We do need to go to the IMF before April ends and people will be very very very angry. This is why I was worried about the most ubiquitous protest slogan (#GoHomeGota) as opposed to something like #EndWelfareEconomy or #EnactEconReforms. The benefit of the latter being that it normalizes and introduce harsh economic measures to the public. Obviously, the road to such measures lies via getting rid of Rajapaksas because you cannot do anything with that lot on power. So, ousting Gota is imperative.

By the way, you do not have to enact severe government sector downsizing at the outset. Salary cuts and no more government appointments would be a start and actual laying off can be be implemented methodically. What Ranil suggests is to cut down on non-revenue generating expenses and allocate that to provide concession to people who get laid off. Hence, the first 2 years would be a government that goes tentatively on the expense cycle, economy will neither boom nor contract, very much a low energy state, and once the lay-offs stabilize it's business as usual.
