Sri Lanka raises taxes on imported vehicles
Apr, 25, 2011 (LBO) - Sri Lanka has raised import duties on several categories of petrol-engined cars and three wheelers with steeper increases seen in larger hybrid vehicles, which had exceptionally low taxes earlier, officials said.


On hybrid cars with engines below 2,000 cubic centimeters total duties will go up from 38 percent close to 50 percent.

Toyota prius, seriously is the best hybrid car available below 50 lacks...

But is it really a sustainable car? Well, it does run from few petrol litres, but to be effective it requires highways, where SL doesn't have them. The southern highway only not going to make much difference.

How about their lead batteries, and other high tech stuff (hard to reuse or recycle) in the engine? They pollute the environment if discarded. Lack of knowledge about those will result in low re usability and repair-ability of cars.

A hybrid car requires more energy and materials than what an ordinary car requires to built. Hence carbon foot print and resource usage of the production process is high.
