I can't emphasise this enough. Convincing these narrow minded Sri Lankans with this blunt truth is a huge challenge. So I'm staying quiet from now on without stating too much. Although I empathise with these students who write this stuff, here are some key points in this statement which I noted that MAY backfire students in a pretty bad way.
"Begging us" (no the govt never begged us to come)
"You’re simply too exhausted" (of course they are. We can’t blame them for fighting for their people)
"Part-timers " (as if it was mandatory to work 40 hrs a fortnight. The girl forgot it wasn't a rule, but an added privilege.)
"Golden eggs we ‘obediently’ lay" (what does that even mean?)
"Who have since run out of the money they brought" (talk about all weed drug club and good times that never encouraged the word ‘savings’..for some. There are still genuinely helpless ppl out there. I'm not saying no. Just wanna acknowledge that before it starts another comment war. )
"For some mysterious reason" (dude it’s the VIRUS)
"Cash cows you ‘exploit’ " (dunno how the govt will take this part)
"Eviction" (I thought they froze it. I'm not 100% sure what initiatives are put in place but just based on recent news.)
"2 weeks quarantine would disrupt my studies." (seriously? In just 2 weeks?)
"We will not forget that" (sounds a bit threatening)
It's very very condescending and sarcastic in a way, that IF in case if the govt reacts to this, it's not gonna bring sunny days to students. The BEST is to stay silent at this point. Discussing issues privately and helping each other. Anyone has all the right to disagree with me on this, but I think most of you are sensible enough to understand what I'm tryina say. These kinda public statements is the last thing we should be doing right now.
ONE person could put everyone at risk. Even potential international students. If the govt takes strict measures it's gonna haunt all of us for spreading this word. The best action we could do as a community is taking down these kinda dumb responses to a foreign govt and do the best we can do help each other get through this tough time.
