select based on your application usage. If its for light work PC( letter drafting, browsing etc) no point paying for a i7 processor.

Generally Core i7 will outperform a Core i5. Having said that there are 6 core i5's as well as 10 core i7's. The number of cores makes a difference. Also as someone mentioned here, the cache size makes a difference too - i7's have a larger cache and all i7's have hyper threading.
Ultimately it depends on what you do..and the cost difference. For normal use you will not notice any difference. Choose according to your budget and your requirements.
