Why would anyone want to do that?

We did... though my wife was extremely scared as we had our children too. Many would say not to go near at least 1km near a favela.
We had a nice time and in their pubs we were all well received - probably because of our colour and because of the guy who took us there.

Skin color? They prefer darker skinned people ? Or you’re more likely to get mugged/robbed if you’re white?

The latter is true... Anyway, we were not intimidated at all and were most welcome.
We spend some time in their local pub and offered a round of drinks as well. They said no need. They do have a mafia of their own but the guy who took us said not to worry and would guarantee our safety.
