Netherlands international - a late substitute at Stamford Bridge - misplaced a simple pass to Morgan Schneiderlin during a swift United break, and Chelsea subsequently launched an attack of their own, with Costa able to round David De Gea and slot home to snatch a point.

The incident drew scathing criticism from some fans and compounded what has been a miserable few months for Depay, in which he has lost his place in Louis van Gaal's side following some disappointing performances.

But Rooney has refused to lay the blame squarely at the 21-year-old's feet, saying: "I think we're all disappointed.

"Memphis is a fantastic player and that happens, we all give bad passes away. A lot of things happened from when you give the ball away to when they've scored the goal, so I don't think we can stand here and blame Memphis.

"I think there were other things which happened and why they've scored."

Jesse Lingard had given United the lead with a smart turn and finish just past the hour mark but the visitors failed to hold off the heavy Chelsea pressure in the closing stages, despite dominating parts of the game.

Van Gaal later criticised his players for failing to maintain their composure in defence, and Rooney admits that they invited too much pressure onto themselves after opening the scoring.

"The game was broken up a bit, we gave too many free-kicks away and then we couldn't get up the pitch," he said.

"But with Chelsea, at times it's difficult, because they pushed players up front and they didn't really play with any system, so it's difficult to work out how to defend against them.

"It's a disappointing result in the end. I thought it was a good performance, I thought we played some nice stuff, it feels like a defeat in the end.

"We've performed well and played some good stuff again but, overall, it's at this stage of the season that results matter and we've dropped two points."

United could have lost in the dying seconds but for a fine De Gea save to deny Costa, and Rooney has hailed the performance of the Spain goalkeeper.

"David again made some incredible saves," Rooney added.

"I've said before he's probably the best goalkeeper in the world the last few seasons and again he's made some important saves today to keep it at 1-0, but unfortunately the goal at the end has got them a draw."
