His Excellency Gotabhaya Rajapaksa President of the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka Presidential Secretariat Colombo 1 Sri Lanka
Your Excellency,
I hope this letter finds you in good health and high spirits. I am writing to you as a concerned global citizen who values the principles of democracy, human rights, and press freedom. While acknowledging the complexities and challenges that come with governing a nation, I feel compelled to address certain concerns that have come to my attention regarding the treatment of journalists in Sri Lanka.
It has come to my knowledge that journalists, including Ms. Frederica Jansz, have faced verbal attacks and derogatory language from various sources. I understand that criticism and differing opinions are inherent in a democratic society; however, it is crucial to emphasize the importance of maintaining a respectful and constructive dialogue, especially when addressing individuals who exercise their right to freedom of speech and expression.
Press freedom is a cornerstone of any democratic society, serving as a vital mechanism for accountability, transparency, and the protection of human rights. As such, I urge Your Excellency to consider the following points:
- Respect for Journalists: Journalists play a crucial role in informing the public and contributing to a healthy democracy. It is essential to recognize and respect their right to carry out their duties without fear of intimidation, harassment, or violence.
- Promotion of Ethical Conduct: As a leader, promoting ethical conduct and fostering an environment of tolerance and open dialogue is essential. Derogatory language and personal attacks do not contribute to constructive discourse and can erode public trust in the democratic process.
- Unity over Division: It is my hope that political discourse in Sri Lanka remains inclusive and promotes unity rather than division. Employing tactics that exacerbate racial or ethnic tensions can have long-lasting consequences and hinder the development of a harmonious society.
I believe that by championing these values, Sri Lanka can strengthen its democratic institutions, foster a vibrant media landscape, and contribute to the well-being of its citizens.
I appreciate your time and consideration of these concerns, and I trust that you will continue to lead with a commitment to democracy, human rights, and the well-being of all Sri Lankan citizens.
Sincerely,
Sanzilla Jackcat,
