Doctors Salary depend on there grade and there designated post
Intern doctor gets only a monthly allowance - no salary - Its around 25000 as far as I can remember - no OTs nothing except this
There after if the doctor posted to a shift duty post (like in Blood banks, ICUs anesthesia) they wont get much OTs - so most of the shift duty doctors with all the allowances will be somewhere around 75000 - 80000 (Basic salary per say is 28000 to 35000)
and doctors who can do full OT duties like ward doctors will earn around 125000 per month
and even specialist consultants monthly salary is 150000 maximum (with full OT and allowances - their basic salary is somewhere around 50000 and most of the specialist do not apply for the OTs so its again around 90000)
Most of the people here are concern about doctors PP nah?
let me tell you many female doctors do not do PPs
So altogether around 50% of government doctors may be doing PPs
From the whole lot, specialists doctors category is very small... may be less than 5% of total government doctors
Normal doctor would charge a patient around 250 rupees to 300 - that's even after giving drugs as well. and many do not have very good pp except for few doctors. So most of the doctors who do PP, in average would earn, lets say they are seeing 15- 20 patients, their net income for that day is around 2500 (excluding drugs, rent bla bla bla) . Very few (about 10-15% of ordinary doctors see more than 30 patients per day
so the average doctor's monthly income "including" salary would vary between 80000 ( for non PP low OT doc) to 200000 for an average PP with full OT doc. there will be very few (around 5% ) who with very good PP will get monthly income of more than 200000 (Even that I wont think it will go beyond 350000)
For specialist doctors, only few of them have good practices. each city there will be few with untouchable popularity whom get most of the patients (about 80%).
Generally except for Colombo and major cities most specialists charge around 800 - 1000 per patient (without drugs) - they hardly see more than 10 patients per day. and they usually don't see patients in weekends as well
so their take home income might be around 300000 per month (including salary). I know there are many specialist doctors in periphery who earn very less than a ordinary junior doctor with good PP!
For specialist doctors with good PP might earn around 500000 in peripheries. But in major cities many popular doctors charge around 1000 per patient - very few charge more than 1500 per patient. Even Colombo there are many specialist with daily patient count less than 5. On the other hand famous doctors gets unthinkable amount of patients in private sector. some might see 70-80 patients per day. they might earn more than 1 mill per month. But that's a very very minority
Earnings has its own disadvantages, to earn a lot they need to sacrifice their whole life. how can they get a minimum sleep of 6 hrs after seeing 80 patients in the private sector and doing rounds in the government hospital as well. (many of these docs who are popular have become popular due to their talented works at government hospitals - that fame is the one, driving money for them. so they have to work in the government hospital as well to have their private practice running good) Specialist can get leaves, vacations but for ordinary doctor who do a PP, its difficult to get a leave, cos many people who have been ardent customers expect doc to be then and there in the pp whenever they need. or else they leave that doc and find a next good one for them who is doing the pp every day. I know non of the other professionals suffer this much to earn (only the poor laborer worker suffer more than this to earn money). most of the ordinary docs get up at 5.30-6 and go to pp at 7 am then back to hospital by 8-8.30 am . will be there till 4 pm or 2 pm then agin to the pp by 4-4.30pm and back to home by 8-8.30 pm of for the night duty if they have
So why people want to become doctors in
SL. its not the money factor...if its money factor then they would go and do a good job in marketing engineering or many other field where surely they can earn more than 200000 without sacrificing this much of low life.
In SL its the "prestige" (a culture bound thing, which is slowly degrading and is degraded by politicians and politicians henchman media personals) and "job security" (Still any doc who pass out here or who got through act 16, a livable government job is secured.)
Why people try to install SAITM like things, Cos its a "money machine" for owners. They charge 120 million (SAITM) but after initial infrastructure, course per say wont consume third of that money (Many foreign/ Russian degree holders course fee is around 6 mill compared to SAITMs 12 mill!!!
- and their facilities are well established unlike SAITM) - Did anybody think how neville buy VIPs this easily???
