The Abhidhamma categorizes karma by function, proving that past karma is not a rigid life sentence. Present actions can actively intercept and destroy past karma.
Janaka Kamma (Reproductive): The past action that determined your birth. (e.g., This caused you to be born poor.)
Upatthambhaka Kamma (Supportive): Past or present actions that support the reproductive karma. (e.g., If you are born poor and choose to be lazy, your present laziness supports the past karma, keeping you poor.)
Upapīḍaka Kamma (Obstructive): A new, contrary action that weakens the past karma. (e.g., You exert immense effort, educate yourself, and work ethically. This present wholesome action obstructs and weakens the karma of your poor birth.)
Upaghātaka Kamma (Destructive): A powerful present action that completely intercepts and destroys the past reproductive karma. (e.g., Your hard work and sharp intellect completely override the conditions of your birth. You become wealthy, effectively destroying the "born poor, die poor" trajectory.)
It's the state of your mind determine whether it's a kusala or akusala karma.
