1.Isolated from the world by the then super power, immediately after their independance in 1796. Basically USA started from scratch.
2.Yellow Fever: From the late 1700s to early 1800s, yellow fever was a recurring problem, especially in port cities. A major epidemic in Philadelphia in 1793, then the U.S. capital, killed 5,000 people and forced 17,000 to flee the city, disrupting government and commerce.
