correct me if i am wrong since i am not an architect so i can be wrong too but to my knowledge there are certain design principles such as rhythm, balance, emphasis, harmony,(can't remember exactly) which architects use in their designs and i don't think an ordinary guy knows about these things. therefore designing a house by oneself will going to be a complete disaster. without even a proper spacial planing and stuff how the house going to be practical. i believe it is wiser to consult a "qualified and well experienced" architect when designing a house. to get the maximum outcome from the architect the client should clearly describe his needs and what he has in mind and be flexible at same time as some times you can't have both rawla and kada at the same time.

Those things are needed when designing a professional level work. General houses do not need these kind of specialties. Of course you can do such a in depth design with a Architect. But that is not cost effective for a general person.
General house planners know things from every field to cover general house design in order to get a approval. So there is no need for going after fancy Architects.
It is much more important to consult a Engineer rather than a Architect.
Our people in Sri Lanka are so used to Architects that they completely ignore the importance of Engineers.
