    Installing Windows 7

first you have to make the boot device priority settings,

usually you can do this by restarting the computer and pressing DEL or F2 at the beginning, now you get the blue screen with some stuff, go to boot , i cant tell you the correct path, because it varies, then make the first boot device as your DVD Rom, then press F10 and exit,

place the DVD and wait , it will tell you to press any key to boot from CD, then press any key,

here after the process is simple and you can manage it,

chose custom when you get the installation type dialog box

when you get the installation path selection , select the drive you want to install it,
this is where you should be very careful, most probably your vista might be installed on C: drive, so try to chose another partition
    .

you can even partition a disk at this place, you can manage partitions by pressing advanced option at the right bottom,

, this is where you have to choose custom, if you press the upgrade button it will upgrade your xp , there after you won't be able to use vista, so be careful, press the custom button

That's all you can relax now,

( in the pictures there is only 1 partition, but there will be two or more in your hard drive, )

i think this will help you,
