1. تأسيس (1974)​

• Founded in 1974 in Colombo port
• Initially developed as a Sri Lankan government-linked shipyard
• Main purpose: ship repair + building for Sri Lanka

2. Japan Joint Venture Era (1993 – 2024)​

• In 1993, partnership started with
  Onomichi Dockyard Co. Ltd
• Became a joint venture:
  • Japanese company = major shareholder
  • Sri Lankan state institutions = minority stake

During this period:

• Technology + management came from Japan
• Company grew into Sri Lanka’s largest shipbuilding & repair facility

3. Financial Crisis & Exit (2022 – 2024)​

• Sri Lanka economic crisis (2022) hit the company hard
• By late 2024:
  • Japanese owners (Onomichi) decided to exit
  • Company started looking for new investor

4. Indian Takeover (2025 – 2026) ​

• In 2025,
  Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited agreed to buy stake
• By April 2026:
  • MDL officially acquired 51% controlling stake
  • Colombo Dockyard became a subsidiary of India’s MDL

• MDL is owned by Government of India (Defence Ministry)
