Failure of health authorities delays rapid testing for Covid-19: GMOA

In a letter to President Gotabaya Rajapaksa, the Government Medical Officers Association (GMOA) said one of the reasons for delay in rapid testing for COVID-19 in the country was the Health authorities' failure to endorse the GMOA proposal though the political authorities did.

It said though GMOA proposed both Aggressive Testing and Test, Test, Test strategies on March 13, it was not adopted until April 19.

"This 3-week delay is simply due to the failure of the health authorities to neither endorse or adapt the proposal though the President and the political authorities did accept it. Instead it was counter attacked by Prof. Indika Carunathilake, Dr. Rukshan Bellana and Dr. Sudath Samaraweera.

Now, former Minister of Health, Dr Rajiha Senarathne, in a press conference severely criticised the numbers and delay in testing comparing with other countries, while confirming the sentiments expressed by the aforementioned personalities," the GMOA said.

"We wish to forward these facts for Your Excellency's information and necessary action.

The GMOA, as a responsible professional body, is always willing to positively contribute to control the COVID 19 pandemic in the national interest," it said.

This is quite logical... the cause being lack of oxygen supply due to infected lungs.:oo:

PS: I should probably add - this is why a relatively cheap pulse oximeter could be a good indicator of the infection. This was noted by a Dr Levitan.

Dr. Richard Levitan: People were sick for days, and then they only came in with shortness of breath, like, the day they presented. ... And they would arrive with oxygen levels that basically were incredible to us. I mean, almost unimaginable how people could be awake and alert and have oxygen levels that are half normal. … Normally we are 94% to 100% on these devices, these pulse oximeters that measure how much oxygen we have in our blood. And people were showing up with oxygen levels of 50%. Now, this matches the level of oxygen that we've measured on the summit of Mt. Everest. And it's amazing to me that patients could be sick for days, getting sicker, not realizing it.

Yeah Bro... Thy've named it "COVID TOES"... but it happens not only in toes, but also fingers..
There are few hypothesis for this as they explain. U said one,
    others are

    1. general inflammation in the body.
    2. May be due to vasculitis due to virus direct action.
    3. And due to blood clots.. it may block the supply to fingers.

as usual no one has a exact answer rather than asking all to look out for these symptoms.

That's because the Chinese rapid tests were inaccurate from the beginning. They accepted it. But at that time the only available kit was that. Even currently, many claim that the accuracy is still between 30% - 50%.

There are kits that are quite accurate that are European, US or Israeli manufactured, but these are not cheap.
At the moment there are more than 250 companies trying to develop fast kits that are affordable.. An example is the Microfluidic ELISA, lab on a chip developed by a US university. These will come to the markets soon. But don;t ask me the cost, but supposedly low.;)

PCR tests could be complemented with rapid tests I think... something like drive-thru testing centers some countries have. All suspected cases could be tested by the PCR method while testing random people using rapid test kits

easy way out is, Do the rapid test, admit the positives, and do PCR in negatives...:dull:

:) Thanks... What you should do is to avoid getting it. Just like old JRJ philosophy.

At that time we all have to realize whats the difference between a virus thread and terrorism (saharan + LTTE)

We all put faith on our soldiers in crisis times. Here also they did everything from their best (even sacrificed themselves to virus) :( but you can see without clear vision on the subject lead to devastating results.

When war was there SF did the military strategies and MR and GR did the political support. Brave soldiers did the sacrifice and we won. I never argue who should take the great credit as this combination is like a chain. We can't predict the outcomes if one piece is missing.

Similarly here what i feel we are missing the subject level strategist with a vision. We have great staff to execute it.

Or the German method of pooling. The US now has the ability to test the sewers for infections. Then they know that a particular area is infected. Say in a camp or a high rise building, this makes it very easy. Just test the sewer, one PCR test, you know whether the pathogen is present. Then you go for the people in it.
