Don't be so sure about your understanding when it comes to neuroscientific research. It's a commen myth of the lay public that science has no idea about consciousness to begin with.
Consciousness, especially as a manifestation of a set emergent properties due to recursive systematic activities, is a very promising idea (actually there's a bunch of ideas that develop up from the same premise) neuroscience and AI researchers have been working on from the early 2000s. The theoretical foundation was laid by several neuroscientists, mathematicians and logicians in the early 80s. We more or less understand a how a very rudimentary model of consciousness would arise out of nothing (nothing as in there's no preliminary subjective phenomena).
