ඉහත ප්‍රචාරක රැලි සියල්ල එක්‌සත් ජාතික පක්‍ෂය සහ ජනතා විමුක්‌ති පෙරමුqණ ඒකාබද්ධව පවත්වන අතර එම පක්‍ෂ දෙකේ නායකයන් මෙන්ම ජෙනරාල් සරත් ෆොන්සේකා මහතාට සහාය දක්‌වන සෙසු දේශපාලන පක්‍ෂ නායකයන්ද සහභාගි වේ.

Pressure from Basil compels Sunday Lankadeepa editor to publish lies

Opposition Leader Ranil Wickremesinghe has requested the owner of the Lankadeepa newspaper, Ranjith Wijewardena to carry a correction on a story carried on the front page of the Sunday Lankadeepa newspaper where it quotes TNA Leader R. Sampanthan as saying that the party decided to support General Sarath Fonseka following his agreement to abide by conditions forwarded by the TNA. Wickremesinghe had informed Wijewardena that the story had created a wrong impression that the General had agreed to merge the North and East.

Wickremesinghe had said there was no agreement on merging the North and the East at the discussions between the General and the TNA and that the newspaper had carried the story without speaking to Sampanthan. He had also said legal action would be instituted against the newspaper if a correction on the story was not carried.

The story published in the Sunday Lankadeepa newspaper had been written by Dayaseeli Liyanage. The story quoting Sampanthan states that the NA decided to support General Sarath Fonseka following the favorable response given by him to the merger of the North and East, finding a permanent solution to the ethnic issue and the dismantling of high security zones.

Another story in the same newspaper quoting JVP General Secretary Tilvin Silva states that the TNA has decided to support General Fonseka without any conditions.

The two stories in the newspaper indicate conflicting stances of parties backing the common candidate. An investigation in to the stories had reveled that Sunday Lankadeepa Editor Ariyananda Dombagahawatte had assigned the two stories following a request made by the Head of the President’s campaign coordinating center, Basil Rajapaksa.

A senior media person, Ariyananda Dombagahawatte is a member of the President’s media and propaganda committee and also participates in the media coordinating meeting held every morning under the patronage of Defence Secretary Gotabhaya Rajapaksa.

Wickremesinghe has said the Sunday Lankadeepa Editor functioned in a very biased manner at the event held to mark the first death anniversary of The Sunday Leader Editor, Lasantha Wickrematunge.

It is also learnt that the Opposition Leader has decided not to grant any interviews to the Sunday Lankadeepa newspaper during the election period.
