Vaccination of the Tourism Sector in Sri Lanka Against COVID-19

Inaugurated in Hambantota on the 10th of July 2021, Sri Lanka has begun the vaccination process of the Tourism Sector, focusing on the areas that attract the most tourists around the island. A total of 1000 people were inoculated with the Sinopharm vaccine; including 500 hotel staff and 150 tour guides, drivers and safari drivers.

Minister of Tourism Prasanna Ranatunge mentioned during a media briefing held at the DoubleTree by Hilton Weerawila Rajawarna Resort that Sri Lanka anticipates that the entire country will be completely COVID free by the end of 2021; so that Sri Lanka would be a safe destination for travellers. Over 500,000 people are employed in the Tourism Sector in Sri Lanka and they, in turn, have around 2 million in dependents.

Sri Lanka reopened to tourism in January 2021, through the bio-bubble plan which saw its inception in December of 2020. Since the opening, up to the 8th of July 2021, a total of 17,642 tourists have arrived in the country out of which only 188 tested positive. 138 of these tourists were treated and recovered and have successfully returned to their countries.

Sports Minister Namal Rajapakse stated that we are in the middle of the largest vaccination programme Sri Lanka has ever embarked on and declared that Sri Lanka has been the most successful country in South Asia to have controlled the spread of COVID-19.

Japan will make additional donations of the AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine to Taiwan and other Asian neighbours this week, Foreign Minister Toshimitsu Motegi said on Tuesday (Jul 13).

An additional 11 million doses donated through the COVAX sharing scheme will be sent this month to Bangladesh, Cambodia, Iran, Laos, Nepal, and Sri Lanka, as well as various Pacific Island states, he said.

Notice On the Suspension of Nawaloka hospital as theDesignated Hospital for PCR and IgM anti-body tests​

Recently, several passengers from Sri Lanka holding the negative reports of PCR and IgM anti-body tests issued by Nawaloka hospital were diagnosed as COVID-19 patients after they entered China. In order to ensure the health and safety of all passengers to China, the Chinese Embassy in Sri Lanka will suspend Nawaloka hospital as the designated hospital for PCR and IgM anti-body tests and will not accept the reports of PCR and IgM anti-body tests issued by Nawaloka hospital from July 13, 2021. The list of designated hospitals is updated as follows:
