If anyone wants to stay up to date on fields like science, maths, engineering then better to start learning English and consume original and authentic sources rather than waiting for some Sri Lankan to do the translation. Unless you speak with a Tamil person or a foreign client, I don't see how speaking in English with another Sinhala person give any advantage. What we have in our corporate culture is totally messed up. We need a language to communicate. When you can express an idea more precisely and accurately in your mother tongue, forcing yourself to speak in English hinders that communication process. You have to narrow down the whole idea to limited vocabulary you know.

Not everyone has the same ability to learn new languages. Some people are born with it and some are not. But still they can be better at performing what they do irrespective of their ability to speak in English. An accountant, Programmer etc Filtering out these people based on their ability to speak in English and the way they impress the interviewers is totally stupid. The company just looses a valuable man power.

Sinhalese is a much more enriched language while English is just a breakdown of German. We have limited our ability to think and everything is messed up.

sinhala is a great language. But nothing much useful is written or spoken in it. Like I said in my earlier posts, things related to science, technology comes from foreign sources. What we need to keep in mind is all we have is professors singing in tv shows and talking about metaphysical concepts in news articles and nothing much related to their field of studies. The posts in this thread has moved away from from the reality... Some relate English to Imperialism. Some others count the number of letters in the alphabet in a language to say how easy it is to learn it.
Just suffice to say that there are only 12 letters in the Hawaiian language... But that doesn't make it very easy to learn Hawaiian.
There are about 1.3 Billion English speakers around the world (natively or as a second language) and in the context of a current connected world it's obvious that English as a common cross border platform of communication plays an important part.
It's your choice to use it or not.

If a student goes to a Russian university for a degree program, In the first 6 months he/she has to learn Russian language. There are no exceptions. All programs are conducted in Russian. Their new findings and scientific research articles are all written and published in Russian language. If international community wants to use them have to translate it back to English. I think same goes with china and japan.

But our universities expect things do be done in English language. All journals are published in English language. But see our university rankings non of them are in top 1000. Our emphasize on doing research and publishing articles is quite limited. Could English be the course that most of the students just wanted to get their degree or masters and quickly move on to a job?

I don't know whether I sound clear to you. But I see a gap.

Our every day tom, dick and harry speak better English than Japanese, Chinese and even some European Scholars. But are we in a better economic position than them?

Do you think Japanese engineers working in companies like toyota, yamaha, honda can speak english?
Can Russian scientists speak English? Even the one who came up with the vaccine? I don't think so.
Japan is the country that is pioneer in medical equipment. Do you think the research and development people working on those field can speak English?

We are just slave to western imperialism. Our fluency in English does not give us any special advantage. Economically or otherwise.
