Dengue has four Serotypes. These are closely related and are named DENV-1, -2, -3, and -4. Infection with one serotype of DENV
provides immunity to that serotype for life, but provides
no long-term immunity to other serotypes. Thus, a person can be
infected as many as four times, once with each serotype.
However, there can be exceptions to this rule. Some studies spanning over 20 years in the tropics have shown that and life-long serotype-specific immunity following dengue virus infection may not always occur.
When someone has a second DENV infection with a new DENV type, the immune system makes heterotypic antibodies against cross-reactive antigens to the first DENV type. This process is called ‘O
riginal Antigenic Sin’. Memory B cells are responsible for the production of these heterotypic antibodies. Virgin B cells will also produce homotypic antibodies against the infecting DENV type during this second exposure.
(I have written about the Original Antigenic Sin on previous Covid related threads. Pls search if you like to read)
Note that the Classic dengue fever (aka Break bone Fever) is easily managed. But some patients with dengue fever go on to develop Dengue Haemorrhagic Fever (DHF), a severe and sometimes fatal form of the disease. Also some can rapidly progress into DSS (Dengue Shock Syndrome), which, if not treated correctly, can lead to severe complications and death.
Currently there's no approved specific anti-viral. But the Indians use Ivermectin and some others too. I have no idea whether these help.
