can i Suggest a different route if you are going to take the train..
how about catching the earliest train you can from
Kandy - Colombo fort - Hikkaduwa. The entire journey would take about 8- to 9 hours.
So assuming you left around 5.30 or 6.00 (check train times) ... you can have lunch on the train (bring packed or buy from Kandy) .. thats a cool and a nice experience ..
You would get to Hikkaduwa by around 3 pm to 4 pm ... EXCELLENT time....
All hotels are excellent... pre-book a sea facing room (2 floor or above) with a balcony in the main Hikka city (dont book from narigama or anywhere.. just the city) it would cost you around 5k - 6k ....take a shower ..relax, chill then get out to the beach by 6pm which is the best time to catch the sun set.. walk on the beach etc..
then get to the road... and theres' enough of brilliant street restaurants with live music and great food.. just WALK-IN .. dont go anywhere Threewheel drivers suggest.
Have dinner.. get back to the room by 8 .. and drag the mattress of the bed to the outdoor balcony.. the sheets and the pillows...

Galle ...get into the intercity highway bus... you will be in Kadawatha within Hours ! ... if you are hungry.. find a shop in Kadawatha for lunch (there are good once) .. then take another bus from there to Kandy !
