These breakers (MCB) are not in place to protect people. It only protects an electrical circuit from over-current, and they do operate as designed.

Remember in the olden days we had a fuse (mostly ceramic with a fusible piece of wire inside it). If there's excessive current in the circuit then this fuse wire rapidly heats and melts, protecting the circuit. So you have to manually replace the wire inside.

MCBs improve on this functionality as they are usually not destroyed during over-current so are reusable. You simply turn it back on.

It is very important to note that MCBs do not protect humans against electrical shock caused by 'earth leakage'. This service is provided by ELCB, RCDs and RCBOs.

ELCB (Earth Leakage Circuit Breakers) provide safety. These devices have a long history and there were two types. The voltage operated and current operated.

The voltage operated ones monitored the voltage on the Earth wire and if it exceeds 50 V, it breaks the circuit.
These devices are no longer used because it had deficiencies and got replaced with the current operated ones.

In the current operated ones, both the supply and the return passes through a sensing coil and any imbalance would trip the circuit.
To prevent confusion the IEC renamed these devices as RCD, RCCB (Residual Current Devices or circuit breakers). They came in different sensitivities, usually around 30mA but there are 6 mA High sensitivity models too.

RCBO stands for Residual Current Circuit Breaker with Overload Protection. This device offers protection against overloads, short circuits and earth leakage currents. It also monitors the current flow through the line, and the return flow in the neutral line. Thus, RCBO can be considered a combination of MCB and RCCB (Residual Current Circuit Breaker) to protect against all types of electrical dangers.
Note that a RCD alone in itself does not provide overload protection.

  • The path of electric shock earthed also matters; if one hand touches the live wire while the other touches the earth, there is a high risk of death. Even if you wear protective shoes, this can happen. That's why, when testing an electric circuit, always keep one hand back.
